1994 Isuzu Amigo problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu MU is a mid-size SUV which was produced by Japan-based manufacturer Isuzu from 1989 to 2004.

The three-door MU was introduced in 1989, followed in 1990 by the five-door version called Isuzu MU Wizard. Production of these first generation models ceased in 1998 to be replaced by a second generation. This time, the five-door version dropped the "MU" prefix, to become the Isuzu Wizard. The acronym "MU" is short for "Mysterious Utility". Isuzu manufactured several variations to the MU and its derivates for sale in other countries.

The short-wheelbase (three-door) version was sold as the Isuzu MU and Honda Jazz in Japan, with the names Isuzu Amigo and later Isuzu Rodeo Sport used in the United States. Throughout continental Europe, the three-door was called Opel Frontera Sport, with the Vauxhall Frontera Sport title used in the United Kingdom, and Holden Frontera Sport in Australia.

The long-wheelbase (five-door) version was available as the Isuzu Wizard in Japan, and in North America as Isuzu Rodeo and the Honda Passport. Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden each also sold rebadged versions of the five-door as the Opel Frontera, Vauxhall Frontera, and Holden Frontera. It was also sold as the Chevrolet Frontera in Egypt, the Isuzu Cameo and Isuzu Vega in Thailand, the Isuzu Frontier in South Africa, and as the Chevrolet Rodeo in Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia.

Common 1994 Isuzu Amigo problems

The Isuzu Amigo, a compact SUV built in Japan, is known for its sporty design and versatility. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of problems. Here are some common issues with the 1994 Isuzu Amigo, based on complaints from owners:

  • Leaking Oil: The 1994 Isuzu Amigo is known to leak oil, which can be a significant problem if not addressed promptly. Oil leaks can lead to reduced engine performance, increased engine wear, and even engine failure. It's essential to identify the source of the leak and repair it as soon as possible.
  • Rust: Rust is a common issue with the 1994 Isuzu Amigo, particularly if the vehicle was originally from a region with harsh winter conditions. Rust can affect the vehicle's structural integrity and lead to more severe problems if not addressed. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent rust from becoming a significant issue.
  • Check Engine Light and Erratic Fuel Gauge Operation: Some owners of the 1994 Isuzu Amigo have reported issues with the check engine light and erratic fuel gauge operation. These problems can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors or wiring issues. It's essential to diagnose and repair these problems as soon as possible to avoid more severe issues.
  • Engine Failure: Engine failure is a common problem with the Isuzu Rodeo, which shares many components with the Amigo. The engine can consume large amounts of motor oil, leading to permanent engine damage if not addressed. It's essential to monitor the engine's oil level regularly and address any issues promptly.
  • Air Bag Problems: The Japanese automaker has issued a recall for certain 2000 Isuzu Rodeo models due to faulty air bag modules. While the 1994 Amigo is not affected by this recall, it's still essential to ensure that the vehicle's air bags are functioning correctly.

In summary, the 1994 Isuzu Amigo has several common problems, including leaking oil, rust, check engine light and erratic fuel gauge operation, engine failure, and air bag problems. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from becoming more severe. If you're considering purchasing a 1994 Isuzu Amigo, it's essential to research the vehicle's history and ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.

Negative 1994 Isuzu Amigo car reviews

  1. Winston Cruickshank 2024-11-24

I've had this car for about a year and a half. It's been very reliable, but it's a bit slow with only 96 hp. The dash is also quite simple, without an rpm meter or drink holders, etc.

  2. Jedediah Schaefer 2024-10-12

I had an Amigo for about two years and unfortunately, I should have done a buyers check before I bought it. I experienced a flywheel/starter problem that made me have to pop the clutch many times in order for it to start. It rode rough and got average gas mileage for an SUV. I missed my old car! The oil pressure dropped to the point that the oil light would come on every once in a while because, as I found out when I sold it, one of the cylinders had water in it. This is definitely not good news! The soft top is tough to get on and off, so I would recommend trying it before you buy it. Unfortunately, this was probably my last SUV.

  1. Hermann Spinka 2024-10-04

I bought my Amigo brand new and have only had to replace the tires and clutch once in the last 10 years. I am so grateful that I have never had any major problems with it! My Amigo has been a reliable and trustworthy companion that I have never regretted owning!

  2. Miguel Rempel 2024-09-01

You've driven 125,000 miles and never had a problem. Even after a 22-inch snowfall, you had no issues driving in town. You can even carry two bikes and a kayak on the roof rack with ease. You've hauled items that people with bigger SUVs couldn't because of the open roof. I wanted to let you know that I've replaced my top twice in 12 years by ordering online, and both replacements were better than the original design.

  3. Rickey Skiles 2024-07-28

I bought my Isuzu in 1999 and have been driving it every day since. It has been a reliable vehicle and I have only needed to perform standard upkeep. With only 93000 miles on the vehicle to date, I expect to have many more good years with it. If you find one in good condition, I highly recommend purchasing this vehicle.

  4. Winston Cole 2024-05-17

I bought mine used years ago and recently gave it a makeover. The only thing I wish it had was 4WD. It's good on gas and dependable, and I've taken it to places where some people wouldn't dare to go. I'm from N.C. and I would drive it across the country without a second thought. I wish Isuzu would bring back the first generation. Oh, and mine has 230,000 miles on it. It can even run 71mph in a quarter of a mile!

  5. Reed Dietrich 2024-05-10

I've been driving this car since 2008, back when I was in high school, and it just keeps on running. Despite all the rough treatment it's received, from off-roading to long road trips, it has never let me down. Even when I leave it sitting in a barn during harsh winters, it always starts right up at the first sign of spring. In the six years that I've owned it, I've only needed to invest in oil changes and a new battery. Although I'm always on the lookout for a new car, I just can't seem to let go of my trusty Amigo. If you ever come across one, I highly recommend getting it - it's definitely worth it!
