Volkswagen New beetle problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. It was revised in 2005 and was in production until 2011, almost fourteen years since introduction.

In 2011 for the 2012 model year, a new Beetle model, the Beetle (A5), replaced the New Beetle. It is often referred to as the New Beetle as well. Various versions of this model continued to be made in Puebla, Mexico, until the final car left the assembly line on 10 July 2019.

History

At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994.

Production design approval was reached in mid-1995, with a design freeze resulting in 22 months of development time for production. In October 1995, the Volkswagen Concept Two was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, essentially an early preview of the production model due in early 1998.

Strong public reaction to the Concept One convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997 for the 1998 model-year, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle. Volkswagen created a web site dedicated specifically to the 1.8T. A convertible was added for the 2003 model-year to replace the Volkswagen Cabrio. However, the New Beetle Convertible was never offered with a compression-ignition engine in North America. The third-generation Beetle Convertible, the successor to the New Beetle Convertible, was offered with the TDI compression-ignition engine in the USA but not in Canada, though, making it possibly the only diesel convertible car offered in North America.

The New Beetle carries many design similarities with the original VW Beetle: separate fenders, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, and large round taillights, as well as a high rounded roofline. It was assembled in VW's Puebla factory in Mexico.

In June 2005, Volkswagen announced a facelift of the New Beetle featuring revised bumpers, wheels, lamps, VW emblems, sharper lines and a different interior. In the USA it went on sale for the 2006 model year.

  • Summary: DRIVING MY 2004 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE IS DANGEROUS. THE TIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION IN THE 2004 VW BEETLE IS KNOWN BY VOLKSWAGEN TO BE DEFECTIVE. AT ANY POINT THE VALVE BODY CAN FAIL, WHICH CAUSES DELAYED SHIFTING, AND HARD JERKING BETWEEN GEARS. MY 2004 BEETLE FAILS TO SHIFT WHEN ACCELERATING BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR. THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO COAST FOR SEVERAL SECONDS, SOMETIMES REQUIRING PULLING OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC. WHEN DOWNSHIFTING IT JERKS EXTREMELY HARD. YOU GET IN, START THE ENGINE, AND RECEIVE NO WARNINGS THAT ANYTHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. NO CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT PROVIDES ANY INDICATION THAT THE VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS. YOU DRIVE DOWN SOME CITY STREETS AND HOP ONTO THE FREEWAY TO GO TO YOUR FAVORITE GROCERY STORE. AFTER GETTING OFF THE FREEWAY THE CAR IS FULLY WARMED UP, AND AS IT DOWNSHIFTS FROM 4TH TO 3RD GEAR IT LURCHES. IT FEELS LIKE THE ENGINE IS TRYING TO JUMP OUT OF THE CAR! NO ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. THEN YOU STOP AT THE END OF THE OFF-RAMP, AND WAIT FOR A TRAFFIC LIGHT TO TURN. AFTER TURNING THE CAR SHIFTS FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR. THEN IT FAILS TO SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. THE GEAR DOESN'T ENGAGE, AND THE CAR COASTS DOWN THE ROAD WITHOUT ANY POWER. DRIVERS PASSING BY ARE STARING. THE SUV BEHIND YOU IS RIGHT ON YOUR BUTT; THEY BEGIN HONKING. THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO. FINALLY, AFTER 20 SECONDS OF COASTING THE CAR ENTERS 3RD GEAR WITH A GIANT LURCH. IT FEELS LIKE IT'S GOING TO EXPLODE! YOU PULL INTO THE GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT, HEART RACING, KNOWING THAT THE CAR YOU'RE DRIVING ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT THAT COULD KILL A HALF A DOZEN PEOPLE. AND YOU KNOW TO GET HOME IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS PROBLEM IS REPORTED BY HUNDREDS OF OWNERS. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD. VOLKSWAGEN NEEDS TO RECALL THE AFFECTED VEHICLES AND PAY DAMAGES FOR THOSE WHOSE TRANSMISSIONS WERE DESTROYED BY THIS DEFECTIVE VALVE BODY AND TRANSMISSION.

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXAMINED BY QUALIFIED TECHNICIANS AND CERTAIN CONTROL PARTS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO DISPLAY THIS DEFECTIVE BEHAVIOR SEEMINGLY AT RANDOM. Latest negative Volkswagen New beetle car reviews

  1. Kole Wiegand 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2004

This car has been a disappointment. In just three months, I have experienced more issues than with any other car I have owned. The electrical problems and interior issues are significant. I would not recommend this car to anyone.

  2. Fidel O'Kon 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 2004

I'm currently in the service department for the 10th time in 2 years for another repair that isn't related to regular maintenance. I bought this car to avoid these types of situations, but unfortunately, it has been a disappointment in terms of quality, especially with its electrical components. After today, I'm trading it in for a more reliable Japanese model, which may not be as cute but will definitely be more dependable. If you have a lot of time to spend in service department waiting rooms, then this car might be for you! Just a friendly warning.

  3. Richie Nienow 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2003

I bought this 2003 Beetle with only 39k miles on 12-31-08 for my daughter. Unfortunately, I've had to replace three coil packs, and the fourth one had already been replaced before we bought the car. Although VW had a problem with this issue, they informed me that this car was not covered under the recall back in 2003. However, they did suggest that I could take the car to the dealer and pay $100.00 to get the codes read. If I kept the receipts and if they ever do recall this issue, then I could send in for a refund. Instead, I decided to use the $100.00 code fee to purchase new coil packs. I also bought a code scanner off of eBay for less than $30.00, which reads and clears the Check Engine Light after you make the repair. This car has the 1.8T engine.

  4. Cameron Brakus 2025-04-15

    Vehicle year: 2006

This car is definitely cute and fun to drive, but it can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to maintenance. If you're considering taking it to a mechanic outside of the dealership to save some money, it's important to keep in mind that some mechanics may not have experience working with Beetles, which can be quite complex. Additionally, it's important to address any issues with the car as soon as possible to prevent further damage. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with my own Beetle and am currently waiting for it to be repaired. Despite these challenges, I still enjoy driving it and appreciate its unique style.

  5. Cyrus Turcotte 2025-04-13

    Vehicle year: 2004

I have always wanted one of these cars and finally bought one a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, it has cost me more in maintenance and repairs than any other car I have owned. Recently, I had to pay $850 for a repair after going over a bump and now there is an issue with the window sensor. Despite the reputation for German engineering, my experience has been disappointing. I have decided to sell my car, but I have learned a valuable lesson.

  1. Kraig Jacobson 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2004

The VW Beetle TDI diesel is a fantastic car to drive, and it's easy to maintain. It's also much less stressful at the pump than a comparable gas burner, which is great news for your wallet. The TDI's high torque (and low rpm's) make it quiet and powerful on the highway, while also demonstrating the hill climbing strengths of a goat. By burning high cetane, low sulfur fuel or better yet a 20% blend of biodiesel, you can keep the emissions low. In the 18 months and 34K miles that I've owned my TDI Beetle, it has performed flawlessly and has been a joy to drive. I even had a fun experience driving past a bus load of school kids and instigating a punch buggy frenzy!

  2. Furman Gusikowski 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2000

Congratulations on your first new car! It's great to hear that you had no problems for the first 5 years and only minor ones after that. Even though it drove rough towards the end, it sounds like it was a reliable car. It's unfortunate that it was involved in an accident, but it's impressive that it held up so well and kept you safe. It's clear that this car was built to last and handle tough conditions, which is especially important in Minnesota. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Regan Wolff 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 2000

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my trusty yellow bug. I purchased it used with 100K km and it has been a reliable commuter car for me ever since. I've put 380K km on it and it's still going strong! I did have to replace the clutch about 40K km ago, but I upgraded to a racing clutch without the double throw and it's been great. The brakes have been replaced at the normal interval and I had to have the AC repaired last year after 12 years of service, but everything else works perfectly. I'm hoping to get 500K km out of it, but the only issue I've had is that the running boards are prone to rotting out. Luckily, it's a cheap fix. By the way, I drive it like I stole it and average 53-56 MPG. Oh, and for some reason, women seem to love the yellow color! Take care!

  4. Jarred Gutkowski 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2000

Your beetle sounds amazing! You bought it in 2008 with 104K miles on it, and it has been a road warrior! It has been up to 178K miles and still no problems! You replaced the water pump and belts at 120K and just regular oil changes. It is an awesome, reliable car. The only problem you have is that the front grille keeps coming off because you keep scraping it on the ground (admittedly you have very poor parking skills) due to its low clearance, but that is also what makes it so zippy! If someone is looking for reliable transportation, this is the car for them!

  5. Emerson Davis 2025-03-15

    Vehicle year: 1999

I purchased this car back in 2006 with 82,000 miles on it. At that time, I had the timing belt and water pump replaced since it's an interference engine. The transmission was replaced at 136,000 miles. In another 15,000 miles, it will require another timing belt/pump replacement. The silver color is still intact, but the clear coat has seen better days. Unfortunately, the interior has been damaged by my beloved chihuahua who loves to ride on the dash. Despite the challenges I've faced, this car has been the best. I did have an issue with the check engine light indicating 'secondary air flow incorrect'. Typically, this is caused by cracked plastic piping from the air pump, but in my case, the manifold was clogged with carbon. Once cleaned, the secondary airflow was back to normal. As of now, the car has 360,844 miles and still runs like a dream! Although I had to sell it due to moving away, I have many fond memories with this car.
