The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (colloquially referred to as the CVPI, P71, or P7B) is a four-door, body-on-frame sedan that was manufactured by Ford from 1992 to 2011. It is the police car version of the Ford Crown Victoria and was the first vehicle to use the Ford Police Interceptor name.

From 1997 to 2013, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was the most widely used automobile in law enforcement fleets in North America, namely the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was also used for this purpose on a more limited scale in other regions, such as Europe and the Middle East.

History

After the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Caprice, the Ford Motor Company held a near-monopoly on the market for police vehicles in the United States and Canada for over a decade. The conventional rear-wheel drive, V8 power, and body-on-frame construction were considered advantageous for police use. The body-on-frame construction allowed inexpensive repairs after collisions without the need to straighten the chassis. Rear-wheel drive was deemed better for hard maneuvers and more robust than the front-wheel-drive competition for rough driving over curbs and other obstacles in the urban environment.

Although CVPIs were not sold directly to the general public by the manufacturer, they were widely available in North America as used vehicles after being decommissioned. The cars were in demand by taxi companies and others who wanted a safe, durable, and/or inexpensive car, and those who needed a car with a large back seat.

The CVPI came equipped with many heavy-duty parts, such as a revised transmission, and a 186 kW (253 PS; 249 hp) engine. Used versions are normally stripped of any police decals, equipment, police radios, and emergency lights before being sold or auctioned to the public.

Common 1999 Ford Cvpi problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are common problems with the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI) from 1999 based on complaints from owners:

  1. Fuel Tank Filling Issues:
Owners have reported difficulties in filling the fuel tank completely. This issue can be caused by problems with the vent hoses and valve in the trunk area. Cleaning the vent valve from carbon and dirt buildup can help resolve this issue.
  2. Intake Manifold Failure:
A common problem reported by owners is the failure of the intake manifold. This issue can be costly to repair, often requiring extensive work on the engine. Symptoms of a failing intake manifold include rough idling, engine misfires, and coolant leaks.
  3. AC Vacuum Hose Problems:
Another frequent issue is related to the AC vacuum hoses. Over time, these hoses can fray, crack, or develop leaks, leading to air conditioning problems. When the vacuum hoses are damaged, the air may not flow correctly through the vents, affecting the cooling system's efficiency.
  4. Transmission Failure:
Owners have experienced transmission failures in the Ford CVPI. This is a significant and costly issue that can lead to complete transmission breakdown. Signs of transmission problems include slipping gears, delayed shifting, and unusual noises during gear changes.

These common problems with the Ford CVPI 1999 can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall reliability. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-09-23
  • VIN: 2FAFP71W0XX
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY MY 1999 FORD CROWN VICTORIA WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AS IF SOMEONE HIT MY TRUNK WITH A HAMMER. I PULLED INTO A CONCRETE DRIVE WAY THAT BELONGED TO A GROCERY WAREHOUSE SO I COULD TURN AROUND AND GO BACK TO MY WORK. I DROVE BACK TO MY WORK ABOUT ONE QUARTER MILE FROM WHERE I HEARD THE NOISE. WHILE ENROUTE BACK TO MY WORK I HEARD SCRAPING NOISES SEVERAL TIMES. UPON ARRIVAL TO MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE FOR PROBLEMS AND FOUND THAT THE GASOLINE TANK HAD FALLEN OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE I HAVE HAD FOR OVER 2 YEARS AND HAS NOT BEEN WRECKED AND I AM METICULOUS ABOUT SERVICING THE VEHICLE AT THE FORD RECOMMENDED INTERVALS. AT THE TIME THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AND FOR ALL OF THE TIME I HAVE HAD VEHICLE PRIOR TO INCIDENT NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD OR ABUSED. THIS VEHICLE IS BARELY 9 YEARS OLD. THE FUEL TANK IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ITEM. A FUEL TANK AND COMPONENT RELATED TO THE FUEL TANK RETENTION TO THE VEHICLES UNDERSIDE SHOULD NOT BE FALLING OUT. I HAVE NOT YET REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. NOT ONLY DOES THE TANK NEED TO BE REFASTENED BUT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO OBVIOUSLY SCRAPING THE ASPHALT ROAD SURFACE MULTIPLE TIMES AND CAUSING THE TANK TO LEAK NOW. I HAVE PURCHASED USED A FUEL TANK AND ALL HARDWARE REQUIRED FOR RE-INSTALLATION FOR $110 AND FORD QUOTED $192.50 IN LABOR TO INSTALL. THAT PRICE IS ONLY A QUOTE AND I DO NOT KNOW IF THERE IS ANY OTHER DAMAGE TO COMPONENTS CONNECTED TO THE TANK SUCH AS FUEL LINES, FUEL PUMP BUT NOT LIMITED TO JUST THOSE ITEMS. *TR
