Volkswagen Routan problems

The Volkswagen Routan is a seven-seat minivan and rebadged variant of the Chrysler RT platform, with revised styling, content features, and suspension tuning from the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.

Manufactured alongside the Chrysler and Dodge minivans at Windsor Assembly and marketed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Routan debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in the United States in September of the same year as a 2009 model. The Routan's minivan variants include the Dodge Caravan, Ram C/V, Chrysler Town & Country, and Lancia Voyager (export)—that by 2009 have ranked as the 13th best-selling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.

Production of the Routan was halted in 2012 due to high inventory levels, and Volkswagen announced the 2013 model year would be primarily reserved for rental car companies and other fleets, with limited availability to the public at dealer showrooms. This also held for the 2014 model year Routan.

Common Volkswagen Routan problems

The Volkswagen Routan, produced from 2009 to 2014, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

Another common problem with the 2009 Routan is a coolant leak at the Y-diverter valve. The plastic Y is prone to cracking every 40k or 50k miles, which can lead to more severe engine problems if not addressed promptly.

The 2011 Routan also has its share of problems, with electrical issues being the most reported. There are 55 electrical complaints, with the most common being the car shutting off while driving, steering locks, and the car seizing. This issue has been reported 9 times, with an average cost to fix of $1,300, an average mileage of 79,000 miles, and an average age of 7.5 years.

Premature wear on brake pads and rotors is another common issue with the 2011 Routan, with 9 complaints. This problem can lead to more frequent and expensive brake repairs, which can be a significant concern for owners.

The 2011 Routan also has difficulty starting, with 8 complaints. This issue can be frustrating for owners, especially if it occurs frequently or during inclement weather. Additionally, there are 7 complaints of the vehicle not starting, which can be a significant safety concern if it happens while driving.

The Volkswagen Routan has an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 8th out of 8 for minivans. The average annual repair cost is $745, which means it has average ownership costs. While repairs are more frequent than average for the Routan, these issues are often minor, so you can expect to make slightly more trips to the shop than normal.

In summary, the Volkswagen Routan has several common problems, with electrical issues being the most significant concern. The 2009 model year has the most reported problems, with the car shutting off while driving, steering locks, and the car seizing being the most common issue. The 2011 Routan also has its share of problems, with electrical issues being the most reported. While the Routan has an average reliability rating, repairs can be more frequent than average, so it's essential to stay on top of maintenance and address any issues promptly.

Latest negative Volkswagen Routan car reviews

  1. Domenic Sawayn 2024-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2009

This van has experienced several issues, including rotor/brake problems (requiring replacement 4 times on the front and 2 times on the rear), check engine light/thermostat issues 4 times, driver's side window problems, and remote start problems. Although it may appear attractive on the inside and outside, it is important to note that once the warranty expires, the cost of maintaining this vehicle on the road will be significant. While it may not be the best example of German engineering, it is important to note that every vehicle has its own set of issues. I have found that my previous Nissan Quest was more reliable than this van. I am currently exploring my options under the Lemon Law.

    Vehicle year: 2012

I recently traded in my 2010 VW Routan SEL for a Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with my VW after only 30,000 miles. I have decided to stay away from Volkswagen in the future and no longer trust them. Thank you for listening to my experience.

  3. Gianni Streich 2024-11-17

The Routon's unique appearance caught our attention, and as a young couple, we were pleased to drive it without feeling embarrassed. It provided a comfortable ride, especially for our young children who enjoyed the DVD system and Xbox inputs. However, we were disappointed when the van began to shake while braking, and upon inspection, the front rotors were found to be faulty at only 20k miles. Although the dealer fixed the issue, the shaking returned 7k miles later, this time with the back rotors. Due to concerns about future breakdowns, we decided to trade in the van.

  4. Justyn Yost 2024-11-04

Here's what happened: We switched from an SUV to a minivan because we were promised better gas mileage (17/25). Unfortunately, we're only getting similar mileage to our old SUV (13/19). My wife loved her SUV, and I convinced her that the minivan would save us money on gas. We feel deceived and disappointed. It's important for companies to stand behind their promises and deliver on them, no matter who they are.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I think this van is absolutely fantastic. It's definitely the most stylish and comfortable one I've come across in my search. This is actually my first time owning a VW, but I can already tell that it won't be my last!

  2. Casper Douglas 2024-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2009

We are thrilled with our new Routan! When it comes to shopping for a minivan in this market, there really is no other choice in my opinion. The alternatives are outdated, unexciting, and unremarkable. If you're looking for something unique, the Routan is the way to go. It's stunning, handles superbly for a minivan, comes loaded with all the features you need, and has plenty of cool tech gadgets. Plus, it's reasonably priced and offers 0% financing. For us, the decision was easy - the only tough part was choosing a color!

  3. Isai Jerde 2024-11-21

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I think this van is absolutely fantastic. It's definitely the most stylish and comfortable one I've come across in my search. Even though this is my first time owning a VW, I can already tell that it won't be my last. Thanks for your time!

  4. Cody Breitenberg 2024-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2009

I initially resisted the idea of getting a mini-van, but with three young kids, it became a necessity. I was a bit hesitant to choose the Routan due to its 're-badged' Chrysler persona and being a first model year. However, I have been pleasantly surprised with my experience so far. My wife and I have owned six VW's, and we can confidently say that it has that classic VW feel and drive. Compared to our Honda Pilot, it is an absolute dream to drive. We also considered the Odyssey, but it just didn't have the same driving feel and suffered from the usual interior rattling that we've experienced with all of our Hondas. Overall, we are thrilled with our decision to go with the Routan. It definitely has more VW to it than we expected.

  5. Fred Bergstrom 2024-11-09

    Vehicle year: 2013

I am following up on my earlier post regarding my car. Despite a few issues I have encountered, I have been able to resolve them with the help of the dealership. The brakes had to be replaced at 10k miles due to vibration in the steering, but the dealership promptly replaced them under warranty. Additionally, I had trouble with the 2nd row seat, which was stuck and could not be removed or put back. However, the dealership replaced the seat frame free of charge. Lastly, there was a creaking noise coming from the driver's door while driving on certain bumps, which was very irritating. After taking it to 2 different dealerships, the second dealership lubricated the driver side door hinges and that took care of the issue. Overall, I am confident in the dealership's ability to address any issues that may arise with my car.
