2021 Ford Bronco sport problems
The Ford Bronco Sport is a compact crossover SUV sold by Ford Motor Company and marketed under the Ford Bronco nameplate. It was released alongside the sixth generation Bronco body-on-frame SUV, featuring a similar retro and off-road styling in a smaller footprint. The vehicle is based on the front-wheel drive-based, unibody C2 platform, which is also used by the Ford Escape crossover and Maverick pickup.
Powertrain
Engine
The Bronco Sport has two engine options. The base engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter Ecoboost I3 engine producing 181 hp (184 PS; 135 kW) at 6,000 rpm, and 190 lb⋅ft (260 N⋅m; 26 kg⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. It is also available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecoboost I4 engine producing 245 hp (248 PS; 183 kW) at 6,000 rpm, and 275 lb⋅ft (373 N⋅m; 38.0 kg⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
4x4 drive system
The Bronco Sport comes equipped with an all-wheel drive system with "G.O.A.T. Modes" (Goes Over Any Terrain). The G.O.A.T. modes allow the driver to select different terrains for the 4x4 system. The Bronco Sport has four-wheel independent suspension. Only the Badlands model has a twin-clutch rear differential that can act as a rear differential locker based on the GK drive system used in the Focus RS, and has torque vectoring. Unlike the Bronco, the Bronco Sport does not have a low-range transfer case. Instead of having traditional front bump stops, the Badlands model Bronco Sport has hydraulic bump stops. The Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks models share the same AWD system as the Escape, with proprietary programming for off-road use. The Bronco Sport has the tow capability of 2,000–2,200 lb (907–998 kg) depending on the engine.

Common 2021 Ford Bronco sport problems
The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of the issues:
- Fuel Leaks: There have been numerous reports of fuel leaks in the Bronco Sport. A recall was issued in August 2021 (21V625000) due to a fuel leak that could cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Paint Chipping: The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is prone to paint chipping, which can lead to corrosion and serious paint quality issues. It is not yet clear if this problem is specific to the 2021 model or if it affects other model years as well.
- 4WD Overheating: The Bronco Sport's 4WD system has been reported to overheat during off-road use, which can lead to a loss of power and potential damage to the system. This issue is more common in models equipped with the 1.5-liter engine.
- Engine Issues: The Bronco Sport's engine has been reported to have several issues, including rattling noises caused by low-grade fuel or oil leaks that could potentially set the engine on fire. Some owners have reported that the engine has failed to turn on, even after Ford replaced the entire engine under warranty twice.
- Suspension Problems: The Bronco Sport has been recalled twice due to suspension problems. The first recall (21V075000) was due to missing or loose rear suspension bolts that could cause the suspension system to fail. The second recall (21V074000) was due to incorrect front lower control arms being used, causing the car to rattle and potentially leading to a loss of control.
- Brake-related Problems: The Bronco Sport has had issues with its brakes, including a recall (21V922000) due to a severe lack of braking power. Some owners have reported a "whale noise" from the rear brakes when operating the vehicle in reverse, which can be embarrassing and difficult to diagnose.
These issues have contributed to a "spotty" reliability record for the Ford Bronco Sport, with many owners reporting problems and delays in obtaining replacement parts.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
- VIN: 3FMCR9B67MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Leff than 6 months after purchasing this vehicle new I have had a problem when I'm turning right or left with a rubbing/grinding noise in the rear. I have complained about it to the dealership where I was getting my oil changed and they brushed it off saying they don't hear it or it could just be the wind lol. I ended up taking it to another dealership in 2023 (Oxmoor Ford) where they heard it and diagnosed it as my rear differential and after they had my car for 3+ weeks I was told there wasn't a fix and they would just change out the fluid and replace it with new fluid and would let me know when there was a fix. In October 2024 I call and ask about this fix because I never heard anything else from them and they have me bring it in just to reset the modules. Still no fix on rear differential with so many complaints about it from several Bronco owners.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
- VIN: 3FMCR9B64MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My car was stopped at a red light and when I hit the gas to go my entire car shut off. I was not able to turn my hazards on or put my car in neutral to push my car out of traffic. This is a huge safety concern because a car could’ve rear ended me since I wasn’t able to put hazards on. I attempted to jumpstart the vehicle but that didn’t work. I had to get my car towed and sent to the dealership. The issue sounds like the recall notice 24S24 - however my bronco sport says I don’t have any recalls. After talking to other bronco sport owners who had similar issues, they said they had to pay several hundred dollars to replace the battery with an AGM battery because the bronco sport isn't equipped to handle all the electronics.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- VIN: 3FMCR9B66MR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My car made a loud pop noise when I go to turn it over. Then it was just dead others tried to jump it, but it wasn’t getting enough juice. Along with this all the warning signals start flashing through on the dash before basically dying. There had been warning at all early I had been driving around just fine. When we finally get to the dealership they say it was just the battery. We replace the battery but I see that other 2021 bronco sport’s had battery recall issues they said, mine didn’t fall under the date when the bad ones were produced. Still I think they should look at other dates, since they might have been over looked or on the cusps of the dates between the bad batteries and the good batteries.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
- VIN: 3FMCR9C66MR
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: When turning at low speeds like a drive-thru or in a parking lot, the vehicle makes a skipping or grabbing sound and pulls/lurches slightly until the wheels are straightened. Recommended fix was replacing a front differential ventilation hose, which is not covered by bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranty, and not a guarantee to fix the issue.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- VIN: 3FMCR9C66MR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When I back out of driveway or any parking space, the brakes make a loud moaning noise along with what is almost a grinding noise. It does not matter the time of day, the temperature, or humidity. The car makes the noise every time it is used. This has been an ongoing issue since owning the car in 2021, and it has been to the dealership on three occasions to have the issue looked at. The brakes and brake pads look good and nothing else is visibly wrong. This has been an ongoing issue since shortly after purchase in 2021.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 3FMCR9A66MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My transmission is slipping and the vehicle is sputtering at take off. There is a burning smell from the engine of my Bronco Sport. I have seen recall issues on other 2021 Ford Bronco Sports but my VIN is not included. It says that Ford issued for 2021-2024 Bronco Sport for transmission issues. Stating that the transmission park system may have been damaged during assembly. Dealer is saying I need new torque and valve body. Other Bronco Sport customers are also reporting the same issue on Bronco Forum. This vehicle is needed for transportation to and from work for my son.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 3FMCR9A6XMR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The contact stated that while driving 55 MPH, the engine started overheating. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the water pump and the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 3FMCR9D9XMR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While waiting in the drop off line at school the Bronco suddenly shut off and would not restart. The dash lights, AC controls, radio, etc all shut off as if the entire electrical system shut down. The orange pull strap used to put the vehicle in neutral did not work as the electrical shutdown seemed to have locked up the brakes. Fortunately since it happened in a school zone traffic was slow moving and we did not have to worry about getting hit. Unfortunately, the vehicle was stuck in the middle of the road an unmovable until a tow truck came. After some quick research I've seen that this is a fairly common occurrence in the 2021 Bronco Sport. I used the Ford site to check the VIN but supposedly my vehicle was not affected by any recalls. Seems more than a coincidence that I have experienced exactly what others describe yet I'm unaffected by any recalls. I am now extremely concerned to have my wife and children in a car that could potentially shut off at any time and lock up the brakes. If this were to have happened on the highway who knows how many people may have been injured or killed. Prior to the incident there were no warnings, no warning notifications, nothing. Currently the vehicle is at the dealership who is charging a premium to diagnose the issue and replace the battery.
SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: 3FMCR9C64MR
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: Currently at 30,000 miles. Water pump goes out every 10k miles, rear differential went out, front control arm and strut went out.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: 3FMCR9C67MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I've had 3 water pumps replaced first one was right before 36,000 miles, 2 were after the bumper to bumper warranty. Had the rear drive unit replaced for grinding, that was at about 28k miles, torque converter was also replaced at about 35k miles, oil leak from my camshaft carrier gasket, thermostat housing split, battery replaced after a year. This vehicle has been nothing but issue after issue. Each time low coolant, no heat in the vehicle. No warning lamps, nothing to tell me it was low.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- VIN: 3FMCR9B65MR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My 2021 Bronco Sport has had its water pump replaced 3 times and today I discovered the one put on in July 2024 is failing again. Each time it starts to fail there are no warning lights for low coolant. If your not actually checking the coolant reservoir under to hood consumers have no idea the water pump is leaking and failing until it's possibly too late and your vehicle overheats possibly causing more issues. This is a known issue by Ford, but no recall has been issued nor have these faulty water pumps been redesigned or updated to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, you see no coolant drippings where you park due to the fabric skid plate that covered underneath absorbing the coolant as it leaks out.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-07-25
- VIN: 3FMCR9D9XMR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in reverse(R) and reversing at approximately 3 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed, and the rear brakes were making an abnormally loud screeching sound. The contact was able to stop the vehicle, but the noise was abnormally loud. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was constant. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where the rear brakes were found to be operating normally. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 35,563.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: 3FMCR9A6XMR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact's girlfriend owns a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The contact stated while the driver was driving at various speeds and making sharp turns, the rear end of the vehicle seized and made an abnormal popping sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the rear end of the vehicle needed to be replaced. The dealer charged a repair fee. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3FMCR9B6XMR
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Since the purchase of the Bronco Sport in 2021, I have intermittently taken it in for required service. However, there have been times when I have had to take it in for hearing noise coming from when I make turns, and it sounded like my break pads were making the sound of wear. A recent report did address the break pad concern, and they were replaced. Intuitively something told me to check my fluid levels and the engine air filter, along with the cabin air filter. They both needed replacing, which I did on my own. The mechanic who put on my break asked me questions about the Bronco, I explained to him that I was having issues with take off, and have had to take it in for recalls since make the purchase. He asked me to open the hood. What he found was oil leaking around was oil leaking around my turbo. I was shocked. Because it had not been long since it was serviced. I was told to not drive it too far because there were reports of some Broncos catching on fire. When I would take it in to Town AND Country Ford, where it was purchased, they would tell me that they could not find anything wrong repeatedly, supposedly one of the recalls was fixed. Yet, I still hear the noise when I make turns. Another Ford dealership around the corner from where I live and I decided to take it there to see if I could get different results. No help. They have changed my oil I hope. Then there is Bates Ford in Lebanon, Tennessee. I have taken it there for oil change and informed them of issues. This is the last dealership who inspected the Bronco. They did not tell me about the oil leak. I drive 10 miles to work weekly. 100 miles every other month to visit elderly relatives. So, I have not put too much wear and tear on the Bronco and do not drive it hard. Please, If you are able to help in this area, it is much appreciated. I have 54,000 miles on it
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 3FMCR9B69MR
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start up, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the fuel injector was replaced under warranty. The contact then stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jolted forward upon depression of the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission, catalytic converter, and water pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-13
- VIN: 3FMCR9B63MR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The vehicle was traveling on a major highway when at a red light the car stopped and the auto start/stop engaged and the car turned off. After the car turned off I could not restart it. All power to the car was lost. No lights, radio, nothing. I attempted to put the car in neutral to move it off the highway, however the car is designed in a way it can not simply just be shifted into neutral. I grabbed the owners manual and read I needed to pull the manual park release cable located under the steering wheel. I pull the cable nothing. At this point I’ve called the local police department and they send out 2 officers. They attempt to shift the car into neutral as well, to no luck. I read the electronic parking break needs to be turned off but the car needs power to do this. My car has no power. A man comes with a jumper box and attempts to jump the car when it starts smoking. The battery has full voltage however it’s not transferring power to the car. I have to sit in the middle of a highway for 2 hours until a tow truck can tow my car. In those 2 hours I was at a significant risk of bodily and property damage and also risking harm to the other drivers on the road. Ford has no suggestion how to fix my specific problem. They’ve not taken into account a situation where there is no power to turn off the electronic parking break, to pull the cable and shift the car into neutral. The Ford service department had no idea how to replicate the situation to try and fix it. All I asked Ford for was a way to safely be able to remove my car from the middle of traffic the next time it happens. They have told me they can not help me. The Delaware city police department sent two officers who witnessed the event. Prior to the loss of power there was no warning. $1000 later I had a new starter put in and Ford did some recall work on it. However in my opinion the car is unsafe in the event power is lost again on the road.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 3FMCR9B68MR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling at a stop light with the automatic Start/Stop feature activated, the driver depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle instantly shut off. The vehicle was not able to be restarted and a tow truck was called to the scene. While examining the vehicle, the tow truck driver discovered that the battery in the engine compartment had exploded. The battery was replaced, and the vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

I have the Badlands model with the 2.0 liter engine. I've been driving it for 4700 miles and I'm happy to report that I average 26.8 mpg, with highway mileage ranging from 29-33 mpg (driving the speed limit, of course). The interior seating is comfortable, making long trips a breeze. While the back seats have limited space, they are still functional. The vehicle has plenty of storage in the back, which expands when the back seats are put down. I've had no issues at all and just completed my first oil change. The Badlands comes with a front-facing camera that I use when parking to ensure I am where I need to be. The front camera comes on automatically when engaging Rock Crawl, Mud/Ruts, or Sand mode. It also comes with Ford Co-Pilot 360 and Automatic High Beams, which are very nice features. The Co-Pilot 360 takes a bit to get used to if you have never used it before with the lane assist/centering, blind spot alerts, and pre-collision assist, but it is very nice and provides additional safety. Overall, I have been very pleased with the performance of the vehicle and have zero regrets purchasing it. As you read other reviews, remember that all vehicles can have problems, but the warranty addresses those. Drive it yourself, see if it fits your needs, and if you purchase it, enjoy! There are several Bronco Sport forums that assist with questions, problems, and a lot of ideas for personalizing it. One year update: almost 10K miles and still running strong with no issues. I'm very impressed with the quality of the BS. I have driven off-road several times and it did well. Buy or order with confidence!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that it might be a bit difficult to find what you're looking for at the moment. Unfortunately, you might not be able to get the best deal right now. But don't worry, things will get better soon!

I absolutely love driving my Bronco Sport! I've owned it for 8 months and have already driven over 7,000 miles. I was initially concerned about the 1.5 engine, but it has exceeded my expectations with its easy highway ramp acceleration and passing on two-lane highways. The handling is also fantastic, with flat cornering and a tight turn radius. The view out of the windshield is superb, and the headlights are the best I've ever had for visibility on dark country roads and in bad weather. The cargo area easily handled my load of bagged mulch this summer, and even the large box that my new power washer came in. While the lack of foot room in the back seats may be a drawback for some, it's not a huge problem for me personally since I rarely have passengers. I'm happy to report that there are zero squeaks or rattles, although there is some wind noise at higher speeds and during heavy rain. Overall, I highly recommend the Bronco Sport to anyone looking for a reliable and versatile vehicle!

Great vehicle! It rides like a little truck, but the whole family really enjoys riding in it. It's loaded and comfortable to ride both on and off the road.

Took delivery in April and have driven 8500 miles in it. It's been very comfortable and quiet, and easy to drive. It does everything well and I've been getting 33.7 mpg combined since purchase. I haven't had any mechanical issues so far, and I've already driven 39000 trouble-free miles. I would definitely buy it again!

I really enjoyed my Bronco Big Bend, but unfortunately, I started experiencing a loud grinding noise when I backed up and turned out of my driveway at around 2400 miles. I took it to Ford, but they were unable to identify the issue at first. However, I insisted that they take another look and left it with them overnight. While I'm not too happy with the situation, I'm hopeful that they will be able to resolve the issue soon. Interestingly, my Escape doesn't make the same noise when I back up and turn out of my driveway. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the vehicle you're referring to might not be suitable for off-road driving, despite what you may have seen on TV. It seems like you've had some trouble with the shields on the underside of the car, which unfortunately resulted in some costly repairs. It's worth noting that the shields are made out of felt, not steel, so they may not hold up well to rough terrain. Just a friendly heads up - it's always better to err on the side of caution and avoid taking it off-road to prevent any further damage. Take care!

I purchased my Bronco Sport a year ago and unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop 10 times for the same issue, not to mention other problems it has had. The digital screen intermittently doesn't work and despite the shop replacing the instrument cluster twice, the gateway module, and wiring harness, the issue persists. I have started a claim with Ford for the buyback process. In addition to this, the window seals failed and it rained inside the car, the doors won't unlock unless you use the key and have to reboot the system to fix it, front mud flaps fell off, and carpet started peeling. The check engine light also comes on for catalytic converter, but Ford has assured me that it's fine and just needs to be driven longer to work it in. I have mixed feelings about my Bronco, as I love it but am frustrated with the amount of time it has spent in the shop.

We have had our Outerbanks since January and started experiencing brake noise before reaching 1000 miles. Despite being given multiple excuses, we have not received a satisfactory solution. While the vehicle may operate fine, the noise is embarrassing, especially when reversing. It is concerning that Ford has not taken responsibility for this issue. If they cannot address a minor problem, it raises questions about their ability to handle major issues. As a result, this will be the last Ford vehicle I purchase.

I love the looks, size, exterior, and interior of the Bronco Sport. However, I would like to share my experience with the driver's seat and the gas pedal. The driver's seat is too low, even at its maximum, and the gas pedal is further away and much smaller than the brake pedal. This can be a concern for those who practice heel/toe driving. It is important to be aware of this before making a purchase. Safety is a top priority, and it is crucial to ensure that you are comfortable and safe while driving.
