Common Chevrolet Classic problems

Chevrolet Classic Cars: Common Problems and Complaints

Chevrolet has produced numerous classic cars over the years, some of which have been plagued by various issues and complaints from their owners. Here are some of the most common problems found in Chevrolet classic cars, based on complaints from owners and expert opinions:

  • Triumph Stag: The Triumph Stag, produced from 1970 to 1977, is known for its mechanical unreliability, primarily due to its engine frequently overheating. This can lead to expensive repairs and maintenance costs.
  • Triumph TR7 (1974-1981): This UK sports car has poor brakes and is prone to electrical issues, making it unreliable and potentially unsafe. Finding replacement parts can also be a challenge, further reducing its appeal.
  • Cadillac Eldorado (1980-1985): Early models of the Cadillac Eldorado have experienced various mechanical issues, including engine and transmission problems. This, combined with changing consumer preferences and a decrease in demand, has caused the value of these vehicles to plummet.
  • Ford Mustang II (1974-1986): This classic car lacks power compared to similar vehicles, making it less appealing and valuable in the market. Its overall market value is relatively low compared to what you're getting.
  • Jensen Interceptor (1966-1976): The Jensen Interceptor is prone to rust issues and has high fuel consumption, making it impractical and expensive for everyday use.
  • Cadillac Seville (1976-1980): These models are notorious for their Oldsmobile-sourced 350 diesel engine, which was prone to failure. Overall demand for these vehicles has also diminished, further reducing resale value.
  • Chevrolet Vega (1971-1977): The Vega is one of Chevrolet's most controversial cars, with engine issues causing the engines to seriously overheat and potentially melt from within. Coolant recovery tanks were not standard until the 1973 model year, and even then, they were only equipped on certain models.

While these issues can be concerning for potential buyers, it's important to note that many classic car enthusiasts enjoy the process of restoring and maintaining these vehicles. With the right knowledge, resources, and dedication, many of these problems can be addressed and overcome.

  • VIN: 1G1ND52F95M
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE THEFT BYPASS SYSTEM, ON MY 2005 CHEVY CLASSIC. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL. IT WAS FOR THE IGNITION KEY ROTATION. WHEN I BROUGHT MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP, I TOLD THEM THAT I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR (SUDDENLY) DYING. I TOLD THEM THAT IT HAD DIED WHEN I WAS ON THE FREEWAY (TWICE), WHILE DRIVING ON THE CITY STREETS, AND IN MY DRIVEWAY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. THIS PAST FRIDAY, LATE IN THE EVENING, MY CAR (SUDDENLY) DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION. THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD, THE DRIVERS AROUND ME WERE PAYING ATTENTION -- I COULD HAVE BEEN IN AN AWFUL ACCIDENT. SEVERAL PEOPLE, KINDLY, PUSHED MY CAR INTO A PARKING LOT. WHILE IN THE PARKING LOT, A MECHANIC STOPPED TO LOOK AT THE CAR. HE TOLD ME THAT MY CHEVY IS WELL KNOWN FOR HAVING A DEFECTIVE PASS-LOCK SENSOR SECURITY SYSTEM, WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SHUT DOWN SUDDENLY. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE MIGHT BE A RECALL. YET, I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND THAT INFORMATION -- GM IS NOT HELPFUL! AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, THE CAR STILL WOULDN'T START. I HAD A FRIEND TOW ME HOME. I AM OLDER AND DISABLED AND MUST HAVE A RELIABLE VEHICLE. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE TO MY DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, VIA THE FREEWAY. YET, I HAVE (ALREADY) EXPERIENCED MY CAR (SUDDENLY) DYING ON THE FREEWAY. I AM TERRIFIED OF GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT AND (POSSIBLY) HURTING/KILLING MYSELF AND/OR SOMEONE ELSE. I, TRULY, BELIEVE THAT THIS DEFECT IS GM'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX FREE OF CHARGE. OR, PERHAPS THERE IS A RECALL THAT I'M UNAWARE OF? EITHER WAY, PLEASE HELP ME. I AM THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE.

  • Summary: MY FUEL LEVEL GAUGE IS MALFUNCTIONING. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE HAD THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY REPLACED AND THE IN DASH GAUGES CHECKED, IT WILL NOT REGISTER PAST 1/4 TANK. AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 150 MILES THE GAUGE WILL SUDDENLY DROP, THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WILL COME ON. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND ON, IT WILL AGAIN READ 1/4 TANK EVEN WHEN FULL. THE VEHICLE IS ALMOST ALWAYS IN MOTION WHEN THIS OCCURS.

  • Summary: I ARRIVED AT WORK AND WAS TOLD BY COWORKERS THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE STILL ON. THEY WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. I REMOVED THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL TO AVOID DRAINING MY BATTERY. ON THE DRIVE HOME, AFTER RECONNECTING BATTERY, I DISCOVERED MY CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING EITHER. I SAW ON THE INTERNET A RECALL (GM 13036) THAT COVERED THIS EXACT PROBLEM ON SEVERAL MODELS INCLUDING THE MALIBU WHICH MY CAR NEARLY IDENTICAL TO. UNFORTUNATELY IT DOES NOT COVER MY MODEL AND IT SHOULD! CLEARLY THIS IS A WIDESPREAD ISSUE AND 2005 CLASSIC SHOULD BE INCLUDED. I CURRENTLY AM DRIVING WITH THE LIGHTS STUCK ON AND HAVE TO DISCONNECT / CONNECT BATTERY TERMINAL EVERY TIME I DRIVE.

  • VIN: 1G1ND52F25M
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I HEARD SOME CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT END. WAS TOLD BY A CHAIN REPAIR SHOP THAT THE STRUTS PROBABLY NEEDED REPLACING. I THOUGHT IT WAS TOO LOUD FOR THAT, BUT I TRUSTED THEIR OPINION. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS WAY OFF CENTER. AS I WENT TO MAKE A U-TURN, I LOST STEERING COMPLETELY. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MOVE OUT OF TRAFFIC SAFELY WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. OBVIOUSLY, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER ON THE FREEWAY. THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE MOUNTING TABS FOR THE STEERING GEAR WHERE EVERYTHING IS ATTACHED RUSTED OUT COMPLETELY FROM THE SUBFRAME AND NEEDED A CRADLE SO HE COULD RE-ATTACH THE STEERING COMPONENTS. ALSO, THE STEERING RACK WAS DAMAGED IN THE PROCESS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL. TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS WAS $1390, WHICH WAS ACHIEVED BECAUSE OF FINDING USED PARTS.

  • Summary: I HAD TAKEN MY SON TO THE DR. AND THE CAR HAD BEEN TURNED OFF FOR LESS THAN 10 MINUTES. WHEN WE CAME BACK OUT, THE CAR WOULDN'T START. IT WOULD TURN OVER BUT WOULDN'T FIRE UP. AFTER SITTING IN THE BLAZING SUN WITH MY SICK CHILD FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES, A FRIEND CAME TO ASSIST US. THE FUEL PUMP WAS KICKING ON, WE CLEANED THE INTAKE AND CHANGED THE AIR FILTER WITH NO LUCK. WITH STARTER FLUID THE ENGINE WOULD FIRE UP BUT DIED AS SOON AS THE FLUID BURNT OFF. BEFORE HAVING IT TOWED HOME WE RESEARCHED IT ONLINE AND FOUND SEVERAL REFERENCES TO THE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM GLITCH. SURE ENOUGH, AFTER LEAVING THE KEY IN THE ON POSITION FOR 10 MINUTES,WITHOUT TRYING TO START THE CAR, WE TURNED THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN TRIED TO START THE CAR. IT FIRED RIGHT UP. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME 3 TIMES SINCE THEN. ONE TIME I HAD TO GO THROUGH THOSE STEPS 3 TIMES TO GET THE CAR TO START. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WITH 2 CHILDREN. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD IF WE GET STRANDED IN THE EXTREME HEAT OR COLD OR CANNOT UTILIZE THE CAR IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS ISSUE AMENDED.

  • VIN: 1G1ND52F94M
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS PROBLEMS WITH ITS STARTER. I'M NOT SURE OF THE FIRST DATE IT WAS NOTICED. INITIALLY THE KEY WOULD GET STUCK IN THE IGNITION, IT WOULD TAKE UP TO 1/2 HR OR MORE FOR THE KEY TO COME OUT, THEN LONGER, THEN DAYS IN WHICH THE BATTERY WOULD HAVE TO BE RECHARGED. IT ALSO ON OCCASION WOULD ACTIVATE THE 'KILL-SWITCH' ON THE ALARM. WE WERE TOLD BY CHEVY THAT THE CAR WAS NOT 'RECOGNIZING' THE IGNITION KEY. FINALLY AFTER THE MONEY WAS AVAILABLE, THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO CHEVY FOR REPAIR. INITIALLY IT WAS FINE...THE KEY DIDN'T GET STUCK, THEN ONLY A FEW TIMES ...NONE IN WHICH IT DIDN'T COME OUT....HOWEVER, THE CAR IN 2013? BEGAN TO DIE WHILE BEING DRIVEN. MY SON AND FINANCE' BOUGH THIS TO MY ATTENTION AND FOR SAFETY I NO LONGER DRIVE THE CAR AS THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS IN TRAFFIC, FORTUNATELY, WE WERE ABLE TO STEER INTO A PARKING LOT AND PARK THE CAR. IT WOULD RESTART WITHOUT A PROBLEM.....BUT NOT KNOWING WHY OR WHEN IT WILL STOP WAS/IS TO MUCH OF A RISK SO WE TURNED IN THE REGISTRATION. WE TOLD CHEVY, WROTE ...BUT NO ONE HAS EVERY RESPONDED. I AM NOT SURE WHY THIS VEHICLE IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST FOR ITS IGNITION PROBLEM AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO FIND OUT WHO ELSE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. DUE TO ITS CONDITION, I CAN'T SELL IT OR DRIVE IT. YOUR HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

Although there have been some challenges with this car, I am confident in my ability to address them. Last summer, I replaced the face plate on the a/c to ensure it was properly connected to the power source. I have also been working to address some electronic issues that may be related to the anti-theft system and sealing. While there have been some leaks during heavy rain, I am confident that I can find a solution to this issue. Overall, I am confident that with some attention and care, this car can be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to own.

Although my Malibu had some recent repairs, unfortunately the engine failed at 150,000 miles. While it was good on gas, it struggled on inclines and I found it to be cheaply made. In my opinion, there may be better options available. Thank you for considering my experience.

I recently inherited this car from my Mom, and it has been a reliable ride so far. It has 90K original miles and has been in a minor accident before, but overall it's in good condition. Although I have some reservations about cars made by the Big Three, I have to say that this one has proven me wrong. The drivetrain can be a bit noisy, but the road noise is acceptable. The car has enough power, but the shifting could be smoother. There is a slight vibration when idling in gear, which might be due to the engine mounts, but I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. Apparently, this is a common issue with the 04-05 Classics (although it's worth noting that this car isn't a real Malibu, just manufactured under that name and mainly used by rental companies). With proper maintenance, I'm hoping to get another 100K miles out of this car. My previous car was a 99 Camry LE 4 cyl. with 300K miles on it, and it ran like a dream, so I might be a bit biased.

This car has been a disappointment in many ways. It can be difficult to drive, and the gas mileage is not great, averaging around 22 mpg. Additionally, after only 5 years, the power windows have started to slow down. The Passlock system is a major issue, causing the car to not start at all. This has left my husband stranded and late for work on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, GM has not offered a recall for this common and entirely their fault issue. It's important to be aware of these issues before considering purchasing this car.

  5. Braden Kozey 2024-04-07

Let's talk about the climate control system. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it in the past. I have brought the car in a few times while it was under warranty, and a few more times after the warranty expired. I have also had some trouble with the security system, as it tends to go off quite frequently. I am actually writing this review while waiting for the alarm system to reset. Overall, I think the car has some areas that could use improvement, but I hope Chevy will be able to address these issues soon.

    Vehicle year: 2005

I really like the car overall, it's a great value for under $20,000. However, I do have some concerns about the design and construction. For example, the hood blocks the outward movement of the wipers, making it difficult to clean the lower windshield. Additionally, the transmission lever in PARK makes it hard to use the heater knobs, which are also located under an overhang from the radio, making some of the selections difficult to see. Lastly, the carpet in the driver's compartment was cut too narrow, leaving a gap between the edge of the compartment and the carpeting. It would have been better if a properly fitting piece of carpet had been installed.

I understand the struggle of finding a comfortable car when you're 6' with long legs, but the Malibu Classic has been a great fit for me. With its power seat and peppy 4 cylinder engine, it strikes the perfect balance between price, comfort, and performance. And let's not forget the unbeatable price of $11k with less than 16k miles!

  3. Isai Fritsch 2024-10-24

I recently purchased this car in 2010 after my old car broke down. Despite my bad credit, I was fortunate enough to secure this vehicle from a dealership. It had 67,000 miles on it and was well-maintained with no dents or damage to the body. The interior was also in good condition. The car drives nicely and has plenty of room, including a spacious trunk. Although I did notice some squeaking from the front end, I have no other complaints so far.

Your car sounds like a reliable ride! A 2005 Chevy Malibu classic that you've owned for almost four years now. It's great to hear that it hasn't required much maintenance besides brakes, tires, and suspension due to its age. You mentioned that it gets you from point A to point B with no issues, which is fantastic! It's clear that Chevy did an amazing job building these cars.

  5. Terrance Ryan 2024-06-29

    Vehicle year: 2005

I use the car for a carpool of 4 people and I'm happy to report that I get between 26 and 29 MPG while hauling about 775 pounds. I always try to drive it conservatively to make the most out of it. I'm hoping to get about 7 years of driving with it and I'm confident it will deliver. I've had the engine oil gaskets replaced under warranty, but overall it's been a reliable car.
