2022 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.
Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.
.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).
A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 2022 Chevrolet Suburban problems
The Chevrolet Suburban, a popular full-size SUV, has faced several common problems over the years, with the 2022 model being no exception. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners:
- Air Conditioning (A/C) Performance: Pre-2016 Chevrolet Suburbans, including the 2022 model, have been reported to have issues with A/C performance. The most common problem is poor cooling capacity, which is the most reported issue on CarComplaints.com for this model. This issue is not a major concern, but it requires regular checks for leaks and belt conditions to ensure proper functioning.
- Expensive Maintenance: Chevy Suburbans, especially those from 2019 or earlier, are known to be expensive to maintain. The average cost per year for 5 years is about $800 for 2019 or newer models and about $1,500 for 2015 or later models. Older models can cost over $2,000 per year to maintain, making them a significant financial commitment.
- Severity of Repair Score: According to RepairPal, the Chevrolet Suburban has a higher "Severity of Repair" score of 15%, compared to the average of 12% for all vehicle models. This indicates that the Suburban is more likely to require severe repairs than other vehicles, which should be considered when purchasing a used model.
- Engine Problems: The 2009 Chevrolet Suburban has been reported to have engine problems, specifically related to excessive oil consumption. This issue was significant enough to rank the 2009 Suburban as one of the worst vehicles for oil consumption on Car Complaints.
- High Insurance Costs: The Chevy Suburban is known to have high insurance costs, with an average annual premium of $1,800, which is more than 10% of what other SUVs cost.
- Depreciation: The Chevy Suburban depreciates at a rate of about 7% per year, or 35% in 5 years. This means that a new Suburban purchased today for around $60,000 will be worth almost half that amount when sold 5 years later. The best way to minimize depreciation is to buy used cars instead of new ones, especially if they have already dropped significantly in value over their lifetime.
- Transmission Problems: Earlier models of the Chevrolet Suburban, including those from the 2000s, have been reported to have transmission issues. These problems include harsh shifts and engine bogging caused by the torque converter clutch applying during shifts from first to second gear. The wiring needs to be redone to resolve this problem permanently, which may require several attempts before it is resolved completely.
- Recalls: The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban has had recalls related to exterior lighting and seat belts. The exterior lighting recall involves daytime running lights (DRLs) that may not deactivate when the headlights are on, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108. The seat belt recall involves a rivet that retains the buckle to the mounting bracket in the left or right side third-row seat belt buckle assembly, which may have been improperly formed, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
In conclusion, the Chevrolet Suburban, including the 2022 model, has faced several common problems, including A/C performance issues, expensive maintenance, high repair severity scores, engine problems, high insurance costs, depreciation, transmission issues, and recalls. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 1GNSKDKL0NR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: While traveling back from Labor Day Weekend on [XXX], I was driving in the Dallas Fort Worth area when I experienced loss of power to our vehicle on a major highway [XXX] and [XXX] ) and directly on a bridge with my entire family in the vehicle (4 kids and all of our luggage). It was a very dangerous and scary situation. We had to wait one hour for a tow truck to come and take my vehicle to the closest GM dealership. I was left stranded, 3 hours from my home with my four children and luggage. The Chevrolet dealership contacted me 9 days later and informed me the technician looked at the vehicle and determined the engine was locked up/seized. It would take 9 months to get the vehicle back into the shop to determine what caused the issue and then take 6-12 months for a new engine. I have a family of 6 and I'm left car-less for two years. Yet I still have to make the monthly payment on a vehicle that I won't be driving or be in possession of. MY BIGGEST ISSUE: GM has known that they have had engine issues for many years. Particularly, with Dynamic Fuel Management causing lifter issues which leads to engine failure, yet never disclosed this to me when I purchased the vehicle. Furthermore, they never disclosed that the issue was so prevalent that motors were back ordered for over a year. Consumers are being misled into spending their hard earned money on vehicles that have major mechanical design flaws known to the manufacturer. Once the mechanical flaw is realized, the vehicle can't be repaired for up to two years. Hiding this data from consumers should be criminal. Furthermore, General Motors to this point has been no help, with the GM customer satisfaction team telling us they can't do anything until a dealer diagnosis the issue, and the dealer stating they can't diagnose the issue until May of next year, at which time they would then look to order the motor which will take 9-12 months to deliver and install. - VIN: 1GNSKDKDXNR
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: My vehicle was sold as EQUIPPED W/ FRONT/REAR PARK ASSIST; INCLUDES LATER RETROFIT printed on the window sticker . I took delivery nearly 2 years ago and this safety retrofit has still not been completed . I have reached out to GM customer service who provides vague excuses and no further information for repair. I see new GM vehicles just like mine on the lot with these systems installed and working . Isn’t this a serious concern that 2 years later these vehicles have still not been retrofitted ? Are there other concerned customers ? Is there an investigation underway looking for explanations from GM . What more can I do as a consumer to make sure no children are ran over by cars missing these sensors ?
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: 1GNSKDKL2NR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: It was diagnosed as the Telecommunication Module, this part malfunctioned causing issues with audio in the vehicle. The audio would at times play normal, at times go completely out losing all sound to turn signals, hazard signals, and safety sensor audios inside the vehicle. It would additionally lose communication between the key fob and the unit causing warnings during driving and non-start issues. With that said, the lose of audio when expecting safety sensor sounds, or sudden audio on complete full volume with the only resolution being to shut the car off is a safety issue. The vehicle had to be pulled over on the travel portion of the highway to resolve the sound issues on multiple occasions. Software updates, radio head change didn’t matter, until it was diagnosed as the module described above. Occurrences were completely random.
STEERING PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1GNSCCKD8NR
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: This is the second Chevrolet Suburban we have owned. In both cars, the middle seat of the 2nd and 3rd row bench seats are missing a head rest. This could result in a severe neck injury to the passenger in a car accident. How is Chevrolet allowed to roll out these cars from the factory with this obvious safety defect?
BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- VIN: 1GNSKBET0NR
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: When the vehicle was ordered I paid an extra amount for "driver safety alert package" to include rear and front parking sensors. It's a big car and these are quite important for safe operations. Upon car delivery in 3/2022, I got a note saying the chip operating the driver assist is missing and will be provided later. The dealer promised to install it within a quarter. More than a year went buy, and the service department recently told me that GM would not make the chip available, even tough new cars are now being delivered with the same chip. As GM or the dealer would not respond to my request, I'm filing this complaint, hoping you can get them to finally provide the missing chip and to allow safe operation of the vehicle as ordered.

Congratulations on your new 2022 Diesel Suburban! It sounds like it has exceeded your expectations with its spacious and comfortable interior, while still handling like a mid-sized SUV. Choosing diesel was a great decision, as it provides excellent mileage, with 22-25 MPG in mixed town driving and closer to 30 on the freeway at 75MPH. As you continue to put more miles on it and switch to summer blended diesel fuel, I'm sure you'll see even better results. It's impressive that you're getting such great fuel economy, especially considering the cold weather in Michigan and the slightly less BTUs in the winter blend. Overall, it sounds like you made an outstanding choice with this vehicle, which offers impressive performance, comfort, power, and fuel economy. Please note that diesel was not an option in the selection, but this one is the 3.0 Straight 6 Diesel.

Congratulations on your new 2022 Suburban RST 4WD with the 3.0L Duramax diesel! It's great to hear that you're already enjoying the spaciousness and impressive fuel efficiency of this vehicle. I've had my new Suburban LT for 3 weeks and I'm very happy with it so far. Although I didn't think I really wanted a sunroof, I've come to love it! The WiFi is great for my grandkids, who all like to watch whatever they want on their iPads. I also really appreciate all the safety features and cameras. Go Big or Go Home!

I leased a 2021 Suburban LT in December and initially enjoyed its sleek appearance and smooth ride. However, I have unfortunately experienced multiple issues with the vehicle, including a dead battery, service restraint system light, and check engine light, resulting in six service visits and over three weeks of dealership time. Despite my disappointment, I remain confident in my assessment of the vehicle and would advise against purchasing any Chevy vehicle. As a loyal customer, I expected better treatment and service from GM.

We have unfortunately experienced two instances where our 2022 Suburban has left us stranded. The first time was due to an OTA update, which drained the battery overnight and prevented the update from completing. Just recently, my wife started the car to go to work and the infotainment screen was black. Later that day, the LoJack app notified me that the battery was draining. Although my wife was able to drive it home, the infotainment screen remained black. Unfortunately, this morning the car would not start again. Despite having owned the car for less than a year, we have had a few issues with it. However, we are hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

I really wanted to love this Suburban, but unfortunately, we've had some issues with it. Despite purchasing the 3.0 baby Duramax, the car seems to be possessed and the dealership has been unable to identify the problem. It's frustrating to spend $80K on a car and not know what will work each time you drive it. For example, the heated seats turn on high and can't be turned off, and the infotainment system doesn't work about every 3rd time you get in it. Additionally, the driver's mirror randomly rotates down (even though I've turned off the option for reverse), the dash goes black, and the front braking sensor and side mirror sensors go off at nothing. The car also has a hard shift into 3rd gear, which happens randomly. We've even had to disconnect the battery when more than 3 random oddities happen consistently, which seems to last about 5-6000 miles. Unfortunately, we may have to trade it since GM has been unable to identify the problem or provide a solution.

The interior room for the new Suburban is not sufficient for four grown men to ride in comfort. When I bought this vehicle, I assumed it would have ample space, but unfortunately, that is not the case. Surprisingly, my new Dodge Charger has more leg room for me and my friends. I kindly request that GMC improve the interior space in future models. Thank you!
