Common 2020 Genesis G80 problems

The Genesis G80, a luxury vehicle produced by Hyundai's premium brand, has been reported to have several common issues by its owners. These issues vary by model year and can affect different components of the vehicle, including the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, and electrical system.

One common issue reported with the 2017-2018 Genesis G80 is rough shifting, which can occur when the vehicle is accelerating or decelerating. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a low fluid level, a dirty transmission filter, or a faulty shift solenoid. In some cases, a software update may be required to address the issue.

Another issue reported with the 2017-2018 Genesis G80 is problems with the infotainment system, which can include glitches, freezing, or unresponsiveness. These issues can be caused by software bugs or faulty hardware components and may require a software update or replacement of the affected components to address the issue.

For the 2019-2020 Genesis G80, some owners have reported issues with the fuel system, with the vehicle hesitating or stalling when accelerating, particularly when starting from a stop. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump or a problem with the fuel injectors.

In the 2021-2022 Genesis G80, some drivers have reported problems with the advanced safety features, such as the lane departure warning system being overly sensitive and providing warnings or braking unexpectedly when there is no danger. Similarly, some drivers have reported issues with the adaptive cruise control system, which can be slow to respond or provide unexpected braking or acceleration. Additionally, some drivers have reported issues with the vehicle's electrical system, including flickering lights, a dead battery, or a malfunctioning power window or door lock. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator, a corroded battery terminal, or a problem with the wiring.

It is important to note that not all Genesis G80 models will experience these issues, and that some drivers may never encounter any problems with their vehicle. However, if you do experience any of these issues, it is important to address them promptly to prevent further damage and ensure that your vehicle is operating safely and efficiently.

I previously owned a 2015 G80 before upgrading to the 2018 model, but I must say I prefer my older car. The noise level in this luxury car is quite high, with noticeable road and undercarriage noise. Despite bringing it to the dealer's attention and even changing the tires to Michelin at my own expense, the noise level remains higher than my previous car. However, I do appreciate the other features of the car. As an 80-year-old, this will likely be my last car purchase.

  2. Easter Grant 2025-05-11

The car has a lot of great features and a sporty look. However, I have experienced some issues with the front dash making noise and the cabin being too loud for my liking. Unfortunately, my local dealer has not been able to fix the problem despite multiple visits. While the service could be better, I understand that Genesis is still working to compete with other luxury car brands. Although the plastic dash does not meet luxury car standards, the car offers many features for the price. The seat piping, while attractive, can be uncomfortable during long rides. Overall, I paid 58k for this car and while I miss my previous Lexus dealer, I still appreciate the value that Genesis offers.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Genesis G80 Sport. This is actually my second Genesis, my first being a Hyundai Genesis which I absolutely loved. I decided to upgrade to the G80 Sport for a change and I have to say, it's been a great ride so far. Living in Illinois, I was a bit worried about how it would handle the harsh winters and potholes, but my first G80 had no issues at all. However, I did have a few tire mishaps with this one, which is why I'm so grateful that I decided to get the tire and wheel package. It definitely came in handy when I had a blowout from hitting a pothole. Thankfully, the warranty covered it and all the other tire issues I had throughout the winter. I did have some concerns about the fragility of the Continental tires that came with the car, especially since I had no issues with them in California. But I have to say, Genesis really impressed me with their customer service. They understood my concerns and replaced all four tires with Michelins, which was amazing. While the Michelins did have some performance issues on wet pavement, they held up really well in terms of blowouts and durability. The only downside was that they were a bit expensive to replace. Overall, I'm really happy with my G80 Sport and the great customer service I received from Genesis. Thanks for listening!I have a really nice and comfortable car, but it doesn't perform like a sport version of a luxury car should. The tires are staggered, which means the back tires are wider than the front ones, making it difficult to find a tire company that has both sizes I need. Staggered tires in any sport car can't be rotated, only moved from side to side, which means they wear out faster. This means that a 45,000 mile tire might only last 21,500 miles. It's frustrating to have to replace these expensive tires every 13 or 14 months. If it was a Corvette, I would know this going in and would hope I wouldn't have to replace 8 tires in the first year. But I guess replacing the tires is just part of the deal when you buy a sports car or even a sport version of a luxury car. It would have been a lot better if the Michelins performed better. My advice is to never get staggered wheels on a car without knowing that you have to replace them in half the tire rating mileage. When buying a car with low profile, performance tires, never buy the Continentals. The regular Continentals may be just fine, but the low profile tires, in the northern states, are not a good value. I'm frustrated to have an awesome car that costs $60k (not what I paid) and have the inconvenience of flat tires every 3 weeks. Thank goodness I took the warranty. I'm working with the sales manager to take what equity I have and roll it into a new G80 3.8 AWD Ultimate with matching tires. My payment will be just a little higher and I would start payments over at 60 months. I'm getting 36,000 more miles of free maintenance, fresh brakes which would be replaced in 8-10 more months, and a fresh set of 60,000 mile rated tires that can be rotated.Yes, the whole ordeal cost me some money. However, I learned a few valuable lessons which I wanted to share here on cars.com.

I recently purchased the Genesis G80 with the premium package and I must say, it's a beautifully styled car that performs exceptionally well. The luxurious cabin is incredibly comfortable and quiet, making for a truly enjoyable driving experience. What's even better is that this car costs thousands less than its competitors' equivalent vehicles. If you're looking for a car that offers great value for money, the Genesis G80 is definitely worth considering. However, if you're solely focused on the brand name, then this car may not be for you. It's important to look beyond the nameplate and consider the car's features and performance. I test drove the Audi A6 and Lexus GS 350, but ultimately, the Genesis G80 won me over. The G80 sport model, with its 6 cylinder twin turbo and 365 horses, is a beast on the road. However, I opted for the G80 with premium package, which still boasts a respectable 311 horses and a smooth ride. During my test drive, I found the pick up to be more than acceptable with good passing ability, and the car handled bumpy roads with ease. Overall, I highly recommend the Genesis G80 for anyone looking for a stylish, comfortable, and high-performing car that won't break the bank. The G80 was an absolute pleasure to drive. Despite the uneven pavement, I barely felt any bumps or jarring, which made for a smooth and comfortable ride. The cabin was impressively quiet, with minimal road noise or wind, and the engine was so quiet at times that I wasn't even sure it was running. While I did notice slightly more body lean when taking curves at higher speeds compared to the A6 or GS350, it was nothing significant. Plus, when you put the car into 'sport' mode, the steering and suspension tighten up, which helps. Although this does come at a cost of slightly poorer gas mileage, the overall experience of driving this car was luxurious and enjoyable. The roomy cabin was a particular highlight, and I appreciated the inclusion of many technology safety features that other brands often charge extra for. Despite some minor differences in performance compared to its competitors, the G80 still stood out to me as a top choice. When the sales manager worked up the price for me, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was $4,000 - $10,000 less than the competition, which made my decision even easier. Genesis is definitely doing everything right to establish itself as a viable luxury brand, and the 3 year concierge service is just one example of their commitment to customer satisfaction. If your car needs servicing (which, by the way, is included for the first 3 years), they will even bring you a loaner and take your car, making the process as convenient as possible.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2018 g80 sport with AWD. Unfortunately, my dealer closed about 6 months after I bought the car and there isn't another one within 60 miles. While I have valet pick up service, the nearest service dealer only has Hyundai's as loaners and they don't know how to service the G80. In fact, my tire pressure light was on when they drove it back to me after an oil change and the tech didn't know the correct tire pressure! I've also been waiting over 4 weeks now to hear back from Genesis regarding these issues. I believe that the service I've received is not up to par with what I would expect from a middle class sedan, let alone Mercedes or BMW. Thank you for listening to my experience.

Positive 2020 Genesis G80 car reviews

  1. Grover Collier 2025-11-08

I've only put approximately 8,000 miles on my car, so let me start with the good stuff: myself, neighbors, and friends are all extremely impressed with the design, fit, comfort, and just about everything! However, there is one really awkward item - the remote start requires accessing an app from your smartphone. Here's my main complaint: on the open road doing 70+ MPH (which is mainly why I need a luxury car), the road noise is much, much worse than my '15 E350! Unfortunately, I have Hyperacusis, a sensitivity to high-pitched noise, so I'm now using my Bose noise reduction headphones. I was determined to buy this car out at the end of the lease, but now I may go back to Lexus...

  2. Isaiah Bogan 2025-11-03

This is my first luxury car and I'm not sure if this feature is available anywhere, but I would really appreciate it. I've noticed that when the climate control is set to auto, it tends to direct most of the airflow to the defrost setting and only a little to the floor. It would be fantastic if I could program the auto temperature control to distribute the air according to my preferences.

  3. Kamren Johnson 2025-10-29

I'm not sure why some reviewers compare this to an Azera or talk smack about Korean cars. The Genesis can definitely keep pace with Mercedes and BMWs. I've owned two Mercedes E430 and SLK in the past, but now I can truly enjoy a luxury car and keep $10 to $20k in my wallet. Additionally, the Genesis comes with a 5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 10-year powertrain warranty, along with a bunch of awards. Unfortunately, there are way too many uneducated consumers out there who enjoy wasting their cash in the wind.

  4. Adolph Stokes 2025-10-25

After test driving a used certified low mileage Audi A6 Premium Plus and a BMW 535i XDrive, both priced at $47K, I was feeling pretty dejected. I couldn't justify paying $72K for a properly optioned new car. However, I stumbled upon the 2018 G80 Sport which I bought new for $55.1K. It has every option I could dream up, including adaptive cruise, all known forms of safety technology, AWD, and a killer audio system. Plus, it has plenty of other options that are extra charges on the German machines. One might ask: what good are any of these things if the car isn't a pleasure to be in and drive? Well, the G80 Sport rides and handles most like the BMW 535i XDrive, which is to say it is not a sports car but a very useful and pleasant hybrid cross between sport and luxury. It is very quiet inside, even at highway speeds. Handling is quite competent and feels well planted. The ride is sufficiently isolated, but not out-of-touch or floaty. The cabin is wonderfully laid out and comfortable. Controls have a satisfying tactile feel and are well placed. The infotainment and nav systems are works of art. They are incredibly logical, aesthetically pleasing, comprehensive, and also include the Lexicon audio system which is the best I've ever listened to in a car (Harman Kardon, JBL, Bose, Mark Levinson, B&O, etc.). Am I happy? You bet! Watch out BMW and Audi. If you are *only* looking for one of these nameplates, you might be missing out on the G80 Sport.

  5. Frederik Bernhard 2025-10-03

I absolutely love my 2020 G80! When my 2018 G80 lease was up, it was a no-brainer for me to stick with the Genesis brand. My love for Genesis started back in 2012 with the prior generation, when it was still under the Hyundai nameplate. I then leased the current generation Genesis in 2015 (still under Hyundai nameplate), and 2018 marked my first under its own division. The G80 is simply unbeatable in its price category, offering so much more than any other vehicle. I've always had the 3.8 V6 and never once felt like I needed more power. The ultra-quiet cabin and exceptional seat comfort make every drive a pleasure. Plus, the Genesis valet service is the icing on the cake! I never have to return to the dealer for any reason, as the valet service is simple through the Genesis app on my smartphone. My car is picked up at my place of employment, a loaner is dropped off, and then returned when service is completed (nicely detailed, I might add). I always choose the convenience option package up from the base model, which gives me everything from smart cruise to lane departure to 3D view cameras to aid in parking. It also includes heated seats front and back, as well as air-conditioned front seats. The upgraded Lexicon sound system is among the best I've experienced in a vehicle. My combined MPG (mostly city than highway) is always around 21 mpg. Although I really hoped the GV80 SUV would be available when my lease was up, I'll look forward to that in the next 30 months while I enjoy my 4 Genesis vehicles.
