Volkswagen Routan problems

The Volkswagen Routan is a seven-seat minivan and rebadged variant of the Chrysler RT platform, with revised styling, content features, and suspension tuning from the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
Manufactured alongside the Chrysler and Dodge minivans at Windsor Assembly and marketed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Routan debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in the United States in September of the same year as a 2009 model. The Routan's minivan variants include the Dodge Caravan, Ram C/V, Chrysler Town & Country, and Lancia Voyager (export)—that by 2009 have ranked as the 13th best-selling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.
Production of the Routan was halted in 2012 due to high inventory levels, and Volkswagen announced the 2013 model year would be primarily reserved for rental car companies and other fleets, with limited availability to the public at dealer showrooms. This also held for the 2014 model year Routan.

Common Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan, produced from 2009 to 2014, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another common problem with the 2009 Routan is a coolant leak at the Y-diverter valve. The plastic Y is prone to cracking every 40k or 50k miles, which can lead to more severe engine problems if not addressed promptly.
The 2011 Routan also has its share of problems, with electrical issues being the most reported. There are 55 electrical complaints, with the most common being the car shutting off while driving, steering locks, and the car seizing. This issue has been reported 9 times, with an average cost to fix of $1,300, an average mileage of 79,000 miles, and an average age of 7.5 years.
Premature wear on brake pads and rotors is another common issue with the 2011 Routan, with 9 complaints. This problem can lead to more frequent and expensive brake repairs, which can be a significant concern for owners.
The 2011 Routan also has difficulty starting, with 8 complaints. This issue can be frustrating for owners, especially if it occurs frequently or during inclement weather. Additionally, there are 7 complaints of the vehicle not starting, which can be a significant safety concern if it happens while driving.
The Volkswagen Routan has an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 8th out of 8 for minivans. The average annual repair cost is $745, which means it has average ownership costs. While repairs are more frequent than average for the Routan, these issues are often minor, so you can expect to make slightly more trips to the shop than normal.
In summary, the Volkswagen Routan has several common problems, with electrical issues being the most significant concern. The 2009 model year has the most reported problems, with the car shutting off while driving, steering locks, and the car seizing being the most common issue. We used to have a 07 Odyssey, but we were blown away by how much we like the 09 Routan over the Honda. It's far quieter when driving down the road and the suspension is awesome. The buttons for everything are in the right places, making them easy to find and use. We've owned a Voyager, Montana, Uplander, Odyssey, and now the Routan, and we can confidently say that it's our favorite. Some reviews mention that it's a partnership with Chrysler and not pure VW, but we think that's a small detail. Overall, the Routan is an awesome minivan!

Vehicle year: 2009
We bought our Routan in June 2009 and have put 33,000 miles on it without any major malfunctions. It has been an excellent transportation appliance for our family. If people respect the Routan minivan for what it is, and for what it is not, they'll be satisfied too. Although we have had to do frequent brake jobs, wheel bearings, and alignments, we still plan to own the Routan until it can no longer run. nnUpdate: 04/2016 - Our family still owns the Routan, which now has 77,000 miles. We recently had to replace the transmission solenoid for $800.00 because it would not shift higher than 2nd gear. While it has become an exasperating vehicle to own, we don't expect the Routan to last longer than 100k miles. nnUpdate: 03/28/19 - We traded the Routan with approximately 100k miles for a used 2016 Toyota Sienna in 2018. The 4.0L engine in the Routan was about to die, so we had to make a change. Although the interior accommodations in the Routan were great, we are happy with our new Sienna. I wish someone still manufactured a larger

I should have stuck to the Honda Odyssey. My 2010 VW Routon has several issues with the nose. Every time I step on the gas, it starts to squeal, but as soon as I take my foot off the pedal, it stops. The right sliding door sticks and sounds like it will fall off, and there is a knocking noise in the right passenger door. The engine sometimes does not shift smoothly. I am confident that these problems can be fixed by a competent mechanic.

This van is perfect for families! It has plenty of room and is wonderful for kids. My children absolutely love it and always comment on how comfortable it is. I use it to transport them and all their sports equipment, and it easily fits everything we need, including chairs. Any large family would appreciate this car. The pricing is also very fair, which is great for a woman with seven kids like me :)

We usually change cars every few years as leases expire, etc. However, this time it has been a tremendously fun surprise. We have driven the Odyssey and the Sienna (we owned a 2006), and we did not think there was any comparison. The VW is far superior. This car is easy to drive and actually fun. The kids love the room and the dynamic seating arrangements. There is a crazy amount of storage, and the included entertainment package is better than expected. If you are considering this vehicle, do yourself a favor and give it a look. You will love it!

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. It has proven to be unsafe and unreliable, posing a potential hazard to you and your family. Unfortunately, we have experienced numerous issues with the sliding doors, which have even caused harm to one of our children. Despite multiple attempts to have the car serviced, the problems persist. At this time, the car is currently undergoing repairs, and I am hesitant to bring it home. As someone who previously owned a Honda Pilot, I can confidently say that this car has been a disappointing and frustrating experience.

Although our VIN is not listed in the recall, we are experiencing all of the same symptoms. We have taken our vehicle to the dealership, but unfortunately, they were unable to provide us with a solution. I am confident that we will be able to find a resolution to this issue soon.

This car has had some issues since I purchased it, but I have been able to address them effectively. While it is true that parts can only be purchased from the dealer, I have found reliable mechanics who are able to work on this car. Although I have had to take the car in for mechanical reasons three times, each issue has been resolved and the car has been working well for several months at a time. While the dealer charges for the time the car is waiting for repair, I have found the cost to be reasonable given the quality of service provided.

This car is mostly made by Chrysler. If you are looking for a VW, this might not be the best option for you. Although the suspension is VW, the rest of the car is Chrysler. It is important to note that VW sells four different vans in Germany. Unfortunately, this car has lost 30% of its value in less than a year. If I had known this beforehand, I would have leased it. If you are interested in a Routan, you could consider buying a Town and Country and adding VW logos. They are essentially the same car!

If you are considering purchasing this van, we recommend investing in an extended warranty. While it is a big and heavy vehicle, it may not be as durable as previous generations of Grand Caravans. The brakes are undersized and tend to wear out quickly, requiring replacement every 25k miles or so. Additionally, there have been some reported issues with the driver's side seat heater, flex plate in the transmission, and torque converter solenoid. The interior quality is not the best, and there have been some issues with rattling and the Bluetooth connection. However, we understand that every vehicle has its quirks and issues, and we encourage you to do your own research and make an informed decision. Thank you for considering this van!
