1998 Ford F-250 problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1998 Ford F-250 problems

The Ford F-250 1998 has several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Suspension and steering issues: Suspension issues can make it difficult for the driver to control the car, which is very risky. It can also involve expensive repairs, which may not be durable as long as the suspension is prone to wear and tear. The suspension issue was very glaring in the 2006 and 2011 models. Drivers of Ford F-250 trucks may experience wobbling while steering and locking up of the steering wheel, among other problems. These control problems are related to the already discussed suspension problems. The infamous "death wobble" was one of the most commonly reported issues along with shaking of the wheel, which often led to drivers losing control at highway speeds.
  • Broken drive shaft: Ford F-250s from 2017 to 2022 frequently experienced drive shaft fractures. This happened as a result of heat and noise insulators beneath the body that may come loose and come into contact with the aluminum driveshaft, cracking it.

These common problems with the Ford F-250 1998 have led to several quality issues, with many owners expressing dissatisfaction with the vehicle's performance. The engine, suspension, and steering problems are the most frequently reported issues, and they can lead to expensive repairs and safety risks. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-26
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FTPX28L4WN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE EVENING OF JULY 26TH, 2011 APPROXIMATELY 10:00PM EST, AN ENGINE FIRE OCCURRED IN OUR 1998 FORD F-250 TRUCK (EXT CAB, TRITON V-8 ENGINE, LARIAT ED). THE F-250 HAD BEEN PARKED IN A REMOTE PARKING AREA ON THE INTERIOR AREA OF THE MASON COUNTY FAIR GROUNDS. DUE TO COUNTY FAIR ACTIVITIES DURING THAT DAY, THE TRUCK HAD NOT BEEN STARTED FOR OVER 10 HOURS WHEN THIS FIRE OCCURRED. THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. IT TOTALED THE ENGINE, BUCKLED THE HOOD, BLISTERED THE PAINT, ETC. LUCKILY THERE WAS NO PROPERTY DAMAGE, NOR WAS THERE ANY BODILY INJURY. WE HAD PURCHASED THE TRUCK IN APRIL OF 2010. THIS TRUCK WAS IN PRISTINE (EAT OFF THE ENGINE) CONDITION. SINCE WE HAVE OWNED IT, IT HAD REGULAR OIL CHANGES (MOBIL-1 SYNTHETIC ONLY). ASIDE FROM THAT, AND OTHER NORMAL MAITENANCE, THERE HAD BEEN NO MODIFICATIONS TO THE VEHICLE, WHICH HAD STOCK EQPT WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. NO-OFF ROADING, MY SON BABIED THIS TRUCK. HE DID NOT EVEN LIKE GOING TO HIS GIRLFRIEND'S HOME WITH IT, BECAUSE SHE LIVED ON A DIRT ROAD. HE IS MORE THAN JUST LEFT WITHOUT A VEHICLE, HE IS HEARTBROKEN, TO SAY THE LEAST. I HAVE CHECKED THAT THERE WAS A POLICE REPORT. 911 WAS CALLED, BUT ULTIMATELY IT IS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT THAT MADE THE REPORT. I NOTIFIED FORD ON JULY 27TH, 2011. ON JULY 30TH, 2011 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MARIA AGUILERA, PRODUCT CLAIMS LEGAL ANALYST, FORD'S OFFICE OF GENERAL COUNCIL IN DEARBORN, MI. WE ARE WORKING TO GATHER INFORMATION REQUIRED BY HER AT THIS TIME. *KB

  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES AND LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. THE LUG NUTS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT CREATE SUFFICIENT CLAMP LOAD ALLOWING WHEEL MOVEMENT IN RELATION TO THE HUB/ROTOR MOUNTING SURFACE.
  • Consequence: THIS CAN RESULT IN THE LOOSENING OF LUG NUTS, STUD FATIGUE FAILURE, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WILL BE RECEIVING TWO NOTIFICATIONS. THE FIRST NOTIFICATION, WHICH BEGAN IN MAY 1998, WILL PROVIDE AN INTERIM REPAIR PROCEDURE UNTIL PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND MULTI-PURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY WAS NOT FULLY ATTACHED TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET, THE SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY CAN COME OUT OF THE BRACKET. THE VEHICLE OPERATOR WOULD THEN NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION FROM ONE OF THE DRIVE GEAR POSITIONS INTO THE PARK POSITION EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WOULD INDICATE "PARK."
  • Consequence: THE CONDITION WOULD NOT ALLOW A DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE PARK POSITION OR AFFECT PROPER NEUTRAL START SWITCH OPERATION. UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR IF THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT SET.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MAKE THE PROPER ATTACHMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CONTROL CABLE TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET AND ADD A TIE STRAP TO THAT CONNECTION.

Negative 1998 Ford F-250 car reviews

  1. Elvis Langworth 2024-09-07

No major problems (yet). Mine has the small V8 with a tow package, so it can be slow going up hills with a trailer. At 100k miles, the transmission is starting to have rough shifts when cold. However, I haven't done much towing or city driving, and it has a cooler as part of the tow package. Surprisingly, the original Goodyear tires lasted 92k miles! Additionally, I'm still on the original disk brake pads at 108k miles. Overall, this is the best truck I have ever owned.

  2. Neal Vandervort 2024-02-07

I really enjoyed driving this truck, although I did have a problem with a blown spark plug. Unfortunately, the dealership said it needed to be recalled, but Ford hasn't done it yet. It was a bit difficult to find aftermarket wheels for it, as I had to switch to super duty axles. However, I raised the torsion bars and put on 315's, which made it look like it had a lift. The black exterior, black windows, and big black tires made it stand out in a good way. I never had any issues with the 4x4. The motor did need to be overhauled at around 160,000 miles. Overall, it was a great truck to drive!

Positive 1998 Ford F-250 car reviews

  1. Torey Mante 2024-11-19

The diesel capacitor issue was easily resolved by upgrading to Ford's 3rd generation capacitor, which is now highly reliable. Additionally, I improved the truck's height by adding a leaf all around instead of using a lift kit, and I am extremely satisfied with the results. This truck is highly dependable and capable of handling any terrain. I immediately upgraded to 265 tires. While the plastic trim on the XLT's interior is fragile, the rear seat is adequate, as we've had teenagers sit in the back for long trips twice. For optimal performance, I highly recommend choosing the manual transmission when selecting a diesel, as it provides the added benefit of using engine compression off-road and in poor road conditions.

  2. Jevon Auer 2024-10-25

I've owned this truck for 26 years and every time I drive it, I fall in love even more. From the fin windows (why did those ever go away?) to the throaty roar of the 7.3 diesel, there's nothing I don't love. It's comfortable to drive, powerful enough to pull a 4 horse head to head trailer, and has an extended cab with an 8' bed. People are always asking me if I want to sell it, but the answer is always no!

  3. Melvina Kuvalis 2024-10-15

I'm glad to hear that you've never had any trouble with this truck. While the horsepower may not be what you were hoping for, it's great to hear that the torque is excellent.

  4. Dorcas Beer 2024-09-15

This truck is a 3/4 ton Ford F-250 light duty. It has a peppy engine for its size. Although this same engine (5.4L) may not be suitable for the full-size F-250, this truck has no problem handling most any job you dish out.

  5. Doris Pacocha 2024-09-14

It's great to hear that after twenty five years, it's still running strong!
