Daewoo Leganza problems

daewoo logo

The Daewoo Leganza is an executive car (E-segment), sometimes classified as luxury large family car (D-segment), that was manufactured and marketed by the automobile manufacturer Daewoo. The Leganza was available as a front engine, front-wheel drive, four door, five passenger limousine in South Korea over a single generation for model years 1997-2002 and internally designated as the V100.

The Leganza replaced mid-size luxury car Daewoo Prince and was succeeded by the Daewoo Magnus (V200) using a new version of the Leganza's platform. The name Leganza was a portmanteau of the Italian words elegante (elegant) and forza (power).

Development

The Leganza (V100), along with Lanos (T100) and Nubira (J100) were central to Daewoo's effort to develop a proprietary range to replace vehicles previously licensed from GM.

Daewoo turned to global consultants and suppliers in developing the three new lines. Under design direction of ex-Porsche and ex BMW engineering chief Dr. Ulrich Bez, the Leganza was developed in just 30 months, using Daewoo's growing in-house R&D network in Korea, Worthing and Munich along with other global consultants. Transmissions were provided by ZF and engines were sourced from GM Australia.

The Leganza was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, using the themes developed for Giugiaro's 1990 Jaguar Kensington concept, which also heavily influenced the 1991 Toyota Aristo (sold as the first generation Lexus GS outside of Japan). Styling was also compared to the Maserati Coupé, another of Giugiaro's designs. Bodywork achieved a Cd of 0.32 Cd.

Development of the Leganza began at the end of 1993, after work began on the Lanos and the Nubira, delaying the Leganza introduction in some markets. After initial research of the Leganza leading to development of a mid-size executive car, further work on the V100 (prototype name) began. Styling took three months, the summer of 1994, aided by ItalDesign's offices in Kensington. Road tests began in May 1995, ended exactly a year later, and the Leganza was ready for production in February 1997.

  • Electrical Problems:
    • Owners have reported issues such as battery drain, malfunctioning sensors, warning lights, and electrical wiring problems. These issues can impact the car's performance and lead to various warning lights appearing on the dashboard. Proper maintenance and care of the car's electrical components are crucial to prevent these problems. Repairs may include replacing the battery or repairing damaged wiring.
  • First-Generation Leganza Issues:
    • For models from 1997 to 2002, there were problems with the fuel system, suspension, and brakes. Regular maintenance is necessary to address these issues. Additionally, engine problems and a faulty timing belt tensioner were common in the second-generation Leganza models (2002-2004). Overheating, misfires, and oil leaks were reported for Leganzas equipped with the X20SED or X22SE engine.
  • Air Conditioning, Brakes, and Power Windows:
    • Second-generation Leganzas (2002-2004) faced issues with the air conditioning system, brakes, and power windows. Owners reported problems like A/C failure, brake pedal issues, and power window malfunctions. These issues required attention to ensure proper functioning of these components.
  • Starting Problems and ABS Issues:
    • Common starting problems were linked to a faulty camshaft position sensor, leading to engine management warning lights. The EGR valves were prone to blockages, causing acceleration issues. ABS warning lights could indicate a cracked ABS reluctor ring, necessitating replacement. Regular maintenance and checks are crucial to address these issues.

These common problems with Daewoo Leganza cars highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and attention to key components like the transmission, electrical system, engine, and various other parts to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

Latest negative Daewoo Leganza car reviews

  1. Kacey Farrell 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 1999

I purchased my Leganza SX in August 2009 with the hope that it would be fuel-efficient like other Asian-built cars with 2-liter, 4-cylinder engines. However, I do a lot of driving, including short 30-minute highway drives multiple times a day, and I have found that the gas consumption is not what I expected. My friend, who owns an Infiniti I30t (6 cyl) and a Mustang LX 5.0 v8, gets better mileage than I do in my car. While the Leganza SX may not be a Honda, Nissan, or Toyota, it is still a reliable car. Although the handling can be a bit loose and sloppy, and the motor/steering can feel like it's laboring at higher speeds, it is still a good car for the price. As with any car, parts can be expensive, but overall, I would recommend the Leganza SX to anyone looking for a reliable car that won't break the bank.

  2. Horace Bartoletti 2024-10-14

    Vehicle year: 1999

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought brand new back in December 1999 from Madison Square Chrysler and Daewoo in Huntsville, Alabama. Overall, I've had decent service out of it. Unfortunately, I did have to pay out of pocket for two repairs that seem to be common issues with Daewoos: the fuel gauge stopped working (parts & labor cost me $140.00) and the brake light switch stopped working, which prevented the car from going into gear (parts & labor cost me $53.00). However, I do want to warn potential buyers about the resale value of Daewoos. I've had my car for just over 2 years and have tried to trade it in, but unfortunately, I've been told by car dealerships that Daewoos don't hold their value and that no one wants a used one. So, if you're considering buying a Daewoo, just be aware that you may have to take a loss if you decide to sell it later on. Thanks for reading!

  3. Angelo Lehner 2024-10-07

    Vehicle year: 2002

This is the worst new car I have ever purchased.

  4. Clovis Kreiger 2024-09-20

    Vehicle year: 1999

The car has experienced some issues, including catching fire and needing a second engine before reaching 30k miles. Additionally, there have been frequent problems with small parts and it may require a new transmission. However, I am confident in the extended warranty provided by Daewoo before they went out of business.

  5. Jeremy VonRueden 2024-08-23

    Vehicle year: 2002

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it a couple of years ago with 70k miles on it, and now it has 111k miles. Unfortunately, the engine has been making a ticking noise lately, which has been a bit frustrating. Despite doing regular maintenance like oil changes and timing belt replacements, the car has still had some issues. Additionally, the air conditioning stopped working, which was a bummer since it was perfectly cold for the first year I had it. My husband likes the power button, but I personally don't use it much. Overall, I don't think I would purchase another Leganza. Thanks for listening!

Latest positive Daewoo Leganza car reviews

  1. Afton Carter 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2001

I'm so happy with my purchase of this car, especially since I got it at a great price due to the company going bankrupt. I feel like I got an amazing deal and I plan on keeping it for a few years, so I don't have to worry about the resale value. Overall, I'm really satisfied with my purchase!

  2. Nikko Pouros 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 2000

I've had this car for almost three years with very minimal problems. Although I am facing the drawback of resale after paying $16k in January 2000, I would still recommend it! The car has a quality CD sound system, comfortable leather seats, and good handling on snow. While the fuel injectors can be a bit sensitive and cause the engine light to come on, it's nothing to worry about. I would suggest adding a bottle of injector cleaner to your fuel tank every couple of months. Additionally, my local Toyota (formerly Daewoo and Toyota) dealer assures me that service will not be a problem even with the discontinuance of the Daewoo line. Overall, I highly recommend this car if you can find one used for around $5000 or so!

  3. Ambrose O'Keefe 2024-11-13

    Vehicle year: 2001

I'm so glad to hear that you had no problems with your car! After reading the expert review, I have to respectfully disagree with their notes on the suspension being less than good. In my opinion, it's a great car at a good price. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good value.

  4. Dillon Armstrong 2024-10-27

    Vehicle year: 2000

Best car you ever owned! It's a shame Daewoo is no longer in the US. If given time, this car maker would have surely outdone all imports.

  5. Corbin Wisoky 2024-10-26

    Vehicle year: 2001

I have had my Leganza for over three years and I absolutely love this car. It has great styling, really nice features, and it is a pleasure to drive. I think that this car should have done much better in the US than it did. GM has rebadged them as Suzukis. I would probably replace my Leganza with a comparable Suzuki (Daewoo). Well equipped car, at a really nice price.
