Volkswagen Eos 2010 problems
The Volkswagen Eos is a compact two-door, four passenger convertible manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen from 2006-2016 — noted for its five-section hardtop retractable roof which itself featured an independently operable glass sunroof. VW marketed the body configuration as a CSC (coupe-sunroof-convertible).
Assembled at AutoEuropa in Portugal, the Eos succeeded the Golf Cabriolet. Eos production ended in May 2015, with a limited number of base trim models marketed as 2016 models in the United States.
The model name derived from Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn.

Common Volkswagen Eos 2010 problems
The Volkswagen Eos 2010 is known for several common problems, including clock spring failure, excessive oil consumption, defective timing chain, and issues with recalled Takata airbags.
- Clock Spring Failure: The clock spring is a critical component in the steering column that connects the driver's airbag, horn, and electrical control systems. In the Volkswagen Eos 2010, the clock spring has been known to fail, leading to the loss of airbag functionality and other electrical issues. This problem can occur due to wear and tear, and it is essential to replace the clock spring when it fails to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: The Volkswagen Eos 2010 has been reported to consume more oil than expected, which can lead to engine damage and costly repairs. This problem is often caused by worn piston rings, cylinder walls, or valve guides, which can allow oil to leak into the combustion chamber and burn off during engine operation. If not addressed promptly, excessive oil consumption can lead to engine failure, which is a significant safety concern.
- Defective Timing Chain: The timing chain is a critical component in the engine that synchronizes the movement of the pistons and valves. In the Volkswagen Eos 2010, the timing chain has been known to fail, leading to engine damage and costly repairs. This problem is often caused by wear and tear or manufacturing defects, and it is essential to replace the timing chain when it fails to ensure the proper operation of the engine.
- Recalled Takata Airbags: The Volkswagen Eos 2010 is among the vehicles affected by the massive recall of Takata airbags, which can explode with too much force and send metal shards flying. This problem has been linked to several deaths and injuries, and it is essential to replace the recalled airbags as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers.
In addition to these common problems, the Volkswagen Eos 2010 has been reported to have issues with the folding roof mechanism, which can jam or fail, leading to water leaks and other problems. The car's electrics can also fail, causing the front windows, air-con, and other systems to stop working. Dashboard warning lights can also appear and disappear at will, which can be a sign of more serious issues.
Overall, the Volkswagen Eos 2010 has several common problems that can lead to costly repairs and safety concerns. It is essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the proper operation and safety of the vehicle.

- Summary: VEHICLE STALLS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TAKE OFF VEHICLE NEARLY DIES WHEN COMING TO A STOP. WAS TOLD BY DEALER THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS REPLACED. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THE EARLY VERSION OF THIS TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN HIGHLY PROBLEMATIC. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN AMERICA AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NO KIND OF RECALL FOR THIS CAR RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HOWEVER READ OF MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ VOLKSWAGEN HAS GIVEN A GOODWILL EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THESE TRANSMISSIONS, HOWEVER THEY SAY OURS IS NOT PART OF THIS EVEN THOUGH OUR CAR WAS BUILT IN EARLY NOVEMBER 2009. OUR CAR IS A 2010 AND HAS MOST ALL THE SYMPTOMS THE 2008 AND 2009 HAVE/HAD THAT I HAVE READ ABOUT. IN MY PERSONAL OPINION AND BEING A MECHANIC WORKING FOR A NATIONALLY KNOWN TRACTOR DEALER MYSELF I FEEL MORE SHOULD BE DONE BY VOLKSWAGEN, EVEN IF THEY ARE PRESSURED TO DO SO. I FEEL OUR CAR SPECIFICALLY IS A BIT DANGEROUS AND I FEAR IT WILL ONLY BECOME WORSE WITH TIME.

I HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PUSH THE CAR OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. THIS WAY VERY HUMITATING. AFTER SPEAKING TO A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP, THEY ADVISED ME THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR SOMETIME. WELL I'M SORRY VOLKSWAGEN I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO WASTE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY KNOW THAT THIS HAS BEEN A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I HAVE CHILDREN THAT I HAVE TO TRANSPORT BACK AND FORTH AND AT THIS POINT I DONT FEEL THAT MY VOLKSWAGEN IS A RELIABLE CAR. PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS A RECALL IN PLACE FOR THIS PROBLEM.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-08
- VIN: WVWBA7AH4AV
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: IN 2015, THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE CLOCK SPRING. A REPAIR WAS MADE, NOT A REPLACEMENT WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON IT. IN SEPT. 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 56,000 MILES, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND ALL STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS WERE LOST INCLUDING THE HORN. VW IS REFUSING TO COVER THE REPAIR UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE OF THE COVER THAT WAS INITIALLY INSTALLED IN 2015. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE COVER DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE AND THE CLOCK SPRINGS ARE FAULTY AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS THEY AIRBAG AND HORN DO NOT WORK WHEN THEY FAIL. IF THEY HAD REPLACED THE CLOCK SPRING IN 2015, I WOULD UNDERSTAND A SECOND ONE NOT BEING COVERED. HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT REPLACE IT, THEY PLACED A COVER OVER IT. THEIR REFUSAL TO ADDRESS THE RECALL PROPERLY AND REPLACE THE PART IS UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE THE CLOCK SPRING, I DEMANDED IT WHEN I WAS FORCED TO PAY FOR A REPLACEMENT THAT COST OVER $700.00.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-09-27
- VIN: WVWBA7AH4AV
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: LAST WEEK, WHILE TURNING INTO OUR DRIVEWAY, THE STEERING WHEEL MADE A SOUND LIKE RUBBER GRINDING. IMMEDIATELY, AN ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED INDICATING AN AIRBAG FAILURE. THE FOLLOWING DAY, WHILE DRIVING ON A 4-LANE HIGHWAY, ANOTHER VEHICLE BEGAN A LANE CHANGE WHILE I WAS IN ITS BLIND SPOT. I APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND ATTEMPTED TO SOUND THE HORN TO ALERT THE OTHER MOTORIST TO AVOID COLLISION, HOWEVER THE CAR'S HORN FAILED. THE ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED, BUT THE EXPERIENCE WAS UNNERVING. MY WIFE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL VW SERVICE CENTER ON 10/5/18, AND WAS TOLD THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO AN ISSUE WITH THE CLOCK SPRING, A REPAIR WHICH SHE WAS TOLD WAS UNCOVERED BY RECALL. WE WERE A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS, BECAUSE THE DEALER HAD JUST PERFORMED A TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL SERVICE IN FEBRUARY, THEN TODAY WE RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE AIRBAG BUT NOT THIS RELATED ISSUE. SOME INVESTIGATION IN ONLINE PUBLICATIONS LIKE FORBES, INDICATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE CLOCK SPRING IN 2015, WITH THIS VEHICLE LISTED IN THE MODEL LIST AND PRODUCTION DATES. HOWEVER, VW DOES NOT LIST THIS RECALL UNDER OUR VIN NUMBER. AGAIN WE ARE SUSPICIOUS. IT IS OUR FEELING THAT THE FAILURE OF THE CLOCK SPRING, AFFECTING THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG AND THE CAR HORN (THE HORN IS NOT BROKEN, THE CLOCK SPRING IS), POSES A MOTORIST SAFETY RISK TO THIS AND OTHER VEHICLES IN TRAFFIC.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-08-13

Volkswagen Eos 2010 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the Volkswagen Eos 2010.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Volkswagen CC, 2010-2014 Golf, 2010-2014 Eos, 2007-2010 Passat Sedan and Wagon, and 2012-2014 Passat vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 16, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69Q9. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
- Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my low mileage EOS. It's been over 3 years and 65,000 miles and I'm happy to say that it's still going strong! :)
-
After almost 3 months of owning a new EOS, I am still impressed with the functionality of the sunroof and the torque throughout the RPM range, which is comparable to other turbo engines. The speakers are of very good quality, although the sound unit (premium) could be improved. While the car's handling can be a bit challenging, especially when starting, I have found that being delicate with the controls can help avoid any issues. Overall, the engine and DSG gearbox are impressive, but there is room for improvement in terms of the car's handling and stability on the road.
-
I've always wanted a hard-top convertible ever since I saw one two months ago. When I found out that Volkswagen made a hard-top convertible, I was thrilled! It turned out to be very reasonably priced and drives and handles really well. People will also be surprised by the roominess of the rear seats. The back is definitely big enough to hold two average sized dwarfs or a couple of medium sized farm animals. The automatic transmission shifts very smoothly and the engine definitely holds its own on the highway. Overall, this car is a pleasure to drive.
-
This is my first convertible, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it performs. Although there is some wind noise and it's not as solid as a sedan, I would definitely purchase this car again. It's so much fun to drive and gets great gas mileage.
-
Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you found the perfect vehicle for your needs. Although there was a minor issue with the top leaking during a car wash, it's great that VW was happy to take care of it. The top going down smoothly and the turbo providing a lot of power for a four-cylinder engine are both impressive features. It's also great to hear that your car performs well at high altitudes. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice with your car!

As others have mentioned, the timing chain can stretch and cause significant damage to the engine, ultimately requiring replacement. Unfortunately, this happened to our beloved 2009 car after just over a year of ownership and right over 100,000 miles. The cost of replacing the engine is a hefty $6,000 US, and we still owe $4,000 to the bank. While we adore this fun, little car, we cannot justify the expense. Therefore, we would advise against purchasing this model.
Pierce Monahan 2024-01-16
After experiencing numerous issues with the electrical system, sensors, gas cap, ABS, braking, fuel pump, airbag, and other components, I decided to trade in my car for a different brand. Despite conducting extensive research prior to purchasing, the 2009 model proved to be a disappointment. As a long-time VW driver, it is regrettable that this will be my last. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 EOS. It's been a great car for me, with less than 80K miles and driven gently. I feel safe and comfortable inside this solid little car, and I absolutely love the hard-top convertible. However, I do have some concerns about potential future costs. Occasionally, a piece of the convertible retraction mechanism doesn't work properly, but I've found that a little nudge can fix it. I worry that someday it might fail completely, and I'll have to pay a fortune to replace what is essentially just a wire. Additionally, there have been some strange electronic issues, such as the CD player not working and the windows raising and lowering themselves when the A/C is on. It's quite distracting and not great for the car, as the windows might be in the closed position but the glass will be on the outside, making it more likely for the glass to break if the door is slammed and for water to leak in through the gap. Lastly, there is a known issue with the timing chain or timing chain tensioner, and there is a class action suit that will likely be settled soon. However, I'm worried that my car might fail outside of the window of opportunity to benefit from the suit. Even if I participate and get reimbursement from the suit, I'm concerned that I'll still have a large out-of-pocket expense. Thanks for listening!
