2019 Hyundai Sonata problems

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2019 Hyundai Sonata problems

The 2019 Hyundai Sonata has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to excessive fuel consumption, cracked oil pans, and alarm system issues.

Excessive fuel consumption is the most widespread complaint among 2019 Sonata owners, with issues appearing within the first 25,000 miles. This problem is typically caused by an oxygen sensor issue, which controls the air-to-fuel ratio. Replacing the sensor costs around $150, depending on local labor rates, and typically fixes the problem.

A cracked oil pan is another problem mentioned by some 2019 Sonata owners at roughly 50,000 miles. Damage to the oil pan is caused by heat cycling and being hit with stones while driving. Replacing the oil pan costs around $650.

Alarm system issues have also been reported on the 2019 Hyundai Sonata in the first 1,000 miles. The problem is caused by software issues with the alarm, which cause it to stay on even after disarming. Most dealerships will update the software for free, while others charge around $50.

Despite these issues, there are no recalls on the 2019 Hyundai Sonata, which is better than other midsize sedans from the same year. Having no recalls simply means that there have not been any widespread issues affecting reliability or safety.

In terms of longevity, a well-maintained 2019 Hyundai Sonata can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other sedans, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $438 per year.

However, as a used 2019 Sonata reaches 100,000 miles, owners should be prepared to replace the tie rods for $200, engine oil cooler costing $375, along with the water pump, which costs around $650.

Some 2019 Sonata owners have reported issues with the engine, specifically the 2.4L Theta engine, which has been known to have sludge issues. However, the 2.5L engine, introduced in 2021, has also been rumored to have problems.

Other issues reported by 2019 Sonata owners include a lack of anti-theft features, which has led to some cars being stolen. Some owners have also reported issues with dealerships, including long wait times for repairs and refusal to reimburse for repairs performed at other service centers.

In summary, the 2019 Hyundai Sonata has several common problems, primarily related to excessive fuel consumption, cracked oil pans, and alarm system issues. Despite these issues, the car has no recalls and can last around 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. However, potential buyers should be aware of the reported issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF1KH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In April of 2024 initially the car was under warranty. I took my vehicle to the Edmond Hyundai dealership to see why I kept having to put oil in the car in between oil changes. The dealership said iI needed an oil consumption test to determine if the loss of oil amount was excessive. They changed the oil and i drove it 1000 miles and returned it to the dealership. They said it was was around 1 quart low, which is acceptable and "normal". This isn't normal. I tried to get them to check the engine again and do other tests but they wouldn't. It is now October of 24' and I am still putting oil in between oil changes because the light comes on. I took the car back to the dealership on 10/19 and they said the only thing they could do is another consumption test to determine if the oil loss is excessive. I asked them to do a more thorough check of the engine and cited the previous time I brought the car in for the same issue that was not resolved. The mileage is now just over the warranty threshold, but they are still wanting me to pay for whatever service needs to be done to the vehicle, whether it's a combustion cleaning or a new engine. The safety of the car is of concern now and since this car is driven by the three drivers in the family, I do not want them put at a risk on the road if something fails because of oil loss and engine seize. Hyundai needs to be held accountable and honor warranty, safety, and service. The dealers need to help the customer and go above and beyond. The staff at Edmond Hyundai kept going back to the consumption test and all the steps they need to follow before they could send in a submission for doing a combustion cleaning when clearly there was an issue. I am beyond frustrated with the lack of concern for safety and customer satisfaction.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 5NPE34AF4KH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Around the 70,000 to 80,000 mile range, I began to notice that I needed more frequent oil changes. Additionally, when making turns, the oil pressure light would illuminate. I reported these concerns to the service manager, Steve Purvis, at Noblesville Hyundai, who advised that the light simply indicated the need for an oil change. Due to the ignorance of Steve Purvis, I took my vehicle to Hyundai of Carmel, where the issue was not addressed until I reached 97,000 miles. During this time, the valve covers were replaced twice, yet there were no active leaks, and the problem persisted. Hyundai subsequently denied my request for an oil consumption test to further diagnose the issue. I then took my vehicle to a different shop, where a mini oil consumption test revealed that my car burned over 2 quarts of oil from Friday to Monday. Additionally, my start/stop system has ceased functioning, preventing me from starting the vehicle. I have also noted that there are open recalls for Hyundai vehicles, yet my VIN is not recognized under these recalls. I have incurred significant expenses related to these ongoing issues. My safety has been put to risk because the oil can burn completely out and cause the car to break down in the middle of traffic like it has before. Hyundai dealership has confirmed the car has an oil burning issue, as well as an independent shop by the name of Auto Tech in Indianapolis. Auto Tech has also confirmed that the start/stop system is causing my car to not start. The oil pressure light is not consistent when my oil gets low. Some times it comes on, other times it does not.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF1KH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have had to change my spark plugs 3 times since May due to the fact that I keep getting oil in them. My car also goes through an excessive amount of oil. Within 2 weeks of having my oil changed I had to start adding more oil. But it does not ever have any on the ground under my car. My piston oil rings are not keeping oil out of the area where my spark plugs are located.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
  • VIN: 5NPE34AF4KH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine has been leaking oil for awhile. After close inspection i discovered a tiny crack in oil pan. There is no damage whatsoever to the oil pan. After much research online it appears many other hyundai owners have the same leak from a crack in oil pan in exact same spot. If left unchecked it would result in engine damage from low oil level. There is a spot weld for drain plug backing and the crack develops at this spot weld. No damage or impact has caused this crack as other owners experience same issue. Oil pan had to be replaced as leak was getting worse at crack

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF9KH
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Drivers side seat belt strap does not retract back when removed and has faulty latch which sometimes pops out. Dealer told us that because the car had over 60,000 miles on it that we would be responsible for payment to replace the pretensions and other internal parts plus the latch. This car was bought new in 2019 and had only been involved in one accident which the seat belt was not used due to the fact that the car was parked when it was struck. Since this is a safety issue which could result in my death or serious injury in the event of a vehicle accident I am taking a chance evey time i drive this vehicle. The approximate cost according to hyundai would be around $1800.00 - $2000.00. I consider this a manufacturer defect that hyundai should replace and be responsible for the cost. They refuse to fix this issue unless I pay for the repair. I never heard of a seat belt having a mileage cut off at any amount of mileage. Please advise me if you can enforce safety defect repair to be paid for by hyundai. If you are not able to hold hyundai liable I would appreciate any entity that you may know of that can make them replace for free the defective belt and latch. I'm afraid to drive this car without a working seat belt on the drivers side nor do I have the outrageous money for it to be repaired at my expense.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: 5NPE34AF7KH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have noticed a great amount of oil usage here in the past 2 months, I have been having my oil changed every 4,500 miles for the last 4 years. After having it changed 6 weeks ago I was coming home from work and my oil light came on so when I got up the next morning I went out and checked the level of my oil and it was barely any oil in my car, so I immediately added the oil I needed to fill what was needed . I then started to monitor my oil levels and it seems that my car was using about a quart to a quart and a half every 6-7 days, I took my car to the mechanic shop and they told me return my back to the dealer because they have been seeing at least 3-4 Hyundia's weekly come in with the same problems. So today as I was coming home from work I tried to accelerate and my car just started sputtering and slowing down so I had to gradually accelerate while noticing my engine light flashing, so I had to drive 30mph in order to get to auto parts store to get the code read for the engine light and the guy told me that he also has seen a few these same codes on the Hyundia's lately. I think this really needs to be addressed immediately and put on the recall list , because this is a serious problem because my car stalling in the middle of the highway is not safe and causing people some real life head aches and serious out of pocket money that we don't have , so now my engine has completely shut down and I don't have a second vehicle and i have to get my car to the dealer tomorrow to see what can be done. Safety and taking ownership of the problem should be #1 priority .

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF9KH
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I own a 2019 Hyundai Sonata with an original manufacturer set of 205/65 R16 95H Kumho Solus TA31 tires on it. I noticed around a month ago that all 4 of the tires have cracks in between the treads, mostly on the outer and inner treads of the 4 tread areas. These cracks are all around and significant. I am afraid to drive on them. I have brought this defect to the attention of Kumho tires over the phone and to the dealership I bought my car from. There is approximately 34,000 miles currently on my car. These tires are supposed to rated for 60,000 miles. They are trying to tell me that they will not warranty their tires with ozone or weather cracking over 4 years old from the date of the tire manufacture stamped on the tire. I believe this is not weather related. I believe it is a defect in the tire and they are trying to blame weather. Even if the problem is what they call "weather" related that should not preclude a consumer/purchaser of a vehicle with their tires on it from pursuing a claim. Their tires should be able to withstand any "weather" and if not they should inform consumers as such. This is a "safety" issue and should NOT be taken lightly. I would like the NHTSA to investigate this issue further. Thank you.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
  • VIN: 5NPE34AF4KH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine oil consumption failure. My car would not even make it to the 3,000 mile oil change without the low oil warning light coming on. Brought it to D'Arcy Hyundai in Joliet, IL for the consumption test..after 1,000 miles my car was down 2 quarts! They then did a combustion chamber cleaning. This cleaning made it so my car lags as it's driving and wouldn't shift properly and before it even left the dealership, the starter went out. Brought it back and they claim that after 1,000 miles the oil reads FULL, not any oil used whatsoever-which isn't possible. They are now denying fixing the engine. I am furious and when I get stuck again due to the oil consumption issue, they will make me start all over again and it may not be covered due to being over the mileage shortly. (I have about 2,000 miles left of my warranty) My sister has a Kia and the same garbage was pulled with her vehicle! She also had issues after the combustion cleaning costing her a starter, battery and alternator. HYUNDAI and EVERY DEALERSHIP knows this issued exists and the recall should be made immediately without all of this garbage.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF3KH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Airbag light came on. Car is in otherwise perfect shape (red flag). Brought to Hyundai dealer. Was told it was a short somewhere on front passenger side. But it will cost $250 to figure out where. Then possibly over $1000 to fix it!! Upon researching it I found many complaints on same issue on otherwise normal good condition sonata’s. Clearly they used inferior components designed to fail. Similar to their stealable cars (with a USB cable) I’m sure you’re fermi liar with. They hid that until TIC TOK put out videos showing how to. They HAD TO fix it due to owners auto insurance going up (way up). I can’t afford to repair this pressing safety issue. Hyundai should be held responsible for using knowingly faulty parts in their air bag system then charging customer large $ just to make an otherwise perfectly running car safe to operate. Oh, then they said they’d offer me a “loaner” till fixed. But their “loner” costs $50 per day!! That’s a RENTAL not a loaner.

The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 5NPE24AF0KH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Starting in July 2023 I have noticed that the oil consumption for my car is racing through the engine. I barely make it 1000 miles before the oil is completely gone. After 2 local oil changes - I decided to take it to the Hyundai dealer where I purchased the car. This was in October - I have brought my car in 4 times for 1000 mile oil consumption tests. I had to add an additional visit due to the fact that Hyundai changed the testing standards. Now I have to bring it again today - Hyundai has not told me what the next step is other than I have to leave the car there all day - after they speak to tech support they will determine next steps. Most likely a combustion cleaning. Then I have to start the 1000 mile consumption tests again. I live 35 mins from the dealer - I have had to hire someone to take me there to leave car - and I then have to take mass transit to work. There are never any loaners because they are booked months in advance. I have had to rent numerous cars for long distance travel due to the mileage meter of 1000 miles on my car - I am not allowed to go over - if I do have to start all over again. That happened to me the first time. My car is crap at this point - I am not able to use it as I should be able to and Hyundai is giving us the run around. I have been contacted about trading it in and getting a new Hyundai - what a scam. I am not the only person - there are so many of us - follow the chats on Facebook and Reddit - nobody is helping us. The staff said if your engine seizes - that would be great. People are seizing on highways - that is very scary to me. Why is this not recalled yet?

Negative 2019 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Cary Runolfsdottir 2024-11-11

I have owned two Hyundai vehicles, but unfortunately, both have experienced electronic issues. The power steering (electronic) of my first vehicle, an Elantra, failed at 30,000 miles. Currently, my 2019 Sonata is in the shop for its second electronic failure at 43,000 miles. However, I am confident that the control modules will be fixed soon, and I am eagerly awaiting their arrival. Despite these setbacks, I remain a loyal Hyundai customer and look forward to continuing my relationship with the brand.

  2. Maximo Kuhlman 2024-10-04

undefinedThe Blue Link feature was supposed to last a long time, but it ends in 3 months and I paid for it. The windshield on both upper sides, basically about 3 inches from each edge, is poorly made and has waves in it. During winter, I can't get the wipers to clean the windshield and ice forms. The defroster is poor and can't melt it. It seems like Hyundai doesn't care about the quality of their vehicles. I have called two dealers and Hyundai about a small blue light close to the switch that operates the sunroof, but they don't seem to know anything about it. It feels like they lack any care for customers after the sale. I would love to get rid of it and wish I hadn't bought it. It's not even listed as any rating for cars in Consumer Reports. When I took the car to the selling dealer for an oil and filter change, the service person came out and showed me an in-cabin air filter that was filthy. I knew it wasn't from my car as I had changed it two weeks prior and it wasn't the brand I put in. This is the usual scam played by a lot of dealers. I showed them the receipt when I had bought it and got pretty upset. I also showed them the areas on the windshield where it is wavy, but they couldn't care less. As I have said before, service after the sale is a joke. Having worked as a service manager for 15 years, I know great service. I can't imagine treating customers like that. MOTTO: Service makes Sales.

  3. Jonatan Batz 2024-08-16

This car has exhibited issues with vibration during driving despite having only 300 miles on the odometer. Additionally, taller individuals may find it challenging to enter and exit the vehicle, and the styling is not up to par with the competition. However, I am confident in my assessment of these shortcomings and believe that they can be addressed to improve the overall quality of the car.

  4. Francis Crist 2024-08-11

Although there have been some changes to the 2019 Sonata model, such as the removal of Sirius and the need to plug in your phone for hands-free calling, I am confident in my decision to trade in our 2015 Sonata for this newer model. While there may be some minor inconveniences, I believe that the overall quality and features of the 2019 Sonata make it a worthwhile investment. Thank you for your understanding.

  5. Geovany Cremin 2024-02-20

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with you regarding the Hyundai car. I've had some issues with the engine and engine oil consumption, and unfortunately, the dealership didn't inform me about it. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you can make an informed decision. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2019 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

Sonata Limited has everything you could ask for and great MPG. Smooth and comfortable ride.

  2. Jermain Simonis 2024-10-20

Happy 2-year anniversary to my Quartz White 2019 Sonata SE! I've had no issues or problems, except for a blown DRL lightbulb. The car feels solid, handles well, and is quiet. Plus, I easily get 33 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway using cruise control. The trunk is spacious and people rave about the back seat room. I've taken this car on long trips and it's very comfortable. Interestingly, people mistake it for an Audi or a Lexus! This is actually my third Sonata and I've never had any problems with insurance or maintenance. Although there are some complaints about too much hard plastic in the cabin and the black interior being a bit boring, I'm not too bothered. I'm also happy to report that my car has better-than-average safety crash data. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase, especially considering the $18,000 out-the-door price!

  3. Henry Heathcote 2024-10-14

You've got yourself a great vehicle that comes packed with all the latest technology. Plus, it's impressive that you're getting 39 mph on the highway!

  4. Javonte Spinka 2024-10-09

Great to hear that you enjoyed your ride! The technology, gas mileage, bright lights, and price all sound like fantastic features. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Great warranty and roadside service package. Great suspension. Great value!
