Cadillac Deville problems
The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.
For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.
Early history
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.
The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.
The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.
In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

- Summary: [ ] I had purchased my car used. I found that there was a recall on this model. I went online and ran the vin # and confirmed that. I called the dealership and explained they looked it up and confirmed it needed to have the original plastic fuel rail replaced with a new stainless steel fuel rail. They informed me that they had to order the parts from Michigan an it would be 2 weeks for the parts to get here and then we could set up an appointment to bring the car in. over 2 weeks later they called and we set up the appointment I had started the car the morning of the appointment for it to go to the dealership. I needed to grab something from in the house so I turned it off to go back in my house. I was answering a text on my phone and as I looked up to get out of the car there were flames coming out from between the fender and the hood. I rushed to the front of the car to put the flames out.. I just got the car a d couldn't afford to let turn to the ground. I took off my hoodie and used it to UT out the flames while doing so the hood came down and hit me in the back of my head,I burned my left hand pretty badly and burnt off my arm hair. I have had a ringing in my ears since I was hit in the head. I called the dealer and told them what happened and I would have to get it towed in. They said okay it took three days to get a tow truck because we had a snow storm. The tow companies were booked. I got the car to the dealer and exspected them to start the job. The parts were ordered and there. It had been over 3 weeks now that had gone by since I first talked to the dealership and they ordered the parts I waS waiting for. Now the car has been there for over a 2 weeks and not even been touched . I was finally told by the service department to call customer service about the recall. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). As someone who grew up in the sixties, I have always admired the iconic Cadillac brand. When I was a kid, nothing compared to a Cadillac. As I approached 45 years old, I looked at everything from BMW to Jaguar to Mercedes Benz when I was looking to buy a car. However, my wife had earned 2 pink Cadillacs in 02 & 04 while working for a major cosmetic company, and that's where I fell in love with the Deville. It had everything I wanted in a car: style, prestige, comfort, performance, and reliability. The DTS ticked all the boxes for me, so I found my bronzemist DTS and brought her home. Five years later, I'm still in love with her.

Hi there! I wanted to share with you my experience with my car. I bought it last year and it has been such a joy to drive! It has great acceleration and saves me a lot of gas. The only issue I had was with the fuel pressure, but I got it fixed and it's been running smoothly ever since. I have to say, it's the best car I've ever had! I love it so much that I don't think I'll ever sell it, even though I might consider trading it for a newer model. Thanks for listening!

I bought this car with 114,500 miles and now it has 132,000. I am happy to report that I have had absolutely no problems of any kind, and it still feels as tight as a brand new car. My gas mileage is 16.8 in town (avg.), and 24.7 on the freeway (avg.). On a recent freeway trip from Portland OR to Eugene OR, I achieved as much as 31.2 mpg with the cruise control set the whole 128 miles at 55 mph. With proper care and maintenance, I am confident that I will surpass the 292,000 miles I put on my 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. I wouldn't be surprised if I make it to 350,000-400,000. In my opinion, these 93 coupes are way undervalued, as there were only 4,127 of the 2 door models made. They are such excellent, safe, reliable, and powerful cars.

I love the comfort of my car, but unfortunately, I have had some expensive repairs despite it having less than 30,000 miles. Three out of four window chains have broken and needed to be replaced, which was quite costly. Additionally, the air injection pump had to be replaced, and there was a strange odor coming through my ventilation system, which turned out to be bacteria in the lines that needed to be disinfected. The plexi-glass over the speedometer is all streaked, which is quite puzzling. Lastly, my engine motor mounts are loose, and unfortunately, none of these items were covered under warranty or recalled. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my car.

This has been an excellent automobile for us. Its safety features are most impressive. We had a close call with a semi while going around a corner, but the Deville reacted perfectly. The braking, steering, and suspension all functioned superbly as we had to leave the road through a dirt/gravel turnout. We were able to slow the car to a stop, change our underwear, and continue on our trip. I never used to think much about safety, but now it's always on my mind.

Cadillac introduced an all-new front-drive Deville for 1985. The car received an extensive update for 1989, and another mild facelift in 1991. The 1993 model was the last year before the 1994 re-design. The Deville boasts remarkable acceleration for a large front-drive vehicle, and the interior room is hard to beat, making it a comfortable ride for drivers of all sizes. The overall design has held up very well, and the '91 - '93 Deville still looks contemporary today. While composite front fenders have been known to crack, used parts are plentiful, and rust through on the A-pillar (particularly at the front-door hinges) is something to look for. With its long model run, the Deville is a reliable and practical choice for drivers.

While I have owned three Cadillacs in the past, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with fluid leaks and other mechanical problems. Despite these challenges, I appreciate the comfort and style that Cadillacs offer. However, my most recent Cadillac had some persistent issues that ultimately led me to part ways with the car.

I purchased my 1999 Cadillac DeVille Concours in Reno, Nevada. It was previously owned and had 77,000 miles on it when it was traded in. Since then, I have put 43,000 miles on it and it has been a pleasure to drive on long trips. Although I have had a constant SES sign, the Cadillac forum has assured me that it is nothing to worry about. The Northstar engine is known to have an oil leak, which I plan to fix in the future. Despite this, I have not experienced any other issues and have regularly changed the oil. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed driving this vehicle and look forward to many more comfortable rides in the future.

This is my third Cadillac and from my experience, it's all a roll of the dice! Some are built to last with minimal repairs, and others will make you pull your hair out! Routine maintenance plays a critical role in the life of your Caddy. If you're buying a used Caddy, make sure it comes with an eligible extended warranty. Also, check the GM inquiry report to learn more about your Caddy's reliability. Overall, the car is great. For me, the third time's a charm. I've paid my dues to Cadillac. Remember to do your research, inspect your Caddy daily, and keep up with routine maintenance.

I have thoroughly inspected this vehicle and have identified several issues that require attention. Despite flushing the cooling system, occasional over-heating persists, and there are oil leaks that are unfortunately cost-prohibitive to repair. Additionally, the fuel system treatments have not improved the city fuel efficiency, which remains at only about 10-12 MPG. Furthermore, the electronic fuel display is erratic, fluctuating by several gallons within minutes. However, I am confident that with the appropriate repairs and maintenance, this vehicle can be restored to optimal performance.
