Cadillac Deville problems

cadillac logo

The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.

For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.

Early history

The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.

The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.

The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.

In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

  • VIN: 1G6KD54Y23U
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THE ABS & TRACTION CONTROL INDICATORS COME UP ON THE SCREEN ALONG WITH CHECK AS I'M DRIVING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS MY BRAKES MAKE A WEIRD SOUND LIKE A SPRUNG SPRING AND THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY'RE GONE BUT THEY'RE NOT. IT'S SCARY BE SURE I FEEL I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STOP WHICH TO ME IS A SAFETY HAZARD. NO CODES SHOW EVEN THOUGH THE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON, BUT NONE OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS EVER STAY ON VERY LONG, IT'S OFF AND ON , OFF AND ON, JUST POPS UP OCCASIONALLY, ALL 3 TOGETHER EVERY TIME. IT MAY GO DAYS BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO POP UP ON THE DASH AGAIN. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPEN I WAS JUST HEADING OUT FOR WORK SO THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THE PRIOR DAY IT WAS STABLE ON LEVEL GROUND AS I STARTED BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. WHEN I REACHED THE POINT TO APPLY THE BRAKES THAT'S WHEN THE WEIRD BAKED SOUND ACCOMPANIED BY THE BRAKE PADDLE FEELING LIKE MY BRAKES WEREN'T WORKING AND DASH LIGHTS APPEARED. THIS HAPPENS DURING BRAKING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR,/ MONITOR THING COULD BE THE CAUSE. THAT'S ANOTHER THING. WHY HAVE TIRE PRESSURE EFFECT THE WORKABILITY 9F MY BRAKES AND TRACTION CONTROL? THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH TIRE PRESSURE. ALSO THE ELECTRIC REAR WINDOWS SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE SINCE DAY ONE. EVERY OWNER OF THE 03 CADILLAC DEVILLE HAS COMPLAINED OF THE WINDOWS JUST FALLING OUT OF PLACE BOTH OUTSIDE & INSIDE THE DOOR FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN A BAD DESIGN DEFECT. WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMERS CONTINUE TO REPLACE THE WINDOWS AT NO FAULT OF OURS? GM HAS KNOWN OF THIS ISSUE FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF MANUFACTURING, YET IT IS US, THE BUYERS, CONSUMERS THAT ARE PAYING AND NOT JUST OUT OF MONEY BUT THE RISK OF BROKEN GLASS HURTING A BACKSEAT PASSENGER A CHILD OR ADULT THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A LAW SUITE FOR GM. THIS IS WHY IT DEFINITELY SHOULD BE A RECALL.

Latest 5 recalls Cadillac Deville

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 58 recalls for different components of the Cadillac Deville. You can explore the year of the Volkswagen Jetta you are interested in by selecting it from the list.

  • Model: Cadillac Deville 2000
  • Report Received Date: 2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. With only 2500 miles on the clock, there is a noticeable whining and whistling sound coming from the passenger compartment. Despite changing the differential and other parts, the origin of the issue remains unclear. It is possible that the issue lies within the transmission. However, it is important to note that this is not a reflection of Cadillac's quality.

This car has been a bit of a challenge for me. Since I've owned it from 2001, I've had to replace the catalytic converter three times. Unfortunately, it broke down twice, once in Connecticut and once in New Hampshire, and I had to find a dealer to tow it to. The first time it broke down, I was lucky to be near a dealer in Massachusetts. I have to keep a close eye on the oil levels because it tends to use a lot. The dealer said this is normal, but it's still a bit of a hassle. On the other hand, my 1995 Cadillac runs really smoothly. I'm not sure if I'll buy another Cadillac, maybe I'll consider a foreign car even though I said I never would. Goodbye to Detroit!

Overall, I liked the car. However, the vibration and hard suspension were wearing. After driving 900 miles, I was exhausted. My '93 Cadillac drove like a dream. I could drive 1000 miles and still be able to walk! This one, forget it! I'm exhausted! The road control is not as good as the '93, with more swerve on curves. I had A/C problems that my dealer was not able to correct, who I purchased the car from. Now, after spending $859.00, I still have a car that misses or has a bad transmission. I love the space this car has, but I don't like the dealer I have, and he is the only one within 50 miles. The Cadillac DeVille is not the car it once was. I've owned 3.

My wife took excellent care of her Cadillac, treating it with kid gloves and keeping it garaged from day one. However, at only 63K, it began overheating and we knew we had a problem. Our local mechanic performed what was known as the triple play, replacing the water pump, thermostat, and upper crossover gaskets. Unfortunately, it turned out that the engine's head gaskets were blown, and a local Cadillac dealer quoted me $7,500.00 to replace them. Although GM knew that some of their Northstar engines were blowing head gaskets, they failed to take any action. The issue was caused by the aluminum heads on steel blocks and temperature changes for the two different metals. Their bolts were too short, and the bite in the steel blocks didn't hold. Fortunately, Norm Huhn (huhnsolutions.com) held the patent on fixing that engine's problem, as well as sourcing a local Cadillac mechanic who knew how to properly fix the problem. It takes three days to fix the car since it has to be lifted off the engine once everything from the engine has been disconnected. Anyway, our 2000 Cadillac DHS Sedan Deville now runs just fine, just like the day my wife drove it out of the dealer's showroom. There is life after blown head gaskets on these Cadillacs, and it's just a matter of contacting Norm for his insert kit and finding a mechanic who knows how to do the job properly. Other than that and replacing most of the sensors, this car has a brand new life and much more to go. It only cost me $3K to replace the heads properly on this Northstar engine, and it runs great! The key takeaway is that with the right resources and expertise, it's possible to get your car back on the road and running like new again.

This car has more power than I am used to, but it rides great on the open road. However, it can be difficult to maneuver in an urban setting. It seems like this car is built for larger people, which unfortunately doesn't include someone my size.

I bought this vehicle when I turned 40 and it's been a dream come true! Although there were some issues due to the previous owner's neglect, my CADDY has been a loyal companion. The only downside is the cost of premium gas, but it's a small price to pay for such a wonderful car. When the time comes to upgrade, I'll definitely be searching for another Cadillac!

Powerful; great acceleration. This vehicle is a highway cruiser and very comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised by the great mileage, achieving 27 on the highway and 18-20 around town. Overall, it's a great vehicle!

I've owned a few vehicles in my short life, but I've never had a truly fine automobile until I bought my Cadillac. It's easy to clean and always catches the eye of everyone who looks my way. I'll always be a Cadillac fan!

This is my fourth Cadillac and, like the past three, I totally love it. I feel very safe in it, as it is very reliable and extremely comfortable. Most of my driving is done on the interstates, so its handling suits me just fine. All of my Cadillacs have been trouble-free, requiring only normal maintenance. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.

I have owned this car almost 9 years and it has been a great car to drive. At 62,000 miles new head gasket, transm. 70,000, other then that no problems. Other then usual wear and tear. Vehicle is clean, get's 18 miles in town, & around 28 on the HW. Everything works fine. Vogue tires with 6/32 on front and 7/32 on rear tires. Driven mostly on HW, Paint has great glow, garage kept, and had paint protection done first 5 years. Most driving done with other car in the city.
