The Toyota Supra (Japanese: トヨタ・スープラ, Hepburn: Toyota Sūpura) is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is derived from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond".

The initial four generations of the Supra were produced from 1978 to 2002. The fifth generation has been produced since March 2019 and went on sale in May 2019. The styling of the original Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was longer. Starting in mid-1986, the A70 Supra became a separate model from the Celica. In turn, Toyota also stopped using the prefix Celica and named the car Supra. Owing to the similarity and past of the Celica's name, it is frequently mistaken for the Supra, and vice versa. The first, second and third generations of the Supra were assembled at the Tahara plant in Tahara, Aichi, while the fourth generation was assembled at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.

The Supra traces much of its roots back to the 2000GT owing to an inline-6 layout. The first three generations were offered with a direct descendant to the Crown's and 2000GT's M engine. Interior aspects were also similar, as was the chassis code "A". Along with this name, Toyota also included its own logo for the Supra. It was derived from the original Celica logo, being blue instead of orange. This logo was used until January 1986, when the A70 Supra was introduced. The new logo was similar in size, with orange writing on a red background, but without the dragon design. That logo, in turn, was on Supras until 1991 when Toyota switched to its current oval company logo. The dragon logo was a Celica logo regardless of what colour it was. It appeared on the first two generations of the Supra because they were officially Toyota Celicas. The dragon logo was used for the Celica line until it was also discontinued.

In 1998, Toyota ceased sales of the fourth-generation Supra in the United States. Production of the fourth-generation Supra for worldwide markets ended in 2002. In January 2019, the fifth-generation Supra, which was co-developed with the G29 BMW Z4, was introduced.

Common Toyota Supra problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota Supra, several common problems have been identified:

  • Oil Consumption Issues: Some owners have experienced excessive oil consumption in their Toyota Supra. This problem has been linked to piston rings, causing the car to go into "limp mode" while driving. In some cases, Toyota has replaced engines or bought back cars to address this issue.
  • Paint Quality: Complaints have surfaced regarding the paint quality of the Toyota Supra, with reports of white bubbles or spots on the clear coat. Owners have tried various remedies, including using heat on the affected areas, but in some cases, Toyota has replaced the cars.
  • Wind Buffeting Noise: Another common problem is the wind buffeting noise that occurs when the windows are rolled down at any speed. This noise is caused by the turbulence created by the window shape, leading to an annoying helicopter-like noise in the cabin. Solutions like anti-buffeting kits are available online to mitigate this issue.

These issues highlight some of the common complaints from Toyota Supra owners, ranging from mechanical concerns like steering wheel shuddering and oil consumption to aesthetic problems like paint quality and noise disturbances in the cabin. Owners should be aware of these issues when considering purchasing a Toyota Supra and may need to take preventive measures or seek assistance from Toyota for resolution.

Can a Supra be an everyday car?

The level of dynamism offered by the Supra is impressive around this kind of surrounding, but I'm glad there wasn't much of a trade-off for the drive home either. It's easy to get comfortable whether on the freeway or traversing city streets.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-29
  • VIN: WZ1DB0G06PW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Parking brake is releasing on its own. I would press the clutch in when starting the car and as soon as i release or press down again it will release. Car is also in neutral when I am doing this so it has nothing to with it being in gear and releasing. The parking brake should on release when I pull the button or if i am in gear and want to pull off.

  • Summary: When I start the car and put the transmission in neutral, the parking brake releases on its own. Depending where I am parked, the car will slowly roll. I usually just re engage the parking brake especially if i don't plan to drive at that very moment. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Parking brake How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle can roll back or forward and can put others at risk. • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
  • Date Complaint: 2023-11-08
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C04MW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am extremely concerned this vehicle consumed .9 Quarts of oil which barely reached 1k miles from the oil consumption test performed by Toyota TECH TIP T-TT-0642-21 (Loyalty Toyota). If the vehicle had consumed the full one 1QT the engine could be deemed a replacement. By researching the internet, other 2021 Toyota 3.0 owners are having similar conditions at different intervals. According to the suggested maintenance interval by Toyota "Toyota recommends changing the oil every 12 months or 10,000 miles, or whenever the maintenance reminder light comes on, whichever comes first. So based on the Toyota I will incur 6.9 quarts for an oil change and 9 more quarts in between oil changes based on 10k miles intervals. It is feasible that to consume one quart every 3k, but one quart every 1k miles is extreme and the condition excessive and could worsen with vehicle mileage. I would like to get a resolution to this matter promptly.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • Date Complaint: 2023-06-05
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C00MW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am not sure what components or systems failed or malfunctioned. I just know that randomly when I am at a complete stop and proceed to try to go onto oncoming traffic, the vehicle hesitates as if it is about to die out and then moves at a crawl for roughly 3-4 seconds and then kicks in and accelerates back to normal. I have taken the vehicle to be serviced 4 times but nothing has being resolved. Service department at the dealer says they can't find anything wrong. The last time I took it to the dealer they kept the vehicle for about 5 days to hook it up to the computer to see if it recorded anything that would help them resolve it but nothing was recorded. There are no warning lamps or messages appearing any of the multiple times this has happened. It is a safety hazard because several times I have been stuck in the middle of an interstate or street with oncoming traffic with the potential of injury or death if hit by another car vehicle.
Toyota Supra 2023
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-13
  • Date Complaint: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: WZ1DB0G01PW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: This vehicle (in particular the new manual transmission equipped one) has a system which automatically disengages the electronic parking brake when you try to drive away with it applied, and that system does not have enough interlocks or "rules" that govern when it activates. In certain circumstances, the car will automatically disengage the parking brake with as little user input as simply letting the clutch pedal out - even if you've just come to a stop and applied the parking brake immediately before letting the clutch pedal out. Given that the only safe way to exit the vehicle with the engine running is with the parking brake applied and the car in neutral, this over-active system easily results in a rollaway vehicle hazard. This happened to me twice and I didn't understand at the time what was going on, but I have mostly isolated the conditions under which it has happened. The system seems to be looking for recent brake and throttle inputs, and if those inputs have been triggered recently then letting the clutch pedal out will automatically disengage the parking brake. However, "recently" seems to be very liberal, as you can touch the brake and throttle and then wait at least ten seconds (and potentially longer) then let out on the clutch, and the system will automatically disengage the parking brake. Additionally, the system does not seem to care if the car is in neutral or in gear. The car is aware of what gear it's in at all times, as this information is displayed in the instrument cluster with R, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 indicating which gear you've selected, or N for neutral. Obviously if you're in neutral, you're not attempting to drive away, so the system should never activate when the car is in neutral. I have additionally documented this issue in a video here: https://youtu.be/GXAR1Q-ApUQ

  • Summary: Rear hatch will not open electrically and/or from the interior manual release handle. If someone gets stuck in the trunk or a pet, won't be able to come out. I had items I bought and if they included battery or dangerous item, my safety would be at risk. There is no rear realse hatch button from the outside the car. NO other problems or accidents. Is there any additional weight mounted on the rear hatch (e.g. a spoiler)? No Does the latch release electrically? No 4. When attempting to release electrically, does the latch make a noise? No, but you can hear a light click in the wiring when you press the trunk electronic button 5. Does the latch release from the interior manual release? (NOTICE: Only attempt to release using light force. If excessive force is applied, additional damage may occur.) No 6. Does the interior manual release cable feel stiff when pulled gently, or does it extend and rebound freely? Manual release cable feels stiff when pulled genlty

  • Date Complaint: 2023-01-01
  • VIN: WZ1DB0G02PW
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Going west bound on I30 in Arkansas traveling with the flow of traffic. There was a transition part of the highway where it went from some asphalt repair to concrete roadway and when my car hit this the wheel seperated in a 360 degree pattern and the only thing holding the wheel together was the tire. I believe the 19" wheel that Toyota used on this 2023 Supra has a factory defect and is very dangerous and needs to be looked into ASAP. There was no damage to the car at all.

  • Date Complaint: 2022-10-20
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C00MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a new 2021 Toyota Supra and along with other owners of this new model, there is a safety issue that has been identified. There is a repeating issue with unresponsive/unpredictable throttle behavior for me and other Toyota Supra owners. It only happens on a cold start, when going in reverse on a slope (exiting the garage) and when traction control gets engaged (the wheel gets in the air for a second due to the curb/slope). After this maneuver either the engine gets stalled or the throttle starts to behave unpredictably. Specifically about the latter — pressing on the pedal does nothing for 2-3 seconds but then suddenly the engine revs go high and the car jumps ahead, even if the pedal is not pressed anymore. As if it's a 2-3 seconds lag between the pedal press and the wheel spin. This happened to me at least 20 times during the time of ownership (6 months). My trip to the dealership didn't help as I could not replicate the issue (only happens on cold start). I've contacted the manufacturer (Toyota USA) but they were unable to help and only documented the case. I have tens if not hundreds of Supra owners in an online community reporting the same issue. We are also aware that this issue is affecting owners globally, but Toyota has not yet made any statements about it. This issue is a safety concern and I almost got into an accident because of it. It requires attention before anyone gets hurt. Will be happy to assist and provide reports from other owners in the US. I've also attached the error codes that appeared at the time of the last accident and an invoice from the dealership. Thank you.

  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. This car is really small, but it's still great!

Congratulations on your 3rd car! As someone who has owned all Acuras, it's great to hear that you are now a proud Toyota (and eventually Lexus hybrid) owner for life! This car is truly impressive, with the ability to turn heads everywhere you go. It's amazing that everything in this car can be upgraded, making the sky the limit when it comes to engine tuning. The car was built ahead of its time, and it's hard to believe that it's a 97 and not an 07. It's perfect for circuit or drag racing, or even just as a collector's item to watch go up in value. It's great to know that there's a large Supra enthusiast community, similar to the Mustang or Camaro. And it's even better to hear that this car has been extremely reliable for you, even after adding HP!

Fun to drive! This is a good car to soup up. It's fast and has plenty of power. The seats are also nice.

This sports car is amazing! With just a few bolt-on mods, it really takes off. The body styling is flawless and it excels in every category. It's definitely one of the best cars out there!

I currently own a 1991 Toyota Supra with a turbo and automatic transmission, including temperature control, electronic throttle control, and overdrive. The car runs great and is fast. I enjoy street racing and have had success with this car. If you're looking for an economic or racing car, this is a great option.
