The Chevrolet Venture is a minivan produced by General Motors for the 1997 to 2005 model years. The Chevrolet Venture, along with most of its General Motors minivan siblings, was built at GM's Doraville, Georgia, assembly plant.
Use of name
The Venture name was first used on a 1988 Chevrolet concept car, in this case a full-sized four-door sedan more aerodynamic than the 1991-1996 Chevrolet Caprice.
History
The Venture was introduced in 1996 for the 1997 model year as a replacement for the radically styled Lumina APV. In the United States, it was also sold as the Oldsmobile Silhouette and the Pontiac Trans Sport, which was later renamed as the Pontiac Montana for 1999 (2000 in Canada). The Venture came in three trim levels, the base, LS, and LT. The base models of the Venture were short wheelbase models which came equipped with cloth upholstery, front bucket seats with fixed head restraints, a 2nd-row 2-passenger bench seat, and steel wheels. The LS came in both short and long wheelbases, and offered aluminum wheels, a varied seating configuration, adjustable head restraints, side airbags, power windows (optional on the base models), and a remote keyless entry system. The LT model was an upscale of the LS and was exclusively a long wheelbase model and offered a power driver seat (optional on the base and LS models), optional leather seats, a roof rack (optional on the base and LS models), and a driver side sliding door (optional on the base and LS models from 1997 to 1999). The anti-lock brakes were standard on all Ventures from 1996 to 2002, but became optional on the base models later on.
The Venture and its siblings were powered by GM's 3.4 L LA1 V6, rated at 180 hp (134 kW). After 1999, the engine was slightly redesigned to produce an extra 5 hp (4 kW), for a total of 185 hp (138 kW), and the alarm system for seatbelts, door ajar, low fuel, etc. have been changed. All Ventures used a four-speed automatic transmission. The Venture was one of the few minivans to have an 8-passenger seating configuration as an option when most minivans seated up to 7 passengers. In 2000, the driver side sliding door became standard on all trim levels, when the passenger side only sliding door models of minivans have rapidly fallen out of favor since the 1996 models of Chrysler minivans. The exterior was refreshed in 2001, a back-up alarm was added to indicate possible obstacles behind the vehicle, and all-wheel drive was introduced in 2002. Also for 2002 was a new steering wheel equivalent to the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala, replacing the steering wheel equivalent to the 1995-2001 Chevrolet Lumina. New for this generation, cabin air filters were installed, and the filters can be accessed from behind an access panel easily accessed from inside the glove compartment.
The optional 2-3-2 seating configuration was dropped in favor of the more conventional 2-2-3 and 2-3-3 seating configurations. The 2-3-3 was the standard for the Chinese-made Buick GL8, and a 10-seats arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration was used in a Chinese-made version of the Chevrolet Venture for export to the Philippines and Latin America (where it sold alongside the U.S. Venture) where 10-seaters are favored with lower taxes. Reviews and sales were generally lukewarm, especially about the relatively narrow cabin due to being designed for European roads. Models came in both short and long wheelbases, and with optional all-wheel drive. The third row bench seat was designed to fold flat (introduced for 2001 and available on LS and Warner Bros. models), but forming a higher floor unlike the Honda, Mazda and Nissan minivans that folded into a well behind the third row.
The Venture was replaced after 2005 by the Chevrolet Uplander, which was essentially a facelift with one long wheelbase configuration, and a longer nose which served chiefly to improve crush distance and styling more like an SUV. Only the long-wheelbase Venture was sold for 2005 in the US but the short-wheelbase was still offered in Canada. Production of the Chevy Venture ended on June 24, 2005.

- Summary: [XXX] 2021, Purchased 4 tires Walmart, Radar Dimax AS-8 size: 225/60R16. June 2023 tire badly separated. Denied warranty because Walmart did not install. Purchase 2 more identical tires and picked up [XXX] 2023 and installed both. Bad tire trashed no longer have in possession. Several months later had another tire separate so installed the extra tire I had. In March 2024 the wife told me the van was shaking again. Found two tires separating. One was from the newer purchase. Tried calling the Manufacture numerous times (800) 725-1482 to let them know of the problems with their tires and possible safety. Received no responses. I have never in my life had tires like the separate. Had a couple trailer tires years ago but probable heavy load and older tires, so expected. I have since purchased some Goodyear tires for replacement and currently have three of the separated tires and the one remaining good tire, which my wife will not let me install on anything she drives. - Summary: Driving on a driveway (estimated speed 5-10 mph) when I noted that the driver side door didn't seem completely closed. I tugged on the door handle to shut it and instantaneously felt the driver-side side airbag deploy, scraping my left forearm, left ear, and rupturing the left eardrum. There had been no collision or accident involving the car or any other structure. The vehicle has not been in a prior accident, and has not had additional electric work performed to any of its systems since manufacturing. The vehicle is available for inspection, it has not been inspected yet by a manufacturer or dealer, and the airbag affected my safety by causing physical harm due to faulty deployment.

The contact took the vehicle to another certified mechanic who performed a front-end alignment however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a third mechanic who identified that the noise seemed to be coming from the steering wheel; however, the mechanic could not verify the cause of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 236,000.

- Summary: In January 2022, I noticed white smoke coming from the engine and a mechanic said it was the water pump that needed to be replaced, so I have it replaced. Recently, I noticed the same white smoke coming from the engine and took it back to the same mechanic who installed the water pump. The mechanic said it was the intake manifold that caused the white smoke. I decided to take it to another mechanic to see if the first diagnosis was correct and that mechanic confirmed the first mechanic's diagnosis and my previous experience with another GM vehicle (1997 Vhevy Lumina) that had the exact same problem: water pump went out and intake manifold also started to fail until the Lumina's engine was fried.

Due to GM Manufactuing, they only allow Dex Cool coolant for their vehicles but not everyone carries Dex Cool. Also, the oxygen sensor code need to be read oxygen sensor only and not with 4 or 5 other codes.

STARTED THE MOTOR AND IT SOUNDED DIFFERENT SO I POPPED THE HOOD AND THE COOLANT OVERFLOW WAS BUBBLING. NOTICED THE WINDSHIELD STARTED STEAMING UP, AND A VERY ROUGH IDLE. SHUT THE MOTOR OFF AND STARTED IT AGAIN. WHITE SMOKE COMING FROM THE TAILPIPE. TURN IT OFF AGAIN AND OPENED THE OIL CAP AND IT HAD THE MAYO LOOK AND SMELLED OF ANTIFREEZE. PULLED THE DIPSTICK AND THE OIL WAS BROWN AND SEPARATED. GOT IT HAULED HOME. DID AN INSPECTION AND ANTIFREEZE WAS ALL DOWN THE BLOCK. TOOK THE MOTOR APART AND THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET WAS JUST DETROYED. CHEVROLET HAS HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS OUT OF THESE 3.4 GEN 3 MOTORS. THEY ALL NEED TO BE RECALLED AND THE PROBLEM CORRECTED. DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU KEEP THE COOLANT FLUSHED AND OIL CHANGED. HEAD GASKETS WERE IN THE SAME SHAPE I CHANGED THEM TOO. ALL TOGETHER COST ME OVER $1000 BETWEEN GASKET KITS, HEAD BOLTS, INTAKE BOLTS, COOLANT, OIL, FILTER, FLUSH, AND THAT WAS CHANGING THE HEAD GASKET, LOWER AND UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET COMPLETELY BY MYSELF. THESE MOTORS ARE SO HARD TO WORK ON, I JUST COULDN'T AFFORD TO HAVE SOMEONE DO IT FOR ME. IT'S JUST BAD TO BUY A VEHICLE AND HAVE THIS PROBLEM. MOST VENTURE OWNERS HAVE CHANGED HEAD GASKETS OR INTAKE GASKETS MORE THAN ONCE. TOYOTA RECALLED THEIR 3.0 MOTORS FOR THIS PROBLEM, WHY IS GM NOT MADE TO RECTIFY THIS CONTINUOUS PROBLEM. THE VAN HAS ALOT OF OTHER PROBLEMS AS WELL, BODY RUST, HEADLIGHTS YOU CANNOT SEE WITH, OIL SEAL LEAKS, STEERING KNUCKLE PROBLEMS, SLIDING DOOR ISSUES, RADIO PROBLEMS, ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, SIGNAL LIGHTS, ABS PROBLEMS. Over the last 25 years, I have owned 5 GM cars and have generally been satisfied with them. However, the Venture has presented me with some issues that I have never experienced before. Unfortunately, the head gasket issue on the 3.1L engine (costing almost $600) and the recent A/C failure (costing $600-$800) seem to be common problems with this van. These two issues are major servicing concerns that I did not expect from a GM product. Despite this, I remain confident in GM's ability to produce quality vehicles and will continue to consider them in the future.

Our Venture has been our trusty weekend and family road trip vehicle for over 9 years and 58K miles. We have no regrets about choosing the Silver WBE Venture, even though we've had some minor issues along the way. Thankfully, most of these were fixed under the original GM warranty, including the leaking intake manifold. Although the roof still leaks occasionally at the overhead trip computer/compass, it's not a major issue. We did have it fixed by the dealer under warranty, but it seems to have occurred again lately. One of the rear power windows doesn't open fully, but it's not a big deal. We plan to replace 3 of the original FR 680 Firestone tires at 70K. Overall, the paint and finish still look like new, and the Venture still drives and handles great.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my no frills van. I've owned it for 5 years now and it has been an incredibly reliable vehicle. With 160K miles on it, I've only had to replace the tires and tie rod ends last year. Although the AC stopped working this summer and I need to replace the ball joints, it still runs like a new car. It may not have many power options, but it's the most dependable vehicle I've ever had, even though I've always driven imports before. I really wish Chevy still made this vehicle!

Hi there! I bought my 2004 Venture in 2008, used. It has been a great ride so far, with good gas mileage and plenty of room. However, I have started to experience some issues lately. The air conditioning went out at 100,000 miles, and the panels below the doors are rusting out badly, with the paint peeling off. I am also having trouble with the driver side window. Despite these issues, I have managed to keep it running well with routine repairs, such as brakes. Overall, it has been a really reliable van, and I will be sad to let it go.

This is a great vehicle overall! Our family absolutely loves the VCR entertainment system. It pulls away smoothly from a stop and has excellent passing power. Although it can be a bit noisy inside, it's still a great ride. The seats are comfortable, but the second row can feel a little cramped due to the car's dark interior and narrow dimensions. The only thing that is truly disappointing is the IIHS crash test rating, which was the poorest they have ever tested. This alone has motivated us to get a new car.

You made a great choice in purchasing this vehicle! After owning a 2000 model and doing considerable research, it's clear that this vehicle offers good mileage and great value for the money. I looked at newer SUVs and Vans, but discovered that this model offers as good or better mileage, and just as much interior space for a lot less than new. In fact, the mileage for the first 5000 miles has averaged an impressive 23-27 MPG if driven reasonably.

I've read the reviews on this vehicle and many mirrored our own experience! Although we have experienced an above-average amount of repairs on our 98 Venture, including a near-fatal water pump failure that almost doomed the car, it's still going at the 85K mark. Having owned a good mixture of foreign-made and domestic cars, this one is low on the quality.

The vehicle's electrical system has been causing persistent issues, which I have traced back to the rear tail light assembly. It appears that the assembly was not put together correctly at the factory, resulting in water leakage. Despite multiple visits to the Chevy dealer for repairs, the various electrical subsystems continued to malfunction. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the brake lights were the root cause of the problem, as evidenced by a warning ticket. After disassembling the brakes, I found evidence of water and corrosion damage. Rest assured, I have taken the necessary steps to rectify the issue and ensure that it does not happen again.

This venture is not up to the mark. Despite being fully equipped, the van has several issues such as malfunctioning power door locks, windows getting stuck, non-functional rear parking aid, DVD system, and power sliding doors. Additionally, the van has only half leather and cloth seats, a cheap-looking dashboard, and unattractive 16' wheels. Unfortunately, my van has been in the shop 13 times and is going back again as it doesn't even turn on. It is frustrating to have a fully equipped car with nothing working.
