2000 Cadillac Catera problems

cadillac logo

The Cadillac Catera is a four-door, five passenger, rear-wheel drive luxury sedan marketed from 1996 until 2001 by Cadillac over a single generation in the United States and Canada. As a rebadged variant of the Opel Omega B, the Catera was manufactured by Opel in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and was underpinned by GM's V-body platform. Approximately 95,000 units were built and sold over five model years.

History

The Catera was previewed at the Detroit Auto Show in 1994 as the Cadillac LSE concept, proposed by Cadillac as an entry-level model that would compete with sedans from Acura, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Jaguar, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz.

In 1996, an early-production model was shown at the Detroit, Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto auto shows. Cadillac began marketing the Catera in the United States in the fall of 1996 as a 1997 model with a base price of $29,995 (equivalent to $58,300 in 2023).

Some of the standard features on the Catera included a cloth interior, front bucket seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, AM/FM stereo radio with cassette player and eight-speaker sound system, airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, keyless entry, security system, alloy wheels, compact spare tire, and full instrumentation. Optional equipment included leather interior, heated seats, cassette player and CD player combination, Bose premium sound system, power sunroof, Homelink, OnStar, and chrome wheels.

A Sport model was offered beginning in 1999 with eight-way power adjustable seats, heated front seats, 17-inch wheels, driver's seat memory, audible theft-deterrent system, three-channel garage door opener, high-intensity discharge headlamps, and a rear spoiler.

The Catera received a facelift in 2000 with revised nose, tail, wheels, interior trim, mirrors, optional HID headlamps, stiffer suspension settings, and side airbags.

The model's engine was a 200 hp (149 kW) L81 54° DOHC V6 manufactured in England at GM's Ellesmere Port facility, using an FR layout. The GM 4L30-E automatic transmission was manufactured at GM's plant in Strasbourg, France.

Falling Flat. Great marketing can boost the appeal of a middling product, but bad marketing can kill a car's appeal. The Cadillac Catera was a perfectly fine car that fell victim to a flat-out bad marketing campaign that failed to communicate the origin and benefits of the car in an appealing way.

  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: CONSTANT PROBLEM SINCE THE PURCHASE OF VEHICLE. SUCH AS STEERING PROBLEMS, QUIVERING ON THE ROAD, BURNING SMELL, ETC. AS OF FEB. 2006, CAR ENGINE SHUT DOWN ON HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING 3 TIMES. AT THE TIME THERE WAS A BURNING SMELL AND THE ENGINE/COOLANT LIGHT HAD COME ON. VEHICLE CONSTANT IN SHOP FOR REPAIR, APPROXIMATELY 3 TIMES A MONTH; CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR ME. ENGINE SENSOR WAS CHANGED IN FEB. 2006; HOWEVER, BURNING SMELL CONTINUED, LEAKS BEGAN TO OCCUR,WATER PUMP NEEDED REPLACEMENT, AND THE COOLANT LIGHT CONTINUED TO BE ACTIVATED. A NUMBER OF LEAKS WERE DISCOVERED, AND THEY WERE REPAIRED; HOWEVER, PROBLEMS CONTINUED TO OCCUR. LIGHT WERE COMING ON AND OFF, "ONSTAR" LIGHT REMAINED ON, AND CD PLAYER/STEREO WOULD STAY ON WITH ENGINE OFF AND NO KEY IN IGNITION WITH DOORS OPEN, AND THE SUNROOF WOULD OPEN WITHOUT TOUCHING THE BUTTON. WHEN TAKEN TO SHOP, RESULT WAS THAT THEY DID NOT FIND ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. AFTER THIS EVENT OCCURRED, CAR CREATED UNUSUAL NOISE WHEN STARTED AND AS ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN. NOW CAR WILL NOT START ON ITS OWN, IT NEEDED A BOOST THREE TIMES WITHIN ONE DAY. WHEN TAKEN TO REPAIR SHOP, MARVIN STARR, REPORTED TO ME TAT CORROSION IS OCCURRING WITH WIRES THAT LEADS TO THE BATTERY. PLASTIC COVERING OF WIRE IS MELTING AND WORN AWAY LEAVING THE BARE WIRE EXPOSED. OVERHEATING IS OCCURRING BUT THE SOURCE IS UNKNOWN. BATTERY, WHICH WAS REPLACED IN 2005, HAS NOW STARTED WEARING AWAY. COMPANY WANTS APPROXIMATELY $1000 IN ORDER FOR WIRES TO BE FIXED; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM IS WHEN THEY REPAIR IT THE MELTING OF THE WIRES WOULD STILL CONTINUE DUE TO THE OVER HEATING. DANGEROUS DRIVING VEHICLE AT MOMENT; HOWEVER, I NEED TO GET AROUND AND DRIVING IS A MAIN PART OF MY EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES. *NM

Negative 2000 Cadillac Catera car reviews

  1. Julian Ritchie 2024-11-14

Great car! I really like the German feel of it. It's so different from American and Japanese cars. I think this is a highly underrated automobile.

  2. Patrick Reichel 2024-10-04

I drove my vehicle for 9.5 months, but unfortunately, it spent most of that time in the repair shop. I had to make 14 visits for 21 discrepancies, and it was out of service for a total of 35 days. I was disappointed that roadside assistance never followed up on any of my calls. Additionally, the Cadillac arbitrator I spoke to seemed to lack knowledge about automobile-related issues. Looking back, I regret my decision.

  3. Graham Orn 2024-09-26

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite its great size and good styling, it has been in the shop more often than not. Every part has been replaced at least once, thankfully covered by the warranty. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a Cadillac again.

  4. Vincenzo White 2024-09-24

What happened to this model? It was in the shop all the time! We had friends with one that was just as bad as ours. The driver had to climb into the passenger seat to exit the car because he couldn't get the driver's door open! Unfortunately, this is the worst car we have ever owned. Although it was a lovely car, the quality was not up to par.

  5. Jermain O'Conner 2024-09-01

Cadillac's recent models have had some issues, including major recalls, broken A/C valves and vacuum connections, loose battery cables, and broken coolant valves. Additionally, some customers have reported issues with the steering wheel, custom cloth top, back seat, window seals, and headlights. These issues are concerning, and it is important for Cadillac to address them promptly and effectively. However, it is worth noting that Cadillac has a long history of producing high-quality vehicles, and I am confident that they will take the necessary steps to ensure customer satisfaction in the future.

Positive 2000 Cadillac Catera car reviews

  1. Ward Wunsch 2024-11-11

Hey there! That's a nice car, but it might not be the best fit for someone who really enjoys a powerful ride.

  2. Leland Pouros 2024-11-01

The Catera provided the image but I've had a few issues with it that have been driving me nuts. For example, the glove compartment pops open if the temperature is below 12 degrees, the auto cup holder sticks, and the ignition key always sticks. I even had a bit of a hollering match with the owners of the dealership over the tire thread damage on the driver's side, but they said it was just normal wear and tear. I had to replace the battery and the steering column leakage caused the car to lock up, leaving me stranded for hours waiting for roadside assistance. The error lights are always on. But, I'm taking things very well and today is my last day with it. I'm looking forward to something less classy and more fun. PT Cruiser, here I come baby!

  3. Randi Rodriguez 2024-10-11

It's great! The car is fast and has a powerful motor, but it has never broken down on me. Plus, it has a sporty look despite being small.

  4. General Cronin 2024-07-27

So far, the Catera has not had one mechanical problem nor warranty repair save the key fob. The seats are comfortable and the controls are all within reach. The car is larger than others I looked at, making it comfortable for four and luggage. Although it doesn't handle razor sharp, it still handles well. However, the Goodyear RSA's are not adequate.
