Chevrolet Van problems

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common Chevrolet Van problems

Common Problems with Chevrolet Van Cars

Chevrolet van cars are known for their versatility and reliability, but like any other vehicle, they can experience problems. Here are some of the most common issues that Chevrolet van owners have reported:

  1. Transmission Failure

One of the most common problems with Chevrolet van cars is transmission failure. This problem has been reported in various models, including the Impala, Equinox, Colorado, and Express 1500. The symptoms of transmission failure include difficulty shifting gears, slipping, and jerking. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair.

  1. Power Lock Malfunction

Power lock malfunction is another common problem with Chevrolet van cars. This issue has been reported in the Impala, and it can cause the doors to lock or unlock unexpectedly. In some cases, the power locks may not work at all, which can be a safety concern.

  1. Heater Issues

Heater issues have been reported in various Chevrolet van models, including the Impala. This problem can cause the heater to blow cold air or not work at all. In some cases, the issue may be caused by a faulty heater core or a blown fuse.

  1. Excessive Oil Consumption

Excessive oil consumption is a common problem with Chevrolet van cars, particularly in the Equinox. This issue can cause the engine to run low on oil, which can lead to engine damage. In some cases, the problem may be caused by worn piston rings or valve guides.

  1. Fuel Pump Failure

Fuel pump failure has been reported in various Chevrolet van models, including the Blazer. This problem can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. In some cases, the fuel pump may need to be replaced, which can be a costly repair.

  1. Power Steering Malfunction

Power steering malfunction is a common problem with Chevrolet van cars, particularly in the Malibu. This issue can cause the steering to become difficult or impossible to turn. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty power steering pump or a leaking power steering hose.

  1. Air Conditioning Issues

Air conditioning issues have been reported in various Chevrolet van models, including the Impala and Equinox. This problem can cause the air conditioning to blow warm air or not work at all. In some cases, the issue may be caused by a faulty compressor or a refrigerant leak.

  1. Engine Misfire

Engine misfire is a common problem with Chevrolet van cars, particularly in the Colorado. This issue can cause the engine to run rough or stall. In some cases, the problem may be caused by faulty spark plugs or ignition coils.

  1. Loss of Power Steering

Loss of power steering is a common problem with Chevrolet van cars, particularly in the Blazer. This issue can cause the steering to become difficult or impossible to turn. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty power steering pump or a leaking power steering hose.

  1. Key Stuck in Ignition

Key stuck in ignition is a common problem with Chevrolet van cars, particularly in the Colorado. This issue can cause the key to become stuck in the ignition, which can be a safety concern. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a worn ignition tumbler.

In conclusion, while Chevrolet van cars are known for their reliability, they can still experience common problems. These issues include transmission failure, power lock malfunction, heater issues, excessive oil consumption, fuel pump failure, power steering malfunction, air conditioning issues, engine misfire, loss of power steering, and key stuck in ignition. If you experience any of these issues, it is important to have your vehicle inspected and repaired by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

WHEN I TAKE OFF, I'M NOT SURE WHETHER IT'S GOING TO GO OR CUT OFF (SORTA LIKE YOU MAYBE GETTING READY TO RUN OUT OF GAS)CLOSE TO SEVERAL ACCIDENTS. IF THIS VEHICLE CUTS OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF CROSSING ROADS/4 LANES, THIS COULD BE FATAL. IT'S LIKE THIS PROBLEM COMES AND GOES, YOU NEVER KNOW. SOUNDS AND ACTS LIKE SOMETHING IS CLOGGED UP OR STICKS CAUSING LOSS OF ENGINE VACCUM. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT LOOKED AT ANYTIME SOON. ALSO, SCARED TO GO OUT AT NIGHT WITH NOT KNOWING WHAT COULD HAPPEN. *TR
Chevrolet Van 2002
  • Date Of Incident: 2007-03-26
  • Date Complaint: 2007-04-10
  • VIN: 1GNDV03E72D
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I OWN A 2002 CHEVROLET VENTURE AWD. RECENTLY, I NOTICED AN OILY SUBSTANCE COMING FROM THE RIGHT, PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VAN. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I DISCOVERED THAT THE OIL WAS COMING FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER (A/C ) CONDENSER, DETERMINING THAT THE AIR CONDITIONER DID NOT WORK. IT WORKED FINE UNTIL THIS TIME. I CALLED REPAIR SHOPS, AND FOUND OUT THAT THE REPLACEMENT A/C CONDENSER WAS DESIGNED A LITTLE DIFFERENT, AND/OR THE WAY OF MOUNTING IT HAS BEEN UPGRADED. ALSO, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS WAS COMMON ON THE PONTIAC MONTANA VANS. THE COST TO FIX IT WAS ANYWHERE FROM $975.00 TO $1175.00. NOW, IF THIS WAS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN, AND IT' WAS ILLEGAL TO VENT R-134A FREON INTO THE AIR, WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN ADDRESSED?*AK
Chevrolet Van 2001
  • Date Of Incident: 2007-02-01
  • Date Complaint: 2007-04-04
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: OUR 2001 CHEVROLET VENTURE ONLY HAS 78,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FROM ABOUT THE TIME WE PURCHASED IT. IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS , FEBRUARY/MARCH 2007 WE HAVE PUT $5000 INTO OUR VAN. WE REPLACED THE INTAKE GASKET FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE FIRST ONE WAS DONE BY THE DEALER, VERY POOR JOB. WE HAD NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OFF WHILE DRIVING AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, ON AND OFF. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. WE THEN TOOK IT AGAIN OFF WARRANTY AND THEY STILL COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. AS TIME PASSED, IT BEGUN TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN AND BECOME A PROBLEM. I BECAME A NERVOUS WRECK WHILE DRIVING, HOPING AND PRAYING IT WOULD MAKE IT TO EACH DESTINATION. IN FEBRUARY 2007 IT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES TO AND FROM WORK AND THIS ONE WAS THE LAST STRAW, IT STALLED ON THE FREEWAY WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH AND BLOCKED TRAFFIC. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO GET THE JOB DONE. THE DEALER IS COMPLETELY USELESS. IN ADDITION TO MY PROBLEM, THE LIGHT PANELS MELTED IN THE REAR LIGHTS, THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH BURNED OUT, THE FUSE BOX WAS SHORTED OUT, THE DEALER INSTALLED ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY AND ALSO SHUT OUR SYSTEM DOWN, HAD TO HAVE REMOVED. REAR AC BLOWER HAD TO BE REPLACED, NOW THE AC SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK AT ALL, NEEDS NEW CONDENSER. LIGHTS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL FLICKERED DUE TO ALTERNATOR GOING OUT, HAD TO HAVE ALTERNATOR REPLACED. WE WILL NEVER BUY A CHEVROLET AGAIN... UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE HAD A VERY BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THE DEALER; COINCIDENTALLY, COULD NEVER FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. *AK
