1998 Isuzu Amigo problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu MU is a mid-size SUV which was produced by Japan-based manufacturer Isuzu from 1989 to 2004.

The three-door MU was introduced in 1989, followed in 1990 by the five-door version called Isuzu MU Wizard. Production of these first generation models ceased in 1998 to be replaced by a second generation. This time, the five-door version dropped the "MU" prefix, to become the Isuzu Wizard. The acronym "MU" is short for "Mysterious Utility". Isuzu manufactured several variations to the MU and its derivates for sale in other countries.

The short-wheelbase (three-door) version was sold as the Isuzu MU and Honda Jazz in Japan, with the names Isuzu Amigo and later Isuzu Rodeo Sport used in the United States. Throughout continental Europe, the three-door was called Opel Frontera Sport, with the Vauxhall Frontera Sport title used in the United Kingdom, and Holden Frontera Sport in Australia.

The long-wheelbase (five-door) version was available as the Isuzu Wizard in Japan, and in North America as Isuzu Rodeo and the Honda Passport. Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden each also sold rebadged versions of the five-door as the Opel Frontera, Vauxhall Frontera, and Holden Frontera. It was also sold as the Chevrolet Frontera in Egypt, the Isuzu Cameo and Isuzu Vega in Thailand, the Isuzu Frontier in South Africa, and as the Chevrolet Rodeo in Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia.

Common 1998 Isuzu Amigo problems

The Isuzu Amigo, a compact sport utility vehicle produced from 1988 to 2004, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of the 1998 model. These issues include engine failure, air bag problems, and rust in the rear suspension.

Engine failure is a significant issue for the Isuzu Amigo, as it is the most commonly reported problem on CarComplaints, affecting nearly every model year.

Air bag problems are another concern for the Isuzu Amigo, with the Japanese automaker issuing a recall for certain 2000 models due to faulty air bag modules.

Rust in the rear suspension is also a concern for the Isuzu Amigo, with Isuzu announcing a recall of about 11,000 Amigo and Rodeo Sport trucks from the 1998-2000 model years due to a corrosion problem with the rear suspension.

In summary, the Isuzu Amigo has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including engine failure, air bag problems, and rust in the rear suspension. While Isuzu has not issued any recalls for engine failure in the Amigo, it is essential to ask your seller about the vehicle's engine history to avoid costly repairs down the line. If you suspect problems with your Amigo's air bag module or rear suspension, it is crucial to bring it to an authorized dealer for an inspection to ensure your safety on the road.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-04-03
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I WAS TRAVELING S/B FRY 99 AT KIMBERLINA RD, JUST NORTH OF BAKERSFLELD CALIF. I WAS IN THE CENTER LANE TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF APPROX 70 TO 75 MPH. AT THIS TIME I HEARD A LOUD "THUD" AGAINST THE LEFT DOOR OF MY 1998 ISUZU AMIGO, THE TREAD ON THE LEFT FRONT TIRE HAD SEPARATED AND HAD STRUCK THE SIDE OF MY VEHICLE. THE TYPE OF TIRE ON MY VEHICLE IS A BRIGESTONE DUELER. THE TREAD SEPARATION CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE. THE ESTIMATES ARE BETWEEN $1700 TO $2100 DOLLARS. THE TREAD PUT THREE DENTS ON THE DRIVERS DOOR, BROKE OF THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR, BROKE THE BUMPER, KNOCKED THE LEFT FRONT FENDER OUT OF LINE, DAMAGED THE MUG GUARDS AND OTHER PROTECTIVE SHIELD UNDER THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WELL. THE TIRE DID NOT DEFLATE,& I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A SLOW STOP ON A VERY ACTIVE FAST ROADWAY. I CONTACTED FIRESTONE/BRIDGESTONE AND FILED A CONSUMER COMPLAINT I COMPLETED THE REQUIRED PAPERWORK AND SENT THEM PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE. I ALSO ACQUIRED THE ESTIMATES AND SENT THEM MY TIRE AT MY OWN EXPENSE. THEY HAVE SINCE REJECTED MY COMPLAINT STATING THE SEPARATION WAS MY FAULT CAUSED MY LOW TIRE PRESSURE. I DISAGREE. THIS TIRE WAS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT PURCHASED WITH THE VEHICLE. THIS TIRE WAS THE SPARE AND HAD ONLY APPROX 5 TO 7000 MILES ON THE TIRE. MY VEHICLE RECEIVES REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND THE TIRES WERE RECENTLY ROTATED. THE TIRE PRESSURE IS CHECKED / BALANCED AND THE PRESSURE CHECKED. I PERSONALLY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO TAKING THIS TRIP. ALL I ASK IS THAT I AM REIMBURSED FOR THE DAMAGE SUSTAINED TO MY VEHICLE AND MY TIRES BE REPLACED WITH A MAKE/BRAND OF MY OWN CHOOSING. I HAVE EFFECTED SOME OF THE REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE INCLUDE THE TIRE, AND MIRROR THESE ARE NECESSARY TO KEEP THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. I WAS FORCED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER BRIDGESTONE TIRE IN ORDER STAY CONSISTENT WITH THE OTHER TIRES ON THE VEHICLE. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE WITH THE BRIDGESTONE PRODUCTS I WOULD LIKE TO REPLACE ALL FIVE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE. TO INCLUDE THE SPARE.

  • Summary: TO START OFF I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED REGARDING THE RECALL FOR THE TIMING BELT. I JUST HAPPEN TO FIND IT MYSELF ON THE INTERNET DOING A SEARCH FOR RECALLS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ISUZU AND HAD 2 OF THE RECALLS FIXED. (TIMING BET "BELT KIT" AND REAR AXLE "BOLT KIT") THIS WAS ON FEB, 5 2003 AT 88803 MILES. ON APRIL, 30 2004 AT 101660 MILES I WAS DRIVING MY HUSBAND TO THE AIRPORT AND THE CAR DIED AT A TURN. "IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD" NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE CAR FAILED AND IT WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. I WAS THOUGHT IT MAY HAVE BEEN BAD GAS "WATER IN THE GAS" DUE TO THE FACT I HAD JUST FILLED UP 15 MILES PRIOR. TO SUM IT ALL UP THE MECHANIC HAD TO REPLACE THE TIMING BELT AS IT WAS IN SHREDS. (PART IS STILL AVAILABLE IF NEEDED) NOW $226.00 + RENTAL CAR OUT OF MY POCKET TO FIX SOMETHING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ALREADY FIXED? I ONLY DROVE 12,857 BEFORE IT GAVE OUT AND WAS TOLD YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO REPLACE A TIMING BELT BUT EVERY 60,000 MILES. . THIS SEEMS TO A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE 98 AMIGOS AND SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT IT! PS. Negative 1998 Isuzu Amigo car reviews

  1. Kevon Prohaska 2024-10-23

I really want to like this vehicle, but unfortunately, my dealer has not been able to resolve some nagging warranty issues that have been plaguing my Isuzu since we took delivery of it in 2002. Specifically, the transfer case won't stay in 4wd, and I have had trouble keeping a set of front tires on it. Additionally, some of the plastic interior parts have fallen off, and the water pump and timing belt tensioner needed to be replaced around the same time. On top of all that, Isuzu changed the name to Rodeo Sport, which significantly decreased its trade-in value. Despite all these issues, I do appreciate the body style, and I am planning to upgrade it with a vortec 350/auto trans this winter.

  2. Riley Jacobi 2024-10-11

The Amigo is a really enjoyable car to drive, despite its simplicity and tightness. Although the 4 cylinder lacks some power, it can still take off when necessary. I have the most basic model, but I appreciate how it's readily made for the V6 and 4WD. However, the hard suspension designed for this type of car is a little too hard for a smooth ride. I don't like how the engine taps loudly when it's cold, but it sounds fine after heating up. Unfortunately, the soft top hardens due to typical New England weathering, making it very difficult to use. The 2WD model is not ideal for snowy conditions and slides very easily (although I must admit, it can be fun to slide around). Overall, it's a fun car to start with, but it may not be the best choice for school.

  3. Hector Greenholt 2024-08-28

I purchased my Amigo back in '98 and was very happy with the price and the dealership. At first, I absolutely loved my vehicle, but unfortunately, I started experiencing problems about 6 weeks after the purchase. Despite having the starter and ignition replaced multiple times, the issue persisted. Additionally, there was a constant humming noise and some miscellaneous parts that remained unresolved since I drove off the lot with only 3 miles on the odometer. Although I brought my Amigo to 4 different Isuzu Dealerships, the starting problem has never been fixed correctly. Overall, I still love the look of the vehicle, but I don't like the headaches caused by being stranded too many times.

  4. Theodore Breitenberg 2024-04-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I paid only $13,300 for the basic version of this SUV, which has a 4 cylinder 5 speed. Unfortunately, the clutch went early at only 29K miles, even though I mostly drove on the freeway after rush hour. I also spilled oil on the engine, which caused the plugs to get soaked due to the design. However, overall, it's been a good vehicle and inexpensive to maintain.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. I bought it on November 13th, 1998, and it has been a reliable companion ever since. As of today, September 23rd, 2008, the total mileage is over 115K. Recently, someone asked to buy it, but I refused because it has been such a great car. I wanted to let you know that the Yokohama tires have reduced the small vibration that I used to feel with the Good Year tires. In 2004, I had the clutch rebuilt for $1000, and it has been running smoothly ever since. In the spring of 2007, the geardrive was oddly out of oil and got noisy, but Ford-WPB fixed it for $1500. Then, the engine overheated at idle, but Ford was able to fix it by changing the oxygen sensor for $600. They also ran diagnostics tests for loss of power and A/C not cooling, which were very helpful. I declined the $1500 A/C work, but Tires-Plus was able to reconnect the radiator return hose in the overflow for a $20 check test. They also recharged the A/C, which is now working perfectly! The soft top needs to be refreshed since it has not been in an overnight garage since 2003. Thank you for taking the time to read about my car!

The car has proven to be a great performer and an exciting drive. Although it has been involved in two accidents, one minor and one more significant, the necessary replacements have only added to its impressive performance. Additionally, it is highly fuel-efficient and ideal for long-distance trips.

I bought my Amigo back in June of '98 and it has been a reliable vehicle ever since. The only major issue I had was when the timing belt broke and ruined the little 4 cylinder engine at 65,000 miles. However, Isuzu replaced it for free due to a tensioner recall, which was a pleasant surprise. The only other minor issue I've had is with the radio volume button, which seems to be stripped or something. Other than that, it has been a fun summer drop top and a great winter vehicle with the 4X4. The 5-speed transmission works great with the little engine, making it a blast to row through the gears and have fun in the sand and snow.

What a fun ride this convertible SUV is! It offers more space than a Jeep and has a very solid construction.

You've found the best value in its class! Not only does it offer more visibility than the RAV or Honda's model, but it's also very fun to drive and does well in the snow!

I've been driving my '98 Amigo for about a year now, and it's been an absolute blast. I've taken it through deep mud and snow, and it's only gotten stuck when I buried it up to the axles. As an 18-year-old driver, I can attest that this car can handle some serious abuse. While parts can be a bit pricey, you can find some great deals online. The only downside is that the SUV is so compact that it can be a bit tricky to work on. It does burn about a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so, but the gas mileage is superior to any other SUV in its class. This just means you'll need to check your oil more often, but the savings on gas more than make up for it. Plus, it's super easy to install a new radio and speakers on your own. And let's not forget about the cool soft top - it's a real hit with the ladies!
