The Volkswagen New Beetle is a compact car, introduced by Volkswagen in 1997, drawing heavy inspiration from the exterior design of the original Beetle. Unlike the original Beetle, the New Beetle has its engine in the front, driving the front wheels, with luggage storage in the rear. It was revised in 2005 and was in production until 2011, almost fourteen years since introduction.
In 2011 for the 2012 model year, a new Beetle model, the Beetle (A5), replaced the New Beetle. It is often referred to as the New Beetle as well. Various versions of this model continued to be made in Puebla, Mexico, until the final car left the assembly line on 10 July 2019.
History
At the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Concept One, a "retro"-themed concept car with a resemblance to the original Volkswagen Beetle. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio, the concept car was based on the platform of the Volkswagen Polo. A red cabriolet concept was featured at the Geneva Motor Show, also in 1994.
Production design approval was reached in mid-1995, with a design freeze resulting in 22 months of development time for production. In October 1995, the Volkswagen Concept Two was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show, essentially an early preview of the production model due in early 1998.
Strong public reaction to the Concept One convinced the company that it should develop a production version which was launched as the New Beetle in 1997 for the 1998 model-year, based on the Golf IV's larger PQ34 platform. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo). For the 1998 model year, only the TDI compression-ignition engine was turbocharged; the spark-ignition engines were only naturally aspirated. In June 1999, Volkswagen introduced the 1.8T, which was the first turbocharged spark-ignition engine offered for the New Beetle. Volkswagen created a web site dedicated specifically to the 1.8T. A convertible was added for the 2003 model-year to replace the Volkswagen Cabrio. However, the New Beetle Convertible was never offered with a compression-ignition engine in North America. The third-generation Beetle Convertible, the successor to the New Beetle Convertible, was offered with the TDI compression-ignition engine in the USA but not in Canada, though, making it possibly the only diesel convertible car offered in North America.
The New Beetle carries many design similarities with the original VW Beetle: separate fenders, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, and large round taillights, as well as a high rounded roofline. It was assembled in VW's Puebla factory in Mexico.
In June 2005, Volkswagen announced a facelift of the New Beetle featuring revised bumpers, wheels, lamps, VW emblems, sharper lines and a different interior. In the USA it went on sale for the 2006 model year.

- Summary: This car was extremely modified by a company caledl Hestermann Motorwwerks. The specific problem is the installation of LED Tail/Brake lights. The lights are not compatable with the cars electrical system and as a result they have a problem that is called Hyper Flashing. That means the turn signal, when engaged, flashes erratically and wehn the brake pedal is applied the light flalso ashes erratically causing the following vehicle to be confused and resulting in an unsafe condition. Vehicle year: 2002
I noticed that some people were having issues and I wanted to share my experience. I have had a fantastic experience with this car, with only a few minor problems that did not require the car to be out of service for more than a day or require a tow. The car is enjoyable to drive, has more leg and head room than any other car in its class, and is cost-effective. It's worth noting that the standard 4-year, 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is included, which the people who have had issues failed to mention. The car is well-designed, and the company stands behind its product. I'm not sure what else you could ask for.

Love my bug! My husband purchased this used vehicle for my college graduation eight years ago and we have put very little money into her. She runs great and has okay gas mileage, considering it's Turbo not diesel. As she's starting to age, she's not as quiet as a new ride, but I don't plan on replacing her. In fact, I'm looking to change her paint job from red to hot pink!

What an awesome little bug! It's amazing how much it can carry, even three dogs! The spoiler is a nice touch, and it's no surprise that it comes out at 90mph. I've gotten great mileage on the highway, up to 40 miles per gallon. Despite being small and compact, there's still plenty of headroom. Plus, the panels are incredibly strong - I once ran into a van and the van got a dent, but there wasn't a scratch on the beetle!

This car is used for work purposes and is covered in advertising. Although I was initially hesitant to purchase it based on reviews, it has turned out to be a decent car. I have experienced some issues with the airbag and check engine lights, but fortunately, there is a wealth of information available online to help with those problems. The car is both fast and fun to drive, and it boasts a lot of great features for its cost. So far, my issues have been minor, and I am hoping for a few more years of reliable use.

This is our 2nd VW New Beetle TDI, both 2003's. I have been very happy with both cars overall. Although, the maintenance expenses are higher compared to Toyota's. I have never had any unscheduled maintenance expenses with any Toyota I've owned. However, both Bugs are fun to drive and more comfortable, especially for me as I'm 6'3

I purchased this car from a family member who had only driven it for 16K miles and kept it in a garage. It's a 2.0 convertible with an automatic transmission. While I have had some challenges with this car, I have been able to address them with some DIY repairs and the help of a friend. Although the car has some flaws, such as creaking and moaning over smooth roads, it has good brakes and gets 30MPG on the highway. The paint is in good condition and the engine and transmission are still working well. While the car may not be perfect, it has served me well and I am grateful for the opportunity to own it. So nothing here to see-keep looking.

These cars can be quite frustrating. At 140k miles, I've had to replace/repair several components that seem unnecessary. For example, the rear 3rd brake light seal tends to leak, which allows water into the trunk lock and sets off the alarm every time it rains. This can be quite inconvenient and requires replacing the trunk latch. Additionally, the water pump and mini fold are made of glass reinforced plastic that doesn't stand up to prolonged high temperatures, causing both to crack and need replacement at different times. It's important to keep in mind that this car may not be the most reliable option if you plan on keeping it for more than 3 years.

My bug had to go due to a leak in the roof of the car. Apparently, the drains in the roof clog easily and with nowhere to go, the water leaks into the car. The dealer and the regional manager confirmed that cleaning the drains is common knowledge. Despite the numerous problems from the beginning and careless service, I made the decision to let go of my bug.

I have experienced several issues with this vehicle in the short time that I have owned it. Specifically, I have had to replace the driver's side headlight twice and the exterior mirror has cracked down the middle without any apparent cause. Additionally, I have encountered problems with the power windows, which seems to be a common issue among other owners. Based on my experiences, I do not find this vehicle to be reliable and I am considering trading it in for a more dependable option.
