1998 Dodge Dodge truck problems
The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 1998 Dodge Dodge truck problems
The 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 is a popular pickup truck, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the fuel system. Owners have reported that their trucks will not start unless they use starter fluid or manually add gas to the carburetor. This issue could be due to a faulty fuel pump or regulator, which controls the amount of gas the injectors receive. If the regulator is not functioning correctly, it may send too much or too little fuel to the injectors, making it difficult to start the truck.
Another common problem with the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 is related to the engine's intake plenum gasket, which tends to go bad frequently and cause coolant leaks
. These leaks can lead to misfires or overheating, and can be caused by a faulty water pump, which also tends to fail every couple of years. The HVAC system can also cause issues, with check valves that keep going bad and shutting the door that controls the air, causing a lack of airflow when driving at high speeds.
The transmission is another area where the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 can have problems
. The gearing ratios are not optimal, and the torque converters are known to be crappy, especially in 4x4 models. The reverse and overdrive assembly tends to go bad first, leading to governors, solenoids, and speed sensor issues, as well as clogged coolers. These issues can cause serious problems at low mileage if not serviced carefully.
The rear ends of the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 are generally good, but they require regular fluid changes to prevent worn-out bearings or seals. The truck's ball joints are another area where problems can occur, with the ball joints tending to go bad and causing the truck to dart or roll in a particular direction, which can be dangerous at high speeds.
Other common issues with the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 include motor sludge, which can lead to engine failure, especially in the 2002 model year. Manifold gasket leaks can also cause excessive oil consumption, and catalytic converter failure can lead to power loss, rattling, and a check engine light. Lighting issues are also common, with headlights, taillights, or turn signals suddenly stopping working, causing safety hazards.
In summary, the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 has several common problems, including fuel system issues, engine and transmission problems, and issues with the HVAC system, ball joints, and lighting. While some of these issues can be fixed with simple repairs, others may require more extensive work or even engine replacement. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent some of these issues, but owners of this truck should be aware of these common problems and be prepared to address them as needed.

- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES I HAD TO HAVE THE BALL JOINTS REPLACED ON MY 1998 DODGE DAKOTA. MY MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT BEFORE CHANGE THE BALL JOINTS THAT I SHOULD TAKE MY VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP AND SEE IF THEY WOULD COVER THE COST. THEY RESPONDED BY TELLING ME THAT MY BALL JOINTS WERE FINE. THE REASON I WENT TO MY MECHANIC WAS BECAUSE I HAD HAD MY VEHICLE ALIGNED FOUR TIMES IN THE FIRST 30,000 MILE AND MY TRUCK STILL PULLED TO ONE SIDE. THAT WAS WHEN I WENT TO AN UNBIASED PARTY TO TELL WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I HAD THIS REPAIR WORK DONE IN LATE 2002 OR EARLY 2003. *AK
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-07-15
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I HAVE A '98 DODGE DAKOTA PICKUP TRUCK WITH APPROXIMATELY 58,000 MILES ON IT. THIS PAST JUNE I HAD TO REPLACE A FRONT END BALL JOINT ON THIS VEHICLE. AT THAT TIME THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000 MILES ON THE TRUCK. THE SAME SYMPTOMS ARE STARTING TO OCCUR AGAIN THAT ACCOMPANIED THE LAST BALL JOINT PROBLEM. SO IT'S LIKELY I WILL HAVE TO REPLACE ANOTHER ONE OF THE JOINTS ON THE SUSPENSION OF THIS TRUCK IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT CONSIDERING THERE COULD BE DIRE CONSEQUENCES WITH BALL JOINT FAILURE (THE SUSPENSION COLLAPSING AT HIGH SPEED) THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD REQUIRE DODGE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM BY IMPROVING THE DESIGN OF THESE JOINTS AND ISSUE A RECALL. I URGE THE NTSB, NTSA, OR WHOEVER TO INVESTIGATE THESE PROBLEMS BEFORE ANYONE ELSE GETS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. IF YOU RESEARCH THE WEB, YOU WILL FIND THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES. *LA
