2003 Chevrolet Venture problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Venture is a minivan produced by General Motors for the 1997 to 2005 model years. The Chevrolet Venture, along with most of its General Motors minivan siblings, was built at GM's Doraville, Georgia, assembly plant.

Use of name

The Venture name was first used on a 1988 Chevrolet concept car, in this case a full-sized four-door sedan more aerodynamic than the 1991-1996 Chevrolet Caprice.

History

The Venture was introduced in 1996 for the 1997 model year as a replacement for the radically styled Lumina APV. In the United States, it was also sold as the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport, which was later renamed as the Pontiac Montana for 1999 (2000 in Canada). The Venture came in three trim levels, the base, LS, and LT. The base models of the Venture were short wheelbase models which came equipped with cloth upholstery, front bucket seats with fixed head restraints, a 2nd-row 2-passenger bench seat, and steel wheels. The LS came in both short and long wheelbases, and offered aluminum wheels, a varied seating configuration, adjustable head restraints, side airbags, power windows (optional on the base models), and a remote keyless entry system. The LT model was an upscale of the LS and was exclusively a long wheelbase model and offered a power driver seat (optional on the base and LS models), optional leather seats, a roof rack (optional on the base and LS models), and a driver side sliding door (optional on the base and LS models from 1997 to 1999). The anti-lock brakes were standard on all Ventures from 1996 to 2002, but became optional on the base models later on.

The Venture and its siblings were powered by GM's 3.4 L LA1 V6, rated at 180 hp (134 kW). After 1999, the engine was slightly redesigned to produce an extra 5 hp (4 kW), for a total of 185 hp (138 kW), and the alarm system for seatbelts, door ajar, low fuel, etc. have been changed. All Ventures used a four-speed automatic transmission. The Venture was one of the few minivans to have an 8-passenger seating configuration as an option when most minivans seated up to 7 passengers. In 2000, the driver side sliding door became standard on all trim levels, when the passenger side only sliding door models of minivans have rapidly fallen out of favor since the 1996 models of Chrysler minivans. The exterior was refreshed in 2001, a back-up alarm was added to indicate possible obstacles behind the vehicle, and all-wheel drive was introduced in 2002. Also for 2002 was a new steering wheel equivalent to the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala, replacing the steering wheel equivalent to the 1995-2001 Chevrolet Lumina. New for this generation, cabin air filters were installed, and the filters can be accessed from behind an access panel easily accessed from inside the glove compartment.

The optional 2-3-2 seating configuration was dropped in favor of the more conventional 2-2-3 and 2-3-3 seating configurations. The 2-3-3 was the standard for the Chinese-made Buick GL8, and a 10-seats arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration was used in a Chinese-made version of the Chevrolet Venture for export to the Philippines and Latin America (where it sold alongside the U.S. Venture) where 10-seaters are favored with lower taxes. Reviews and sales were generally lukewarm, especially about the relatively narrow cabin due to being designed for European roads. Models came in both short and long wheelbases, and with optional all-wheel drive. The third row bench seat was designed to fold flat (introduced for 2001 and available on LS and Warner Bros. models), but forming a higher floor unlike the Honda, Mazda and Nissan minivans that folded into a well behind the third row.

The Venture was replaced after 2005 by the Chevrolet Uplander, which was essentially a facelift with one long wheelbase configuration, and a longer nose which served chiefly to improve crush distance and styling more like an SUV. Only the long-wheelbase Venture was sold for 2005 in the US but the short-wheelbase was still offered in Canada. Production of the Chevy Venture ended on June 24, 2005.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1GNDX03E43D
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Driving on a driveway (estimated speed 5-10 mph) when I noted that the driver side door didn't seem completely closed. I tugged on the door handle to shut it and instantaneously felt the driver-side side airbag deploy, scraping my left forearm, left ear, and rupturing the left eardrum. There had been no collision or accident involving the car or any other structure. The vehicle has not been in a prior accident, and has not had additional electric work performed to any of its systems since manufacturing. The vehicle is available for inspection, it has not been inspected yet by a manufacturer or dealer, and the airbag affected my safety by causing physical harm due to faulty deployment.

My husband searched the issue an found a recall for some 2003 and 2004 Chevrolet and other GM products listed as NHTSA Campaign # 07V349000 and NHTSA Action # EA07006. It does list the same vehicle I have a 2003 Chevy Venture van. The recall covers just certain months of production. From our research it seems that a broader recall in needed

  • VIN: 1GNDU03E23D
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL BULLETIN, 06230, AND THE VIN NUMBERS OF VEHICLES AFFECTED DOES INCLUDE MY VEHICLE. HOWEVER GM WILL NOT COVER THE COST TO REPAIR, CLAIMING MY VEHICLE IS NOT AFFECTED. OBVIOUSLY IT IS AFFECTED OR IT WOULD NOT BE LEAKING FUEL FROM THE EXACT SAME AREA COVERED BY THE RECALL! THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE STATING THE SAME EXPERIENCE. WHY WON'T GM COVER THE REPAIR EVEN WHEN THERE IS A RECALL? TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, GM NO LONGER MAKES THE REPLACEMENT TANK AND I CAN NOT FIND AN AFTERMARKET TANK EITHER.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-29
  • Fire: 1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2003 CHEVY VENTURE AND WHEN I PURCHASED IT, I NOTICED THAT THE TURN SIGNALS WOULD START BLINKING REAL FAST ON THE DASH. WHEN I WOULD LOOK AT THEM ON THE OUTSIDE THEY WERE BLINKING FINE, AS WAS THE DASH LIGHTS. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES, SO I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST THE BULBS THEMSELVES. THEN ON MARCH 29, 2014, I NOTICED A LITTLE PUFF OF SMOKE COME FROM THE HEADLIGHT AREA WHEN MY WIFE PULLED INTO OUR DRIVEWAY. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE TURN/PARKING LIGHT WAS OUT. I LUCKILY HAD A BULB FROM ANOTHER CAR TO REPLACE IT, BUT WHEN I TOOK THE ASSEMBLY OUT AND WENT TO TURN THE CONNECTOR TO REPLACE THE BULB, AND NOTICED IT WAS HOT. THINKING THAT SOMETHING DID NOT SEEM RIGHT, I LET IT COOL DOWN AND THEN REMOVED IT. WHAT I SAW WAS THE CONNECTOR THAT HOLDS THE BULB WAS BLACK AND MELTED. IT ACTUALLY MELTED TO THE BULB ITSELF. I LOOKED AT THE BULB AND IT WAS STILL GOOD, OTHER THAN THE BOTTOM PLASTIC PART. THE WHITE SMOKE I HAD SEEN WAS EITHER THE CONNECTOR CATCHING ON FIRE AND MELTING OR THE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC ITSELF. I NEVER SAW ANY FLAMES. I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THE CONNECTOR, NOR WOULD I RISK MY FAMILY'S LIFE, SO I HAVE NO TURN SIGNAL. THEN WORSE PART IS THE DRIVER SIDE LIGHT WAS DOING THE SAME THING AS THE PASSENGER, BUT IT HAS SINCE STOPPED AND IS WORKING PROPERLY NOW THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE BULB HAS BEEN REMOVED. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-04
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GNDX03E43D
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DRIVER WAS TURNING AT TRAFFIC LIGHT AT LOW SPEED, 200 FT FROM HER HOME. WHEN TURN WAS COMPLETE, DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO RETURN STEERING WHEEL TO FORWARD POSITION, NOR WAS SHE ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE USING BRAKE PEDAL, UNTIL THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO ANOTHER ONE PARKED ALONG THE STREET. DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO EXPLAIN HOW IT COULD HAPPEN, AND THE ACCIDENT WAS CONSIDERED HER FAULT. HOWEVER, THE LATEST GM RECALL REGARDING WEAKNESS OF IGNITION KEY MECHANISM PROVIDES LOGICAL EXPLANATION OF THIS ACCIDENT. IF THE IGNITION KEY FLIPPED TO "OFF" POSITION DURING THE TURN, POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKING WOULD BE GONE, AND WHAT DRIVER DESCRIBED WOULD MAKE TOTAL SENSE. ESPECIALLY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THAT AT THAT TIME THE DRIVER HAD SEVERAL ADDITIONAL KEYS ON THE KEYCHAIN. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT 2003 CHEVROLET VENTURE IGNITION MECHANISM MAY SUFFER FROM THE SAME PROBLEM AS ONES RECALLED BY GM? *TR

MY VAN IS A LEMON AND SINCE I BOUGHT IT IT'S BEEN A MONEY PIT. IT HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES ON IT AND IT STINKS. NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. I'VE ALSO HAD TO GET A HEAD GASKET AT THE TENDER MILES OF 38,000. IT'S JUST A LEMON. IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN THE RAIN, OR SNOW IF YOU CAN'T GET YOUR WIPERS TO WORK. WISH THEY'D DESIGN THE WIPERS THEY ARE SHAPED FUNNY, AND THAT'S ONE THING THAT MAKES THEM NOT WORK WELL. *TR

Negative 2003 Chevrolet Venture car reviews

  1. Arjun Parker 2024-11-01

You bought it brand new in 2003, but unfortunately, you regret the purchase. It seems like the resale value is poor and you've experienced some issues with the coolant leaking from the manifold intake, transmission problems, and the air conditioning not working. It's understandable that you're frustrated with these problems. It's worth noting that GM has faced some challenges recently, but hopefully, you can find a solution to these issues.

  2. Alexzander Buckridge 2024-09-26

I experienced several issues with my car, including electrical problems, a faulty door latch mechanism, and a failed lower intake manifold gasket. Despite being asked to pay for the third repair, I was able to get it fixed. I also had to replace the helicoiled rocker stud and hardware twice, which cost me $239 each time. Unfortunately, the car continued to have issues, and I had to spend $2,500 to fix six more failures. Overall, this was a frustrating and expensive experience, and I ultimately decided to trade in the car for $3,100. It was not worth the cost of repairs.

  3. Marcelino Hickle 2024-08-06

That sounds frustrating! It can be tough when unexpected car repairs come up. Did you have to replace the transmission and radiator? I hope things start looking up for you soon.

  4. Jovani Hayes 2024-07-14

With 89K miles, I have had to replace several parts including the head gasket, power window motor & switches, tail lights, transmission cable, computer chip, and engine mount. Unfortunately, the latch for the glove compartment is broken and the sliding side door does not work. However, the piece holding the power window motor can easily be replaced at a cost of $700 by ordering the part from Canada. I am now considering my options and my kids have advised me to get a new car. Thank you for your understanding.

Although my previous van was a 7-year-old Pontiac and I never had any issues with it, this Venture has been quite problematic. I have had to replace the headlights 6 times, both front blinkers have blown out, the window doesn't roll up, the rear windshield wiper doesn't work, and now there is an issue with the transmission. Additionally, I have to add a quart of oil every 3 weeks between oil changes, despite the fact that it only had 80,000 miles on it when I got it. The driver's seat handle and hatch handle have also broken off. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and I am determined to find a solution.

  1. Baron Schroeder 2025-01-15

I'm on my 4th mini-van now, and I have to say, this one has been the best by far. My previous three Plymouth Voyagers were nothing but headaches. I bought this one used since new vans are out of the question until my last daughter finishes college. The van is incredibly comfortable, with seating for 8 passengers. The second-row middle seat can even be folded down to reveal cupholders and doubles as an armrest. The storage space is fantastic, and it handles really well on the road. Driving it is an absolute pleasure. Our grandchildren especially love the DVD player, which makes it perfect for vacations. It gets about 24 MPG on the highway, even when it's loaded with people and luggage. We did have to get a transmission overhaul at around 65,000 miles, but thankfully it was covered by my extended warranty. We've had a few issues with the driver's side power window, but overall, we absolutely love this vehicle. It was a great buy as a used car.

  2. Eriberto Pfeffer 2024-10-07

This car is great on gas, getting about 25 MPG, which means you can go about 500 miles on just one tank! It's also perfect for XXL people, with plenty of room and very easy in and out. The auto slide door is a lifesaver when dealing with children and baby seats. I especially love how it handles tight turns like my little nimble Neon, but with a higher eye-level. It's got more power than either of my previous vehicles, and it's quiet with a sturdy feel. The cargo area is also very useful with cubby holes. The dual heat/ac blows hard and is effective even for our 120 degree days in the desert, as well as those nippy 20 degree mornings. We did have to change the fuel filter once due to the temp gauge showing hotter than normal, but that was an easy fix.

  3. Will Padberg 2024-09-24

We recently traded our 94 Suburban for the Venture. It has AWD instead of 4WD and gets 12 mpg better. The DVD and wireless headphones are a lifesaver for our 5-year-old on long trips. There's plenty of room for both people and their belongings. Although we had to replace an AWD sensor, we are still just as happy with the Venture as we were when we first bought it.

  4. Jo Wolff 2024-09-13

This van is definitely the best van of the year! I just got back from a 3500 mile road trip and it was such a smooth ride on both the interstate and 2 and 4 lane back roads. The mileage was great too, averaging around 25-28 even with a full load of people and cargo. I'm already looking forward to my next one, which will be an '05. It's a shame that Chevy replaced it with the Uplander!

  5. Zackery Hintz 2024-09-06

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. While there have been a few issues with the electronics (like the daytime running lights only working in foggy conditions and the oxygen sensor dying), I haven't had any major mechanical problems in the 6 years that I've been driving it. The heater controls can be a bit finicky at times, but overall it's been a reliable car. Plus, I'm really happy with the gas mileage - I can get up to 34 mpg (Can) even when I'm loaded up with stuff. Thanks for listening!

Another common problem is the heating system. Took a while to figure that one out. In the spring and fall in Missouri ur constantly switching from heat to air.
