The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.
For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.
Early history
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.
The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.
The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.
In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

- Summary: [ ] I had purchased my car used. I found that there was a recall on this model. I went online and ran the vin # and confirmed that. I called the dealership and explained they looked it up and confirmed it needed to have the original plastic fuel rail replaced with a new stainless steel fuel rail. They informed me that they had to order the parts from Michigan an it would be 2 weeks for the parts to get here and then we could set up an appointment to bring the car in. over 2 weeks later they called and we set up the appointment I had started the car the morning of the appointment for it to go to the dealership. I needed to grab something from in the house so I turned it off to go back in my house. I was answering a text on my phone and as I looked up to get out of the car there were flames coming out from between the fender and the hood. I rushed to the front of the car to put the flames out.. I just got the car a d couldn't afford to let turn to the ground. I took off my hoodie and used it to UT out the flames while doing so the hood came down and hit me in the back of my head,I burned my left hand pretty badly and burnt off my arm hair. I have had a ringing in my ears since I was hit in the head. I called the dealer and told them what happened and I would have to get it towed in. They said okay it took three days to get a tow truck because we had a snow storm. The tow companies were booked. I got the car to the dealer and exspected them to start the job. The parts were ordered and there. It had been over 3 weeks now that had gone by since I first talked to the dealership and they ordered the parts I waS waiting for. Now the car has been there for over a 2 weeks and not even been touched . I was finally told by the service department to call customer service about the recall. WHY SHOULD THE CONSUMERS CONTINUE TO REPLACE THE WINDOWS AT NO FAULT OF OURS? GM HAS KNOWN OF THIS ISSUE FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF MANUFACTURING, YET IT IS US, THE BUYERS, CONSUMERS THAT ARE PAYING AND NOT JUST OUT OF MONEY BUT THE RISK OF BROKEN GLASS HURTING A BACKSEAT PASSENGER A CHILD OR ADULT THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME A LAW SUITE FOR GM. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). I purchased this car for $20,000 as it was coming off a lease program and it has been the best car I've ever had! Although I do wish I had gotten the extended warranty, I've only had to replace the a/c compressor, valve, one set of brakes, and one set of tires in ten years, in addition to regular oil changes. It still gets 20-22 mpg, is quiet, comfortable, easy to handle, and powerful. Although it costs $50+ to fill up, it's worth it because you really do get what you pay for. The sound system is superb and the dashboard and message center are great. I absolutely love this car and it's going to be hard to part with it. Compared to everything else out there, this car is simply the best!

I bought this car because it was a great deal and I needed a basic car to put miles on without adding too much wear and tear to my newer car. I paid under $600 for it and it had 135k miles on it. It's been about a year now and I can't believe how much I love this car. Despite having owned newer and more expensive cars, this almost 30-year-old car gets more attention and public praise than any of them. Whenever I'm gassing up, someone is bound to stop me and ask a few questions about it and what year it is. I meticulously maintain its appearance and make sure it's always clean and waxed. I have the 4.9L V8 motor, NOT the Northstar motor, and it is running strong without any leaks or issues at the moment. Since I bought it, I've only had to replace two rubber hoses which were causing a slow leak of oil/coolant and I've replaced the brake pads. I power washed the engine and make sure I change the oil religiously when the car's computer tells me to. This old engine runs fantastic and is very fast. I am absolutely in love with this car! It gets about 23mpg avg city/highway combined mileage and it's super comfy. I couldn't recommend this car enough for first-time drivers. It's big, safe, and easy to maintain with just oil changes and routine maintenance. Just make sure to check for rust issues, which is something any car of this age could potentially have. But for someone with limited means and a desire to make something last, I think this is a perfect car to try to make a daily driver with under $1000.

I recently purchased a 98 Deville D'elegance with only 62k miles from an older gentleman. The car was in great condition and had received all necessary maintenance, including a coolant flush, transmission filter fluid, new plugs and wires, brakes, and a rebuilt front end with new shocks, tie rod ends, and ball joints. This car is powerful and smooth, with many standard options that are not found in newer cars. While it may not be a sports car, it is a great cruiser that can easily outpace those pesky kids in their Honda's trying to pass you up. Living in Seattle, I have to deal with a lot of hills, so the MPG is around 16 no matter what I do. However, when I travel on the freeway with the tires inflated to 38 pounds, I can get up to 26mpg. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a comfortable and reliable ride.

This car looks and drives well. It's so quiet and smooth that it can make long trips a breeze. However, there were some issues with the engine burning oil at a high rate, but thankfully I had an extended warranty that covered the cost of repairs. Although there were some other minor issues with the car, I was able to get them fixed without too much trouble. I recently traded it in before the warranty expired, but overall it was a decent car with less than 70k miles.

I have experienced some issues with reliability, and unfortunately, the dealer's service has not been up to par. On multiple occasions, I had to provide detailed analysis to the service writer before they could fix the problem, resulting in multiple returns. These issues ranged from a taillight causing a short, to windshield washers not covering the full windshield, and even an oil leak that required the engine to be pulled. Additionally, there was a second leak and now there is a noise coming from the engine (possibly valve rattle?). There was even an instance where the washer tank was not hooked up, requiring another return. In my experience, owning a Cadillac may require frequent visits to the garage for service. On the other hand, my Lexus has only required oil changes.

I purchased this car back in May of 2007 with 53,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it since then. The power window motors stopped working and there was an oil leak caused by a faulty crank seal at 62,000 miles. During the repairs, the mechanic forgot to put a latch on the right front passenger wheel, which caused me to lose a wheel in a garage. Although the dealership did not refund me the money for the repairs, I am grateful that no one was hurt. Currently, the car is in the shop due to two blown head gaskets. I reached out to the Cadillac Customer Service department for assistance, but unfortunately, they were not able to help me out.

Cadillac has made great strides in recent years, but some may argue that it still has some catching up to do to be considered in the same class as European automobiles. While the ride may be softer and the handling may not be as sharp as some of its competitors, Cadillac has made significant improvements in these areas. It's unfortunate that some customers have had negative experiences with dealers, but I hope that they will continue to work towards providing better service.
