Cadillac Deville problems

The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.
For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.
Early history
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.
The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.
The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.
In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

- Summary: THE ABS & TRACTION CONTROL INDICATORS COME UP ON THE SCREEN ALONG WITH CHECK AS I'M DRIVING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS MY BRAKES MAKE A WEIRD SOUND LIKE A SPRUNG SPRING AND THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY'RE GONE BUT THEY'RE NOT. IT'S SCARY BE SURE I FEEL I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STOP WHICH TO ME IS A SAFETY HAZARD. NO CODES SHOW EVEN THOUGH THE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON, BUT NONE OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS EVER STAY ON VERY LONG, IT'S OFF AND ON , OFF AND ON, JUST POPS UP OCCASIONALLY, ALL 3 TOGETHER EVERY TIME. IT MAY GO DAYS BEFORE THEY DECIDE TO POP UP ON THE DASH AGAIN. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPEN I WAS JUST HEADING OUT FOR WORK SO THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THE PRIOR DAY IT WAS STABLE ON LEVEL GROUND AS I STARTED BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. WHEN I REACHED THE POINT TO APPLY THE BRAKES THAT'S WHEN THE WEIRD BAKED SOUND ACCOMPANIED BY THE BRAKE PADDLE FEELING LIKE MY BRAKES WEREN'T WORKING AND DASH LIGHTS APPEARED. THIS HAPPENS DURING BRAKING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR,/ MONITOR THING COULD BE THE CAUSE. THAT'S ANOTHER THING. WHY HAVE TIRE PRESSURE EFFECT THE WORKABILITY 9F MY BRAKES AND TRACTION CONTROL? THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH TIRE PRESSURE. ALSO THE ELECTRIC REAR WINDOWS SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE SINCE DAY ONE. EVERY OWNER OF THE 03 CADILLAC DEVILLE HAS COMPLAINED OF THE WINDOWS JUST FALLING OUT OF PLACE BOTH OUTSIDE & INSIDE THE DOOR FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN A BAD DESIGN DEFECT. WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMERS CONTINUE TO REPLACE THE WINDOWS AT NO FAULT OF OURS? GM HAS KNOWN OF THIS ISSUE FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF MANUFACTURING, YET IT IS US, THE BUYERS, CONSUMERS THAT ARE PAYING AND NOT JUST OUT OF MONEY BUT THE RISK OF BROKEN GLASS HURTING A BACKSEAT PASSENGER A CHILD OR ADULT THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A LAW SUITE FOR GM. THIS IS WHY IT DEFINITELY SHOULD BE A RECALL.

Vehicle year: 1990
My dad gave me this car as he had to almost pay the dealership to take it. I'm 30 with two kids, so having a car without payments is a plus. To my surprise, this car is amazing despite the downsides of gas mileage and locks for the car seats. The car has great reliability and I can fix 90% of the problems myself as everything isn't computerized like my 2003 Impala. The ride is good and the car has nice features for a 1990 model, even more so than my 2003. The engine is solid and powerful, making it a really good car.

Vehicle year: 1998
I'm so glad I bought this car! Even after wrecking my Infinity in an ice storm, I haven't regretted my decision one bit. The ride is incredibly smooth and the seats are so comfortable. Plus, everything is right at my fingertips for easy adjustment. I'm also thrilled with the fantastic fuel usage - I get 18-21 mpg in town and 26-28 mpg on the highway driving the speed limit. And the best part? I've only spent less than $3500 on maintenance, including the regular 3000 mile check up, oil change, and new tires. Despite all of this, the body is still beautiful and shiny!

Vehicle year: 2003
I purchased my Deville 7 years ago with around 35K miles and it has been a reliable car for long trips, providing comfort and smooth handling on the highway. However, I have experienced some issues with faulty sensors, including oil pressure, engine temperature, airbag, steering, and tire pressure sensors. Although the components were not at fault, the sensors caused some inconvenience. Another common issue among owners is the power window motor failing. The electronic switches and displays could be of better quality. Despite these issues, the car is still enjoyable to drive on long trips. It depreciated quickly, so I would not consider buying a new one in the future. As of 7/6/2016, I still have the car and enjoy driving it. Unfortunately, the latest 'service engine' light came on and revealed the need to replace the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid, which is an expensive repair. Many other Cadillac owners have reported the same issue, and GM has made little to no changes to address these recurring problems in subsequent model years. I am disappointed with the company's lack of action and will avoid buying a Cadillac in the future.

My great-aunt gave me this car in 2015 when she stopped driving. I had previously driven my mom's Toyota Avalon and 1998 Suburban, so driving an extremely long sedan was not a problem for me. I could even parallel park it if I needed to, but getting out of tight spots required multiple point turns. When I first got the car, it rode like a dream. It had the smoothest, softest ride I've ever experienced, and there was very little road noise. She loved going fast and I got pulled over for going 86 mph on a highway because I didn't realize how fast I was going! I never got her mpg over 26 on road trips and it hovered around 13 in the city, which was not ideal. Fortunately, the big gas tank meant not having to fill up too often. She was absolutely a road trip car. During the four years I had her, I spent about 200 hours putting about 16,000 miles on her in road trips alone. She got me safely between Georgia, Ohio, and Texas every time I had to travel. I found the seats extremely comfortable (I'm 5'7From the outside, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but unfortunately, the ride was never as smooth after that. During the 2018/2019 school year, the air conditioner stopped working completely, which made for an uncomfortable drive from Texas to Ohio in May 2019. When I was almost at my destination in Ohio, the car overheated while I was sitting idle in a parking lot. I managed to get where I was going, but once I got the car to a shop, I found out that there was a leak in the head gasket. Repairing it would have cost much more than the car was worth since the engine would have to be removed. The entire air conditioning system needed replacing as well, so I sold the car for parts to the mechanic. If you're looking to buy a car like this, it's important to look at the maintenance history. The head gasket leak is a known issue with the North Star engines used in Devilles from 2005 and earlier. If it's already been repaired, the car is probably solid. But if it hasn't happened yet, it's only a matter of time, and you'll be stuck with a car you can't use without shelling out more money than it's worth. Otherwise, it's a great car to drive and is very spacious.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2005 DTS! It sounds like a fantastic car with plenty of space for you and your passengers. The gas mileage is impressive for a car of its size, and it's great to hear that it has all the options and gadgets you love. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us, and we hope you continue to enjoy your DTS for years to come!

I purchased my dream car, a 1998 Cadillac DeVille, upon retirement. However, the car has been a nightmare to maintain. Despite acquiring the car with only 43,000 miles, I have had to replace several parts. At 47,900 miles, I replaced the battery and cable for a total cost of $535.14. Additionally, at 49,600 miles, I replaced the spark plugs and AC compressor for a total cost of $959.69. Finally, at 61,000 miles, I replaced the HVAC blower motor for $430.08. Although I refused to use a Cadillac dealer for the repairs, the cost of OEM parts and dealer labor is still exorbitant. Regrettably, I have decided to sell my dream car as I refuse to be taken advantage of any longer.

The car has some great features that are worth mentioning. Firstly, it's surprisingly fast for its size and can easily keep up with smaller cars like the Civic SI. Secondly, it has decent fuel efficiency, achieving 23MPG all around and over 30MPG on the highway if you drive sensibly. Thirdly, the bench seats are incredibly comfortable and spacious, making it easy to fit all your friends in the back seat. Fourthly, it gives you a sense of safety and security while driving. Lastly, it handles potholes and bumps on the road with ease. However, there were some issues that the previous owner faced. The car had overheating issues due to a faulty thermostat, which was resolved by replacing it with one made for a different engine. The tail lights didn't work in the rain, and the alarm would randomly go off. The power window motors had to be replaced twice before finding suitable ones. The exhaust rotted off the bottom of the car, and the quality of the interior materials could have been better. Lastly, the car had some electrical issues and even caught fire once. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's still a decent choice for those who prioritize comfort and safety.Verdict: These cars can be fantastic for people who have some automotive repair skills or live in areas with less traffic. If you live in the middle of mid-town Manhattan, it's better to look for a Fleetwood as the Fleetwood LT1 has a much better engine. However, if you are stuck with one of these for whatever reason, keep an eye out for coolant leaks, oil leaks, transmission slips, and overheating. Before buying, have the person start and run the car and wait for the coolant fans to kick in. Most of these cars are marketed as needing a

There's nothing quite like a drive in a Cadillac. The exterior is unique and the interior is spacious. It certainly turns heads, especially since I'm only 25 and own one for pleasure driving. The 4.6L engine with 300 horses begs to be unleashed out on the open road.

I've owned this car for three years now and it has over 75,000 miles on it. On the day after I drove it home from the lot, the battery died, but the dealership replaced it for free right in my driveway. Although the battery they replaced it with leaked and caused a hole to burn through the bottom of the car, the dealership was quick to replace it. They also replaced the passenger window motor because the rear window dropped, but unfortunately, the motor is making noises now. Additionally, the seats are prone to staining and the dash instruments can be difficult to see due to glare. However, the car does have some great features, such as comfortable seats, a smooth ride, a quiet engine, and plenty of room and trunk space. While it may not be a performance car by any means, it's still a reliable and practical choice.

After purchasing our third Cadillac, I am disappointed with the engine reliability. It's burning oil at a rate of a quart every 100 miles or so. I have found other owners who have the same complaint, and it looks like I will have to take it in for an overhaul. Despite having only 45,000 miles on it, it uses this much oil. There is no leakage nor smoking that I can see. Unfortunately, this experience has left me doubtful about buying another Cadillac in the future.
