2006 Pontiac Solstice problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Solstice is a sports car that was produced by Pontiac. Introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Solstice roadster began production in Wilmington, Delaware, starting in mid-2005 for the 2006 model year. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4 L I4 engine, producing 177 hp (132 kW) and 166 lb⋅ft (225 N⋅m) of torque. The exterior styling of the production Solstice is similar to that of the 2002 Solstice concept that preceded it. Production of the Solstice was to be running before summer 2005, but delays at the Wilmington plant pushed volume production to the fourth quarter. The new hardtop targa top 2009 model was announced in mid-2008. The Solstice uses the GM Kappa platform, which also underpins the Saturn Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo G2X. It was the brand's first two-seater since the Pontiac Fiero was discontinued in 1988.

The Solstice was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award and Design of the Year award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) for 2006. It was a runaway hit for Pontiac, with 7,000 orders in the first 10 days of availability and 6,000 more orders before winter. Although first-year production was planned at 7,000, GM apologized to customers for delays and increased production, delivering 10,000 by March 1.

Following the 2008 economic recession, GM discontinued the Pontiac division. Production ended with the closure of the Wilmington Assembly plant in July 2009.

Common 2006 Pontiac Solstice problems

The Pontiac Solstice, a compact sports car produced between 2006 and 2010, has gained a reputation for certain common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues can affect the overall ownership experience and satisfaction with the vehicle.

  • Build Quality and Corner Cutting: The Pontiac Solstice was rushed into production, which led to a decline in build quality and various issues that affected different iterations of the vehicle. This has been a source of frustration for owners, as the car's design and styling did not live up to its performance capabilities due to the compromises made during production.
  • Lack of Trunk Space: The Pontiac Solstice has a reputation for having a severely limited amount of trunk space, which can make even simple tasks like shopping trips difficult. This issue is further exacerbated when the top is down, as it takes up even more valuable trunk real estate.
  • Reliability Issues: The Pontiac Solstice has experienced several recalls and reliability issues, which have negatively impacted its reputation among owners. These issues range from electrical system problems to airbag safety concerns, and they can affect both the vehicle's performance and the owner's peace of mind.
  • Cracking Headers: The Pontiac Solstice's cast iron headers are prone to cracking over time due to the drastic change in temperature and the metal's flexibility.
  • Lack of Practicality: The Pontiac Solstice is far from a practical car, with limited storage space, uncomfortable seating, and a cramped cabin. This can make daily driving the vehicle a less enjoyable experience, as it may not meet the needs of drivers looking for a more practical sports car.
  • Inconvenient Battery Placement: Replacing the battery in a Pontiac Solstice is a more complicated process than in most cars, as the battery is located in a less accessible area. This can make battery replacement a more time-consuming and inconvenient process for owners.

These common problems with the Pontiac Solstice can impact the overall ownership experience and satisfaction with the vehicle. While the car has its strengths, such as its unique styling and fun-to-drive nature, these issues are important to consider when evaluating the vehicle as a potential purchase.

What was the biggest problem with the Pontiac Solstice?

Rushed into production, the Pontiac Solstice was a stylish two-seat roadster that never quite lived up to its looks. It was powered by a 2.4-liter, 177-hp four-cylinder engine that sounds and feels harsh when revved. Wide spacing between the gear ratios in the five-speed manual is a major flaw.

How many miles will a Pontiac Solstice last?

may need to be replaced but again the motor if taken care of should be fine . There have been many examples of NAs going strong at 250,000 miles. It appears that a well maintained 2.4 that is not abused can last nearly forever.

Are Pontiac Solstice expensive to maintain?

Pontiac Solstice Repair: Service and Maintenance Cost. The annual maintenance cost of a Pontiac Solstice is $486.

Is the Pontiac Solstice a rare car?

The Pontiac Solstice Coupes are considered to be quite rare: There were a total of 1,266 Solstice Coupes that were able to be manufactured before the production line in Wilmington, Delaware was shut down: 102 pre-production 2009 models, 1,152 sequentially vin'd regular production 2009 models, and 12 pre-production 2010 ...

Is a Solstice a reliable car?

The Solstice (or Sky) is as reliable as any other GM vehicle mechanically, because that is really what it is. I will tell you from experience with an '03 Saab that it will be more reliable than what you are used to. The GXP's turbo 2.0 was GM's first direct-injection gasoline engine.

Why did Pontiac stop making the Solstice?

Although first-year production was planned at 7,000, GM apologized to customers for delays and increased production, delivering 10,000 by March 1. AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-05
  • VIN: 1G2MB33B36Y
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger seat position sensor for the air bag system has failed. This sensor was inspected and supposedly "reinforced" under the GM Recall on this item in 2018, vehicle mileage 22390. It is now 2023, with the vehicle mileage at 25,131. The passenger seat in this vehicle is used very rarely by my wife, so in these 5 years perhaps 400 miles of usage on the component in failure. Contacting GM, they will do nothing regarding this problem from a recall or warranty standpoint. Doing the "fix" that GM should have done in 2018 on this seat is going to cost me $1095 per the dealership phone call this afternoon. So what exactly did NHTSA approve in this recall (reference 17036)? A fix that will not even survive usage for 400 or so miles on an airbag system component? I believe NHTSA needs to revisit this campaign and force GM to supply correct components to enable system performance. How many subsequent failures have happened to the GM vehicle involved in this campaign after the supposed "reinforcement" was installed? If you are seeing these failures than the "fix" was not a "fix". In my vehicles case the "fix" failed, and I now have a vehicle that is not safe to operate with a major, important safety system off line. The fix was already failing in 2020, see complaint number 11353358. It is now a hard fail with the SIR light hard red on the instrument panel telltale.

The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V061000 (Air Bags) however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 25,126.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-25
  • VIN: 1g2mb35b46y
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: The electric system appears to be unsafe, the ignition doesn't turn over and drains the battery every day. I'm also worried about the airbags and other recalls on this car. I contacted the dealer "Dave Kirk Automotive" in Crossville, TN weeks ago. They took the vin # and looked up the recalls. This was a month ago. They said they would get the parts and call me. No one at the dealer has contacted me again. They know there are serious recalls on this vehicle. I need help on this. I'm 74, the car only has 39000 miles on it. This needs to be fixed at once.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-31
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G2MB35B96Y
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I purchased a 2006 Pontiac Solstice from a Lexus dealership in 2020. No known issues were discussed when I purchased the vehicle. The ignition switch turned off while I was driving around a curve which caused engine to stall, and my steering wheel to locked up preventing me from turning. I crashed into a guardrail at 60 mph and my car spun, hitting the back as well. The car is totaled. My airbag did NOT deploy in the crash, resulting in worsened injuries. Thankfully no other cars were involved, but the faulty ignition switch put my safety at risk. The car is available for inspection, and is currently in the hands of my insurance agency who has inspected and totaled it. I did not drive much, and had not experienced this issue prior with my car.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-26
  • VIN: 1g2mb33b96y
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: my car had a recall on it when I bought it for the air bag sensor in the pass seat. I took it in and they patched it...not fixed it but a patch... it has been sat in about 20 times since and now has the light on. I will not pay them to repatch or fix this as they should of fixed it properly the first time, if you OKed the use of a tape patch than you can pay for the proper fix. these should never of been patched. they should of been fixed. it will not go back to the dealer that did the patch as I got the car back with grease on many portions of the neer new like leather as well as the new like exterior of the car along with scratch, dent etc. so somebody needs to find the correct fix and have these cars fixed!! not a patch that last 20 times sat in. this is a low millage car and garage or carport kept, still looks about like a 2 month old car. is is despicable that any body could be permitted to patch something like this!! it was patched by perston hood chevy in fortwalton beach florida.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-05
  • VIN: 1G2MB33B36Y
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WENT FOR DQ, WIFE PURCHASED OUR ICE CREAM. UPON HER RETURN TO THE CAR AND SITTING DOWN, THE DASH PASSENGER AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT STATED SYSTEM WAS "OFF" WITH HER SITTING IN THE SEAT ENGINE RUNNING. THIS CONDITION CONTINUED ON THE DRIVE HOME. NO SIR FAILURE LIGHT INDICATED. WHEN AT HOME, VEHICLE SHUT OFF AND SHE EXISTED. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND SHE GO BACK IN THE CAR AND SAT IN THE SEAT. INDICATOR LIGHT STATED SYSTEM WAS "ON". SO WE HAVE A SYSTEM THAT SOMETIMES SENSES A PASSENGER, AND SOMETIMES NOT. SHE WEIGHS OVER 140 LBS., SO THIS SHOULD NOT BE PART OF THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP IN 2018 FOR THE SEAT SENSOR RECALL FIX - - WHATEVER THEY DID. BELIEVE IT MIGHT BE ONLY A "REINFORCEMENT". CAR IS PRESENTLY AT JUST OVER 24,000 MILES. VERY, VERY LIMITED PASSENGER SEAT USAGE. THE ONLY "OTHER" ELECTRICAL CHANGE IN THIS JOURNEY WAS AT DQ AND DRIVE HOME THE VEHICLE HEADLIGHT SWITCH WAS SET TO PARKING LAMPS. WHEN PULLING INTO THE GARAGE I RESET THIS SWITCH TO "HEADLAMPS". SO THE "ON" CONDITION WAS WITH HEADLAMPS VERSUS THE "OFF INDICATION" WITH PARK LAMPS. THAT SHOULDN'T MATTER, BUT YOU ASKED FOR INFORMATION. REPORTED INFORMATION TO GM, CASE NUMBER 9-6235950579

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 500. *TR CONSUMER STATED I HAD A RECALL FOR MY 2006 PONTIAC SOLTICE I TOOK IT TO A DEALER AND HAD IT WORKED ON TO FIX THE AIRBAG SENSOR FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE. THEY SAID THEY WERE FINISHED, AND EVERYTHING WORKED FINE FOR AWHILE. NOW THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT GOES FROM ON TO OFF FREQUENTLY WHILE SOMEONE SITS IN THE SEAT. I`M WONDERING IF THEY USED THE SAME SENSORS LEFT OVER FROM STOCK FROM 2006 WHICH MAYBE BAD ALSO. WHAT DO I DO BECAUSE I DON`T LIKE THE IDEA OF MY WIFE RIDING ALONG BEING UNCOMFORTABLE, WORRYING ABOUT BEING SAFE. *JB

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-03
  • VIN: 1G2MB33B96Y
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSOR IN MY VEHICLE FAILED AT AROUND 51800 MILES . WITH THIS TYPE OF A SAFETY ISSUE ANY PASSENGER IN THE CAR FACES ADDED RISK IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR AND THE WEIGHT SENSOR FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT DOSEN'T WORK COULD END CATASTROPHICALLY. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE OWNER'S COST TO FIX THIS ITEM IS PROHIBITIVE ($500 - $800), AND THAT THE EARLY FAILURE OF THIS PART IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE. I CHECKED MY VIN NUMBER FOR A RECALL OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE BUT THERE ISN'T ONE FOR MY VEHICLE.

IT HAS BEEN 9 MONTHS AND I HAVE REPEATEDLY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP (FREDERICK MD) BUT THEY TELL ME THERE ARE NO PARTS TO FIX IT. I'VE ALSO CALLED 2 OTHER LOCAL DEALERSHIPS WHO HAVE SAID THE SAME THING. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THE TIME LIMIT FOR THESE REPAIRS IS 10YRS FROM ORIGINAL SALE DATE, WHICH IN MY CASE WOULD BE 2016, FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO REMEDY THE RECALL. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THIS FIXED SO I CAN HAVE A PASSENGER RIDE IN MY CAR?

2006 Pontiac Solstice recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2006 Pontiac Solstice.

2017-01-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. The Passenger Air Bag Suppression System (PPS) sensor may become bent or damaged within the front passenger seat, possibly disabling the front passenger air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag does not deploy as intended, the front passenger has an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: The remedy for this recall is still under development. A permanent remedy is currently under development. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 17036.
2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.

2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2006 Pontiac Solstice car reviews

I had a lot of fun owning this car. It's definitely an attention-grabber and looks great. However, I'm used to driving smoother coupes or sedans, so the rougher ride was a bit of a change for me. After some consideration, I've decided to trade it in. I also opted for the manual transmission, but it's become a bit of a hassle now that I live in a city with endless red lights. I noticed that the engine stuttered a bit in third gear. While it's never broken down on me, I do miss the smoother ride of a bigger four-door car.

  2. Alex Hamill 2024-07-04

It's a sharp looking car and I really loved it. However, it has been in the shop three times and it's currently there. Unfortunately, it stopped running while I was driving down the road and wouldn't start the next time. The last time, all the lights started flashing and it died. I'm concerned about its reliability and safety, especially as a woman who doesn't want to be stranded. If this continues, I may have to consider legal action.

Positive 2006 Pontiac Solstice car reviews

  1. Ludwig Hahn 2024-11-13

Overall, I love the car! However, I think GM could have worked on expanding the legroom for the driver and passenger. The seven-speaker sound system is fantastic to listen to, and even though it's a four-cylinder, it still has some great pickup!

  2. Garry Donnelly 2024-11-08

This is truly a remarkable vehicle! The design is top-notch and reminiscent of classic cars like the Corvette, Mustang, T-Bird, and Cougar Convertible. I find it to be an absolute pleasure to drive. While no vehicle is perfect, the stunning styling of this car is a real knockout. Even at 6'6

  3. Kareem Jacobi 2024-11-06

I love the drive, it's so much fun! The car looks much more expensive than it actually is, and I get asked all the time how much it cost. It's a shame that not many people know about it, even though I've worked for GM for 33 years. The body design is absolutely beautiful, and GM has done a great job with it. Despite its small size, the ride is excellent, which I think is due to the large 18-inch wheels. Overall, I'm really impressed with this car!

  4. Cullen Abernathy 2024-09-12

My dad first introduced me to this car - he works for General Motors in Detroit, MI. I absolutely love it, and it's a great value for what you get! I highly recommend it to everyone!

  5. Johnnie Rath 2024-08-20

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you're getting a decent 24 mpg in mixed driving conditions, which is great. The handling is impressive and the seating is particularly comfortable, especially when compared to other 2-seater convertibles. The Monsoon sound system is fantastic and the power is more than enough for your driving needs. It's also great to hear that raising and lowering the top is a breeze and only takes about 30 seconds. While you may not be able to do a full Costco shopping trip, it's good to know that you can still carry groceries. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
