1996 Dodge Avenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.

The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.

Nameplate history

The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

Common 1996 Dodge Avenger problems

The Dodge Avenger, produced from 1995 to 2014, is known for its smooth ride quality and affordable price point. However, it has also been criticized for poor performance, interior refinement, and reliability issues. When it comes to the 1996 Dodge Avenger, there are several common problems that owners have reported:

  • Starting and stalling issues: Some 1996 Dodge Avenger owners have reported that their cars have starting problems, with the engine sometimes not getting enough gas to start.
  • Fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator location: One owner in the Edmunds Forums was looking for the location of the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, indicating that fuel-related issues might be a concern for some 1996 Avenger owners.
  • Transmission problems: The Dodge Avenger has been known for transmission issues, with the 2008 model year having the most overall complaints related to transmission problems.
  • Electrical issues: The 2011 Dodge Avenger has had complaints about the car's faulty electrical system, particularly with the air conditioning system not functioning properly. While the 1996 model year is not specifically mentioned in the search results, it is possible that electrical issues could also be a concern for this model.
  • Engine stalls and shutdowns: The 2008 Dodge Avenger had a significant issue with the engine stalling or shutting down while driving, which could pose a safety risk. While the 1996 model year is not specifically mentioned in this context, engine stalls and shutdowns are a known issue for the Avenger, so it is possible that 1996 owners could experience this problem as well.

When considering purchasing a used 1996 Dodge Avenger, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and consider potential repair costs and safety risks. It is also recommended to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, AIR PROBLEM

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
  • Summary: IN THE AM ON 9/15/03 ON THE FREEWAY TRAVELING ABOUT 65 MPH, LATERAL ARM BROKE OFF ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR, CAUSING THE LEFT TIRE TO PUSH UPWARDS INTO THE FENDER AND THE AXLE TO SNAP IN HALF. I HAD TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AT 40 MPH TO GET IT TO STOP SO I WOULD NOT HIT THE CONCRETE BARRIER OR THE I-5 SIGN. DODGE DID PAY FOR THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED, BUT NOT MORE THAN 2 WEEKS LATER THE CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A NOISE WHILE REVERSING AND WHILE GOING OVER BUMPS IN THE ROAD, THEY TOLD ME THIS IS THE BRAKES, BUT ANOTHER MECHANIC SAID THAT IT IS THE LATERAL ARM AGAIN. DODGE IS REFUSING TO PAY TO FIX IT AND WHEN I BROUGHT THEM THE CAR THEY DID NOT VISUALLY INSPECT THE CAR, THEY ONLY TOOK IT ON A TEST DRIVE. I HAVE BEEN HAVING ANXIETY ATTACKS EVERYTIME I HEAR THAT NOISE, MY BACK AND SHOULDER HAVE BEEN IN PAIN AND I HAVE SEEN A SPECIALIST BECAUSE OF THIS. AND TO BE QUITE HONEST I JUST DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE MYSELF. ALSO, THE FRONT BRAKE ROTARS ARE WARPED AND THIS IS THE 2ND TIME THAT THEY HAVE BEEN REPLACED IN THE 3 1/2 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. I THINK THAT IS A BIT MUCH.*AK

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-09-26
  • VIN: 4B3AU42Y1TE
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE CAR (1996 DODGE AVENGER ES) WAS IN TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE. THE DEALER CALLED TO INFORM ME THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE READY TO FALL OFF THE CAR AND NEEDED REPLACED AT A COST OF $260. I ASKED IF THIS WAS THE SAME BALL JOINT THAT WAS COVERED IN AN EARLIER RECALL. AFTER A LONG PAUSE, THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS, AND THAT THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT (FIX AT NO COST TO ME). A SECOND SERVICE APPOINTMENT WAS SCHEDULED FOR A WEEK LATER. THE CAR WENT IN, AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS. WHEN I PICKED THE CAR UP, I DROVE OFF THE LOT AND IMMEDIATELY HEARD A CLANKING NOISE WHEN EVER I HIT A BUMP WITH THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. I INSPECTED THE CAR MYSELF AND FOUND A LARGE CRACK IN THE FRAME AROUND THE FRONT-MOST UPPER CONTROL ARM MOUNTING BOLT ON THE RIGHT FRONT STRUT TOWER. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE SERVICE WRITER REMARKED BOY, THAT IS THE LARGEST CRACK I'VE EVER SEEN. YOU SHOULDNT DRIVE THAT CAR BECAUSE THE WHEEL COULD FALL OFF. I SUPPOSE THE BALL JOINTS BEING BAD AND HAMMERING THE SUSPENSION CAUSED THAT [FRAME] TO CRACK. HOWEVER, THE SERVICE WRITER HAD NO ANSWER WHEN ASKED HOW THEY MISSED THE CRACK DURING THE WORK ON THE LOWER CONTROL ARM THE DAY BEFORE. AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THE DEALERSHIP GENERAL MANAGER, AND TO THE DODGE CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE NUMBER; NO ONE AT DODGE WOULD FORMALLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE DEFECTIVE BALL JOINTS CAUSED THE STRESS CRACK OR THAT A PROBLEM EXISTED WITH THE UPPER CONTROL ARM; DESPITE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE FOR SEBRINGS AND AVENGERS WITH VERY SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I HAVE DIGITAL PICTURES OF THE CRACK IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED. IT HAS SINCE BEEN FIXED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY WIFE AND CHILDREN, HOWEVER I AM VERY DISPLEASED WITH HOW IT WAS HANDLED BY DODGE AND THE DEALER. *LA

Negative 1996 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Ahmed Mueller 2024-11-28

I bought the car brand new, but unfortunately, I started to dislike it after only two years. Eventually, after 9.5 years and 70,000 miles, I decided it was time to move on. I had to replace the transmission after just three years and 30,000 miles, and now it's acting up again. The O2 sensor light has been on for the past four years, and I've replaced virtually every sensor, including a $600 part of the manifold. The door panel has been falling apart for two years now, and the struts, ball joints, and bushings were all worn out by 50,000 miles. The rack and pinion also gave out at 60,000 miles. The final straw was when the control arm snapped, causing the car to drop. My mechanic suggested that I get rid of the car quickly, as it's literally rotting away.

  2. Weston Schoen 2024-11-05

I knew I had to have this car the moment I laid eyes on it. While it has had its fair share of belt and O2 sensor issues, I've managed to keep my transmission in perfect condition after 160k miles of racing and double clutching. As with most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it, and taking good care of it has kept my problems to a minimum. The most expensive repair I've had to make was replacing a control arm. However, finding custom parts for it has been a bit of a challenge, and I've had to fabricate some parts myself. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great. On the bright side, the turbocharged ES has some serious power under the hood!

  3. Cielo Hansen 2024-09-05

I bought this car as my first one. Unfortunately, only 2 weeks after getting it, the transmission blew. When I tried to return it, the seller had disappeared, and I ended up having to pay $3k. Later on, the heater core went out, which was a difficult and expensive repair. Additionally, the car has an electrical issue that causes it to stall out frequently. Overall, it has been a frustrating experience.

I wouldn't consider owning another Dodge. The transmission failed as soon as the warranty expired. I have had to replace numerous ball joints and wheel bearings. The wiper fluid pump stopped working at 100,000 miles, and the exhaust leaked at 75,000 miles. The power locks also stopped working. However, it is important to note that these issues are not uncommon with Dodge vehicles. If it's not a Hemi, it may not be the best choice for me.

This car has major problems and I do not recommend buying it.

I bought this car during my freshman year of college for $900. It had an oil leak and needed new brakes. I fixed the oil leak by installing a new head gasket (a known problem with Chryslers) and replaced the timing belt and tensioner. I also spent $60 on new brakes. Unfortunately, I broke the trans pinion shaft while doing high-speed doughnuts in the snow (whoops!). However, I bought a new differential and it has worked great ever since. I have done regular maintenance on the car, such as replacing belts, tires, and the O2 sensor as needed. I even rewired the A/C in auto class and now it will freeze you out! Recently, the car hit 200k miles and it is still running as strong as ever. The car looks great, handles like a dream, and is fun to drive. On the interstate, it averages over 30 mpg and recently hit 37 mpg on the highway, while in town it gets 24 mpg.

I am so glad to hear that your son is safe after the collision. It sounds like the 1996 Avenger ES was a reliable and well-built car that did its job in protecting your son. It's understandable that he is upset about losing his first car, but it's great to hear that he formed a bond with it. The car's design seems to have been well thought out, with comfortable seats and easy access for a car seat. It's great to hear that the car handled well and was fun to drive, with no major issues. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Avenger ES.

I bought this car brand new and have been doing all the maintenance myself. Sometimes people drive their cars without realizing that it needs maintenance, and when it finally breaks down, they blame the car. Fortunately, I have only had minor problems with my car, which were taken care of while it was still under warranty. The engine runs great, although working on it can be challenging, such as removing the intake plenum to change the plugs. After all these miles, there are some fluid leaks, but I will keep adding fluid until I can find the time to fix it. Overall, I can't imagine a car lasting any better for the amount I drive.

The car is really cool! It has a sweet style and handles perfectly. Although I have had some normal problems, I haven't experienced any major ones. I think it would be even better if the car had a turbo on the 420A engine like the Eclipse that it shares its platform with. The car looks fast but is missing the power (4 cyl) that it should have. It will compete with the ricers, which I love. Additionally, the car is starting to get aftermarket performance, which is even better!
