Common 2005 Chevrolet Classic problems

The 2005 Chevrolet Classic, a popular vehicle among drivers, has been reported to have several common problems. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues by owners of this car, along with detailed explanations.

  • Starting Problems: Some drivers have experienced difficulty starting their 2005 Chevrolet Classic, with the car sometimes not starting at all. This issue has been linked to a security feature that prevents the car from starting if the key is not in the run position. The security light blinks, and the car will start only after the key is turned over once and left to sit for about ten minutes. This can be frustrating and time-consuming, but dealers have quoted around $500 to fix the problem.
  • Rear Suspension Knuckle Bolts: A recall was issued for certain 2005 Chevrolet Classic vehicles equipped with rear suspension knuckle bolts that were not to specification and could fracture under high loads. If the bolt fractures, the rear suspension linkage could detach from the knuckle, causing sudden changes in vehicle handling and potentially leading to a crash without warning. Dealers were instructed to replace both rear suspension knuckle bolts to address this issue.
  • Ignition Key Issues: Another recall was issued for 2005 Chevrolet Classic vehicles due to a potential problem with the ignition key. If the key is not in the run position, the airbags may not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. GM provided two replacement key rings and key covers on all ignition keys to address this issue.
  • Lackluster Interior Materials: Some owners have reported that the interior materials of the 2005 Chevrolet Classic are not as high-quality as they would like. This can lead to a less comfortable driving experience and may require more frequent repairs or replacements of interior components.
  • Subpar Brakes and Steering: The 2005 Chevrolet Classic has been criticized for its subpar brakes and steering, which can make the car less responsive and more difficult to control. This can be particularly problematic in emergency situations or when driving at high speeds.
  • Less Powerful and Less Refined Engine: The 2005 Chevrolet Classic's engine has been described as less powerful and less refined compared to its competitors. This can lead to slower acceleration and less efficient fuel consumption, particularly during highway driving.

While these issues can be frustrating for owners of the 2005 Chevrolet Classic, it is important to note that many of these problems can be addressed through regular maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the recall campaigns initiated by GM demonstrate a commitment to addressing safety concerns and ensuring the well-being of drivers and passengers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-01
  • VIN: 1G1ND52F95M
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE THEFT BYPASS SYSTEM, ON MY 2005 CHEVY CLASSIC. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL. IT WAS FOR THE IGNITION KEY ROTATION. WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP, I TOLD THEM THAT I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR (SUDDENLY) DYING. I TOLD THEM THAT IT HAD DIED WHEN I WAS ON THE FREEWAY (TWICE), WHILE DRIVING ON THE CITY STREETS, AND IN MY DRIVEWAY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THIS PAST FRIDAY, LATE IN THE EVENING, MY CAR (SUDDENLY) DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION. THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD, THE DRIVERS AROUND ME WERE PAYING ATTENTION -- I COULD HAVE BEEN IN AN AWFUL ACCIDENT. SEVERAL PEOPLE, KINDLY, PUSHED MY CAR INTO A PARKING LOT. WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT, A MECHANIC STOPPED TO LOOK AT THE CAR. HE TOLD ME THAT MY CHEVY IS WELL KNOWN FOR HAVING A DEFECTIVE PASS-LOCK SENSOR SECURITY SYSTEM, WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE MIGHT BE A RECALL. YET, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND THAT INFORMATION -- GM IS NOT HELPFUL! AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, THE CAR STILL WOULDN'T START. I HAD A FRIEND TOW ME HOME. I AM OLDER AND DISABLED AND MUST HAVE A RELIABLE VEHICLE. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE TO MY DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, VIA THE FREEWAY. YET, I HAVE (ALREADY) EXPERIENCED MY CAR (SUDDENLY) DYING ON THE FREEWAY. I AM TERRIFIED OF GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT AND (POSSIBLY) HURTING/KILLING MYSELF AND/OR SOMEONE ELSE. I, TRULY, BELIEVE THAT THIS DEFECT IS GM'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX FREE OF CHARGE. OR, PERHAPS THERE IS A RECALL THAT I'M UNAWARE OF? EITHER WAY, PLEASE HELP ME. I AM THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-17
  • VIN: 1G1ND52F55M
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I ARRIVED AT WORK AND WAS TOLD BY COWORKERS THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE STILL ON. THEY WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. I REMOVED THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL TO AVOID DRAINING MY BATTERY. ON THE DRIVE HOME, AFTER RECONNECTING BATTERY, I DISCOVERED MY CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING EITHER. I SAW ON THE INTERNET A RECALL (GM 13036) THAT COVERED THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON SEVERAL MODELS INCLUDING THE MALIBU WHICH MY CAR NEARLY IDENTICAL TO. UNFORTUNATELY IT DOES NOT COVER MY MODEL AND IT SHOULD! CLEARLY THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE AND 2005 CLASSIC SHOULD BE INCLUDED. I CURRENTLY AM DRIVING WITH THE LIGHTS STUCK ON AND HAVE TO DISCONNECT / CONNECT BATTERY TERMINAL EVERY TIME I DRIVE.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-13
  • VIN: 1G1ND52F25M
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I HEARD SOME CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT END. WAS TOLD BY A CHAIN REPAIR SHOP THAT THE STRUTS PROBABLY NEEDED REPLACING. I THOUGHT IT WAS TOO LOUD FOR THAT, BUT I TRUSTED THEIR OPINION. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS WAY OFF CENTER. AS I WENT TO MAKE A U-TURN, I LOST STEERING COMPLETELY. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MOVE OUT OF TRAFFIC SAFELY WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. OBVIOUSLY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER ON THE FREEWAY. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE MOUNTING TABS FOR THE STEERING GEAR WHERE EVERYTHING IS ATTACHED RUSTED OUT COMPLETELY FROM THE SUBFRAME AND NEEDED A CRADLE SO HE COULD RE-ATTACH THE STEERING COMPONENTS. ALSO, THE STEERING RACK WAS DAMAGED IN THE PROCESS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL. TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS WAS $1390, WHICH WAS ACHIEVED BECAUSE OF FINDING USED PARTS.

STEERING,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

I TEST DROVE A FIGURE EIGHT AND PARKED WITH PASSENGER WHEEL 30 DEGREES OUT OF ALIGNMENT. LOSS OF STEERING (NOT JUST POWER), REGARDLESS OF CAUSE, STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE CRADLE CAN'T BE ALLOWED TO FAIL, EVER. I ASSERT THAT THERE IS A CRITICAL FLAW IN SOME OR ALL CRADLES USED BY THE GMX130 PLATFORM MAKING THEM VULNERABLE TO EXTREME CORROSION, LEADING TO A VARIETY OF POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING COMPONENT FAILURES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF STEERING. ... ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-04
  • VIN: 1G1ND52F65M
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE FIRST TIME I HAD THIS ISSUE AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, I WAS TOLD I HAD TO HAVE THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED, WHICH WAS NOT THE ISSUE COME TO FIND OUT. MY CHEVROLET CLASSIC 2005 INTERMITTENTLY REFUSED TO START. THE CAR WOULD ATTEMPT TO TURN OVER BUT REFUSE. THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT WOULD BLINK DURING THIS TIME. MOST RECENTLY, THE VEHICLE DID THIS AGAIN BUT ALLOWED MY TO START IT FINE FOR A WEEK AND A HALF BUT WENT BACK INTO NOT STARTING WITH THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT FLASHING. I THOUGHT, HOW IS THAT, I OWN THIS VEHICLE I AM THE OWNER STARTING THE IGNITION WITH THE KEY? I HAVE HAD SEVERAL MECHANICS (MOST RECENT TIRES PLUS, EARLY MAY 2014) TELL ME THEY COULDN'T FIND AN ISSUE AND THAT WITHOUT THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM, THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED STARTING AGAIN, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO CHEVROLET THIS TIME FOR SERVICE. I WAS TOLD TODAY THAT IT IS THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE TALKED TO FORMER CHEVROLET OWNERS WHO SAID THEY HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND KEPT HAVING THE PASSLOCK PROBLEM FIXED EVERY TIME. THEY SAID THEY FINALLY DITCHED THEIR CHEVROLETS AND GOT TOYOTAS TO AVOID THE ISSUE. I HAVE ALSO RESEARCHED A LOT OF FORUMS, AND YOUTUBE VIDEOS DEMONSTRATING THIS PROBLEM WHICH HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER CHEVROLET AND GM OWNERS. I BELIEVE THAT SINCE THIS HAS BEEN A FAULTY PART FOR MANY OWNERS, THEN CHEVROLET AND GM SHOULD BE WORKING TO SOLVING THIS ISSUE FOR ALL OWNERS. THE COST TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE IS HIGH. I BELIEVE THAT SINCE THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR MANY CHEVROLET AND GM OWNERS, THIS SHOULD BE A PROBLEM THEY SHOULD BE STRIVING TO FIX AND TO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY FIXED CHEVROLET AND GM'S MISTAKE. I DON'T BELIEVE THERE IS SOMETHING WE DID TO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM IN OUR OWN VEHICLES, AS WE AREN'T ATTEMPTING TO STEAL THEM, BUT SIMPLY DRIVE OUR OWN VEHICLES. THANK YOU. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-12
  • VIN: 1G1ND52F15M
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THE CAR WAS PURCHASED RECENTLY (LATE DECEMBER, 2013) ON A SALVAGE TITLE BY MY MOTHER. ON SATURDAY, APRIL 12 I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MILES AN HOUR AND SUDDENLY THE CAR STARTED DECELERATING. I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL BUT NOTHING HAPPENED- THE SPEED KEPT DROPPING. AS WE SLOWED TO A STOP I TOOK THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD TO THE SIDE AND PARKED. A PASSENGER WAS IN THE CAR WITH ME. WE WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND THE CLASSIC STARTED AGAIN AND DROVE ALRIGHT. BUT THE SAME THING KEPT HAPPENING A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD (IF MEMORY SERVES, THIS OCCURRED FIVE TIMES THAT DAY). THE VEHICLE HAD TO WAIT ABOUT TWO TO THREE MINUTES TO START AGAIN- TURNING THE KEY EARLIER PRODUCED A THUMPING SOUND INSIDE, A THUD-THUD-THUD SOUND. I AM RELUCTANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED AND I AM CONTACTING YOUR AGENCY ABOUT THE MATTER BECAUSE IF IT DOES PERTAIN TO A SAFETY/PARTS ISSUE IT MAY BE SOMETHING WHICH COULD IMPACT OTHER DRIVERS WITH THE SAME MODEL AS WELL. WHEN CARS LOSE SPEED SUDDENLY ON THE HIGHWAY THEY CAN POSE A TRAFFIC HAZARD TO OTHER VEHICLES. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER TO LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THIS ISSUE TOO. A SIMILAR INCIDENT HAPPENED EARLIER THIS MONTH, AND AT THAT TIME WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE SHOP AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND MUFFLER WERE BOTH REPLACED WITH NEW EQUIPMENT. *JS

Negative 2005 Chevrolet Classic car reviews

  1. Fabian Bechtelar 2025-01-03

I purchased this car back in 2006 when it had only 30k miles on it. At the time, my credit score was not great, so I ended up paying more than I should have. While I have had to replace a few things on the car, such as the front brakes, tires, heater setting plate, and module box, which cost me around $2,000, it has still held up pretty well over the years. The only minor issues I have experienced are that the carpet is cut a bit too short on both the passenger and driver's side, but I was able to fix it with some super glue. Additionally, during heavy rain, there is sometimes a small leak on the passenger side. On the bright side, it still runs almost as well as it did when I first bought it, even after 5 years of use. I don't drive it too much on a daily basis, only about 10 miles, but it is a comfortable ride and gets great mileage on long trips.

  2. Willis Bruen 2024-11-17

Although there have been some challenges with this car, I am confident in my ability to address them. Last summer, I replaced the face plate on the a/c to ensure it was properly connected to the power source. I have also been working to address some electronic issues that may be related to the anti-theft system and sealing. While there have been some leaks during heavy rain, I am confident that I can find a solution to this issue. Overall, I am confident that with some attention and care, this car can be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to own.

  3. Lucius Runolfsson 2024-11-14

Although my Malibu had some recent repairs, unfortunately the engine failed at 150,000 miles. While it was good on gas, it struggled on inclines and I found it to be cheaply made. In my opinion, there may be better options available. Thank you for considering my experience.

  4. Jaylon Smith 2024-04-16

I recently inherited this car from my Mom, and it has been a reliable ride so far. It has 90K original miles and has been in a minor accident before, but overall it's in good condition. Although I have some reservations about cars made by the Big Three, I have to say that this one has proven me wrong. The drivetrain can be a bit noisy, but the road noise is acceptable. The car has enough power, but the shifting could be smoother. There is a slight vibration when idling in gear, which might be due to the engine mounts, but I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. Apparently, this is a common issue with the 04-05 Classics (although it's worth noting that this car isn't a real Malibu, just manufactured under that name and mainly used by rental companies). With proper maintenance, I'm hoping to get another 100K miles out of this car. My previous car was a 99 Camry LE 4 cyl. with 300K miles on it, and it ran like a dream, so I might be a bit biased.

This car has been a disappointment in many ways. It can be difficult to drive, and the gas mileage is not great, averaging around 22 mpg. Additionally, after only 5 years, the power windows have started to slow down. The Passlock system is a major issue, causing the car to not start at all. This has left my husband stranded and late for work on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, GM has not offered a recall for this common and entirely their fault issue. It's important to be aware of these issues before considering purchasing this car.

I really like the car overall, it's a great value for under $20,000. However, I do have some concerns about the design and construction. For example, the hood blocks the outward movement of the wipers, making it difficult to clean the lower windshield. Additionally, the transmission lever in PARK makes it hard to use the heater knobs, which are also located under an overhang from the radio, making some of the selections difficult to see. Lastly, the carpet in the driver's compartment was cut too narrow, leaving a gap between the edge of the compartment and the carpeting. It would have been better if a properly fitting piece of carpet had been installed.

I understand the struggle of finding a comfortable car when you're 6' with long legs, but the Malibu Classic has been a great fit for me. With its power seat and peppy 4 cylinder engine, it strikes the perfect balance between price, comfort, and performance. And let's not forget the unbeatable price of $11k with less than 16k miles!

I recently purchased this car in 2010 after my old car broke down. Despite my bad credit, I was fortunate enough to secure this vehicle from a dealership. It had 67,000 miles on it and was well-maintained with no dents or damage to the body. The interior was also in good condition. The car drives nicely and has plenty of room, including a spacious trunk. Although I did notice some squeaking from the front end, I have no other complaints so far.

Your car sounds like a reliable ride! A 2005 Chevy Malibu classic that you've owned for almost four years now. It's great to hear that it hasn't required much maintenance besides brakes, tires, and suspension due to its age. You mentioned that it gets you from point A to point B with no issues, which is fantastic! It's clear that Chevy did an amazing job building these cars.

I use the car for a carpool of 4 people and I'm happy to report that I get between 26 and 29 MPG while hauling about 775 pounds. I always try to drive it conservatively to make the most out of it. I'm hoping to get about 7 years of driving with it and I'm confident it will deliver. I've had the engine oil gaskets replaced under warranty, but overall it's been a reliable car.
