2023 Ford Escape problems

ford logo

The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.

The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).

Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2023 Ford Escape problems

The 2023 Ford Escape has been subject to several issues and recalls, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Ford Motor Company. These problems range from engine failures, fuel injector leaks, and instrument panel failures.

  • Instrument Panel Failure:
Another recall was issued for the 2023 Ford Escape due to the instrument panel failing to display critical information, such as the speedometer or warning lights. This issue is caused by the module not being properly soldered, which results in the instrument panel not meeting the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101. This failure increases the risk of a crash, as drivers cannot see important safety information.
  • Engine Failure and Fire Risk:
Ford also recalled certain 2020-2023 Escape, 2022-2023 Maverick, and 2021-2023 Corsair vehicles equipped with 2.5L HEV or PHEV engines due to the risk of an engine compartment fire. In the event of an engine failure, engine oil and fuel vapor can accumulate near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components, potentially causing a fire. Owners are advised to park and shut off the engine as quickly as possible if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power, or see smoke.

These issues, while significant, have not resulted in a final conclusion regarding the overall reliability of the 2023 Ford Escape. However, it is important for owners to be aware of these problems and have their vehicles inspected and repaired as necessary to ensure their safety.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
  • VIN: 1FMCU9JZXPU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: This vehicle is on the shop having it's 3rd 12 volt battery (4th overall if you count the factory battery) installed since I bought it in July 2023. There have been multiple instances of the car refusing to start and actually had to be towed to the dealer on one occasion. The only warning that you get when it is becoming an issue is that the vehicle shows going into deep sleep mode in the Ford Pass app. The batteries seem to last about 6 months on average. I do not have copies of all the service records with me at this time but can provide if needed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • VIN: 1FMCU9MN7PU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving home to Aspen, CO from Denver. I was about 44 miles from my home, on the other side of an 11,000 ft mountain pass. As I was passing another vehicle, the car died. The dashboard light said "engine coolant over temperature". The car died as I was pulling back into the right lane. The person behind me swerved around me. I had to have the car towed to a dealer that is 2 1/2 hours from my home. It's been sitting at the Ford Dealership in Salida, CO for 9 days. They keep telling me they will get it in to diagnose the problem but every day it's the same story and they do nothing. After doing online research, that make, model and year vehicle engine issue has been reported by many owners. There was no warning about this issue. It simply died while driving on the highway.

STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • VIN: 1FMCU9GN5PU
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: I've had this thing less than 6 months, I've already had the engine rebuilt with 34 parts a month and a half in and the drivers side rear door handle replaced during this time because it would not open from the outside and only the inside despite being unlocked. All of this occurred at the beginning of May 2024 and it sat for 3 months due to the engine being basically rebuilt with most parts being on backorder. Today the same door is having the same issue, only this time the same exact door won't open neither from the inside or outside, which is a huge safety hazard in my eyes if I got into an accident and had passengers in the backseat. I do have video proof of this too.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-18
  • VIN: 1FMCU9MN7PU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Within a block of my wife pulling out of our apartment complex onto a 55mph highway to travel to work in the morning, the vehicle had several lights on the cluster illuminate and indicated that it was overheating and went into limp mode. She was able to move to the shoulder and call me. The amount of traffic on this highway and the speed in which she lost power made this a very unsafe event. The check engine light had come on and the vehicle indicated maximum engine temperature, service engine soon light illuminated as well as powertrain fault. The vehicle was towed to the selling Ford Dealer and the condition was confirmed and the vehicle still indicated high temp even after sitting overnight. It was diagnosed from a service bulletin as having a faulty head that had manufacturing debris in it which was released into the coolant system and blocked the coolant temperature sensor. Warranty covered parts have been ordered with some being on Backorder. The vehicle is still in the shop awaiting parts and we have been provided a loaner. We have only owned the vehicle three months and 1500 miles when this occurred. Ford declined a buyback request on the vehicle and offered no remedy except warranty repair.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
  • VIN: 1FMCU9JZ2PU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My vehicle incorrectly read highway number signs as though they were speed limit signs. This occurred eight times on state highway [XXX] in Florida; and once on state highway [XXX]. The speed limit was actually 55 mph on highway [XXX]. If I would have had “Predictive Speed Assist” turned on, and was using adaptive cruise control, it would have automatically decelerated to 40, +/- whatever “tolerance” I had set. What would happen if this occurs on highway 80, or highway 100? Acceleration to 100 mph, and possibly to 120 mph if I had the tolerance set to +20? This error, which happened while I was a passenger, could significantly exacerbate problem #1. See details in the attached 5 page pdf. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
  • VIN: 1FMCU9JA4PU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: On 1/29/24, I drove around town to run errands and on my second stop, I tried starting the car and it would not start, but it went into "accessory mode". I received SEVERAL warnings: Pedestrian Sounder, Memory Recall Failure, Front Collision Sensors, Tractions Control, Check Engine Light, etc. It also stated it would sound an alarm if we tried turning it on again. I sat there for 10 mins and tried turning it on after getting in and out of the car, looking underneath to see if oil or gas was leaking, which nothing was leaking. I kept trying to start the vehicle with no success, still getting the warnings. My spouse arrived after 15 mins and when she opened the hood and wiggled some cables around, we were able to start the car up and it was like it went through a factory reset as the memory for the driver seat went really close to the steering wheel. We called roadside assistance thinking we need to get this towed to a dealership but cancelled it after seeing it would start and my spouse driving it around the grocery parking lot carefully. When we got it to the dealership, it wasn't having those issues and they couldn't do much for it. On 2/10/24, the check engine light came on. We took it to the dealership on 2/12/24 and they told us the PCM malfunctioned. They did a software update on the PCM, which the dealership said has fixed the problem for now. Just worried this is going to happen again and will happen when I'm in a place where maybe my spouse can't come or we are traveling long distance. Prior to this incident, the dash (MPH, Gas level, Oil level, Engine Temp) of the vehicle, which is entirely digital, flickers like there is a short in the wiring somewhere. It doesn't happen every time we drive it, just sometimes (maybe 35% of the time). This was happening shortly after purchasing the vehicle in July 2023. I have a feeling that something relating to the electrical components, battery, chip/software/firmware in the Ford Escape needs to be replaced entirely.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 1FMCU9NZXPU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The incident is that my car continuously enters "Deep Sleep" or "Battery Saver" mode, even immediately after very long drives. This has been recurring since June 2023, and has resulted in one battery replacement at 6 weeks after the car was received (temporarily remediated the issue for about 6 weeks). This has not caused an accident or injury, but does call into question vehicle reliability (e.g., will it start?). I have taken the car in to attempt repairs multiple times to no avail.

Negative 2023 Ford Escape car reviews

  1. Ike Purdy 2024-10-21

During our trip to LA, we rented a car which unfortunately did not meet our expectations. The car had uncomfortable seats, leaky doors while driving on the highway, and a transmission that barely shifted up or down. Additionally, the gas pedal and brake were not designed properly, causing discomfort and inconvenience during our drive. These issues made our journey less enjoyable than we had hoped.

  2. Zachery Nader 2024-10-05

You have an ST line, which is a stylish and sporty vehicle with decent power. While there are some areas for improvement, such as the laggy infotainment system and the small and oddly placed buttons on the steering wheel, it's not a deal breaker. The automatic lift gate can be unresponsive at times, but the heated steering wheel is a favorite feature. However, the heat seems to be concentrated on the outer side and not evenly distributed. The interior quality could be improved, as the leather seats are already wrinkling after just 500 miles. The steering can feel strange on the highway, with a slight delay from your movements. The engine vibrates at idle, which can be felt throughout the vehicle. Overall, while it may not be worth the current price tag of 35k, it's still a decent car with potential. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it!

  3. Jace Bins 2024-09-06

This SUV is quite powerful with 250hp in a small vehicle, but unfortunately, the lights are too bright. The signals light up entire intersections, reflecting every flash off all traffic light frames and signs. Even when there are 20 cars around, my car's lights are so bright that they stand out. When driving or facing other vehicles in intersections, people often flash their high beams at me, mistaking my lights for high beams. I flash mine back to show them that my high beams are not on. It can be embarrassing to drive this car at night, and if I had test driven it at night, I wouldn't have bought it.

Although the initial expectations were high, this vehicle has proven to be unreliable in certain conditions. It is recommended to have a tow plan in case of encountering more than 1 inch of snow, sand or mud. The sand mode is ineffective in deep snow. Additionally, the transmission has hard shifts and the rear end screeches when wet or cold on reverse. At 37,000 miles, the original tires are down to 1/32 even with regular tire rotations, which is consistent with another co-worker's experience with the same year and model. Unfortunately, their Escape has been shutting off randomly while driving. Despite these issues, the seats are comfortable.

I have had friends who owned Escapes in the past and they really enjoyed them. So, when I rented one for a long weekend and knew I would be doing a lot of driving, I was excited to see how it would perform. However, it turned out to be just average. There was nothing particularly good or bad about it. The plastic quality was a mix of good and bad, and while most controls were well laid out, some of the controls that were not frequently used were hidden under multiple layers of menus, which took a long time to find. The ride and handling were just okay for a small SUV. The ride was good on smooth surfaces but lost its composure over big bumps. It was not floaty like some cars without handling packages, but there was too much lean for handling, which did not give me much confidence. The performance and acceleration were mixed. It was generally pretty good, but when merging or passing, it did not want to downshift enough and struggled to do it, even with the larger engine. The road, wind, and engine noise were okay, never too loud but always slightly annoying. The base stereo was just that, a basic version that is okay if you just want something playing but not something you really listen to. Hopefully, the upgraded version is better. The back seat was pretty good, but the cargo area was disappointing. Fortunately, I did not need to test the brakes in an emergency, but in normal usage, they were fine. For a 4-wheel drive vehicle, the gas mileage was pretty good, just over 30 over 500 miles of combined highway and city driving. All in all, it was a lot better than the RAV4 that I had rented a couple of months earlier, but not nearly as good as my own 2016 Golf Sportwagen.

Positive 2023 Ford Escape car reviews

Hi there! We recently test drove an Escape Hybrid and found it to be quite peppy and responsive. However, we did notice a few things that concerned us. Firstly, we felt that driving it would require too much attention to be relaxing on a long trip. Additionally, we found the close proximity of the brake and gas pedals to be a bit worrying, as well as the brake pedal being too high in relation to the gas pedal. These factors could potentially be dangerous in an emergency situation. Lastly, we were a bit concerned that it did not receive a Top Safety Pick rating. Thanks for considering our feedback!

I'm driving the Escape SEL AWD. Although there's too much plastic in the interior, I agree with the majority that the ride is smooth and the mileage is great, getting as low as 5.4 litres per 100 km. The AWD is fantastic in snow or icy roads. One minor setback is the noise level of the Atkinson engine. Perhaps better sound isolation from the motor compartment and the cabin could improve this car. Overall, it's a great value for your money. After 18 months and almost 20,000 miles, this car runs like brand new!

I found the vehicle to be very easy to operate. Danny Park, my salesman, was incredibly helpful and patient with me whenever I had any questions or needed assistance.

It drives smoothly and has a solid feel. It feels really good on the highway and I'm getting an average of 38-40 miles per gallon. I get even more if I'm driving around town.

Oct 4, 2023 ... Yup. 1.5l 4 cylinders would leak coolant into the engine. This has a 1.5l 3 cylinder. More reliable but still sucks and gutless for power.
