1991 Chevrolet Van problems

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1991 Chevrolet Van problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Astro Van 1991, here are some common problems associated with this vehicle:

  1. Coolant Leaks or Oil Leaks From Intake Manifold Gaskets:
    • Owners have reported issues with coolant or oil leaks stemming from the intake manifold gaskets. This problem can lead to engine overheating and potential damage if not addressed promptly.
  2. Broken Door Handles:
    • Another prevalent problem is the breakage of door handles, both indoor and outdoor. This issue typically occurs after around 140,000 miles, causing inconvenience and requiring replacement rather than repair.
  3. Idling Problems:
    • Some owners have experienced idling problems, including higher-than-normal engine idle and even engine shutdown during idling. This issue is often linked to a vacuum leak in the throttle body gasket, necessitating gasket replacement to resolve the problem.
  4. Abnormal Noise From the Front or Rear Differential:
    • At approximately 165,000 miles, drivers may notice abnormal noises like clunking, banging, or grinding from the front or rear differential. This issue is commonly caused by worn bearings and may require a full rebuild of the affected differential to rectify.
  5. Alternator Failure:
    • Alternator failure has been reported in older models, leading to battery drainage and potential abnormal noises. Replacement of the alternator is necessary to address this issue, typically costing around $300 to $400.
  6. Internal Distributor Faults:
    • While less common, internal faults in the distributor have been noted by some drivers. Symptoms may include a squealing noise, rough engine running, or stalling. Overhauling or replacing the internal distributor is the recommended solution to this problem.

These issues highlight some of the common challenges faced by owners of the Chevrolet Astro Van 1991, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of trouble to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
