2020 Genesis G70 problems

The Genesis G70 (Korean: 제네시스 G70) is a four-door compact executive car manufactured by the Korean luxury automaker Genesis, a luxury division of Hyundai Motor Group.

The G70 debuted on September 15, 2017, at a global launch event in Seoul's Olympic Park. It is Genesis Motor's third model and was designed to compete with compact executive and entry-level luxury saloons and sedans. The Genesis G70 was named the 2019 North American Car of the Year.

Overview

The Genesis G70 was under development for several years and was previewed by the Genesis New York Concept and shown at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The design was drafted by German auto designer Peter Schreyer, who is also responsible for designing the related Kia Stinger. Development of the G70 took place at Hyundai Namyang R&D Center in Hwaseong, South Korea.

The exterior design shares cues from the other two Genesis models, the G80 and the G90. The grille features Genesis' corporate design, with functional air intakes along the bottom and side. The LED headlights operate with separate daytime running lights. The rear has an athletic stance, framed by LED taillights and dual exhausts.

The interior's center console is constructed out of soft-touch plastics, leather & genuine metal accents that are slightly angled toward the driver. The layout has three large knobs for the climate controls, an eight-inch touch screen, and a small electronic shifter. The interior appointments on the G70 include quilted leather seating surfaces, along with brushed aluminum and stainless steel trim.

Common 2020 Genesis G70 problems

The 2020 Genesis G70 has been praised for its performance and luxury features, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported. One issue is related to the suspension system. A G70 owner reported hitting a pothole, which resulted in the passenger side strut shattering into pieces. This suggests that the suspension system of the 2020 G70 may not be as robust as expected, particularly when encountering road imperfections.

Another issue that has been reported is poor quality paint and clear coat that doesn't hold up, causing chipping. This may be a concern for potential buyers who value the appearance of their vehicle, as paint chipping can lead to a less desirable aesthetic over time.

Additionally, there have been reports of poor fitment, both inside and outside the vehicle, causing creaking noises and excessive panel gaps. This can not only affect the appearance of the car but also potentially lead to issues down the road, as gaps might let in debris or moisture.

Furthermore, dealership experience has been identified as an area for improvement, with some owners expressing dissatisfaction with the service they received. This can impact the overall ownership experience, making it more challenging to deal with issues or concerns that may arise.

Lastly, fuel economy has been reported as lower than the EPA estimated, although not by a significant amount. This may be a consideration for potential buyers who are focused on fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

In summary, the 2020 Genesis G70 has some common problems that owners have reported, including suspension issues, poor paint quality, fitment problems, dealership experience, and fuel economy. These issues, while not necessarily deal-breakers, should be taken into account when considering the purchase of a 2020 Genesis G70.

Atlantic Tire (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), the sole distributor and service center of Michelin in Puerto Rico, informed me that approximately 30 other Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims regarding the front tires with severe "chunking". They informed me not to drive the vehicle until the tires are replaced.
2022-07-19

WHEELS,TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-14
  • VIN: kmtg54le3lu
  • Components: WHEELS,TIRES
  • Summary: On or about May 2022, and after on 8,000 miles driven, noticed severe "chunking", or tread peeling, on both front tires of my 2020 Genesis G70 purchased October 2020 from Genesis Puerto Rico, located at Plaza Las Americas, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tread on both tires was coming apart to the point where you could see the metal underneath the treads. Driving this vehicle at high speeds without noticing the defect could have resulted in a blown tire and a potentially serious accident. By the time I noticed the issue, it was already at a relatively severe state, thus the onset of the symptoms is unknown, however likely sometime 2021. I took the car to the dealership. They referred me to a third party tire distributor (Atlantic Tires, Bayamon, Puerto Rico). This third party distributor indicated that approximately 30 different Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims with the same severe chunking on both front tires. They believe all the tires in that lot purchased for the Genesis G70's have the same manufacturer's defect. The third party tire distributor confirmed this to be a defect of the tire advised me not to drive the vehicle anymore until replacing the tires. This is in San Juan, Puerto Rico, there is only one Genesis dealership on the whole island, thus all the G70's with the defect were sold from that one location. The dealership has also been aware of the defect and has neglected to inform the potentially affected customers and/or report this safety defect to the NHTSA. My girlfriend primarily drives the vehicle and she would never have noticed the tire damage. The tires in question are Michelin tires, however, Michelin does not have formal representation in Puerto Rico and Atlantic Tire serves as their distributor in Puerto Rico.

Negative 2020 Genesis G70 car reviews

  1. Grover Schimmel 2024-11-24

The fuel pump on my 2019 G70 failed with less than 70,000 miles on it.

  2. Herminio Wunsch 2024-11-05

I experienced several issues with the engine, including stalling on the road and a strong gasoline smell. Despite my efforts to resolve these problems, they persisted and ultimately led me to terminate my lease contract after 36 months and pay the $4,000 penalty. While my experience may have been unfortunate, I have decided not to purchase a Genesis vehicle again.

  3. Justyn Erdman 2024-05-22

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the Genesis G70. I found that the resale price dropped quite a bit, which was a bit disappointing. When I decided to sell, I was offered $34K for my car, which was originally purchased for $49K. While I was a bit disappointed with this, I still enjoyed my time with the car. I did have some issues with customer service, but overall I had a decent experience. Just wanted to share my thoughts with you all before making a decision. Thanks for listening!

  4. Malachi Hodkiewicz 2024-03-29

Exterior is looking great! The engine is running smoothly and has good pick-up. However, the interior seems to have cheap plastic everywhere and it gives off a bit of a Hyundai vibe.

  5. Marty Kuhn 2024-02-26

I leased this car based on the fabulous reviews. However, my experience has been less than ideal. I have had to make multiple trips to the dealership and have faced issues with parts being unavailable for up to 8 months. Additionally, I felt misled by the dealership from the point of purchase to aftersales service. Unfortunately, I have had ongoing issues with the car almost every month, including trim discoloration, sunroof replacement, seat belts not retracting, the car going from drive into neutral, and difficulty shifting from park to reverse. The Voice Command module in the car takes a while to connect, and the GPS often gives directions after a turn has been missed. The gas mileage is not great, and the car lacks pick-up. While there is no back seat to speak of, the back seats do fully fold down, allowing passengers to lay down in the back. Lastly, the hood doesn't latch evenly on both sides. I hope these issues can be resolved soon.

Positive 2020 Genesis G70 car reviews

  1. Kayley Zboncak 2025-03-28

As a former owner of both a BMW 540 with M package and a BMW 435 with M package, I can confidently say that my Genesi G70 3.3 prestige package lease is a steal at $140/month less than my previous BMW 4 series, saving me 5k over 36 months. The Genesis offers more features than the BMW, with thoughtful additions such as brake hold and passenger seat controls on both sides. The fuel economy is on par with a turbo 3.3L engine, and the handling and steering are strong points, although the tires can be a weak spot when driving aggressively. While the engine can be a bit coarse sounding at higher revs, the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist work smoothly, making highway driving a breeze. As a daily driver for sport enthusiasts, I highly recommend this car. The concierge service is excellent, with pick-up and loaner services available when needed. In fact, two months after leasing the car, Genesis even sent me a carry-on Travel Pro suitcase as a surprise gift! In comparison, BMW and Porsche offered nothing more than a T-shirt. After 18,000 miles, my review still stands as written, with zero reliability issues or recalls. The interior is holding up well with no signs of wear, and the highway mileage is impressive at 28 mpg at a steady 75-80mph, especially considering the car's over 300 hp. Overall, I highly recommend the Genesis G70 3.3 prestige package for its impressive features, reliability, and concierge service.

  2. Crawford Waelchi 2025-03-26

I can only think of three negative aspects to owning this car. Firstly, the infotainment screen rattles a little bit. Secondly, the dealer customer service is absolutely terrible. And thirdly, reportedly poor resale value. However, I must say that I am particularly impressed with the interior. Most everything sounds - and feels - locked down tight to minimize rattle sounds. The only exception is an occasional (and subtle) rattle that comes from the infotainment screen when you accelerate from 0 mph. Although I hate rattles in a car cabin, this is very subtle and I can live with it. About the rest of the car, it is exceptional! I’ve had the 2.0T Advanced (base trim) since November 2019 and the car continues to drive and handle fantastically. The 4-cyl engine delivers plenty of power and gets you to desired highway speeds very quickly. I have no complaints about the rest of the car and, I admit the complaint about the infotainment screen rattle is a very small detail. Regarding the dealer service, it is important to keep in mind that it’s a Hyundai dealer. You (and your car) will be attended to by the same staff that tends to tons of Hyundai’s with MSRP’s that are half that (or less than half) of your Genesis. There are downsides to this. My experiences with two local “Genesis” dealers (Roswell, GA and Duluth, GA Hyundai dealerships) have been very slow response times to your inquiries (if you even get a response at all) and a lack of knowledge about the car itself by the service departments. However, it is worth noting that Genesis’ call center is very knowledgeable and will help you obtain whatever you need (in my case, they forwarded my complaints to the dealership itself and forced them to do better). You may face some challenges on the customer service side while owning this car, but it is worth it. Lastly, some people on the internet have expressed concerns about the resale value. While there might be some truth to this, since it’s a new brand, I believe that the exceptional driving experience and features of this car make it a worthwhile investment. For anyone wondering, I own the car (not leasing), but I hope to sell it or trade it in for the new g80 in the future. Overall, it's an excellent car and I have no regrets here.

  3. Grant Little 2025-03-25

This car is not very fuel efficient, but don't let that discourage you. Once you get past that, you'll really enjoy it. The 3.3 ltr twin turbo engine is capable of supplying the necessary power at low levels, or answering the call when you ask it to (you'll be hitting triple digits before you know it). Overall, it's a really great ride!

  4. Amos Frami 2025-03-12

I have been driving a BMW 128i Manual for the last 9 years, which has been a really fun little car. However, I needed something more convenient since I am dropping my kids at school every day. I wanted more power and some modern features without compromising on the driving dynamics I loved with my BMW. Since the beginning that the G70 (and the Stinger) were announced, I read everything about it and wanted to verify if it was as good as the hype from the reviews. Spoiler alert: it IS! The G70's handling is actually better than my beloved 128i's, the power and the delivery of the 3.3t engine is great, and at the same time, the car is plush and all the features are very well designed. It is still a driver's car. I must mention the gorgeous light grey interior with the Prestige trim, which is stunning and the cabin feels like a special place to spend time during my commute. The Lexicon sound system is brilliant. As others mentioned, the main downside is the rear legroom, which is tight but still useable. The only negative, in my opinion, is the buying experience since the Genesis network is not ready for prime time and not used to the needs of luxury car buyers. I could not find my exact configuration in my area, and the local dealers did not try to help me. I ended up purchasing one out of state and had it shipped from across the country.**** Update after a year of ownership (9,000 miles): Still very happy, the car is still a joy to drive. The materials are holding up well (I have the light grey interior, which is almost white, and there is no discoloration on the seats from jeans, and the soft nappy leather does not crease so far). The only issue is a creaking noise in the steering column (which sounds like a damaged clockspring) that the dealer does not seem to be able to fix (took the car twice). Not a big deal but nagging.***** Update after 3 years of ownership (28k miles): I still enjoy daily driving the G70.I had to remove a star due to some nagging issues and my overall ownership experience. Although my local dealer has made some progress with their service department, they have not been able to correct the issue with my steering creak. They even replaced the steering column, which helped for a few months before the issue returned. I have noticed a few creaking noises, but nothing too dramatic. So far, the interior is holding up well, but I tend to be very careful. After three years, I no longer enjoy the valet service, and paying $300 per year for the sub-par connected services is a tough pill to swallow, given the poor technology. However, I did renew the remote start and emergency calls, but I gave up on the connected nav that I never use.

  5. Leone Hoppe 2025-03-11

It's not, but they did steal that company's chief designer so... coincidence? Anyways, bring your ego. The uninformed only see the winged badge and won't leave you alone. Bicyclists make rude hand gestures, strangers ask you how much money you make, and coworkers insist that the Siberian Ice Blue paint is in fact white and/or grey (it’s blue, fight me). However, in between all of them, it's surprising just how many people know the car and its accolades. Newcomer sport sedans always get glowing reviews and awards, even if they’re junk, but a five-minute test drive reveals that the G70 is actually competitive in its own right. The interior is as beautiful in person as in pictures. It’s a tactile wonderland, with soft leather and machined aluminum in places you would never look. The optional V6 is also a firecracker, with 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, AWD, and launch control, though so that was no surprise. What floored me was the NVH. Nothing creaks and nothing rattles, but somehow that doesn’t make it feel like a boat. A 3,800lb sedan has no right to corner like this and STILL have this nice of a ride! It does though, and for that reason, I’d skip the sport trim unless you’re going to the track. The standard springs are plenty stiff for on-road shenanigans. In this vein, I disagree with saying there’s no point in choosing the base G70 over a top-trim midsize sedan because it’s no faster. I traded up from a six-cylinder Legacy and, despite it being just as fast as the four-pot G70, the Genesis is a superior machine in every single way. Less is true of its underdog sports sedan competitors though. I WANTED to like the Cadillac and the Alfa Romeo, especially here in the sea of German luxury cars called New York, but come test-drive time the Genesis danced circles around them. It drives better, looks better, and has the best ownership perks by a mile. If you want a sports sedan that’s good AND different, this is really the only one you can have. Only a few problems:Bad mileage and a tiny tank mean lots of fuel stops. If you're over 6'3, you'll have to lose the sunroof or your head won't fit. Yes, they are sold at Hyundai stores, but if that means Genesis can sell them as cheap as they do, so be it. Overall, this G70 has turned into my dream-come-true car. I hope to keep it for the duration of the ten-year warranty or longer!
