Kia Optima 2013 problems
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima 2013 problems
The Kia Optima, a midsize sedan, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, including engine problems, starter issues, faulty door latch assemblies, faulty throttle position switches (TPS), and weak alternators.
Engine problems are a significant issue for the Kia Optima, with many owners reporting severe manufacturing and failure issues, causing premature bearing wear and tear. This can lead to uncontrollable engine seizing, increasing the risk of accidents. In 2017, Kia issued a recall to repair or replace affected Optima engines for free.
Starter problems are also prevalent in the Kia Optima, with many owners reporting that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no warning signs. While diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause, several owners have resolved the issue by replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.
Faulty door latch assemblies are another common problem in the Kia Optima, making it difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. Replacing the worn latch assembly is typically enough to solve the problem.
Faulty throttle position switches (TPS) can also be an issue in the Kia Optima, causing the check engine light to illuminate, combined with misfiring and power loss. This issue tends to occur just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone, but Kia has taken steps to improve the necessary parts, which tends to resolve this issue.
Weak alternators are also a common problem in the Kia Optima, with the car having insufficient battery charging capability when operating with high electrical loads, such as running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time. This issue can make it difficult to start the vehicle. Kia has released a new alternator that owners can purchase and install to resolve this problem.
In summary, the Kia Optima has several common problems, including engine problems, starter issues, faulty door latch assemblies, faulty throttle position switches, and weak alternators. While these issues can be frustrating for owners, Kia has taken steps to address some of these problems, such as issuing recalls and improving necessary parts.

- Summary: In May 2024, I took my 2013 Kia Optima (2.0L T-GDI) to my local dealership to have several recalls completed, including SC284QF (Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit). The dealership completed the recalls and I have a receipt showing all three recalls were completed. On Sep 12 2024 I received a recall notice stating the recall SC284QF had NOT been completed and to contact my dealership to schedule this recall repair. I looked up the Kia Safety Recall Campain instruction, detailing the repair step-by-step. I then went to my vehicle fuse panel (where the recall repair was to be performed) and was able to verify the recall has NOT been completed, despite the Kia dealership claiming (and documenting) the recall as being complete. This recall states that the risk of not competing this recall is potential engine fire while being driven or parked. I park this vehicle inside my garage (attached to my house) and this could have caused a fire which could have endangered the lives of my family. I have attached the Kia Safety Recall Campain instructions as well as a photo of the affected fuse.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
- VIN: 5XXGR4A66DG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX] @ approx. 9:30pm while driving south on [XXX] between Pullman, WA and Lewiston, ID. my 2013 Kia Optima SXL turn off with warning, the engine turned off and never started again. no lights, smoke, smells or leaks. there were no noises of any kind come from the car, nothing to alert me there was a problem. at the time there was no music playing. My daughter was sleeping so the only noise was the car, if there were any noises from the engine they were not muffled by conversation or music. I called my wife who came up and I tried to jump it, thinking perhaps the alternator failed. Due to the location, we were not able to fully exit the highway, the car was a half tire width over the white line. This is a rural location not an elevated interstate, as such traffic though moving fast was not bumper to bumper. Next day I drove up and pushed the car about 100yards behind where it was, on the opposite side of the road. Then called a roll back to haul the car to a local shop. They were able to best guess the diagnosis as a seized engine. as the engine was not turning over, and manually turning the crank was not possible. I trailered it to my house, removed the serp. belt and was able to very slightly turn the crank with a 2.5ft long breaker bar. it is currently in my garage. Oil was changed recently; it was not low. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5XXGR4A63DG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On 7/31, we had the HECU Fuse recall fixed at the Federico Kia Dealership. In 8/1, one day later, when driving the vehicle all of the car emergency lights came on, the engine started smoking and eventually caught fire. Fire department and police were called. Vehicle was toed to Kia Dealership. The next morning 8/2 we spoke with the service manager at the dealership, who was no help and gave us a 1-800 number to call Kia directly. Since this fire directly pertains to the part they “fixed” the day before during the recall, we believe the dealership did not fix the issue and believe something they “fixed” caused the issue as we have never had any prior issues with the engine.

- Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kia Forte, Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Kia Optima and 2011-2012 Kia Optima Hybrid and Sedona vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying.
- Consequence: If the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
- Remedy: Kia will notify owners. For model year 2011 Sedona vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to verify the ACU part number and, if necessary, install an extension wire harness kit between the ACU Connector and the Vehicle Harness Connector. For all other affected vehicles, Kia will instruct dealers to install the extension wire harness kit. The recall began September 28, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. I was searching for a Mercedes with all the features I wanted, but couldn't find one that fit my budget. However, I came across a beautiful Infiniti that I really liked, even though it didn't have all the bells and whistles of a Kia Optima, such as rear seat warmers and a panoramic sunroof. The Infiniti was also at least 3 years older and only had a partial warranty. After looking at the Optima, I realized that it was the perfect choice for me. It had all the amenities I was looking for and was reasonably priced compared to other vehicles I had considered. I'm really happy with my decision because the Optima handles well, looks great, and looks even better with tinted windows.

This car really delivers! It does everything that it says it will do, and does it well. The power is quick and responsive, making the car incredibly fun to drive. I've been thoroughly impressed with the features offered inside the cabin as well. As someone who has only owned Japanese cars in the past, I never would have pictured myself in a Korean car. However, the quality and fit of this car have completely won me over. I can't recommend it highly enough! Additionally, Kia has been excellent with all the maintenance and follow-up, exceeding my expectations.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Kia Optima. After test driving the Scion TC and Honda Accord, I found the Optima to be the best option. The car offers great features at an affordable price, which really impressed me. I've been driving it for 7 months now and have already put 11,000 miles on it, and I still love it! I know some people have mentioned that they don't get great gas mileage, but I've found that on country roads I get about 30mpg, in the city I still get a good 27mpg, and on the highway I usually average 35mpg. I haven't had any problems with the car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing and gorgeous looking sedan with a low price tag. Let me know if you have any questions!

After months of researching every car on the internet, taking test drives, and checking out pricing, I found that the Optima SXL was the absolute best car for me. It gave me exactly what I was looking for: nice power, decent gas mileage, attractive outside packaging, a lot of extra features, and an easy-to-use touch screen. I test drove a BMW 3 series, an Audi A4, a Mazda 6, and a Honda Accord, but none had the perfect blend like the Optima. The Mazda lacked horsepower, the Accord lacked styling in the back, the BMW was nice but too expensive with basic features, and the closest was the Audi which drove nice but the tech and styling were a bit dated. The Optima SXL is great and I highly recommend it!

I compared the BMW 328, MB 300, Audi A4, and Infiniti G37x to the KIA SX, and I must say that the Optima SX had more options and better performance. Not only that, but the Optima is a gorgeous car. The exterior styling and paint finish are incredible, and the interior materials are of excellent quality. The navigation and radio respond very quickly, and both front and rear seats are heated. I have been driving the car for a month now, and I absolutely love how it handles and drives. The SX turbo flies with almost 274HP, making it a great choice for those who love speed. This is actually my third KIA, and I must say that they have been extremely dependable. In my opinion, there is nothing on the market that offers the same value as a KIA. This is not the KIA of the past, and I believe that Toyota and Honda should take note. I traded out of an M35x for the SX, and I am glad I did. The M35x was very expensive to maintain, costing almost $12k a year.

I purchased this car as a college graduation gift for my son. While driving it from the Midwest to the West Coast to begin his new job, the engine light came on and it now needs to be serviced for three days. As a brand new car, this should not have happened. It is a significant inconvenience to have to get the car serviced in a new city while starting a new job. I believe that we should have purchased a different vehicle.

Before buying this vehicle, I owned a Chevy Silverado. So, naturally, downgrading to a fuel-efficient, economical car was very appealing. The car we bought had all the bells and whistles - leather, navigation, double sunroof, hybrid, everything - fully loaded. Not knowing a lot about cars, I thought this would be great for my 10-year-old daughter and me. As a busy military mom, I was planning on starting school full-time. However, within 2 years of ownership, I've had a few issues with the car. Despite having to replace one tire, wheel bearing and cross bar, dead battery, and all four tires, I still believe that this car is a good choice for those who are environmentally conscious. Recently, I experienced a hybrid system shut down in the middle of a highway, which was quite scary. However, the dealership service department was able to fix the issue, and I am now back on the road. While I understand that hybrid cars may not be for everyone, I would still recommend this car to those who are looking for a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly option.

Bought used in 2015. 18 months later, the engine seized up while driving. Kia replaced with a refurbished engine. One year later, the refurbished engine seized up while driving. Kia replaced again with another refurbished engine. There have been too many recalls on this vehicle to count. I have had to replace headlight bulbs at least a half dozen times since purchase. I am extremely disappointed in this car.

I really wanted this car and it was a hit with people who stopped me in parking lots and at the car wash. They admired the car and asked lots of questions, which made me feel like a car salesman! Although, after owning it for a little over 3 years, I don't feel the same level of excitement. On the positive side, the car has a beautiful design and I love the heated steering wheel/seats and the cooling seats. The glove box feature is also a great addition as it can keep a bottle of water cold. I'm very happy with my leather seats and the sound system. However, the car does not live up to the MPG claims and I typically end a tank of gas with about 21 mpg. Although, I have gotten up to 29 on the highway but not as often. Despite being a good driver and very conscious of the mileage, I have noticed that the car has a few cons. For instance, I am 5'4

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2013 Kia Optima. Unfortunately, I had to replace the engine this month after only 10,000 miles and less than 6 months of ownership. I took it to a couple of dealerships, but they were unable to diagnose the issue. Thankfully, I found a dealer who was able to identify the problem and recommended a new engine. Despite this setback, I still love driving my Kia Optima on the weekends - it's such a great looking car! However, I do think that customer service could be improved to better assist customers in situations like mine. Take care!
