2020 Ford F-450 problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2020 Ford F-450 problems

The 2020 Ford F-450 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. This issue can lead to separation of the wheels and wheel extenders from the vehicle, posing a significant safety risk.

Another problem reported by owners is related to the fuel system. Certain 2021 Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600, and Medium Duty F-650 and F-750 vehicles equipped with 6.7L diesel engines may have a small void in the top-center of the vehicle's underhood secondary fuel filter cap. This void may progress to a pinhole over time, allowing fuel to leak from the top of the secondary fuel filter.

The 2020 Ford F-450 has also been reported to have issues with the driveline. Operating the vehicle at highway speeds may cause the driveline to vibrate and fracture the driveline components or the transmission. This issue can lead to a loss of control of the vehicle, posing a significant safety risk.

In addition to these problems, some owners have reported issues with the vehicle's structure. Certain 2015-2017 F-150, and 2017 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 vehicles originally produced with black or body colored exterior door handles that may have been subsequently equipped with a chrome exterior door handle cover accessory kit purchased from a Ford dealer may have a chrome exterior door handle cover accessory kit that may cause the doors to unlatch in a side impact collision.

Lastly, some owners have reported issues with the vehicle's visibility. Some 2010-2020 vehicles may exhibit distorted glass with a subtle orange peel pattern or streaking etched into the surface. This is caused by hydrofluoric acid which is used in some car wash solutions as a cleaning agent.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2020 Ford F-450. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

Is a F-450 better than a F350?

If the majority of miles you put on your truck involve very heavy towing or hauling, the 450 is the way to go. Towing will be much more pleasant, and the truck will handle much better loaded. Any other case, and I'd go F350 SRW if you want to do some moderately heavy towing and hauling and also want a pleasant daily.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DTXLE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The vehicle is experiencing very erratic shifts between gears. The transmission is slingshot shifting in all gears between 3rd through 6th. If this continues it will undoubtedly blow the transmission out. I work with this truck every day and if it blows it will very likely cause a very big safety hazard as I would very possibly have a load on my trailer and this could force me out of my lane. There is a ford customer satisfaction program number of 21B03 that directly applies to this issue but as of yet they are not approving the fix for it. There is also another safety recall on this truck number 22S22. That also covers this issue we are experiencing.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT8LE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My horn started going off continuously, I got messages on my digital dash system, saying that my lane assist had a fault, my adaptive speed control was faulty, and other system. Safety features were inactive. Ford has an issue, and they acknowledge the issue of the fuse box under the hood randomly coming off, which allows water to get into the fuse system, and start corroding wires which start sending mixed signals and failures to the system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT8LE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: My tailgate came open randomly while pulling a trailer. Ford knows about this issue, but is yet to make a recall and not sure they’re going to cover the damage done to my tailgate. The tailgate randomly came open when I had turned a corner, and when I straightened back out made my truck and trailer jumped all over the road because the tailgate contacted the trailer.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-18
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford F-450. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the transmission experienced rough shifting. The vehicle then inadvertently decelerated and failed to exceed 50 MPH. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The contact then drove to the residence. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there were metal shavings in the transmission and that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in Customer Satisfaction Program: 21B03 (Number One Planetary and Ring Gear Assembly). The failure mileage was approximately 97,000. The VIN was unavailable.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-08
  • VIN: 1ft8w4dt2le
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: RECALL ON MY F450 with no remedy, Ford will not give me an equivalent replacement - this is putting lives in danger. All of the dash engine lights will come on, no ABS, no traction control, no brakes whatsoever, power loss, will not go over 2k RPM. Then truck will not go into park when it does stop. It is an extreme danger to myself and others to not be able to drive or brake my truck. Ford is “too busy” to even diagnose the problem even though it is clearly because of the recall. This needs to be remedied before someone gets hurt.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-02
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DTXLE
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Vibration at highway speeds aprox. 15,000 miles that continues to worsen to a slight vibration at idle and vibration/bounce/hop at aprox. 30,000 miles, to a violent shake at aprox. 45,000 miles, making it very hard to maintain the control needed to stay in your lane and extremely hard to come to a stop in an emergency braking sitiation. When towing or hauling the defect seems to worsen. The vehicle has been to two dealerships that has kept the vehicle over 90 days, replacing or repairing a large list of components, they are always able to reproduce and confirm the defect, but have not been able to repair it.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-17
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DTXLE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Sudden acceleration while braking. While towing a gooseneck trailer aprox. 25,000 lbs, with the truck in tow/haul mode and the exhaust/engine brake turned on, started down a long winding 8% grade, could feel the engine brake working as normal, holding the truck from gaining speed, as the truck entered the second turn, the truck lunged forward gaining a lot of speed causing me to quickly stab the brakes, the truck continued this type of on/off cycle with quickly acclerating while standing on the brakes to try and control it until I leaned over and swithched the engine brake off, making it necassary to ride the brakes down the grade to maintain a safe speed and not lose control. By the time we reached the bottom, smoke was coming from both the truck and trailer brakes and the stopping power was nearly gone. The truck has done this intermittently without warning and is a major concern for safety. A search on truck forums show a number of people with the same concern. Dealer has been able to reproduce the problem, but does not have a solution. I beleive its a defect in the new 10 speed transmission and tied to the ongoing vibration / shake / hop / bounce we are experiancing.

  • VIN: 1ft8w4dt8le
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Ford F-450. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed with metal shards in the fuel system. The dealer informed the contact that the fuel system kit needed to be replaced but parts were on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 33,875.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-21
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT3LE
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: 225/70R 19.5 Cont Hybrid HD3. Truck is a 2021 F450 dually pickup. Mileage on the OEM tires is about 20,000 miles. The tire "blew out" while pulling a horse trailer with 7 horses on board. I personally checked tire pressure before departure. Our driver was able to get to safety without harm. Had the blow out occurred on a front tire, the results could have been catastrophic. Road side assistance told us he has had 3 other tires, same truck, same tire, same age, blow out in the last 7 days. I know from your site and consumer reports, Continental has a huge recall campaign for blow outs. ALSO there is "0" inventory of this tire for us to replace our bad tire, due to high failure rates. I have called Continental about this. They deny any problem nor responsibility. 0 contrition Contact there is manager "Rod" at 618-242-7398.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT8LE
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: On two separate occasions, while towing a 5th wheel trailer, the tailgate opened by itself, coming in contact with the 5th wheel while turning. There was no warning or indication that the tailgate had opened. The tailgate was not opened by a person or by a bumping the keyfob -- it opened completely on its own.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-03
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT6LE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Unknown. So, on May 30th, 2021 my passenger side main battery blew up for no reason. I took it to Autozone and we checked the system and everything seem fine and had the correct voltage. On July 3, 2021 my truck started smoking. I pulled over, put the truck in park and shut off the truck. I looked around trying to locate the cause of the smoke but couldn’t. I opened all the doors to air out the truck. Everything seemed to be fine at the time so I got back in and started driving. I got about 200 yards and then smoke started to come heavily out of the vents on the left and right side of the stereo. I pulled over again in a safe area away from cars and building, put the the truck in park and shut off the truck. I looked in the vents where the smoke was coming from and noticed flames. I grabbed my keys, ran to my trailer, grabbed a 7 gallon jug of water, ran back, called 911 and proceeded to try and put the fire out. While talking to 911 they asked where I was and address. I didn’t know but they kept insisting. I stopped located a number on a building and told them. Turned around after 30 seconds or so and the entire dash was engulfed in flames. I grabbed my computer, Xbox, and dogs. One dog got scared and ran into the trailer it took me about a min to get her out. I looked back at the truck and the whole truck at that time was engulfed in flames

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-31
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT0LE
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER
  • Summary: Kept smelling faint diesel fuel odor would come and go while driving for 11,000 miles, never saw a leak, then became worse and saw drops on driveway size of a dime. Found a steady drip of fuel only while running from fuel filter under hood above valve cover, replaced filter and leak stopped. Closer look found heavy stains from fuel leak on top of engine. Has been that way since new. Leak now fixed. This could be a fire hazard. Glad I found it.

2020 Ford F-450 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2020 Ford F-450.

2019-08-28
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:RECLINER
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2020 F-150 and 2019-2020 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty pickup trucks, and 2018-2019 Ford Explorer, 2019-2020 Expedition, and 2020 Escape vehicles equipped with driver and/or passenger's manual front seat back recliner mechanisms. Also included are certain 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with rear outboard seats and manual seat back recliner mechanisms. The recliner mechanisms may be missing the third pawl required for seat back strength, resulting in a loose seat back. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 202, "Head Restraints" and 207, "Seating Systems."
  • Consequence: A seat back with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the seat structure and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 21, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C07.
