The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. It was revised in 2005 and was in production until 2011, almost fourteen years since introduction.
In 2011 for the 2012 model year, a new Beetle model, the Beetle (A5), replaced the New Beetle. It is often referred to as the New Beetle as well. Various versions of this model continued to be made in Puebla, Mexico, until the final car left the assembly line on 10 July 2019.
History
At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994.
Production design approval was reached in mid-1995, with a design freeze resulting in 22 months of development time for production. In October 1995, the Volkswagen Concept Two was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, essentially an early preview of the production model due in early 1998.
Strong public reaction to the Concept One convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997 for the 1998 model-year, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle. Volkswagen created a web site dedicated specifically to the 1.8T. A convertible was added for the 2003 model-year to replace the Volkswagen Cabrio. However, the New Beetle Convertible was never offered with a compression-ignition engine in North America. The third-generation Beetle Convertible, the successor to the New Beetle Convertible, was offered with the TDI compression-ignition engine in the USA but not in Canada, though, making it possibly the only diesel convertible car offered in North America.
The New Beetle carries many design similarities with the original VW Beetle: separate fenders, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, and large round taillights, as well as a high rounded roofline. It was assembled in VW's Puebla factory in Mexico.
In June 2005, Volkswagen announced a facelift of the New Beetle featuring revised bumpers, wheels, lamps, VW emblems, sharper lines and a different interior. In the USA it went on sale for the 2006 model year.

- Summary: This car was extremely modified by a company caledl Hestermann Motorwwerks. The specific problem is the installation of LED Tail/Brake lights. The lights are not compatable with the cars electrical system and as a result they have a problem that is called Hyper Flashing. That means the turn signal, when engaged, flashes erratically and wehn the brake pedal is applied the light flalso ashes erratically causing the following vehicle to be confused and resulting in an unsafe condition. This is my second New Beetle and I absolutely love it! I bought my first one back in '98 when they first came out and I've never looked back. I've taken it on some amazing road trips, from Washington to Los Angeles, from Florida to Nova Scotia, and even 92,000 miles beyond! The New Beetle is hands down one of the most comfortable small cars for both around-town and cross-country driving. You won't experience any of the usual aches and pains that come with long drives. Plus, the well-placed controls, full-size spare, and Monsoon sound system make for an all-around great driving experience.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the New Beetle. I've actually owned two - a 1998 and my current one, a 2002. I must say, after four years and a hundred thousand miles, the difference is noticeable. I've always loved the unique shape of the car, but driving it is truly a great experience. While it may not be the most powerful car out there, it more than makes up for it with its exceptional handling. The car feels sturdy and there are minimal vibrations, making for a smooth ride over most terrains. Additionally, it has great traction in all weather types (although I did recently put new tires on it). While the engine noise is audible, it's not too bothersome - especially at higher speeds, where the car really shines. Going 70 mph and over is a breeze in this car. The front seats are extremely comfortable, although the same cannot be said for the backseats - especially if you're over 5'9. However, the rear seats do fold down to create a large amount of cargo space, which is a nice feature. I've read some reviews about reliability issues with this car and similar years, but I have yet to experience any major problems *knocks on wood.* I've kept up with regular maintenance, including oil changes, and have found the engine to be very reliable. Over the span of about 2 years and 20,000 miles, I've paid for a new headlight bulb, new tires, a transmission fluid change, brake pads and rotors all around, and to have my heater core replaced. Despite all of this, I've never had a problem with my car and I plan to continue driving it - it's eye-catching and gets great gas mileage. UPDATE 6/17 - I've now had the car for 3 years and 40,000+ miles. Recently, some things started to break, so I had to adjust my reliability score. But overall, I still love my New Beetle!New throttle body, 4 different mass air flow sensors, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, control arms, ball joints, struts, shocks, alternator, all 3 engine mounts, serpentine belt and tensioner, catalytic converter and full cat-back exhaust system...and I'm sure I'm missing a few. It sounds like you've been through a lot with all these repairs. Have you considered looking into newer options? It might be worth exploring to save yourself some stress in the long run.

I purchased this TDI Beetle from a customer who had it since new and it's still in great overall condition. The car has an original clutch, is rust-free, and still manages to get an amazing 49.5 mpg on the highway at 78mph during the summer. I've had the car for a little over 4 months now and have already put on 15,000 miles. I love driving this car and I'm not afraid to take it on long trips. In fact, I'm planning a trip to Florida in the spring for some baseball action. The cupholders may not be the best, but that's a minor issue. I bought my dream car, a Beetle, back in May with 162k miles on it. So far, I absolutely love it! Although I did have to replace the clutch, it wasn't too bad. I've also managed to fix most of the cosmetic issues. With 46 miles per gallon combined, it's perfect for me since I drive a lot. However, I did end up trading it for an Altima due to some issues that started to arise. Nonetheless, I will always cherish the memories I had with my beloved Beetle!

During the first week of owning my brand new Beetle, unfortunately, the alternator went out. Since then, I have had to bring it in for several other issues, such as window motors breaking, flooding during rain, stalling, and a faulty CD changer. It's been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. I do believe that the car has potential, but it's important to be aware of the issues that may arise. I have heard of similar experiences from others, but I'm still optimistic about the future. Thank you for your understanding.

The car's engineering and quality have been poor, resulting in several issues such as transmission and catalytic converter replacements, as well as other minor problems. Unfortunately, the convertible top has also been problematic and my daughter has had to stop using it due to frequent malfunctions. I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite investing $3500 to have the transmission rebuilt, the brakes failed and the car caught fire, resulting in a total loss. Although the salvage yard was able to salvage the engine, the car was not worth the investment. It is clear that this car is not reliable and poses a safety risk.

My parents gave me this car when it had 120k miles on it, and I've driven it up to 250k miles, and it's still going strong. Of course, I've had some issues, but that's to be expected with any car. The heating/cooling fan went out, the clutch had to be replaced once, and the windshield wiper fluid stopped spraying. The interior is a bit cheap, but overall it's been a reliable car. However, it's time for me to start looking for a new car, and I'm considering VWs. While repairs can be expensive, VWs are known for their longevity. If you need repairs, don't pay $60 for a headlight. I bought the bulb for $12 and had a small mechanic do the labor for $8. You can save a lot of money by finding someone else to do your repairs, just make sure they know what they're doing.
