2020 Kia Niro problems

kia logo

The Kia Niro (Korean: 기아 니로) is a compact crossover SUV (C-segment) manufactured by Kia since 2016. It is an electrification-focused vehicle, offering three versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric variants.

First generation (DE; 2016)

The first-generation Niro was introduced in 2016. Based on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq, Kia opted to use dual-clutch transmission instead of the more traditional continuously variable transmission found in most other hybrids to offer a more engaging driving experience.

The size is between the Stonic and Sportage, and very close to the XCeed. In Europe, the Niro was launched in a choice of seven colours and either 16- or 18-inch wheels. It was the first Kia model to feature Android Auto, available from its launch, while Apple CarPlay was made available towards the end of 2016. Seven airbags were included as standard, along with other safety features including autonomous braking, smart cruise control and lane departure warning to name a few. Noise reduction was a key development focus, with Kia achieving a quieter cabin by use of increased front structure insulation and the use of acoustic windshield glass.

Full production started in May 2016 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, South Korea, with European sales from the third quarter of 2016.

A plug-in version was launched in the United Kingdom in the end of 2017, and in the United States in the beginning of 2018, with an electric version launched in 2018. Towards the end of 2018 and start of 2019, sales of the Niro PHEV ranked highly in Denmark and Sweden in a list of top plug-in car sales.

The Niro received a facelift in 2019 which included changes to the front and rear bumpers, as well as new headlights and color choices. Unlike the prototypes, no production version was ever offered with four wheel drive.

Are there any problems with Kia Niro?

Earlier this year, Kia issued a recall for Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid (Kia Niro PHEV) models due to a potential short circuit that could result in engine fires, as announced by the NHTSA on Monday.

What are the disadvantages of the Kia Niro?

While the Niro's electric efficiency and stylish design are definite advantages, there are also some drawbacks to consider, such as slow charging speed, limited cargo space, and a less powerful engine than some of its competitors.

Is Kia Niro good choice?

Road manners are agreeable—if somewhat forgettable—but the Niro feels right at home in urban environments, nailing its mission and earning itself a 2024 Editors' Choice award. If you're looking to go all-electric, Kia also sells a Niro EV; we review that model separately.

Which Kia Niro model is best?

The Kia Niro hybrid (or the pure-electric Kia Niro EV) will be a better option for most private buyers. In terms of trim level, the mid-level Kia Niro 3 strikes us as the sweet spot in the range. The top-spec Kia Niro 4 has some very desirable kit but it's also a lot of money...

I'm so glad to hear that you own a 2020 Soul EX and love it! When looking for a small SUV, it's great that your Kia dealer was your first stop. It's amazing to think that the same manufacturer makes both vehicles. The Soul EX has so many great features, including ventilated seats, tons of safety features, a stylish interior, and solid all-around performance. While it's unfortunate that you've experienced some sluggishness with the dual clutch, I'm confident that Kia can do better. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This car has a known issue where it does not start in temperatures below 10 degrees, and unfortunately, Kia has not yet provided a solution. Despite this issue, Kia has not offered a refund or replacement for the vehicle. Additionally, I have experienced difficulties communicating with Kia consumer affairs, which has been frustrating. I have had to pay out of pocket for rental and cab expenses to get to work, which should have been reimbursed according to the contract. Overall, I believe Kia needs to take responsibility for this issue and provide better customer service. Thank you for considering my experience.

I purchased the NIRO in 2019 and have been thoroughly enjoying it. However, I have recently experienced some issues with the android auto cutting out and the USB port sounding warped when using the flash drive. It is important that these issues are addressed promptly and effectively to avoid any potential damage to the dashboard. I would appreciate a timely resolution to this matter. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

I recently reviewed the LX with standard package. While the car is great for city driving, the cargo space is quite small. I was only able to fit 2-24 pack bottled water and 2-24 pack Pepsi, and the rest of my groceries struggled to fit. It may not be the best option for a big grocery run for a family of 5, as even my compact Hyundai Accent has twice the trunk space of the Kia Niro. Additionally, it may not be the best option for Ikea trips, as a compact car would be able to carry much more. The acceleration is also poor in comparison to other SUVs of the same size, and you will have to really step on it to reach the normal tollway speed of 70-75 mph here in North Texas. Furthermore, there is no extra charger/usb port for back seat passengers, unlike other new vehicles. The entertainment options are also limited, with only a Sirius package that's free for 3 months, and no remote start option on Evo. The 3 seats in the back are quite small, and it may be a tight fit for 3 normal weight teenagers. While this may not be the best option for a road trip or a family of 5, it is still a great car for city driving. It is important to note that the depreciation is quite high, with 2018 models already at 33%-43% depreciation (check kbb). I would recommend doing research before making a purchase, and shopping around to find the best option for your needs. However, the warranty is good, as Hyundai/Kia offer great warranties. Best of luck!

Last Thursday, while driving home from work, my 2017 Kia Niro instructed me to immediately pull over and call Kia's roadside assistance. Unfortunately, this has happened at least three times in as many years, forcing me to pull over and get my car towed to my local Kia dealer. However, I am grateful that each time, the repairs have been covered under warranty. Despite this, I have been left stranded on the side of a hazardous and busy freeway during warm weather. As the original owner of my Niro, driving less than 10,000 miles each year, I am disappointed that this has happened repeatedly. I hope that Kia can understand my frustration and work with me to find a solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Positive 2020 Kia Niro car reviews

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience with the Niro EX lease! It's always a good idea to try out a hybrid car before committing to buying one. I'm happy to hear that the Niro has all the options you were looking for in the EX model, and that you love the blind spot feature and how easy it is to drive. It sounds like you're really enjoying the peppy drive and impressive fuel efficiency, getting about 60 mpg on the first tank that covered 612 miles. Thanks for sharing your experience and giving the Kia Niro 4 stars! Best regards from San Antonio, TX.

  2. Raul Huel 2025-10-17

Hi there! We received our Kia Niro on December 29th, 2018 and after looking at some other hybrids, we found that the Kia Niro was the best fit for us. We've only driven about 200 miles so far, so this is just a review on how we're getting used to it. Back in 2012, we leased a Kia Soul and since we're in our late 60s, leasing works for us since we don't drive too much. However, we understand that leasing only works for some people. As for the Niro, we love the laid-back driving experience. We're not in a rush to get anywhere, so if you're looking for a sports car, this might not be the one for you. It's a great hybrid car with plenty of room in the back. We think it handles very well and it's a nice city car. We're planning on taking some short trips soon, but so far, it fits our needs perfectly. We give it 4 and a half stars! ☆☆☆☆½

Just bought our second Kia Niro. We got one 11 months ago and we absolutely love it so much that my husband and I argued about whose turn it was to take it. So I went out and bought my own. The gas savings are fabulous and it's very roomy and comfortable. I also love the price!

  4. Elwyn Windler 2025-07-24

I've only had the car for a few weeks, but I'm really enjoying it. My hour-long commute, mostly in traffic, has been transformed by this hybrid. I now see the time in stop-and-go traffic as an opportunity to save on gas, and I'm actually doing better than the quoted 55.1 mpg. I've only had to fill up once in two weeks! Apart from the fuel economy, I really appreciate the technology it comes with. I can listen to podcasts, Amazon music, and enjoy some of my Sirius XM trial as well. It's spacious enough for my needs, and although it looks bigger than it actually is, it's a nice size overall. I previously had a MINI Clubman, so that could be why it seems so big. It's worth noting that it's a hybrid, so there's not a ton of kick, and at times it does feel a bit sluggish. However, with my commute, I'm rarely going that fast. Within the city, it's great. If you're looking for turbo speed, this isn't the car for you, but if you want to save money on your commute and enjoy the ride, definitely check it out!

  5. Benedict Koss 2025-07-13

I drive an S-Touring which gets an impressive 51+MPG even in the heavy traffic of DC. The entertainment system is a must-have for me, and the comfortable seats and overall quality of the interior design make for a pleasant driving experience. I traded in my RX350 and am now saving $1300 a year on gas, while still having all the capacity I need with a roof-box and hitch cargo carrier. The car has been incredibly reliable, with the same tires and brakes after 40k on the odometer. The DTC is a real gem, and the suspension with 18-inch wheels makes driving on curvy roads a lot of fun. Overall, the Niro has made me a better driver behind the wheel.
