2019 Kia Sorento problems
The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.
First generation (BL; 2002)
2002–2006
Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

- Summary: Possible components/systems with issues: Engine, Suspension, Electrical, Emergency Parking Brake and Auto Hold, Back-Up Camera, Parking Collison Warning, et al Been trying to get my vehicle issues resolved. I have not been able to enjoy nor use my vehicle. I've had numerous repeat service appointments. I feel unsafe using the vehicle. Issues have almost caused accidents. It is now at the dealership and I've been in a loaner vehicle almost 3 months. 1. Suspension problems: I had to drive at reduced speeds and avoid highway usage. Poor driveability and rough handling. Felt like tires would pop off. 2. Oil consumption: Poor performance, reduced power and fuel economy. Check engine light came on. Dealership said I had no oil, history codes, and code for injector misfire. They cleared the codes, told me to come back if codes come back. Had me to do oil consumption tests every 1,000 miles which showed low oil levels. I had to restrict usage of my vehicle for the testing. They ultimately said someone did not properly do the testing and there was never an issue with oil consumption. I believe there was an issue. Check engine light keeps coming on. 3. Back-up camera was replaced for recall. New camera had issues causing inverted images, distorted views, and malfunctions with parking and blind spot sensors. Could not use camera. Took back to dealership multiple times, they checked and said they fixed it but it was not. 4. Emergency Parking Brake and Auto Hold Malfunction: Dashboard indicator for Auto hold malfunction and messages for activation/deactivation of emergency brake/Parking. Vehicle would stop abruptly while driving without notice. Almost caused several accidents. Auto hold would not function as designed so vehicle would keep moving when it was activated, however, the vehicle is not supposed to move when it is activated. Had to pull over, turn vehicle off and back on. Sometime it cleared, sometimes it didn't. Dealership could not replicate so had me record

- VIN: 5XYPHDA53KG
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Bought car with 36k miles on it in July 2023. In Jan 2024, engine light came on and we noticed loss of power shifting between gears, had fuel injectors replaced/cleaned. In Feb 2024 at 51k miles, car made knocking noise, pulled over and shut car off, would not restart. Towed to KIA dealer, told the engine was seized and crankshaft snapped. I had regular oil changes every 5,000 miles as recommended by KIA. KIA dealer showed sludge in the bottom of the oil and accused me of adding oil after the engine failed -- false. KIA would not provide any remedy and is charging me $12,000 to replace engine. Seeing other complaints here for the same issue leads me to believe that this is a known issue for KIA on these engines but it has not yet reached critical mass.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
- VIN: 5XYPGDA34KG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Oil light has come on intermittently, so we took the car into the Kia dealership in May before we hit 60k miles, the limit of our warranty. We were told they drained the oil, checked everything, and didn't find any issues. Oil light issue persisted so we took the car back to the dealership today (July 19) and the dealership has now acknowledged the crack in the engine where oil leaks into the oil pan. This is a widespread problem and should have been well known by the dealership. [XXX] ) However, dealer cannot do anything to fix the engine unless we pay - we were instructed to monitor the oil level and bring the car back regularly so they could read the computer codes to see if the engine starts to show any signs of rod bearing failure, since that code would justify Kia replacing the engine. In the meantime, they want us to keep driving it; the engine may seize, stall, fail, or simply catch fire. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2019 Kia Sorento recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2019 Kia Sorento.
- Manufacturer: Kia America, Inc.
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- Summary: Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2019 Sorento vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error, water may leak into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add additional water proofing to the camera harness, or replace the camera as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 8, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC282.

I really enjoy my Sorento, but I did discover one thing this winter. Unfortunately, it's not possible to start the car and let it warm up while it's locked. This can be a bit inconvenient, especially for those who live in apartment complexes and cannot leave their car unlocked. However, I have heard that this is a common issue with many car models. The dealership did suggest that I could get a remote start installed, but it is quite expensive and would require an additional key fob. Overall, I still love my Sorento, but it would have been helpful to know about this limitation before purchasing it.

This car is perfect for a dad with a growing family who also needs to assist two sets of elderly parents. I didn't want a minivan, as it seemed too masculine for my taste! 😂 The car has great features for the price, and the computer system is the brains of the vehicle. I read all the manuals, and they all focus on the display screen and its functions. I highly recommend getting the extra warranty for that part, as it is worth the investment. The SUV drives smoothly, and all the safety features really help the driver focus on their job of driving safely. Overall, it's a great SUV for the money.
-
A great vehicle for your family! Reliable transportation, safety is a plus, and there's plenty of room. It's comfortable too. I highly recommend this vehicle as a family vehicle.
-
If you're considering a newer year, I would recommend going for the Turbo, but for the 6 cylinder engine, this SUV is a great choice. I've owned 10 KIA/Hyundai vehicles and I believe you can't get more value for your money. As for the seats, I prefer cloth over leather because leather can be uncomfortable in extreme temperatures. I had six previous cars with leather seats and grew to dislike them. The 6-cylinder engine is reliable and doesn't seem to contaminate the oil. During my last oil change, the service people were surprised to find that the oil was still in good condition after 6,000 miles. I use synthetic oil for added protection.
-
I never thought you would even look at a Kia and I'm so glad you were pleasantly surprised when you test drove one. It's excellent all the way around, from handling to comfort, power when needed, and excellent safety features. I'm so happy to hear that the blind spot sensor is surprisingly helpful. Sounds like you're loving it so far!

The 2019 Kia Sorento, which I purchased in April 2020, has been a complete disappointment. Despite its high rating on US News and World Report and other sites, the engine and transmission have been malfunctioning since I drove it off the lot with less than 50 miles on it. It is shocking that this car is rated #1 given the issues I have experienced and the ongoing class action lawsuit against it. The safety ratings were a key factor in my decision to purchase this car, but there is no safety when a brand new vehicle stalls in the middle of the road. Despite the slow and terrible service, I am hopeful that my warranty will cover the necessary repairs until I can trade it in. I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle.

The car has a lot of great features, such as the ability to fit 7 people comfortably and a useful backup camera with a blind spot alarm. Additionally, the Apple CarPlay is a great feature that adds to the overall experience. However, there are some issues with the transmission or engine misfire that can cause stuttering when driving at 25-30 mph or accelerating. The seats are also uncomfortable for long drives, as the back support is fixed and cannot be adjusted. The passenger seat is manual and cannot be adjusted for height, which can be a problem for some people. The car also has a large blind spot created by the left

I recently purchased a brand new 2019 Sorento, but unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with the heated seats and steering wheel turning on unexpectedly, which can be uncomfortable in hot weather. Despite taking it in for repairs multiple times, the issue persisted and I also noticed warning lights for the forward collision system and auto hold. After further inspection, it was discovered that the heck u system, which controls the brakes and other components, needed to be replaced. Thankfully, this was covered under warranty. Although I'm still disappointed with the issues I've faced, I appreciate the dealership's efforts to resolve the problem.

The 2019 Kia Sorento SX v6 offers great space, options, power, and technology. However, after a year, the engine began to hesitate during acceleration between 40-60 mph. As reviews indicate, this is a known transmission issue that Kia is currently addressing. When I took my car to Kia Archer in Houston, their service team informed me that the car would need to be left for a week for revision. While this was not ideal, I ultimately made the decision to sell the car. It is important to exercise caution when purchasing this car used.

All four doors close with a loud thump that shakes the entire body. The steering is alert at speeds above 55, but I have had to recalibrate it 6 times in 4 months. I have also experienced some parking brake issues, and it once slipped out of parking gear while in my driveway. Additionally, there has been poor shifting between 35 and 45 MPH, and the electronic steering feature shuts off and on. While I have had some issues with the car's electronics and computer since buying it in 11/18, the service department has been helpful, even if they couldn't find any error codes. Overall, I wouldn't buy a Kia again, but I appreciate the assistance I have received from the service department.
