Daewoo Leganza problems

The Daewoo Leganza is an executive car (E-segment), sometimes classified as luxury large family car (D-segment), that was manufactured and marketed by the automobile manufacturer Daewoo. The Leganza was available as a front engine, front-wheel drive, four door, five passenger limousine in South Korea over a single generation for model years 1997-2002 and internally designated as the V100.
The Leganza replaced mid-size luxury car Daewoo Prince and was succeeded by the Daewoo Magnus (V200) using a new version of the Leganza's platform. The name Leganza was a portmanteau of the Italian words elegante (elegant) and forza (power).
Development
The Leganza (V100), along with Lanos (T100) and Nubira (J100) were central to Daewoo's effort to develop a proprietary range to replace vehicles previously licensed from GM.
Daewoo turned to global consultants and suppliers in developing the three new lines. Under design direction of ex-Porsche and ex BMW engineering chief Dr. Ulrich Bez, the Leganza was developed in just 30 months, using Daewoo's growing in-house R&D network in Korea, Worthing and Munich along with other global consultants. Transmissions were provided by ZF and engines were sourced from GM Australia.
The Leganza was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, using the themes developed for Giugiaro's 1990 Jaguar Kensington concept, which also heavily influenced the 1991 Toyota Aristo (sold as the first generation Lexus GS outside of Japan). Styling was also compared to the Maserati Coupé, another of Giugiaro's designs. Bodywork achieved a Cd of 0.32 Cd.
Development of the Leganza began at the end of 1993, after work began on the Lanos and the Nubira, delaying the Leganza introduction in some markets. After initial research of the Leganza leading to development of a mid-size executive car, further work on the V100 (prototype name) began. Styling took three months, the summer of 1994, aided by ItalDesign's offices in Kensington. Road tests began in May 1995, ended exactly a year later, and the Leganza was ready for production in February 1997.

Proper maintenance and care of the car's electrical components are crucial to prevent these problems. Repairs may include replacing the battery or repairing damaged wiring.
- First-Generation Leganza Issues:
- For models from 1997 to 2002, there were problems with the fuel system, suspension, and brakes. Regular maintenance is necessary to address these issues. Additionally, engine problems and a faulty timing belt tensioner were common in the second-generation Leganza models (2002-2004). Overheating, misfires, and oil leaks were reported for Leganzas equipped with the X20SED or X22SE engine.
- Air Conditioning, Brakes, and Power Windows:
- Second-generation Leganzas (2002-2004) faced issues with the air conditioning system, brakes, and power windows. Owners reported problems like A/C failure, brake pedal issues, and power window malfunctions. These issues required attention to ensure proper functioning of these components.
- Starting Problems and ABS Issues:
- Common starting problems were linked to a faulty camshaft position sensor, leading to engine management warning lights. The EGR valves were prone to blockages, causing acceleration issues. ABS warning lights could indicate a cracked ABS reluctor ring, necessitating replacement. Regular maintenance and checks are crucial to address these issues.

I've owned this car for 8 years and have had minimal problems. I understand that repair shops can be intimidating if you don't know much about cars, but I've found that I can get practically any part for this car at my local Autozone. If a mechanic won't work on it, I believe it's time to find a new mechanic. After all, this car has 4 wheels and an engine just like every other car on the road. It's much easier to work on than a VW, that's for sure. When my wife bought it in 2002, I had my doubts, but it has turned out to be a great vehicle. Even at 10 years old, it looks amazing, is dependable, and has cost us practically nothing to own. I think it's a great car! It's too bad Daewoo went under here.

I've owned this car for almost three years and I couldn't be happier with its reliability and performance. It has required no repairs other than scheduled maintenance. Not only is it a great-looking car, it rivals more expensive models in terms of style. While the gas mileage in town is mediocre, it gets up to 29 mpg on the freeway. The radio could use an upgrade, but that's a minor issue. One thing to note is that the steering wheel can obscure the speedometer when it's in a lower position. It's unfortunate that this car has been unfairly criticized due to Daewoo's bankruptcy, but the quality of the car speaks for itself. With GM now handling parts and service, there's no need for concern.

This car is built with Honda-like quality, which means that nothing goes wrong with it. Even after 37000 miles, it still drives and feels like new. In fact, its fuel economy exceeds EPA estimates for the highway. Using Mobil 1 oil may also help. The only minor issue is some wind noise from the sunroof. The factory tires are the only problem of note, as they are showing much wear. Replacing them with better quality tires may help extend their life.

Outstanding value in a vehicle of similar size to the Accord or Camry. This is an extremely reliable, comfortable, and well-built vehicle. I will definitely buy another one - Daewoo has a winner here.

I think you've made an excellent choice with your car! The comfort and ease of maneuvering are both fantastic qualities. And not only does it feel and drive great, but it looks amazing too! Your 2000 Daewoo Laganza SE in silver is a real head-turner, with paint that shines like something James Bond might drive.

I recently purchased a Leganza with 11000 miles on it. Although I couldn't afford a new car and my options were limited for used cars, I was impressed with the Leganza compared to the Cavalier or Focus. After test driving it, I was convinced that it felt like a luxury car and I had to have it. Unfortunately, at around 16000 miles, it started ticking and at 19000 miles, the transmission locked up. The biggest issue now is that Daewoo is not standing behind the warranty and I have a lifter gone on my engine and a locked transmission. It's worth noting that the car has a built-in shift lock release. Additionally, I'm getting horrible gas mileage.

I bought my car brand new in January 2000 and sold it in January 2005. Unfortunately, the maintenance costs started to increase after 2003 and there was only one dealer within a 100-mile radius who could service it. Everything had to be special ordered, and I couldn't even go to regular muffler shops like Midas or Meineke. The exhaust system alone cost me over $800. The first 50k miles were great, but if you're considering buying a used one with 60-80k miles, make sure to get evidence of a new timing belt or DON'T BUY IT! I had to replace mine at 65k miles along with other items, which I caught just before it gave out. The dealer had three others in with blown engines. It seems like Daewoo designed this car to blow up 5000 miles after the powertrain warranty expired. There were often check engine light issues as well, and the gas mileage started to deteriorate rapidly after 70-75k miles.

I still enjoy driving this car--peppy, if a little slow to accelerate--but unfortunately, in the past year, it has required major repairs (price wise) roughly every 6 weeks. Additionally, parts have to be ordered from GM and shipped from SOUTH KOREA, which can be a bit of a hassle. The problems started at roughly 80k, and I am now at 93k, and they just keep getting bigger and harder to get parts for.

I really love my car, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the lifters after driving less than 10,000 miles. Despite the dealership's attempt to fix the issue by changing the oil and replacing the lifters, the problem persisted. I had to go through the hassle of having the head and engine replaced, but unfortunately, the issue still persisted. The car was out of commission for a total of 71 days, which was quite frustrating. However, I reached out to the BBB, and they were very helpful in trying to resolve the issue. Although I filed a complaint three times, unfortunately, my case was refused. Due to the plummeting value of the car, I had to pay a lot to get out of it. Last week, I was only offered $5,000 for a trade-in. Despite these issues, the car is still beautiful and loaded with great standard features. However, if I had to do it again, I would have saved my money and bought a used one for less than half the price. If you do decide to buy one, just be aware of the potential issues.

The dealership has replaced numerous sensors, yet the engine light persists. Additionally, the air compressor required replacement at only 33,000 miles. However, I am confident that we can resolve these issues and ensure the vehicle is running smoothly.
