Common Genesis G80 problems

The Genesis G80 is a popular luxury midsize car, but it has not been known for its overall reliability and consistency, especially compared to other midsize cars. Despite these improvements, there are still common problems reported by Genesis G80 owners.

One common issue is broken brake pads, which can be dangerous and costly to repair. Brake pads are a crucial component of a car's braking system, and when they wear down or break, it can affect the vehicle's ability to stop effectively. This can lead to accidents and costly repairs.

Another common problem is broken spark plugs, which can cause a variety of issues, including reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and difficulty starting the car. Spark plugs are responsible for igniting the fuel in the engine, and when they fail, it can cause significant problems with the car's performance.

Transmission problems are also a common issue with the Genesis G80, with some owners reporting issues with shifting, slipping, and jerking. Transmission problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low fluid levels, worn-out gears, and faulty sensors. These issues can be costly to repair, and in some cases, may require a complete transmission replacement.

Stressing failures are another problem reported by Genesis G80 owners, although the specifics of this issue are not detailed in the search results. It is possible that stressing failures could refer to issues with the car's electrical system, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn-out wiring, blown fuses, and faulty sensors.

Forward collision-avoidance problems are also a concern for Genesis G80 owners, with some reporting issues with the car's collision-avoidance system. This system is designed to alert drivers to potential collisions and, in some cases, apply the brakes automatically to prevent or mitigate the impact. When it fails, it can increase the risk of accidents and collisions.

In addition to these common problems, some Genesis G80 owners have reported issues with the car's side mirrors, which may not actuate for reverse or collapse when locked. This can be a frustrating issue, especially for those who use the mirrors to park in tight spaces.

Another issue reported by some Genesis G80 owners is a battery that goes dead if the car is not started daily. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty battery, a problem with the car's electrical system, or a lack of use.

In conclusion, while the Genesis G80 has improved in reliability in recent years, there are still common problems reported by owners. These issues include broken brake pads, broken spark plugs, transmission problems, stressing failures, forward collision-avoidance problems, issues with the car's side mirrors, and a battery that goes dead if the car is not started daily. It is essential to be aware of these potential issues when purchasing a used Genesis G80 and to ensure that any necessary repairs are made promptly to avoid more significant problems down the line.

In manual mode, the headlights will be constantly on bright and will not allow the lights to dim. I took the car to the dealership and they confirmed what I was describing and said that the multifunction switch is faulty. I had a prior year Hyundai that has the same type of switch and was having the same issues reported. A TSB was issued for that vehicle to have the multifunction switch replaced. Seeing as how these vehicles are the same exact vehicles (just under a different brand name) and are having the same issues, I'm wondering if the Genesis should be covered under the same bulletin.

  • Summary: Genesis issued the recall in mid-February and there is still not a remedy. We are supposed to park our auto outside and not in the garage. As we live in Florida and it is very hot and it is hurricane season, it is intolerably hot to park outside and, in the event of a hurricane or thunderstorm with hail, we cannot park outside without risking damage to our auto. It has been nearly five months since the recall which should be sufficient time for Genesis to have a solution to the problem. Also, they are not offering any compensation for the additional hardship due to having to park outside such as having to wash the car more frequently. I will also be contacting my congressman to followup with your agency.

Latest negative Genesis G80 car reviews

  1. Thurman Green 2025-08-05

    Vehicle year: 2017

The vehicle has experienced multiple issues despite previous repairs, resulting in a significant reduction in mileage. Despite being under warranty, the dealership has refused to take it back. However, the warranty has been extended to 100,000 miles. I am currently exploring options to address this issue, including seeking a ruling on the possibility of a lemon law claim.

  2. Rowan Kohler 2025-07-23

    Vehicle year: 2023

I purchased a new 2021 black Genesis G80 in February 2021. I put a very small amount of mileage on vehicle as at the mid-November I have 5200 miles. I had an issue while driving on the highway at 65 MPH and the emergency braking came on, locked the steering wheel and started to swerve on its own. I immediately took it into the local Genesis dealer where I had purchased and, they kept it for 5 days and stated they could not replicate the issue. I took it on vacation 300 miles and it worked fine on the way to our destination, but on the way back the incident happened 2 more times. I called the dealership and they asked that I bring it in again. I did and now 3 days later, they state the can not replicate the issue and have to go to Genesis engineering to ask if more cases of this. I have also service the vehicle at 3750 miles. The offer of service when purchased was they would drive you a loaner and pick up the car from you for service. So far no one has been available to pick up the car or bring a loaner. Actually no loaner has ever been available. I am awaiting to see if it can be fixed, if not I will be applying under the lemon law as the car is unsafe for driving. All the cases I was driving roughly 65 MPH, going straight and not close to another car. Very poor overall service. I have had a few sonatas and they have all been fine and this is my second Genesis and I am very disappointed.

  3. Quinn Prohaska 2025-07-23

    Vehicle year: 2018

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2018 g80 sport with AWD. Unfortunately, my dealer closed about 6 months after I bought the car and there isn't another one within 60 miles. While I have valet pick up service, the nearest service dealer only has Hyundai's as loaners and they don't know how to service the G80. I had an issue with my tire pressure light after an oil change and the tech didn't know the correct tire pressure. I've also been waiting over 4 weeks to hear back from Genesis regarding these issues. I think the service is not up to par with other middle class sedans, let alone Mercedes or BMW. Thank you for listening to my experience.

  4. Dexter Stamm 2025-06-26

    Vehicle year: 2019

I previously owned a 2015 G80 before upgrading to the 2018 model, but I must say I prefer my older car. The noise level in this luxury car is quite high, with noticeable road and undercarriage noise. Despite bringing it to the dealer's attention and even changing the tires to Michelin at my own expense, the noise level remains higher than my previous car. However, I do appreciate the other features of the car. As an 80-year-old, this will likely be my last car purchase.

    Vehicle year: 2018

I've been the proud owner of a 2018 G80 3.3T (AWD) for over three years now, and I must say it's been an absolute pleasure to own and drive. The acceleration is smooth and impressive, and the interior is both beautiful and comfortable. The climate control is consistent no matter how hot or cold it is outside, and the sound system is spectacular, including surround sound. I must say, I'm still impressed at how much car it is for the money, and the reliability has been stellar. It's truly luxury without breaking the bank. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase!

I am 83 and this is my third Genesis, the Sport model. For you young guys, she will do 60 in 4.5 seconds. My only complaint is the gas usage, it should be better. By the way, my wife likes the vehicle too. Best regards, Hoss B.

The 2018 Genesis G80 I purchased used with 25k miles on it has unfortunately presented some challenges. Despite being originally sold in Canada, I expected to receive the remainder of the warranty, but was disappointed to learn that this was not the case. Additionally, due to the car's 3G configuration, I have been unable to utilize any of the remote features, which has been frustrating. Despite encountering difficulties in finding assistance from both US and Canadian sources, I remain confident in my ability to find a solution to these issues.

I recently purchased the 3.3 turbo (Sport) version of this car, after leasing the 3.8 AWD for 3 years. I must say, it satisfies most of my wants from the 3.8L, with much better handling and great acceleration. Despite being 50 years old, I feel like the younger target audience for this car, as opposed to the 3.8L which seems to attract an older crowd. Although the mpg is a major downside, this car is well-built, well-thought-through, and excellent to drive. As someone who commutes over an hour each way to work, I need some isolation, comfort, and a little joy on my drive, which I get daily in the G80 sport. The Audio system by Lexicon is top-notch, and combined with the noise-isolated cabin, my drive is as relaxing as can be. I also want to clarify that there is an auto trunk shut button, contrary to what the previous poster said! Although I am currently leasing this car, I am definitely planning on buying it at the end of my lease.
