The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1974 Ford F250 problems

The 1974 Ford F250, like many vehicles of its era, had a number of common problems that affected its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most significant issues that affected the 1974 Ford F250, based on complaints from owners of this car:

  1. Carburetor and Fuel System Problems: One of the most common issues with the 1974 F250 was problems with the carburetor and fuel system. These problems could lead to poor fuel economy and reduced engine performance. The carburetor was often the source of these issues, as it could become clogged or dirty over time, leading to a range of problems. In some cases, the fuel pump or fuel lines could also be the culprit, leading to fuel starvation or other issues.
  2. Brake System Failure: Another common problem with the 1974 F250 was a tendency for the brake system to fail due to rust and corrosion. This was often caused by exposure to road salt and other environmental factors, which could cause brake lines and other components to deteriorate over time. In some cases, the brake system could fail completely, leading to a serious safety hazard.
  3. Steering System Issues: The 1974 F250 was also prone to issues with the steering system, which could cause the truck to veer to one side or the other when driving at high speeds. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged steering components, such as tie rods or ball joints.
  4. Transmission Problems: The 1974 F250 was also known for having issues with the transmission, which could cause slipping or other shifting problems. In some cases, the transmission could fail altogether, leading to a serious safety hazard.
  5. Power Steering System Failure: The 1975 F250 was prone to issues with the power steering system, which could fail and cause difficulty in turning the wheel. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged power steering components, such as the pump or hoses.
  6. Ignition System Problems: The 1975 F250 was also known for having issues with the ignition system, which could cause the engine to stall or fail to start altogether. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged ignition components, such as the distributor or spark plugs.
  7. Radiator Leaks: The 1977 F250 had a problem with the radiator, which could develop leaks and cause the engine to overheat. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged radiator components, such as the hoses or core.
  8. Exhaust System Problems: The 1977 F250 was also known for having issues with the exhaust system, which could lead to excessive emissions and reduced engine performance. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged exhaust components, such as the muffler or catalytic converter.
  9. Transmission Failure: The 1978 F250 was known for having issues with the transmission, which could fail or experience shifting problems. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged transmission components, such as the gears or clutch.
  10. Fuel System Leaks: The 1978 F250 was also known for having issues with the fuel system, which could cause leaks and lead to decreased fuel efficiency. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged fuel system components, such as the fuel tank or lines.
  11. Steering System Issues: The 1979 F250 had similar issues with the steering system as the 1978 model, as well as problems with the brakes, which could fail or become less responsive over time. This was often caused by worn-out or damaged brake components, such as the pads or rotors.

In general, the 1974 Ford F250 was a reliable and capable vehicle, but like any vehicle of its era, it was prone to certain common problems that affected its performance and reliability. By understanding these issues and taking steps to address them, owners of the 1974 F250 could help ensure that their vehicle remained safe and reliable for years to come.
