The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series consists of the BMW F10 (sedan version), F18 (long-wheelbase sedan), BMW F11 (wagon, marketed as Touring) and BMW F07 (fastback/hatchback, marketed as Gran Turismo) executive cars and were produced by BMW from January 2010 (for the 2011 model year) to 2017, with F10 being launched on 20 March 2010 to domestic market and F11 in the summer of 2010. The F07 Gran Turismo was produced from early September 2009 to 2017, being launched in the domestic German market in late October 2009.

The F10 5 Series shares a platform with the F01 7 Series full-size luxury sedan and the F12 6 Series executive-sized grand tourers. The F10 generation is the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain, a turbocharged V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5), active rear-wheel steering (called "Integral Active Steering"), electric power steering, double-wishbone front suspension, an LCD instrument cluster (called "Black Panel Display") and automatic parking (called "Parking Assistant"). A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F18) was sold in China, Mexico, Turkey and the Middle East. Introduced in 2011, the M5 model is powered by the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Gran Turismo (F07) is the first and only 5 Series to be produced in a fastback body style with a hatchback truck opening.

In February 2017, the G30 5 Series was released as the successor to the F10. G32 6 Series Gran Turismo (based on the G30 platform) succeeded the F07.

Common 1998 Bmw 528i problems

The BMW 528i from 1998, known as the E39, is a popular choice among car enthusiasts. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of.

  • Electrical Glitches: The BMW 528i, like many modern cars, can suffer from electrical issues. Some drivers have reported intermittent problems with the indicators, radio switch, and dashboard cluster. These issues can be caused by a faulty fuse box or other electrical components. It's best to consult with a local mechanic or auto electrician to diagnose and repair these problems.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are common in high-mileage cars, and the BMW 528i is no exception. The rocker cover gasket and oil filter cap are the most common sources of oil leaks in the E39. These leaks can be caused by wear and tear, particularly in older models. It's essential to address oil leaks promptly, as they can lead to more severe problems, such as engine damage.
  • Sticking Valves: Early 528i models are known to get stuck valves from running on high-sulphur petrol. When you're having trouble with your valves, you'll often hear popping or ticking noises, which increase in volume and intensity as the car accelerates. Other signs to look out for include blue smoke from the exhaust and loss of engine power. You should replace stuck valves to get your car working as usual.

In conclusion, the BMW 528i from 1998 is a reliable car, but it's essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to avoid more severe issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems and ensure the car's longevity.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-02-10
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: TWO MAJOR COMPLAINTS: 1. TRANSMISSION OF THE CAR BROKE DOWN COMPLETELY WITHIN 82,000 MILES. I HAD TO SPEND A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. 2. POWER STEERING OF THE CAR HAD EXPERIENCED LEAK SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. STILL AFTER SO MANY YEARS THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN PROPERLY RECTIFIED DESPITE THE FACT THAT I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER. 3. AFTER I GAVE MY CAR TO THE ANN ARBOR BMW DEALER, ONCE THEY REPLACED SOME UNRELATED MECHANICAL COMPONENTS THAT COST ME OVER $600. HOWEVER, AFTER PAYING THE MONEY WHEN I SHOWED THAT THE PROBLEM DID NOT SOLVE, THE MECHANICS ADDED SOME BRAKE FLUID AND THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY DISAPPEARED. THE DEALER DID NOT REIMBURSE THE MONEY FOR INAPPROPRIATELY CHANGING UNNECESSARY COMPONENTS. AGAIN AFTER A FEW MONTHS WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK WHEN THE PROBLEM RESURFACED DUE TO LOW BRAKE FLUID.R. AFTER I DROVE THE CAR OUT OF DEALERS PREMISE, THE ENGINE STARTED GETTING HEATED UP. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AND LEFT IT WITH THE DEALER WHO CALLED ME THE NEXT DAY ASKING ME TO PAY ABOUT $250 TO CHANGE THE THERMOCOUPLE, WHICH I AUTHORIZED. HOWEVER, AFTER SEVERAL HOURS THE DEALER CLAIMED THAT THE ENGINE WAS STILL GETTING HEATED UP AND DEMANDED AN OPEN AUTHORIZATION SO THAT THEY COULD OPEN UP THE ENGINE. WHEN I ASKED HIM HOW MUCH IT COULD COST ME, THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST UP TO $5000. THE DEALER HELD MY CAR FOR OVER 14 DAYS WITHOUT GIVING ME A TEMPORARY CAR OR VERIFYING WHETHER THE ENGINE WAS REALLY GETTING HEATED UP AFTER HE CHANGED THE THERMOCOUPLE. THE DEALER CLAIMED THAT IT WOULD BE DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE CAR IN THAT CONDITION. AFTER 14 DAYS, DESPITE WRITING TO BMW AMERICA AND THE DEALERS HEAD OFFICE, THE DEALER KEPT ON CLAIMING THAT I WOULD HAVE TO AUTHORIZE THEM FOR FURTHER WORK THAT MIGHT COST ME AT LEAST $1500. FINALLY, I DECIDED TO TAKE THE CAR FROM THE DEALER AND GIVE TO ANOTHER MECHANICS WHO FOUND OUT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE. TILL NOW THE ENGINE DOES NOT HEAT UP. *TR

PULLED OVER AND INSPECTED COOLANT SYSTEM AND FOUND THAT THE NECK HAD BROKEN OFF THE RADIATOR(COMMON PROBLEM WITH E39) ALLOWING COOLANT TO SPRAY INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS TRAVELLING SLOWLY AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER RAPIDLY BEFORE CAR OVERHEATED. COULD HAVE CAUSED A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF IT HAD OCCURED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. CAR WAS TOWED TO MECHANIC, WHO REPLACED OLD RADIATOR WITH AN AFTERMARKET BRAND THAT IS MORE ROBUST THAN BMW RAD. I WAS NOT COMFORTABLE USING A BMW RADIATOR DUE TO THEIR CHEAP AND FLAWED DESIGN.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-05
  • VIN: WBADD6328WB
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE SERVICED AND A POWERSTEERING HOSE REPLACED, THE VEHICLE WAS LOOSING A LOT OF FUEL IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT (7 GALLONS IN 10 MILES). IT TURNED OUT TO BE A FUEL LINE CONNECTION ON THE DRIVERS SIDE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT THAT WAS NOT FULLY CONNECTED AND SPRAYED FUEL OUT. THE CONNECTION IS A FACTORY STANDARD QUICK CONNECT TYPE.. IN MY OPINION, FUEL LINES SHOULD NOT BE OF THIS TYPE OF QUICK CONNECTION, SINCE FAILURE TO PROPERLY CONNECT THE LINES MAY HAVE DETRIMENTAL RESULTS. FUEL LINES SHOULD HAVE THREADED OR SIMILAR TYPE OF CONNECTION. ONCE DISCONNECTED THEY WOULD REQUIRE AN EFFORT IN CONNECTING AND MAY NOT RESULT IN AN INADVERTANT OVERSIGHT. IN MY CASE, IT JUST SPRAYED OUT LOTS OF FUEL IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME WHILE DRIVING.
