The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2004 Ford F-250 sd problems

The 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty (SD) is a popular heavy-duty pickup truck known for its power and versatility. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the top three issues found in the 2004 Ford F-250 SD, along with their details:

  1. Engine Troubles: Engine problems were the most common issue reported by owners of the 2004 Ford F-250 SD. The engine proved to be particularly difficult in the 2004 model, with specific troubles including:
    • EGR Failure: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is designed to reduce harmful emissions by recirculating a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine cylinders. However, in the 2004 Ford F-250 SD, the EGR system was prone to failure, leading to increased emissions and reduced engine performance.
    • Stalling Engine While Driving: Several owners reported that their vehicles would suddenly stall while driving, which can be a significant safety concern. This issue was often attributed to faulty sensors or electrical problems within the engine management system.
    • Sudden Loss of Power: Another common complaint was a sudden loss of power while driving, often accompanied by the check engine light illuminating. This issue could be caused by various factors, including faulty fuel injectors, clogged fuel filters, or issues with the engine control module (ECM).
  2. Suspension Issues: Suspension problems were the second most common issue reported by 2004 Ford F-250 SD owners. These issues can lead to an inability to control the vehicle and may require expensive repairs. The most prominent suspension issues included:
    • Death Wobble: This term refers to a violent shaking of the vehicle, often occurring at high speeds. The death wobble is caused by a combination of factors, including tire imbalance, worn suspension components, and improper steering geometry.
    • Hyper Shaking: Some owners reported excessive shaking and vibration in the steering wheel, often accompanied by a rough ride. This issue was typically attributed to worn or damaged suspension components, such as bushings, tie rods, or ball joints.
    • Shaking and Loss of Control: In some cases, the shaking and vibration could lead to a complete loss of control, making the vehicle difficult to steer and potentially dangerous to drive.
  3. Steering Difficulties: Steering problems were the third most common issue reported by 2004 Ford F-250 SD owners. These issues were often related to the suspension problems mentioned above and could include:
    • Wobbles When Steering: Some owners reported a wobbling sensation when steering, particularly at high speeds. This issue was often attributed to tire imbalance, worn suspension components, or issues with the steering system itself.
    • Locking Up the Steering Wheel: In some cases, the steering wheel could lock up, making it difficult or impossible to steer the vehicle. This issue was often caused by problems with the power steering system, such as a low fluid level or a faulty pump.

While these issues are common in the 2004 Ford F-250 SD, it is essential to note that not all vehicles will experience these problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address potential issues before they become significant concerns.

ROAD CONDITIONS WERE NORMAL, NO ROUGH ROAD, POTHOLES AND NO ITEMS IN ROADWAY. WE WERE TRAVELING ON A RURAL, TWO LANE ROAD WITH NO SIDE SHOULDERS(JUST TREES) WHEN OUR LEFT REAR TIRE STARTED VIBRATING AND MAKING A STRANGE NOISE. BEFORE WE HAD TIME TO SLOW DOWN, WE HEARD LOUD BANGING AND CRUNCHING. SEEING AS THERE WAS NO PLACE TO PULL OVER, WE HAD TO STOP AND INVESTIGATE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE. WHAT WE SAW WAS A STILL FULLY INFLATED TIRE, WITH THE TREAD TORN OFF AND FLAPPING. THIS COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE BED AND WHO KNOWS POSSIBLY WHAT ELSE OF OUR TRUCK. THE TIRES HAVE GOOD TREAD LIFE, WERE INFLATED TO THE MANUFACTURER SUGGESTED PRESSURE AND WERE NOT DRY ROTTED OR WORN UNEVENLY. WE HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED AN HOUR BACK HOME BECAUSE OF THE CONDITION. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO THE MANUFACTURER AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET ANYWHERE WITH THEM. THIS IS NOT A FLUKE, SEEING AS I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING ON HERE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT INJURED OR EVEN KILLED. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-03
  • VIN: 1FTNW21P94E
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: "FICM & ICP RECALL" RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM FORD JULY 2005 IN REGARDS TO FAULTY FICM AND ICP. THE FICM WAS REPAIRED AUGUST 2005 BY A FORD DEALERSHIP. NOTE, WE DID NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH THE TRUCK PRIOR TO THE FIX. JANUARY 2006 WE HAD TO TAKE THE TRUCK INTO THE SHOP DUE TO THE ENGINE RUNNING ROUGH WHILE IDLING AND ACCELING; THE FICM WAS REPLACED DUE TO A SHORT; THE ISSUE THAT WAS JUST FIXED ON THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 5 TIMES SINCE JANUARY 2006 AND HAS COST US OVER $11,000 OUT OF POCKET TO TRY AND RESOLVE THIS ISSUE THAT STARTED AFTER THE INITIAL RECALL FIX. WE HAVE CONTACTED FORD HDQRS AND THEY ADVISED TO TAKE THE TRUCK INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WE DID MULTIPLE TIMES. OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS THE SURGING HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY WORSE. WHILE TRAVELING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON I5 PULLING A 30' 5TH WHEEL TRAILER, THE TRUCK SURGED FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY JUST MISSING THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION, WHEN I BEGAN TO TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE TO MOVE FORWARD THE TRUCK SURGED FORWARD 3 FEET. I WAS LUCKY THERE WASN'T ANOTHER CAR CLOSE OR A PERSON IN THE STREET. JUST THE OTHER DAY I WAS PARALLEL PARKING AND WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS TO BACK UP A LITTLE THE TRUCK SURGED BACKWARD ALMOST HITTING THE CAR IN BACK OF THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK ALSO STALLS JUST BEFORE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP OCCASIONALLY. THIS ISSUE HAS BECOME EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN THAT I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THE TRUCK. I LOOKED INTO THE CALIFORNIA LEMON LAW AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE TRUCK MIGHT BE COVERED UNDER THIS. WE NEED TO GET RID OF THIS TRUCK BUT FEEL FORD DOES NOT STANDS BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. I HAVE ATTACHED THE RECALL NOTICE AND SOME OF THE RECEIPTS FOR THE REPAIRS DONE TO THE TRUCK JUST IN REGARDS TO THIS SURGING ISSUE. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO ATTACH 5 DOCUMENTS BUT HAVE MANY MORE IF NEEDED. THIS CAUSED THE TRUCK TO GO INTO THE ON COMING TRAFFIC AND I WAS JUST ABLE TO GET CONTROL OF THE TRUCK AND GET IT OFF THE ROAD.BF GOODICH CLAIM THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THIS TIRE BUT I HAVE DISCOVERED WHY THEY SAY THAT. THIS SIZE OF TIRE USUALLY IS PURCHASED FOR JEEPS AND SMALL PICKUP WEIGHING 3000 TO 4000 POUNDS BUT IS RATED FOR E LOAD WHEN YOU USED THE TIRE ON A LIGHTER VEHICLE IT DOES NOT HEAT UP BUT MY PICKUP IS 9000 LBS. BEFORE THIS LAST TRIP I HAD COSTCO CHECK THE TIRES AND AIR PRESSURE THE DAY BEFORE THE TRIP AND I CHECKED THEM ON THE DAY OF THE TRIP. SO I KNOW THEY WERE AIR TO THE REQUIRED PRESSURE. I BELIEVE THE TIRE MUST BE RECALLED AND LOAD RATED NO HIGH THAN C

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-25
  • VIN: 1FTNW21P54E
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY , COMPLETE LOSS OF THROTTLE BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING AT A LOW AMPERAGE. WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND TURNED IT OFF. IT WOULDN'T START BACK UP RIGHT AWAY. HAD TO WAIT A WHILE IT WOULD START AND LIMPED IT HOME. NO PROBLEMS FOR A FEW DAYS, THEN IT STARTED ACTING UP AGAIN. A COUPLE TIMES IT WOULD START, BUT AT A LOW IDLE WITH NO RESPONSE OF THE GAS PEDDLE. THE FINAL STRAW WAS LAST WEEK. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY TO WORK. EACH TIME I CAME TO A STOP, IT WOULD LOSE THROTTLE. I WAS ABLE TO TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON TO GET GOING. THEN AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION OF HWY 41 AND 145, IT WOULDN'T TURN BACK ON AND I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HWY. I HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND IT WOULD TURN BUT NOT START. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC ON SATURDAY AND MONDAY WHEN THEY GOT TO IT, AFTER CHARGING THE BATTERIES, IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND THEY HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET IT TO FAIL...WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THERE IS NO OIL PRESSURE ON THE GAUGE. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS OR DEADLY. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN INJURED OR KILLED IF I HAD BEEN HIT.

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-27
  • VIN: 1FTNX20L54E
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY AFTER HITTING A ROUGH SPOT ON PAVEMENT AT HIGHWAY SPEED. CONTINUES UNTIL SPEED IS REDUCED TO LESS THAN 50 MPH. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ON YOUR DATABASE FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, SO WHY ISN'T SOMETHING BEING DONE ABOUT IT? THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. MY WIFE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HANDLE THIS HAPPENING TO HER. THIS HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND I HAD THE TRUCK CHECKED, BUT NOTHING COULD BE FOUND. EVEN THOUGH IT'S TEN YEARS OLD, TRUCK ONLY HAS A LITTLE OVER 24,000 MILES. *TR
