The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.

Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.

Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 3C63RRML7LG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Reoccurring messages regarding DEF, Exhaust Regeneration, and DPF, causing more and more frequent ReGen for longer and longer. Numerous trips to various Ram dealerships resulting in codes being cleared and then being told it was a software issue. After 2 years of this intermittently happening, we experienced an extended Regen that lasted hours and did not clear out the error code. Ram dealer in Utah charged $280 to do a stationary regeneration and once again clear out codes. Less than 6 months later with more and more Regens, a failed regen sent truck into Low Power Mode (losing the ability to tow or excelerate quickly). We ended up having to take it to a Ram dealer over 2 hours away in S. Atlanta to have them take it apart and tell us that the factory installed wiring harness rubbed a hole in the charged air cooler boot which was then causing failed regeneration of the diesel particulates causing the filter to fill. Dealer clearly stated that had any other dealer done a visual inspection of the physical components they would have seen this occurring. We filed a claim and opened a case with Ram for the $4500 repair and waited 8 days with no response to 9 phone calls. The same day we authorized the work, we receive the coveted return call to start the process, but once the customer service rep found out we had already authorized the work we were advised that case would be closed and we would have to open another case for reimbursement. So we started the whole process again, submitted all of the documentation and paid receipts and have been denied. All attempts to contact a supervisor or manager go nowhere and Ram customer service is rude and unhelpful and went as far as to tell us that our mistake was having the vehicle repaired (as if we are just going to let an $80k vehicle sit indefinitely in an unusable state).

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
  • VIN: 3C63RRJL4LG
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I live in northern California near San Francisco, and we were traveling from Cottonwood, AZ back to our home. Back in June of 2023 we were traveling near Kingman, AZ and had the front passenger tire explode, almost losing control of the truck and trailer. We were at 19524 miles on the truck. At the time I thought that maybe I had hit something. But two months later I took the trailer to Carson City, NV for work and just before I got into Reno the truck started to shake from side to side in the front and the next day I took it to a tire shop and they told me that the driver’s front tire was getting ready to come apart and I had only put about 800 miles on the truck since the first tire had exploded. This was when I realized the issue was the tires. I immediately had all 6 tires replaced. You can find a lot of bad comments about these tires on-line with comments like what happened to me. EXAMPLE [XXX] In response to your questions 1.I don’t have the tires that died just pictures. 2.After the blowout steering was difficult. 3.No Dealer confirmation. 4.No inspections. 5.Before the first tire exploded for about 20 miles I noticed a vibration in the front end. But just thought it was just the road. Tire Size - LT235/80R17 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-22
  • VIN: 3C63R3GL3LG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Vehicle will not go into park and shut off. I could not turn the engine off. Not having the ability to turn the motor off is a safety concern. This has progressed to where it says vehicle is not in park while vehicle is in drive and moving. The problem is intermittent and I have documented it with multiple pictures and videos and witness accounts but the dealer has not been able to reproduce the malfunction. The service representative has been helpful but has not been able to. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or other independent representatives. The vehicle does not have any codes associated with it. This same exact series of malfuctions occurred on my 2016 Ram 2500 and the valve pack on the transmission failed and the vehicle would not move and eventually the transmission failed. Then the emission software would not extinguish the check engine light even though there were no issues. The dealer reinstalled the software and after less than 25 miles the same issue happened. I traded in the vehicle because Ram would not honor the warranty and I could not pass smog with a check engine light on and nothing wrong with the sensors or the output. Now I am having problems with the 3500 progressively going in the exact same way as the 2500. I have had to take it to the dealer 6 or 7 times in as many months and less than 10,000 miles.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 3C63RRGL5LG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Check engine light turned on in my 2020 dodge ram 3500, I took the truck back to the dealership. According to them the Grid Heater Relay needs to be replaced & the truck could have caught on fire if we would have kept driving like that. I have done some research and saw that there has been a recall on that same part for the 2021-2023. Could it be possible the 2020 were defective also, this is a major safety concern and should be looked into. I also don’t believe the customer should be responsible for paying for this issue to be fixed when it was my family’s safety that was jeopardized.

We immediately worked to control the fire using extinguishers and garden hoses until the fire department arrived a few minutes later. They worked to put the fire out that engulfed the engine compartment and then worked to get the hood open to finish putting the fire out. The fire didn’t fully go out until the battery cables were cut.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-15
  • VIN: 3C63RRLLXLG
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: While driving at 70 mph on I-75 July 1 2023, roads where dry, temp outside was 88 degrees, speed control set, my 2020 Ram 3500 diesel, 4X4 Mega cab pick-up began to shake violently, the steering wheel was trembling side to side ! I took the truck off cruise control and griped the steering wheel, traffic was heavy that day so it took about 1/4 mile to slow down and pull safely to the shoulder with the hazard lights on and the truck in park I got out and started looking at what was going on in the front of the truck! I didn't take long before I spotted a large egg shaped raised bump on the drivers side front tire! It was checked for air pressure before my trip and registered 80 PSI with a air gauge! I checked the passenger side tire and it was normal, ( No egg shape). I had the local tire shop remove the spare and swap it with the Drivers side lumpy tire. I had not even traveled 10 miles from the tire store when the steering wheel started to shake violently again, this time I took it right back to the tire store and thought that it might not have been balanced or threw a weight maybe, as the manager/ owner and I inspected the tire the drivers side was fine, we walked to the passenger side and we both saw a Hugh outward protruding bump on the center top of the tire running at an angle from front to back! He told me that it must be delaminating, that he couldn't be sure until he demounted it. I was out of spares, out of town and out of luck. I paid the man to mount 2 new Firestones and I would take it up with my dealer when they Opened on the following Monday! As I proceeded to Thayer Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep in Bowling Green Ohio, I felt the back of the passenger side of the truck begin to hop, the slower I drove the worse it became. Pulled into the dealer lot and left it running in park to cool the turbo down as I talked to the service manager, service manager asked to see the tires that where taken off, she saw the bubbles on the insides of both, told me to call NEXEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-30
  • VIN: 3C63R3RL9LG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving Down a paved roadway on 6/30/23 @ 5pm doing approximately 20 miles per hour the vehicle died and the dash lite up with every single message possible such as 4WD inactive, oil change due, fuel filter service required and etc. Attempted to restart the vehicle for about 25 minutes when another citizen noticed we were having issues with the vehicle so they stopped to assist us. The citizen towed my vehicle to location we were staying at for the weekend and upon arrival to the location I disconnected both battery terminals to allow the computer modules to drain/reset. After allowing the batteries to be disconnected for several hours I hooked them back up and tried starting the vehicle and was unsuccessful getting it to restart. I disconnected the batteries again for the night and returned the next morning to hook them up. after hooking the batteries back up, I was able to get the vehicle started and moved it around at the place we were staying at and allowed it remain running for about 20 minutes before I shut it off. Went and did other projects and about 5 hours later returned to the pickup to see to see if it would start since we were heading back the next morning and it started so I figured it would get us home on Sunday July 2nd. On July 2nd @ 11:30am started the pickup to leave and everything seemed normal. We drove about 5miles from the location we were staying at and were approaching an intersecting highway OR58. I proceeded out onto OR58 westbound and as we got about 1 mile down the road when the pickup died and every message was being displayed again. As we sat way off the shoulder of OR58 incident response pulled up behind us to make sure everything was ok. I told the incident responder that we were good and I was working on contacting RAM for a tow. About 15 minutes had passed and IR person walked away then the pickup started. I was able to drive the pickup about 2 more miles down the road when it died again and had to be towed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-13
  • VIN: 3C63R3EL1LG
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My check engine light went on, along with the DEF warning, early June 13th,2023. The DEF warning stated I had 150 miles to get the Track to a Dealer. After Dealer evaluation, I was told the truck had DEF contamination, from ,Diesel Fuel. I asked how this could happen? I was not given an explanation. To me this is a DEF Pump failure. The DEF Pump did not have enough PSI to inject DEF into the Diesel Fuel, so the Diesel Fuel back flowed into the DEF system. Additional facts, my Truck warranty expired 5/15/2023. My truck has less than 36,000 miles. I had the High Pressure Fuel pump, Recalled fixed in May 2023. I was told this repair did not lead to this issue. The Repair bill is over $3700 for this repair.

I was able to get it home and onto a car hauling trailer took it to a dealership and confirmed the high pressure fuel pump was the culprit they informed me that they would not perform the safety recall because of a modification to the vehicle which has no bearing on the safety issues at hand I contacted FCA they encouraged me to take it to a different dealership which I did. I had to pay a tow truck to haul it to another dealership in which they told me they would do the recall however when they put my VIN number in their system my pickup had been blacklisted by the parent company Chrysler saying do not work on this vehicle for safety recalls. I at this point got quotes to have it done and it was extremely expensive to friend advised me to look into the law so I contacted a lawyer and they told me to file a complaint with NHTSA.
