1997 Cadillac Deville problems
The Cadillac DeVille is a model name used by Cadillac over eight generations, originally used to designate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and later to designate a standalone model in the brand range. The last model marketed specifically as a DeVille was the 2005 full-size sedan, at the time, Cadillac's largest model.
For 2006, the Deville nameplate was retired, when the model line was carried forward (with minor revisions) as the Cadillac DTS, using a nomenclature adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS.
Early history
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). An (unshortened) limousine or (in the United States) town car has a division between the passenger and driver compartments and if the driver's seat is outside it may be called a sedanca de ville or town car.
The first Cadillac "Coupe de Ville" was shown during the 1949 Motorama. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner, to match the roof color. It was equipped with a telephone in the glove compartment, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows and highly decorative chrome interior trim. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was used by GM President Charles E. Wilson until 1957 when he presented it to his secretary. At some time during this period it acquired a dark Vicodec roof. The prototype "Coupe de Ville" was found and restored in the 2010s; it was in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada as of 2017.
The Cadillac Series 62 Coupe de Ville was introduced late in the 1949 model year. Along with the Buick Roadmaster Riviera, and the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday, it was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes ever produced. At US$3,496 ($44,768 in 2023 dollars ) it was only a dollar less than the Series 62 convertible, and like the convertible, it came with power windows standard. It was luxuriously trimmed, with leather upholstery and chrome 'bows' in the headliner to simulate the ribs of a convertible top. In its first year the Series 62 Coupe de Ville only sold 2,150 units. But 1950 sales more than doubled to 4507, and in 1951 sales more than doubled again to 10,241 exceeding the sales for the Series 62 Club Coupe that year. Also, in 1951, Coupe de Ville chrome script appeared on the rear roof pillar for the first time, to further distinguish it from the Series 62 Club Coupe.
In 1956 the Series 62 Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillac's first standard production 4-door hardtop. Similarly to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed than the standard 4-door Series 62. With 41,732 sold, it also easily outsold the Series 62 sedan in its very first year. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.

Common 1997 Cadillac Deville problems
The Cadillac DeVille, a classic model beloved around the world, was discontinued after 2005. For those still driving the DeVille, there are several common problems to be aware of, particularly for the 1997 model year.
- Power Window Regulator Failure: This issue affects Devilles dating back to the 1991 model year, including the 1997 model.
- Faulty HVAC Door Actuators: For Deville owners with model years dating back to 1990, including the 1997 model, malfunctioning HVAC door actuators can result in the air conditioning or heater incorrectly delivering air or having it at the wrong temperature. The best way to diagnose this issue is through a general diagnosis, with repair costs varying in price.
- Engine Burns Oil: This is a common problem for the 2001 Cadillac DeVille, but it can also affect the 1997 model. This issue is considered within normal tolerance by Cadillac, but it can lead to further engine problems if not addressed.
- Ignition Coil Failure: This issue can cause a misfire in the engine due to a failed ignition coil. While this problem is more commonly associated with the 2002 Cadillac DeVille, it can also affect the 1997 model.
- Leaking Water Pump: A leaking water pump can cause coolant loss and overheating in the engine. This problem is not specific to the 1997 model, but it is a common issue for the Cadillac DeVille.
- Fuel Injectors Short-Circuiting: The fuel injectors in the 1997 Cadillac DeVille can short-circuit, leading to engine problems and the need for repairs.
These common problems with the 1997 Cadillac DeVille highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspections, particularly for older models. While the DeVille is known for its luxury and classic design, it is not immune to mechanical issues, and being aware of these common problems can help owners address them before they lead to more serious and costly repairs.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I PURCHASED A 97 CADILLAC DEVILLE IN JANUARY 07. FROM THE START IT HAD PROBLEMS. IT WOULDN'T CRANK RIGHT AND HAD VARIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. TRIED MANY DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS BUT NONE WORKED. CAR STILL WOULD NOT CRANK RIGHT. IN 08, I PURCHASED A NEW STARTER AND ALTERNATOR. NOTHING WORKED. AFTER 9 MONTHS, THE ALTERNATOR WENT OUT. HAD TO GET A REPLACEMENT, PLUS PAY AGAIN FOR THE LABOR BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO DID THE FIRST TIME WOULD NOT REPLACE IT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. SO I HAD ANOTHER PLACE PUT ON THE NEW ALTERNATOR. I ALSO HAD THE SAME LOCATION REPLACE MY RADIATOR THAT HAD CRACKED AND HAD BEEN LEAKING RAPIDLY. NOT EVEN TWO MONTHS AFTER GETTING ALL THE NEW PARTS, ON MARCH 19 2009, I HAD BEEN TRYING TO CRANK THE CAR. IT WOULD NOT CRANK. IT SUDDENLY POPPED AND STARTED SMOKING. IT HAD DONE THIS BEFORE AND CRUNK RIGHT UP. SO I GO TO CRANK THE CAR UP AGAIN, ITS STARTED SMOKING EVEN MORE AND AS SOON AS I OPENED THE HOOD, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT SURE BUT MENTIONED IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE BATTERY, THE NEW WORK THAT I HAD GOTTEN DONE OR SOMETHING ELECTRICAL. WHEN ASKED IF IT COULD BE REPAIRED, FIRE CHIEF STATED THAT THEY DID NOT THINK IT WOULD BE WORTH PUTTING ALL THE MONEY INTO AND STATED THAT IT WAS TOTALED. HAD TO WAIT TO GET THE REPORT SO IM UNSURE OF WHAT THEY SAY THE CAUSE WAS. NOW I AM OUT A VEHICLE BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE COLLISION. I PUT ALOT INTO THIS CAR AND THINK THAT ALL INFORMATION SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT TO OLD AND NEW OWNERS TO ALERT THEM OF ANY RECALLS, CHANGES, AND WHAT EVER ELSE. *TR

You had a very good car that you purchased new and recently sold at 80,000 miles. The car had a classy appeal and provided a secure ride. Although you did have to replace the alternator at 70,000 miles, overall it was a great car. On three occasions, after driving in the summer with the A/C on, the car unexpectedly cut off while slowing down. The first occurrence was in 98, and it happened twice this year. Although the service could never duplicate the problem, you still personally liked this car better than the recently purchased 2004 model.

Overall, my Cadillac has been a great car. The only thing I've had to purchase were struts at 120,000 miles. The car is very fast. I've had my Concours up to 138 mph and it was still pulling before I took my foot out of it. The car runs like a scalded dog.

Bought used in 2002, I have not had any major problems as of yet. I had to replace the alternator and have put over 31,000 miles on it in 2 and a half years. I drove to Texas from Ohio twice and once to South Carolina. It's a comfortable and fun car to drive.

At 119,000 miles, the only replacements needed were strut mounts, front rotors, and pads. This car is great! If more people my age drove it (early 30s), they would probably buy it. The Concours is an excellent car with more headroom than an STS, which allows you to get a moonroof (I'm 6'2'').

This classic land yacht has plenty of pep thanks to its 300 hp Northstar engine.

Despite being sold to me as a new car with only 3 miles on the odometer, my DeVille had a number of issues from the very beginning. After driving it for less than 5 minutes, I noticed a vibration in the front end and took it back to the dealer 5 or 6 times. Unfortunately, the dealer refused to provide me with any paperwork documenting the car's repeated visits to the shop. Eventually, with only 900 miles on the car, the front tire rim came flying off and across 3 lanes of traffic. It is clear that the dealer knowingly sold me a lemon, as someone must have been aware of the car's flaws and vibration issues from the very beginning. As a new car, it should have had 5 miles or less on the odometer when titled. I was taken advantage of and this is unacceptable.

I purchased my car in 2000 as pre-owned certified and opted for an extended warranty, which turned out to be a wise decision. Although I have experienced some issues with fuel sensors, electrical problems, steering rack, and trunk leaks, I have been able to handle them with confidence. Despite the unreal oil consumption, I was informed by Cadillac that it was acceptable due to engine design. Unfortunately, right after the warranty expired, I experienced a major oil seal leak. I contacted Cadillac directly, but was informed that there was nothing they could do for me. While my dream car has turned into a bit of a nightmare, I still appreciate the quality of Cadillac. However, I may consider purchasing a Japanese car next time.

I traded in my 2003 Cadillac Eldorado, which was not in great condition, back in 2004. In exchange, I got a 1997 DeVille with only 57,000 miles on it. Since then, I've put on 6,000 miles and I'm happy to say that it's been a great car so far! The best part is that I only paid $5,000 for it, plus my old Eldorado which had a blown head gasket and would have cost $1,900 to repair. Overall, I'm really pleased with my decision to make the switch.

Driving long distances can be a pure joy, especially with the wonderful comfort of the cockpit. However, if a little problem arises, it can be frustrating to deal with the dealership who may seem more interested in making money. While the braking system in conjunction with the traction system could be improved, the acceleration is good. Overall, I would recommend a short term lease for this car, as after 60,000 miles it may become more difficult to maintain.
