2022 Ford Ranger problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Negative 2022 Ford Ranger car reviews

I have owned several Rangers in the past and they have always met my needs. However, this time I ordered a Lariat with all the trimmings and was disappointed to find that Ford had removed the LED lighting without any discussion or alternatives provided. If you have trouble seeing at night, I recommend replacing the factory halogens. While there were many other features dropped from the Lariat, I still find the performance to be adequate and it seems like it can handle towing. The steering is tight, although a bit noisy, and the cabin tech is fine but could be more user-friendly. I do think the tires could be better, and I hope Ford will consider using BF Goodrich or Cooper instead of Hankook. Overall, I would say it's an average truck. I did want the Tremor, but unfortunately, it's not available in the SCab model, so I bought the Tremor suspension and swapped it out. I also paid for the option that included the B&O stereo, but unfortunately, it's only available in the Crew model. Despite these setbacks, I still think the Ranger is a good choice for those in the market for a midsize truck.

The electric 10-speed transmission was a major issue for me. It would shift at inappropriate times, causing the vehicle to rev up and then jump into third gear. This resulted in two dangerous situations when I was entering traffic. Despite the dealer's attempts to repair the issue, the recommended fix did not resolve the problem. As an owner of both a 1988 Ranger XLT and a 2020 XLT V6, I can say that I miss both of them. Unfortunately, the cabin of the 2022 Ranger is quite awkward, with nothing easily accessible from the driver's seat. However, I was able to work out a satisfactory arrangement with the dealer, who I believe is a great company. Given Ford's past issues with the Focus and Fiesta transmissions, one would expect them to ensure that all their vehicles have a flawless powertrain.

undefinedMy experience with Ford, their dealers and their product has been disappointing. However, I am confident that my future purchases will be with a more reliable and trustworthy brand. While I have met some quality people who empathize with these issues, the lack of action and accountability from Ford has been frustrating. It is important to me to deal with an organization that I can trust with my hard earned money. My wife recently purchased a beautiful, fuel efficient Subaru and had a great buying experience. I urge Ford to prioritize excellence and accountability to regain the trust of their customers. Despite attempts to get warranty repairs done at two separate local dealers, my issues have not been corrected at this time. I hope that Ford will take the necessary steps to address these problems and improve their customer service in the future.

The truck had some challenges. Firstly, getting in the truck was obstructed by the front pillar, making it difficult to enter. Secondly, the truck's throttle response had a delay, which impacted braking and reaction timing. It's no wonder that when I picked up the truck, it was marked by the rental agency with a ding on the front bumper. The center console seemed like an afterthought, fitting into the leftover space of the design. The visibility was poor, especially for taller individuals. The truck had little feel for the road when steering, which could be acceptable for those with weaker arms or hands, but I felt like I was being disallowed to make the decision. Back-up visibility was terrible, making steering a total nuisance. Although the truck felt sturdy and strong, the overall awkwardness was a bit of a hardship. It seems like the truck was designed for more petite folks looking for the strength of a 1/2 ton truck.

  5. Demond Grimes 2024-10-26

Ford's quality has taken a hit. However, I am confident that the issues I experienced with my truck are not representative of the brand as a whole. The scratches on the dash and floor console, as well as the easily scratched door panels, were disappointing. Additionally, the brakes did not meet my expectations. As a lifelong Ford owner, I was disappointed with this experience. I trust that Ford will take the necessary steps to address these issues and improve their quality control.

Positive 2022 Ford Ranger car reviews

  1. Shad Brown 2025-10-18

I love this Ranger! It's super comfortable, has a great ride, and has all the features I need in a truck. Plus, it looks awesome!

  2. Augustus Bartoletti 2025-10-13

You're going to love this truck! I recently purchased the 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat Tremor edition in Rapid Red and it has exceeded my expectations. Despite being classified as a compact truck, it is far from small and the Tremor package makes it even beefier. The upgraded shocks and rear springs, along with the 32 inch Grabber Tires, make for a smooth ride both on and off the road. Plus, the larger tires look great! I was a bit nervous about the stated mpg of 19/19, but I've been getting around 20 mpg with equal interstate/city driving. While it would be nice to get better mpg, the Tremor package provides some improvements that make for a better driving experience overall. Even with the larger tires, there is minimal road noise. The Ranger also holds the road nicely and I haven't experienced any rear end hopping that can be common in other trucks. As someone who is 6'1 and 245lbs, I was pleased to find that there is plenty of room in the truck and the seats are extremely comfortable. My wife, who drives a Lexus Rx 350, even prefers the seats in the Ranger! The safety features on the Ranger are top-notch and were a major factor in my decision to choose it over other trucks like the Tacoma/Canyon/Colorado. It has Lane-Keeping System, BLIS® (Blind-Spot Information System), Rear View Camera, Pre-Collison Assist with Emergency Braking (AEB), Auto High-Beam Headlamps, and adaptive cruise control. It also has some great off-road driver assist technologies. While I do wish it had an option for a heads up display, it wasn't a deal breaker. Overall, I highly recommend the Ford Ranger Lariat Tremor edition!I'm not an audiophile, but the B&O 10 speaker system was a big selling point for me. It sounds best in Surround mode and has great bass. While I can't compare it to the stock stereo, I do feel like it's better than some other premium systems I've had, including Bose, Harmon Kardon, and Mark Levinson. I do miss having a CD player, but that's just me showing my age! I had doubts about the Sync4 system, but all the features, from navigation to audio, work easily using voice recognition. I haven't used Apple CarPlay, so I can't speak to its ease of use. I will say that I haven't been impressed with the apps available for the system. The factory sprayed-in liner looks and functions great, but I do have a complaint: overspray ended up in the threaded holes where you add accessories like additional tie downs or, in my case, a tonneau cover. Do yourself a favor and ask the dealer to clean those up before bringing it home. If you're deciding whether the Tremor package - available on the XLT and Lariat trims - is worth it, in my opinion, it was worth every penny. The pros are tougher looks, improved off-road capability, and improved ride and handling on pavement. The cons are that it costs more, reduces payload capacity, and has lower mpg. As for Lariat vs XLT, that's really a personal preference. It's worth it if you like some of the nicer options, but the XLT will perform just as well and save you some money. My truck obviously has all the bells and whistles that many may not want to pay for or need, but if you're comparing it to a loaded competitor such as a Canyon Denali, etc., I don't think you'll find that the others measure up in terms of price, options, and capability.

  3. Bo Willms 2025-10-10

Fuel mileage Est: 21 city, 26 hwy. However, I have been able to achieve an average of 23.5 mpg to 24 mpg in the city and 29 mpg to 31 mpg on the highway, which is impressive. It's hard to believe that it's only a 4 cylinder with plenty of power, and there are a lot of options available even with just the XL package.

  4. Dejuan Schultz 2025-10-06

The 2021 Ford Ranger is an excellent truck! It has a peppy engine and great looks. Although the dealership was not willing to negotiate due to the microchip shortage, I still got a good price on the truck. Additionally, I received 42,000 Ford points with my purchase, which equates to $220, and was able to get a great deal on the bedliner. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and have not seen a better deal at any other dealership or online.

  5. Armando Quigley 2025-10-01

I've been the proud owner of my 2022 Ranger XLT for about 4 months now. Before that, I had a 2015 F150 Platinum. I must say, I absolutely love my Ranger! However, there are a few things that could use some improvement. For instance, there's a slight vibration at low speeds when accelerating (which I believe is due to the pinion needing to be shimmed). Additionally, the HVAC fan is quite loud on high, making it difficult to carry on a conversation. Lastly, I think it would be great if they included the bed bulkhead rail so that a tonneau cover could be mounted, as it's currently 1
