The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 1985 Toyota Corolla problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1985 Toyota Corolla, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  • Hood Coming Up While Driving: Another common issue with the 1985 Toyota Corolla is the hood coming up unexpectedly while driving. This poses a serious safety hazard as it can obstruct the driver's view and potentially cause accidents. The root cause of this problem may lie in faulty hood latches or hinges, which need to be inspected and repaired to ensure the hood stays securely closed during operation.
  • Fuel Indicator Malfunction: Some owners have experienced issues with the fuel indicator in the 1985 Toyota Corolla. Specifically, the fuel gauge may get stuck at a certain level, such as the quarter tank mark, leading to inaccurate readings of the fuel level. While the low fuel warning light may still function, the inaccurate fuel gauge can cause inconvenience and uncertainty for the driver. This problem may require diagnosing and repairing or replacing the fuel gauge system components to restore accurate fuel level readings.
  • Reliability: Despite these reported issues, many owners have praised the 1985 Toyota Corolla for its overall reliability. The car is known for its durability and longevity, with owners highlighting its ability to withstand the test of time with minimal problems. This reliability factor has been a significant selling point for the 1985 Toyota Corolla, making it a popular choice among drivers seeking a dependable and long-lasting vehicle.

In summary, while the 1985 Toyota Corolla has shown some common problems like oil leaks, hood issues, and fuel indicator malfunctions, its overall reliability and durability have made it a favored choice for many drivers seeking a dependable vehicle from that era.
