The first generation of the BMW 1 Series consists of the BMW E81 (3-door hatchback), BMW E82 (coupe), BMW E87 (5-door hatchback) and BMW E88 (convertible) compact cars. The E81/E82/E87/E88 generation was produced from 2004 until 2013 and is sometimes collectively referred to as the E8x. The E8x replaced the 3 Series Compact as the entry level models of the BMW range.

The chassis has an aluminum multi-link suspension, and a rear-wheel drive layout with a longitudinally-mounted engine giving 50:50 weight balance, which was a rare configuration for a hatchback as most cars in this market segment use front-wheel drive. The engines available were four-cylinder turbo-diesel, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol, six-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol and six-cylinder turbocharged petrol (the latter only available on coupe and convertible models).

The highest performance trim is the 1 Series M Coupé which was powered by the BMW N54 turbocharged inline-six engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It was produced in only the coupe body style and is considered the predecessor to the BMW M2.

Following the introduction of the F20/F21 1 Series in 2011, the E81/E87 hatchback models began to be phased out, while the E82/E88 coupes and convertibles remained in production until 2013, when they were replaced by the F22/F23 2 Series models.

Common 2010 Bmw 128i problems

The BMW 128i, manufactured in 2010, is known for its reliable performance, especially when compared to its sibling, the 135i. However, like any vehicle, it is not entirely immune to issues. Here are some of the common problems reported by owners of the BMW 128i 2010 model:

  • Engine Misfires: Engine misfires are a common problem in many cars, and the BMW 128i is no exception. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of these components can help prevent this issue.
  • Clogged EGR Valve: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve can become clogged over time, leading to reduced engine performance and increased emissions. Regular cleaning or replacement of the EGR valve can help maintain optimal engine performance.
  • Faulty Crankshaft Sensor: The crankshaft sensor plays a crucial role in the engine management system. A faulty crankshaft sensor can cause various issues, including engine misfires, stalling, and difficulty starting the vehicle. Replacing the faulty sensor can resolve these issues.
  • Automatic Gearbox Issues: BMW 1-Series cars equipped with an automatic transmission can develop problems that prevent the gear selector from being moved out of the 'P' position. This issue can be caused by faulty wiring or components related to the blower regulator, which may require replacement.
  • Exhaust Flexpipe Failure: Some diesel-engined BMW 1-Series models may generate a droning noise from the front due to a faulty exhaust flexpipe. This issue can be resolved by replacing the faulty part with an improved one.
  • Timing Chain Issues: A grinding noise from the engine can indicate a problem with the timing chain and associated components. This issue can be addressed by replacing the timing chain and related parts.
  • Clutch Seizure: In some cases, the clutch in manual transmission BMW 1-Series cars may seize, preventing the driver from changing gears. This issue can be resolved by replacing the clutch.
  • Squeaky Noises: If your BMW 1-Series emits a squeak from under the hood when you start it or turn the steering wheel, it may indicate a problem with the power steering system or other components. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of worn-out parts can help prevent this issue.

It is important to note that these issues can be addressed by regular maintenance and timely replacement of worn-out or faulty parts. While some of these issues may require professional assistance, others can be resolved by DIY repairs using BMW 1 Series manuals and replacement parts.

In the affected vehicles, the bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit can loosen over time and may possibly break.
  • Consequence: If the bolts loosen or break the engine may have reduced power or stall. An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the four VANOS housing bolts for both VANOS units (intake and exhaust), free of charge. In addition, owners of approximately 170,172 model year 2010-2012 BMW vehicles equipped with inline 6 cylinder engines not covered by this recall, will receive an extended warranty to address this condition. • Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through September 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. • Consequence: If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall began on March 13, 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].
