The Lexus LX (Japanese: レクサス・LX, Hepburn: Rekusasu LX) is a full-size luxury SUV sold by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota since January 1996, having entered manufacturing in November 1995. It is Lexus' largest and most expensive luxury SUV. Four generations have been produced, all based heavily on the long-running Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs. The first-generation LX 450 started production in 1995 as Lexus' first entry into the SUV market. Its successor, the LX 470, premiered in 1998 and was manufactured until 2007. The third-generation LX debuted at the New York International Auto Show in April 2007. The fourth-generation LX debuted in October 2021.
The first-generation LX 450 had a straight-six engine and seats for seven passengers. The second and third-generations had a V8 engine powertrain, a welded steel body-shell combined with full-size steel ladder frame (body-on-frame construction), and seats for eight passengers. The fourth-generation model has a twin-turbocharged V6 engine powertrain and seats for seven passengers as standard and four passengers as an option. The second-generation LX 470 shared exterior styling with the Japanese domestic market Land Cruiser Cygnus.
According to Lexus, the "LX" name stands for "Luxury Crossover". However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, "Luxury Four Wheel Drive".

Common 2001 Lexus Lx470 problems
The Lexus LX470 is a luxury SUV produced by Lexus, Toyota's luxury vehicle division. The 2001 model year is one of the earlier models in the LX470's production run, and as with any vehicle, there are common issues and problem areas that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned problems with the 2001 Lexus LX470:
- Exhaust Manifold Cracks: The 2001 Lexus LX470 is known to have issues with the exhaust manifold cracking, which can lead to a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency. This issue is often caused by the high temperatures and stresses that the exhaust manifold is subjected to during normal operation.
- Steering Column Motor Problems: Some owners have reported problems with the steering column motor, which can cause issues with the adjustable steering column. This can result in the steering column not moving smoothly or not moving at all, which can be a safety concern.
- Hydropneumatic Adjustable Ride Height Issues: The LX470 features a hydropneumatic adjustable ride height system, which can sometimes develop problems. This system uses hydraulic cylinders and air springs to adjust the vehicle's ride height, and if it fails, it can result in a rough ride or difficulty in entering and exiting the vehicle.
- AVS/ABS/VSC/TRAC Issues: The LX470 is equipped with several advanced safety and stability systems, including AVS (Automatic Vehicle Stability), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), and TRAC (Traction Control). Some owners have reported issues with these systems, which can result in reduced stability and control, especially in adverse weather conditions.
- Transmission Problems: While the LX470's transmission is generally reliable, some owners have reported issues with the transmission shifting roughly or not engaging properly. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn clutch plates, or faulty solenoids.
- Shocks and Springs: The LX470's original shocks and springs are known to have a limited lifespan, and some owners have reported that they need to be replaced around the 45,000-mile mark. This can result in a less comfortable ride and reduced handling performance.
- Brake Pad Wear: The LX470's brake pads are known to wear quickly, especially if the vehicle is driven aggressively or frequently used for towing. This can result in increased stopping distances and reduced braking performance.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-01-28
- VIN: JTJHT00W013
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: SO THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING ORIGINALLY AND IT WAS SO LOUD THAT NOT ONLY DID IT EFFECT MY HEARING, BUT IT ALMOST MADE ME RUN OFF THE ROAD. IT THEN PROCEEDED TO GET WORSE JUST WHEN THE KEY WAS IN THE IGNITION AND WASN'T EVEN STARTED. IT IS A LOUD POPPING, CRACKING NOISE COMING FROM THE SPEAKER AREAS, AND FROM WHAT I HAVE NOW DETERMINED IT IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE MARK LEVINSON AMPLIFIER NOT WORKING PROPERLY. IT BASICALLY RENDERS THE VEHICLE USELESS (DUE TO THE SOUND) UNTIL YOU PULL THE AMPLIFIER OUT, PULLING THE STEREO FUSE DIDN'T GET RID OF IT EITHER. THESE AMPS AND THESE STEREOS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED LONG AGO AS THEY ARE TRULY A DANGER TO THE MOTORIST WHO OWNS THEM. THERE IS NO DOCUMENTATION ON HOW TO DISABLE THEM WITHOUT PHYSICALLY REMOVING THEM AND THE SOUND THAT COMES OUT OF THEM WHEN THEY HAVE AN ISSUE IS HORRENDOUS. THIS RECALL NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR SAFETY AND ALSO FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT CONSUMERS ARE GETTING COMPLETELY SCREWED OVER BY THE FACT THAT THESE ARE NOT A LEXUS PART BUT RATHER SOME SORT OF MONOPOLY THAT CAN'T BE CHANGED OUT LIKE MOST CONVENTIONAL AFTER MARKET AMPLIFIERS/ STEREOS. THEY WANT $2200 FOR A NEW ONE OR YOUR ONLY OPTION IS TO DRIVE A VEHICLE WITHOUT A STEREO. PLEASE GET ONLINE AND RESEARCH ALL THE PROBLEMS THESE SYSTEMS HAVE CAUSED OWNERS OVER THE YEARS. THEN PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THERE'S NO DOUBT THAT HAD THE CIRCUMSTANCE HAVE BEEN RIGHT WHEN THAT FIRST GIANT POP WAS HEARD, I COULD HAVE EASILY ENDED UP IN A DITCH OR HEAD ON BECAUSE OF THE SOUND. THE PART NUMBER FOR THE AMPLIFIER IS 86280-0W050 I'M SURE THERE IS OTHER MODELS THAT ARE SIMILAR, BUT AT LEAST LEXUS SHOULD SPEND SOME TIME FIGURING OUT AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO INSTALL AN AFTERMARKET STEREO NOT PRONE TO THIS PROBLEM FOR SAFETY SAKE. ALL OTHER VEHICLES HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE OUT STEREO, AMPS, SPEAKERS WITHOUT TAPPING INTO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-11-15
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: I HAVE A 2001 LEXUS LX 470 ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS THE VSC HAS ACTIVATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND ALMOST AN ACCIDENT. EVERY TIME IT WAS ON DRY ROADS WITH NICE WEATHER. THE VSC LIGHT WOULD COME ON FOR A BRIEF SECOND AND THE VSC OFF LIGHT AND CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LIGHT WOULD STAY ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN REVERSE AND A LOUD POP THEN THE LIGHTS WOULD GO OFF. DURING THIS TIME THE STEERING WOULD BE TIGHT. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-09-01
- VIN: JTJHT00W013
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I HAVE LEXUS LX470 2001 WHICH SUDDENLY STOPPED ACCELERATING AFTER I MADE A STOP AT A CORNER WHICH HAD A STEEP UPHILL TO CLIMB AND IT WOULD NOT GO FORWARD BUT STARTED TO ROLL BACK WHEN I ACCELERATED THE VEHICLE. I HEAR THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE BUT IT WOULD NOT GO FORWARD. I TOOK IT TO LEXUS BUT THEY SAID EVERYTHING IS FINE. IT HAPPENED AGAIN TWO TO THREE TIMES AND FINALLY LEXUS SAID THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE IS MALFUNCTIONING AND CHANGED IT FOR AROUND APPROXIMATELY $2000. SO PLEASE LOOK INTO THE MATTER IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS OF SIMILAR NATURE TO MAKE THESE VEHICLES SAFER TO DRIVE. THANKS. I AM GIVING APPROXIMATE DATES. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-04-01
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
