The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.

Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.

Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2017 Ram 3500 problems

The 2017 RAM 3500 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the significant issues is related to the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin, which can stick in the open position due to higher temperatures. This problem can cause the transmission to shift out of park into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition. Fiat-Chrysler has expanded a previous recall of 1.8 million vehicles to include trucks with column shifters that were built between 01/01/2017 and 01/10/2018 to address this issue.

Another common problem reported is the outboard steering linkage jam nut that may loosen, allowing one end of the drag link to separate. This issue can cause a complete loss of steering control, which is a significant safety concern. FCA hasn't provided a recall date, but they need to hurry up as the problem is already responsible for 8 accidents.

The uConnect infotainment system has also been reported to have issues, with the system often booting into a blank screen, becoming unresponsive to the touch, or rebooting at random times. This problem can be frustrating for owners as it forces them to turn off their cars, restart, and hope for a better outcome.

The 2017 RAM 3500 has also been reported to have issues with the front end shaking violently while driving, known as the "death wobble". This problem usually happens after hitting a bump while traveling at highway speeds and doesn't stop until the truck slows down. This issue can be dangerous, especially when pulling a trailer, as it can cause a loss of steering control.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the brake pedal being too high, making it difficult to reach and keep their foot on the floor. Other issues reported include poor fuel mileage, poor trailer hook-ups, poor service, and the front end not staying aligned.

These are some of the common problems reported by owners of the 2017 RAM 3500. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 3C63R3LL4HG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: [XXX] I got a check engine light and associated ABS and traction control light. Roads were dry and braking seemed fine. Lights eventually went out. Service department at dealership said sometimes moisture will cause this. No codes. Between May and October this problem has become repetitive and has been in the dealership service department multiple times. Codes show only when lights are on. Wheel speed sensor has been replaced (twice), but did not solve problem. Other features affected when these lights are on: 4WD will not engage, cruise control inop, rear collision sensor inoperative. My truck has been in the shop (dealership at Lithia in Anchorage, AK) since 10 Oct. Technician has said it needs ABS module and hydraulic pump, but FCA (or Stellantis who issued service contract) will not release parts (or they are out of parts and won’t admit). Apparently Ram engineers don’t believe service tech and are having him chase an electrical problem and now hub replacement. A quick internet search and it appears thousands of Ram owners (17-18) have dealt with this problem. The mileage is just shy of 110,000 and service contract expires at 125k or Jun 25. As a consumer I’m stuck between Ram engineers, and service department at dealership (currently without vehicle). A heavy duty pickup in Alaska is useless w/o 4WD on the rapidly approaching winter. This is obviously a known problem and needs resolution.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 3C63R3JL5HG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Component Failure: ABS ECU and HCU modules presented a trouble code C0020-01 after dashboard warning of ABS System problem. Safety Risk: Pulling my 12,000 trailer down the I-5 Grapevine without ABS, Traction Control or Cruise Control is very dangerous to myself and others. Failure Reproduced and confirmed by independent service center. Manufacturer (Stellantis) RAM insisted they change the HCU module before changing the ECU module (P/N 68347098AC). The HCU replacement did not clear the code, The manufactuer has a hold on shipping any ECU units to their dealer network. Truck has been out of service for three weeks! Dated 10/22/2024

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 3C63RRHL4HG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While pulling my trailer on the interstate with cruise control set, I was going up a hill when all of a sudden my engine RPMs skyrocketed and my truck simultaneously lost propulsion. The cruise control system then disabled itself. My truck had slowed down enough that I turned my hazard lights on, and then selected a lower gear due to the decreased speed. While attempting to accelerate back to a normal speed, my trucks RPMs again skyrocketed and my truck simultaneously lost propulsion. I was now fairly certain that my clutch was slipping. I was able to limp the truck back to my shop. I then contacted my dealership asking if this would be covered by the manufacture powertrain warranty, they informed that it was not. I then asked for them to order me a new flywheel, clutch kit, and all other incidental parts. It was at this time the dealer advised that I instead purchase an after-market performance clutch because they had seen very high failure rates from the OEM clutches. Not wanting the risk of using parts not designed by the OEM, I elected to use all OEM replacement parts. Upon installation of the new clutch parts, I discovered the clutch friction material was not even warn down on the slipping clutch. After the repairs, my truck was back to normal until, out of the blue again, the same thing happened with approximately 12,000 miles on the replacement OEM clutch components. Remembering what the dealer said about the high failure rates, I decided to hang onto the original clutch, pressure plate and flywheel incase the want or need to examine it would arise later. My trailer complies with all of the manufactures rated weight capacities. The now slipping replacement OEM clutch has not yet been removed from the truck. I do not want to use after-market replacement parts, however I am now concerned about using the replacement OEM parts due to the unexpected loss of propulsion. Said issues occurred at approximate ODO of 46,800 miles and again at 58,800 miles.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
  • VIN: 3C63R3GL1HG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The Hydraulic Control Unit Chrysler part number 68143491AA failed and Ram refuses to replace/repair it and I’ve been waiting a year. This causes the Anti-lock braking system and Traction control system to no longer function limiting function under wet or slippery conditions. This puts the driver and others at risk. It also disables the cruise control and 4 wheel drive. I have contacted my local dealer multiple times and they have made no attempt to help me. The vehicle/component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no Warning lamps/messaged before failure only after. These would be ABS lamp and traction control lamp plus a service ABS warning message. "

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: 3C63RRJL8HG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On two separate occasions I had total brake loss , the truck has under 21,000 miles on it and while driving and trying to stop I have total brake loss , today I almost rear end a car due to the failure, luckily for them I have relatively good reflexes and I don’t panic , if either of those were not true I possibly could of killed the two occupants of the car in front of me , I was traveling approximately 70 miles an hour on the interstate had had to apply my brakes. When I did I had absolutely no brakes at all, no idiot lights or anything warning me of the problem, this was the second time this occurred , the first time I was on my way home at night and went to stop at a stop sign at an intersection and again total brake loss , both these times I limped home , hoping I would make it home safely. This needs to be investigated before some dies

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 3C63R3FLXHG
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The truck had a recall done on its steering system. The steering part affected is the drag link. The drag link connects to the steering wheel to the tie rod . The recall fix was to weld the drag link jam nuts so they wouldn't come loose and cause a steering loss. Since the recall the vehicle s drag link can't be aligned correctly with the tie rod the drag link is attached to the steering wheel so when the truck is aligned it backs one side out to far to keep the steering wheel straight. This drag link that was recalled is a (safety issue) it's a bad design and causes the vehicle to sway all over the road and if it fails the truck looses all steering and goes where ever it wants to go Wich will cause a horrible accident and harm innocent family's on the highway including my own family it can lead to the death of people in my vehicle and around my vehicle it's a serious safety issue and a horrible recall fix on rams end. I have a appointment at the ram dealership to get new tires on but I don't want the new tires put on until this issue is fixed as the truck needs alignment and this safety issue aka the welded drag link replaced with the correct fix that the new rams have the new style drag link . It's a safety hazard. And innocent people can get hurt by the horrible recall fix. It's in acceptable. And very unsafe it's hard to keep the truck in a straight line on the roads it's all over the place like a drunk driver .

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 3C63R3EL0HG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Third time the ABS module has been replaced in 29,000 miles. Took months for our dealer to acquire the part. Second one with the "AB" suffix. Truck only used for livestock towing hence the low mileage. When the ABS-STC go out the warning indicators come on along with a "Service Electronic Braking" system message. When this occurs, not only are the two mandated important safety systems inoperative, four wheel drive wont engage. I don't use cruise control but hundreds of reports state it also is inoperative. Why is Stellantis and NHTSA dragging their feet on getting this issue resolved and recalled once and for all. Not having Anti Lock Brakes and Stability Control are dangerous. I don't get it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
  • VIN: 3C63RRML9HG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Abs and traction control lights come on, simultaneously canceling cruise control. Vehicle speed immediately slows, and traffic behind me catches up quickly as it takes a few seconds to react and get the vehicle back up to speed. Also, no abs in wet condition, etc. Bumps in the road cause the system to go out and come back on. It's become such a problem that I've had to pull the fuse for abs, which means no more cruise control. But also activates the red brake warning light. So if another problem comes up, I won't know as the brake light is already on.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-05
  • VIN: 3C63RRJL6HG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Beginning in 2018, the ABS system will stop working intermittently and a number of trouble lights will come on, such as "Service ABS system" and, at the same time the cruise control and 4 wheel drive will stop working. I took it to a dealer while still under warranty and they claimed the ABS system was fine, and they could find no problem with the ABS, which had to be a lie since a code would certainly have shown up. I will go months without a problem then it will start intermittently going out for weeks at a time. This happened once in a snow storm near Denver, CO and I nearly went into the ditch because the 4wd suddenly stopped working. My research shows this is a common and serious problem with the 2017 and 2018 Rams and the manufacturer is well aware of the defective HCU that causes this safety issue. It needs to be repaired in a recall. An OBT scan shows that the ABS control unit intermittently suffers a "complete electrical failure" in the hydraulic control unit of the ABS.

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The abs control module and pump has been going out for the last 4 years with intermittent alarm every 30-44seconds. Every time I call dodge dealer the part is on back order for 4 years now I finally found a remanufactured one on eBay. This is a serious problem, very unsafe and I have talked to a lot of people with dodge ram trucks 2017-2018 that have the same issues and a couple people that have had bad accidents they believe is because now no traction control. Dodge needs to be held accountable for the parts they put in the truck and for not having a replacement ready to go.

If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2018 RAM 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 Cab Chassis, and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.
  • Consequence: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will update the Body Control Module software. Dealers will also test the BTSI operation, replacing the solenoid as necessary. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U11.
