The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.

Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.

.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 2020 Chevrolet Suburban problems

The Chevrolet Suburban, a full-size SUV popular for its versatility, has faced several common problems over the years, as reported by its owners. Although these issues vary in severity and frequency, they are essential to consider before purchasing a 2020 Chevrolet Suburban.

  • Maintenance Costs: Chevrolet Suburbans, particularly those from 2019 or earlier, can be expensive to maintain. The average cost for 5 years of maintenance is about $800 for models from 2019 or newer and approximately $1,500 for models from 2015 or later. Older models may cost more than $2,000 per year to maintain.
  • Severity of Repair Score: The Chevrolet Suburban has a higher "Severity of Repair" score of 15% compared to the average of 12% for all vehicle models, indicating a higher likelihood of needing severe repairs.
  • Engine Problems: The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban, in particular, has faced engine problems, such as excessive oil consumption. Although the 2020 model is not explicitly mentioned, it is essential to be aware of these issues when considering a Suburban.
  • Electrical Issues: Some owners have reported electrical problems, such as issues with the radio and window controls.
  • Fuel System Issues: The 2020 Chevrolet Suburban has been reported to have fuel system issues, specifically the P0446 code, which indicates a small evaporative emission leak.
  • Window Regulator Failure: Some Suburban owners have experienced window regulator failure, which can be costly to repair.
  • Speaker and Subwoofer Replacement: Many Suburban owners have reported blown-out speakers, which may require replacement.
  • Parking Brake Adjustment: The parking brake in some Suburbans may not hold the vehicle in place due to cable stretch.
  • Oil Leaks: Over time, all vehicles, including the Suburban, develop oil leaks. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become significant problems.

In conclusion, while the Chevrolet Suburban is a popular and versatile full-size SUV, it is essential to be aware of these common problems when considering a 2020 model. Regular maintenance, inspections, and addressing issues promptly can help ensure a reliable and enjoyable ownership experience.

Negative 2020 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. Kenton Lesch 2024-11-22

At 18, I got my very first tattoo - a Chevy bow tie on my left arm. Since then, I have always driven Chevy vehicles and have never been disappointed. However, my recent purchase of a 2018 Suburban LT with 54k miles has left me feeling underwhelmed. Despite having every single option available, the car struggled to tow a tandem axel trailer and lacked the power I needed for my family's needs. Although the dealer assured me that the transmission and transfer case were fine, I am not convinced. As a loyal Chevy customer, I am disappointed that the direction they took was to add fancy buttons and take away the power to the motor. I am now considering trading it in for a Ford F-350, which is something I never thought I'd consider.

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about my experience with a used 2018 Suburban. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with the transmission and ended up having to replace it for $6,000.00. I was pretty disappointed, especially since the vehicle had just under 100K miles and had never pulled a trailer. I was even stranded 300 miles from home with no warning! On Star didn't even catch it until it had already broken down. I had to pay an additional $500 for transportation to return the vehicle to my hometown and was without the SUV for 30 days. From what I've seen online, it seems like this is a common issue with the Suburban, Tahoe, Silverado 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra 1500. Just thought I'd share my experience with you so you can make an informed decision. Take care!

  3. Davin Murray 2024-09-26

It's been a while since I last rode in a suburban. From what I remember, there was plenty of passenger room, but that was about 10 years ago. Fast forward to the 2018 model and it seems like they've made some changes. While the driver and passenger seats are comfortable, getting in and out of this tank can be awkward and cumbersome. Unfortunately, the middle and third rows of seats are quite cramped and not as adjustable as other vehicles in its class. While there is a lot of cargo room, it may not be the best option for families with teens. The engineering of this car could use some improvement, especially with the orientation of the displays, devices, and buttons. The speedometer is difficult to read, and the digital display lags behind reality. Additionally, the car lacks proximity and blind spot sensors, which can make it difficult to see out of. Despite these drawbacks, the car is still the largest on the road and people generally give way. The ride can be a bit bouncy, but overall it's a decent option for those in need of a lot of cargo space. The springs/struts could benefit from being tighter. While the gas mileage is not great, the large gas tank allows for a projected range of up to 700 miles, giving the illusion of better mileage. However, it still requires filling up once every two weeks, which is not ideal. The accelerator may feel loose and require a bit of pressure to get going from a dead stop. Overall, there are better options available at this price point in other brands. It's surprising that this vehicle is so popular, given the current state of American car engineering.

I purchased a 2019 Suburban LT 4 wheel drive with all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues during my ownership. The battery died suddenly leaving me stranded on the road in the Florida heat during summer. Additionally, there were noises in the front brakes that took multiple visits to service and some extra dollars to solve the problem, including changing the front brakes in such a short time. Lastly, the starter failed during the vehicle's third year, resulting in a $730 bill. While the gas mileage wasn't great, it wasn't a surprise. Despite these issues, I am confident in my decision to trade it in for a different brand as soon as inventory is available.

I rented a car for a day while my Mercedes E350 was getting serviced. Unfortunately, the car rental only had a Suburban available. On the plus side, the Suburban seems to have a high towing capacity and the engine is smooth with lots of low-end torque. However, there are some downsides to the car. Firstly, it is enormous and even on the highway, I was always afraid of hitting another vehicle. Parking and maneuvering the car is a nightmare and visibility is very poor. The truck-based design makes sure you feel even minor imperfections of the road while you also have this monster constantly floating on the highway and you never really feel planted. Additionally, the fit and finish are poor with cheap plastic parts (though admittedly way better than Chevys from 10 years ago). The door lock of the right front passenger door feels like it’s giving out in a car with only 8k miles. Fuel economy is nothing to brag about and the ergonomics are poor (no telescoping steering wheel, all sorts of instruments that aren’t relevant, oddly far distance between gas pedal and brake pedal which creates a delay in making stops), weak brakes that are not confidence-inspiring. Lastly, the price of $50k for a Chevy is quite steep. However, if you have 5 kids to shlep around and also need to tow a boat every weekend and plan to sleep/live in the car and/or want to feel like in the Presidents motorcade, maybe this car would be worth considering. I was so glad to have my Mercedes back, all of a sudden the E350 felt like a sports car!

  2. Salvador Marks 2024-06-07

From sports cars to a Suburban is a huge jump but I absolutely love my Suburban; it's my dog car. It rides like a Cadillac, has lots of room, doesn't require expensive repairs, and can comfortably hold 6 adults even on long trips. There's plenty of space for luggage and kids' stuff, and most importantly, it's practically maintenance-free. With over 200,000 miles, it's an awesome vehicle that I have serviced regularly.
