The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-17
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: BELOW IS A COPY OF CORRESPONDENCE I SENT TO FORD ON OCT. 17, 2006 REGARDING MY CONCERN WITH THE LACK OF REAR SEAT HEAD RESTRAINTS IN MY 2001 FORD F150 SUPERCREW. HELLO, I PURCHASED A NEW 2001 F150 SUPERCREW IN JUNE 2000. I HAVE A CONCERN WITH THE LACK OF HEADRESTS IN THE REAR SEAT. I DID NOT NOTICE THE LACK OF HEADRESTS WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. THEN MY GRANDFATHER SUBSEQUENTLY PURCHASED A NEW SUPERCREW A YEAR OR SO LATER. THEN, WHEN COMPARING THE TWO TRUCKS I NOTICED THAT HIS TRUCK CAME WITH REAR HEAD RESTS. THE PROXIMITY OF THE REAR WINDOW TO REAR PASSENGERS HEADS IS ALARMING SHOULD THIS VEHICLE BE INVOLVED IN A FRONT OR REAR COLLISION. THIS DESIGN FLAW COULD RESULT IN SEVERE HEAD TRAUMA SHOULD SOMEONE''S HEAD IMPACT THE REAR GLASS IN SUCH AN ACCIDENT. SECONDARILY, REAR PASSENGER COMFORT IS COMPROMISED AS THERE IS NO HEAD SUPPORT. AS MY TWO SONS ARE NOW GETTING BEYOND CHILD SEATS, IT HAS BECOME VERY EVIDENT TO ME THAT THE REAR SEAT IS PERHAPS AS UNSAFE FOR A CHILD (AS WELL AS AN ADULT) AS THE FRONT SEAT (WHICH HAS A FRONT AIRBAG THAT I CANNOT TURN OFF). I SUSPECT THAT THIS OVERSIGHT WAS EVIDENT BEFORE THE MODEL WAS FIRST RELEASED IN 2000 AND WAS QUICKLY CORRECTED AS THE RUN BEGAN. WHILE I AM PURSUING PUTTING THE RESPONSIBILITY ON FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR CORRECTING THIS ISSUE ON VEHICLES THAT WERE SOLD WITHOUT REAR HEADRESTS AND THE DEALER THAT SOLD THE VEHICLE, I MUST IN THE MEAN TIME SEEK OUT A SOLUTION TO ENSURE MY VEHICLE HAS A BASIC LEVEL OF PASSENGER SAFETY. I AM ASKING FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE IN IDENTIFYING ANY AFTER MARKET, RETROFIT OR ADD ON HEADREST THAT WOULD PROPERLY AND SAFELY AFFIX TO THE REAR SEAT BACK IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO A FACTOR HEADREST. I WILL AWAIT A TIMELY AND THOROUGH RESPONSE. SINCERELY, MICHAEL PETERSON 244 SKOPAS COURT ROSEVILLE, CA 95661 916-768-4951 [email protected]. *NM

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-10-07
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 FORD F-150 SUPERCREW ON OCT 7 2005. I HAD FINISHED COMING THROUGH A SHARP 180 DEGREE TURN GOING APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MILES AN HOUR. WHEN I STRAIGHTENED THE STEERING WHEEL THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TRUCK STOPPED IN ABOUT 100 FEET. WHEN I GOT OUT I NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE INNER TIE ROD HAD BROKEN FREE FROM THE TRUCKS STEERING ROD AND WAS HANGING DOWN. I DID NOT WRECK THE VEHICLE, BUT WAS SHAKEN UP AS I HAD MY 4 MONTH OLD AND 3 YR OLD IN THE TRUCK WITH ME. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT FORD HAD ISSUED A "LETTER OF INSPECTION" THAT I HAD NOT RECEIVED REGARDING THIS ISSUE WITH THE TIE RODS. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED AT A COST OF $80 AND I HAVE TO REPLACE THE TIE ROD, BUT SINCE ONE FAILED, I AM REPLACING ALL THE TIE ROD COMPONENTS, THE COST IS $164 FOR PARTS. I FEEL THAT FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS VEHICLE IN ORDER TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. HAD I BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY, TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WE WOULD HAVE ROLLED THE VEHICLE AND POSSIBLY BEEN KILLED, PLEASE HELP. LT DAN D'AURORA US NAVY NURSE CORPS. *NM

FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD TO PUT THE FLAMES OUT BEFORE THE TRUCK EXPLODED. THE TRUCK WAS LOCATED NEXT TO IN-LAWS HOME AND VEHICLES. THIS WAS REPORTED TO FORD COMPANY AND INSURANCE. WITHIN THE NEXT 2 DAYS, A NATIONWIDE RECALL WAS SENT OUT THAT INCLUDED MY TRUCK. MY TRUCK HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN THE PAST YEAR AND I WAS TOLD IT DID NOT FIT INTO THIS RECALL AT THE GIVEN TIME. FIRE INVESTIGATOR FOR INSURANCE HAS IDENTIFIED THE CRUISE CONTROL AS THE PROBLEM. I DID NOT HAVE ANY INTENTIONS OF SELLING OR TRADING THIS VEHICLE AND KEPT IT IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-09
  • VIN: 1FTRW08L71K
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: WITHOUT WARNING, ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH AND SOUNDED LIKE AN EXHAUST LEAK. ENGINE WAS STOPPED AND RESTARTED. SOUND GOT MUCH LOUDER WITH A BANG OR CLUNK UNDER THE HOOD. TRUCK WAS STOPPED AT THAT POINT AND TOWED TO FORD DEALER. THEY REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO BE A "SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT" OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE ONLY REPAIR THAT THEY RECOMMENDED WAS CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT, $2700 AND ONE WEEKS TIME. A QUICK LOOK AT THE INTERNET, PLACING THE WORDS "SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT" IN YAHOO SEARCH REVEALED HUNDREDS OF INSTANCES OF PLUGS BLOWING OUT OF FORD 5.4 AND V10 TRITON ENGINE, MOST REQUIRED CYLINDER REPLACEMENT. IT IS REPORTED THAT FORD WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF THIS CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN FLAW REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE. I BELIEVE FORD SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO COVER ALL OR PART OF THE COST OF THIS REPAIR, AS IT IS NOT A RESULT OF IMPROPER OPERATION AR MAINTENEANCE BUT IS OBVIOUSLY A CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN FLAW.
