2002 Chevrolet Tracker problems
The Chevrolet Tracker, formerly the Geo Tracker, is a mini SUV produced for Chevrolet and Geo by CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario. Although appearing as a compact SUV, the Tracker was actually certified as a light truck due to its off-road capabilities and body on frame construction. The Tracker was produced under many brands in several different editions and in many countries.
First generation
The Geo Tracker was a mini SUV introduced in late 1988 as a 1989 model. It was developed by CAMI which was a joint venture between General Motors of Canada and Suzuki. North American models were to be built in CAMI's Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada plant alongside its almost identical twin, the domestic-built Suzuki Sidekick (Escudo). Nearly all 1989 and some 1990 Trackers were built in Japan and imported to the US because of delays at the CAMI factory in Canada. In late 1989, production began in Ingersoll with about 6,100 Geo Trackers finished, with annual production projected to be around 200,000 units. In the beginning, all Canadian-made Trackers were sent to the United States to circumvent the 25 percent Chicken Tax; the Canadian market was supplied entirely from Japan. Suzuki Sidekicks were added to the production line during 1990.
The Tracker was originally powered by Suzuki's 1.6L SOHC four-cylinder engine producing 80 hp (60 kW). The trim levels in 1989 were base convertible, base two-door hardtop, two-door XL bed, and LSi hardtop. LSi equipment included air conditioner, chrome rally wheels, intermittent wipers, rear window wiper/washer, spare tire cover, three-speed GM Turbo-Hydramatic 180 automatic transmission, tinted glass, and special red/black front and rear bucket seats. In 1990 the LSi trim was made available on the convertible models also. All Trackers were four-wheel drive until a base two-wheel drive convertible was introduced in 1992. The two-door hardtop models were available until 1995 when they were discontinued to make way for the four-door hardtop wagon that was to be introduced the following year. The two-door XL bed was a North America only edition which came with four more inches in the rear and a sealed two door cab. Although Suzuki started importing four-door Sidekicks in 1991, CAMI did not start producing them until the 1996 model year, when America got a four-door Geo Tracker, now powered by Suzuki's G16B 16-valve 1.6L boasting 96 hp (72 kW). In 1997, the Geo nameplate was merged back into Chevrolet and all Geo models, including the Tracker, Tracker XL, and all subsequent editions were rebadged as Chevrolet in 1998.
The Tracker was different from most other light SUVs on the market in that it is based on a rugged light-truck chassis and certified as a light truck. Although it appeared to be a comfortable passenger SUV, it was bolstered by a sturdy off-road four-wheel-drive system with a conventional light truck engine and transmission coupled to a hi-lo, 2-4 transfer case. The Tracker had a strong front suspension with a rugged recirculating ball steering box. The conventional front differential was rigidly mounted ahead of the engine, with CV axles connecting the coil-spring front hubs to the differential case. The rear axle was a conventional light truck unit on coil springs. As a result of the truck-like underpinnings, the Tracker had a fairly truck-like ride, but the benefit was its notable durability in harsh conditions.
The production of the first-generation model of the Tracker (and Sidekick) came to an end in Ontario after 1998 in order to make way for the second generation of Tracker/Vitara. However, the first generation Sidekick continued in production in other countries until 2004.

Common 2002 Chevrolet Tracker problems
The Chevrolet Tracker, produced between 1999 and 2004, is a compact SUV known for its versatility and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common issues that owners should be aware of. This article will focus on the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker and its most frequently reported problems.
One of the most prevalent issues with the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker is engine problems, particularly with the 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The timing chain or belt in this engine has been known to cause issues, leading to poor engine performance or even engine failure.
Transmission issues are another common problem with the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker. Automatic transmissions may experience slipping or shifting problems, while manual transmissions can have difficulty shifting or grinding gears.
Electrical problems are also prevalent in the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker. Issues with the battery or alternator can cause starting problems or electrical system malfunctions. Power windows or locks may stop working or become slow to respond.
Suspension and steering problems are also common with the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker. Struts or shocks may cause a bumpy ride or poor handling, while steering issues such as difficulty turning or a loose steering wheel can occur.
Fuel system problems are another issue that some 2002 Chevrolet Tracker owners have reported. Fuel pump or fuel filter issues can cause fuel delivery problems and affect engine performance.
In summary, while the 2002 Chevrolet Tracker has some common issues, it is still a reliable and versatile SUV. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help keep the Tracker running smoothly for many years.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 2CNBJ13C326
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: MY CHEVY TRACKER HAS A BROKEN CROSSMEMBER/SUBFRAME/K-FRAME. FRONT SUSPENSION ARMS ARE MOUNTED TO THIS PIECE, IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOUNTING POINT. IT COMPLETELY BROKE WHILE DRIVING, LUCKILY AT A VERY SLOW SPEED, NO MAJ. INJURY. GM KNOWS THE BAD PART WAS IN EVERY TRACKER/VITARA -THEY SAY IT WASN'T TREATED PROPERLY, HAD NO DRAIN HOLES. THERE IS A BULLETIN TO REPLACE THIS PART (#06186),10 YEARS OR 150K MILES -WHICH SPECIFIES THE REPAIR IS COVERED IF "DISPLAYS THE CONDITION OF" HAVING THE DEFECT WITHIN THAT PERIOD. FULLER GM DEALER AGREES "CLEARLY HAD THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE PERIOD BASED UPON CONDITION NOW". I'VE SUFFERED THE RUN-AROUND BETWEEN SR REP ON THE PHONE, AND THE LOCAL GM DEALER. ALL SAY "WOULD REPAIR IT IF THE OTHER WOULD". GM BY PHONE SAYS IT'S UP TO THE LOCAL, LOCAL SAYS GM HAS TO AUTHORIZE REPAIR. THEY ALL UNIV. AGREED WITH FACTS: HAD THE PROBLEM WITHIN THE BULLETIN'S DEFINITION, YET INSIST THERE'S NO WAY FOR THEM TO HELP, "THE PERIOD IS UP" -WHICH IS A CONTRADICTION! THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FAILURE, FAR WORSE THAN THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL. IN THOSE CASES, THE CAR CAN STILL FUNCTION WITH AN AWARE DRIVER. THE TRACKER FAILURE IS CATASTROPHIC. GM SAYS BULLETIN NOTICE MAILED OUT TOLD OWNERS TO CHECK FOR THE "SIGNS" EVERY YEAR, BUT ONLY SENT OUT ONE NOTICE -NOT TO THE NEXT OWNERS (MOST MANUFS SEND NOTICES FOR NEW OWNERS)! OWNER OF MY CAR WHO MAYBE SAW THE NOTICE DIED, SO WE HAD NO WARNING TO CHECK FOR "SIGNS". EVERY GM REP SAYS THAT'S THEIR "REGRETTABLE POLICY". GM AND LOCAL FULLER GM HAVE WASTED MANY HOURS/WEEKS OF TIME, DIRECTING RESPONSE. TO ALL OTHERS, SAYING WILL HELP AND CALL BACK, NOT ONE HAS. GM SAYS "THERE'S NO RECALL BECAUSE IT WASN'T A POPULAR VEHICLE"*! I OFFERED TO PAY FOR PART, OR WORK, MEET HALFWAY, THEY DID NOT EVEN CONSIDER. I WANT MINE REPAIRED +GM TO ADMIT RESPONSIBILITY. PLEASE HELP, THANKS! *ALL QUOTES ACTUALLY SAID BY GM. *TR

HE SPED UP IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND GAVE ME A HAND SIGNAL TO PULL OVER. I EXITED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND PARKED THE TRUCK. I WENT IN THE BACK AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING BIZARRE, BUT STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE OLD MAN SAW. I WENT BACK IN THE TRUCK AND PUT IT IN REVERSE AND FELT THE TRUCK HESITATING WHILE BACKING UP, NOW I PUT IT IN DRIVE, SAMETHING TRUCK HESITATING. I TURNED THE TRUCK OFF AND OPENED THE HOOD AND ALL I SAW WERE FLAMES ALL OVER THE ENGINE, AIR INTAKE, AROUND THE BATTERY AND ESPECIALLY AROUND THE DIPSTICK FOR THE TRANSMISSION. WITHIN 15 MINUTES MY WHOLE TRUCK THAT I PUT 2 AND A HALF YEARS WORTH FIREMEN TOOK 25 MINUTES AT LEAST, WHILE THE COPS CAME IN 10 MIN. BY THE TIME THE COPS CAME THE TRUCK WAS ALREADY HALF BURNT. MY GIRLFRIEND WAS WITH ME GOING CRAZY. ITS GONE, ALL GONE. REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION, CHANGED RACK AND PINION, CHANGE EXHAUST LINE COMPLETE FROM FRONT FLEX PIPE RIGHT TO THE REAR TAIL PIPE, FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION COMPLETELY CHANGED, BUILT IN AN IPHONE CHARGER AND THIS IS WHAT I GET, TO FIND OUT 2 WEEKS BEFORE CHRISTMAS THAT THIS TRUCK IS OVERLOADED WITH RECALLS DUE TO BAD GAS FILTER FITTING, AND SHORT CIRCUIT IN DRIVERSIDE DOOR. - Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ALL OF A SUDDEN EVERY TIME I PRESSED THE BRAKES MY TRACKER VEERED TO THE RIGHT INTO THE OTHER LAND AND STARTED TO SHAKE TREMENDOUSLY. I COULD NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH OUT IT CONSTANTLY SHAKING. I HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THE VEHICLE SUSPENSION CROSS MEMBER BAR HAD ROTTED OUT AND WAS COMPLETELY FULL OF RUST. AFTER A FULL INSPECTION I WAS TOLD FROM THE MECHANIC THAT MY CAR IS MECHANICALLY SOUND AND THERE IS NO OTHER RUST ANYWHERE IN THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME ABOUT A RECALL WITH THIS PART. MY 2002 CHEVY TRACKER HAS JUST OVER 85000 MILES . I CONTACTED THE GM DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID BECAUSE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED IN 2012 THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO EVEN THOUGH IT WAS WELL UNDER THE MILEAGE LIMITS. I RECENTLY INHERITED THIS VEHICLE FROM MY MOTHER IN-LAW WHO WAS VERY SICK WITH CANCER. SHE DID NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE SINCE JANUARY OF 2012 DUE TO HER BEING EXTREMELY SICK. I HAVE ALL THE DOCUMENTS OF HER VEHICLE AND ALL HER PAPERWORK. SHE NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THIS PART. I DON'T WANT GM. TO FIX THIS SINCE I HAVE MY OWN MECHANIC BUT FEEL THEY SHOULD WARRANTY THE PART. WHEN I CONTACTED THEM THEY SAID THERE IS NO RECALL ON THE PART JUST A EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY WERE OFFERING. AFTER LOOKING AT YOUR WEBSITE I SEE THAT THERE MOST DEFIANTLY WAS A RECALL AND THIS VEHICLE NEVER GOT FIXED . I CANT SAY WHETHER THE RECALL LETTER GOT LOST IN THE MAIL OR WAS NEVER SENT. THEY SAID THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION DOES RECALL NOT THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WAS NO RECALL THEY WERE JUST OFFERING AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. I JUST WANT CHEVROLET TO STEP UP TO THEIR END OF THE BARGAIN. THANK YOU *TR

- Summary: AFTER A YEAR OF REPAIRS INCLUDING MUFFLER SYSTEM, FRONT SWAY BAR, SHIFTER CABLE AND ALTERNATOR, I FINALLY GOT TO DRIVE MY CHEVY TRACKER AND NOTICED IMMEDIATELY A SHAKE (4/12) THAT NIGHT, THE OIL PAN DEVELOPED A LEAK. THOUGHT THE CALIPERS NEEDED TO BE BLED SO BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE SHOP. MY REPAIRMAN NOTICED THAT THE FRONT ARM SUSPENSION BRACKET WAS RUSTED THROUGH. DID A LITTLE INVESTIGATION ON LINE AND DISCOVERED THE SPECIAL WARRANTY FROM CHEVY REGARDING THIS PROBLEM AND MANY MANY COMPLAINTS FROM FELLOW CUSTOMERS. I CALLED CHEVY ON 3/14/13 AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER DIDN'T MATCH THE RECALL. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VIN NUMBER DID MATCH THE RECALL, BUT I WAS LATE BECAUSE THE RECALL EXPIRED IN 2012. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY I WASN'T NOTIFIED AS THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND CHEVY WAS WELL AWARE. HAD I KNOWN, I WOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IT RIGHT AWAY. *TR

TOOK CAR TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO REQUEST INSPECTION AND REPAIR OF THE VIBRATING BRAKES WITH A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND REQUESTED AN INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE DUE TO ENGINE CUTOFF DURING IDLING WHILE BRAKING AT A STOPLIGHT. This is a fantastic small car! It's so easy to drive and park, and surprisingly comfortable for a vehicle on a truck frame. I know I'll be sad to give it up someday, as it's one of the last truly affordable small SUVs.

The ZR2 is small enough to fit in the small 4th spot in my garage. Although the back seat may be too small for most adults, it folds flat providing ample space for your belongings. The REAL 4WD with high/low range is a great feature. Additionally, it is fairly quiet on the road without any engine buzz. The body on frame construction is also a plus. However, the best thing about it is the 4WD, which can be shifted on the fly. With good tires, it'll go through most any blizzard and come out smiling!

I bought this car because I wanted something versatile and suited to outdoor adventures, but which would also be practical for city driving -- that is exactly what this car is. The Tracker proved itself to be tough and well-built, and I took it offroading in the Northern California wilderness and in Death Valley several times. The short wheel base lets it go almost anywhere, which is great! Unfortunately, the short wheel base is also the most negative aspect of the car. It was very squirrely on the freeway and I spun out a few times on wet or snowy roads. When I blew out a tire on I5, the car spun out of control and was totaled. However, I must say that the squirrely-ness of the car is my only complaint - no mechanical problems.

I'm so glad to hear that you found a great deal on a fully loaded lease return! It sounds like it was the perfect vehicle for your needs, especially with its four wheel drive and good traction. Plus, it's great to hear that it's not a gas guzzler like some other SUVs out there. It's clear that you really love your new vehicle, and I'm happy for you!

I love this little SUV! I purchased it 2 years ago and have had zero issues, except for daily wear and tear. The 4WD works well, although the turning radius leaves something to be desired. I've driven in several snow storms with no issues. Parking is excellent, especially in city driving where the Tracker's higher profile and compact size make parallel parking a breeze. This is an excellent little workhorse for a mother with one or two children and perfect for a college student in a snowy climate. It is dependable, fun to drive, and safe to drive due to its higher profile when driving on a highway and its 4WD capability.

Your Chevy Tracker 4door, 2.0L automatic 4x4 sounds like a great car for city driving! It has a nice ground clearance that can handle speed bumps and potholes with ease. However, I understand that you have some concerns about its performance on gravel/snow and at highway speeds. It's important to always drive safely and be aware of the limitations of your vehicle. On the bright side, it has sufficient headroom and is easy to park. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your Chevy Tracker!

My ownership experience with this vehicle has been extremely disappointing. The car is under-powered and has very little value. After having it appraised, I found that it has lost a significant amount of its value, making it impossible to trade in. Unfortunately, I owe $8,000 more than the car is currently worth. This experience with the Suzuki... umm Chevrolet Tracker has been a letdown.

Since purchasing my new Tracker, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues. Within the first year of ownership, I had to deal with three oil leaks, a faulty gas pump, a brake light malfunction, a loose suspension bolt, and a coolant leak. Despite my initial expectations, these problems have been a significant inconvenience. However, I am pleased to report that the dealership has offered to buy back the car and refund all of my payments with the assistance of the BBB. This resolution demonstrates their commitment to customer satisfaction and I am confident that they will continue to provide excellent service in the future.

I purchased this car in 2002 after my lease of my alero ran out. Unfortunately, I have had a negative experience with it. The wind tends to move the car all over the road, especially during the winter. I have had a few close calls with semi-trucks gusts of wind blowing me over. However, I am excited to be getting an '05 Equinox LT fully loaded in a couple of weeks, which I had to special order from Chevrolet. I am looking forward to driving my new car and leaving this experience behind. I would not recommend this car to others.
