The Toyota Supra (Japanese: トヨタ・スープラ, Hepburn: Toyota Sūpura) is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is derived from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond".

The initial four generations of the Supra were produced from 1978 to 2002. The fifth generation has been produced since March 2019 and went on sale in May 2019. The styling of the original Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was longer. Starting in mid-1986, the A70 Supra became a separate model from the Celica. In turn, Toyota also stopped using the prefix Celica and named the car Supra. Owing to the similarity and past of the Celica's name, it is frequently mistaken for the Supra, and vice versa. The first, second and third generations of the Supra were assembled at the Tahara plant in Tahara, Aichi, while the fourth generation was assembled at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.

The Supra traces much of its roots back to the 2000GT owing to an inline-6 layout. The first three generations were offered with a direct descendant to the Crown's and 2000GT's M engine. Interior aspects were also similar, as was the chassis code "A". Along with this name, Toyota also included its own logo for the Supra. It was derived from the original Celica logo, being blue instead of orange. This logo was used until January 1986, when the A70 Supra was introduced. The new logo was similar in size, with orange writing on a red background, but without the dragon design. That logo, in turn, was on Supras until 1991 when Toyota switched to its current oval company logo. The dragon logo was a Celica logo regardless of what colour it was. It appeared on the first two generations of the Supra because they were officially Toyota Celicas. The dragon logo was used for the Celica line until it was also discontinued.

In 1998, Toyota ceased sales of the fourth-generation Supra in the United States. Production of the fourth-generation Supra for worldwide markets ended in 2002. In January 2019, the fifth-generation Supra, which was co-developed with the G29 BMW Z4, was introduced.

  1. Head Gasket Issues

One of the most common problems reported by 1990 Toyota Supra owners is head gasket failure. This issue typically arises after the car has been driven for a considerable number of miles, and it can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly. The head gasket is responsible for sealing the engine's cylinders, preventing coolant and oil from mixing. When the head gasket fails, coolant and oil can mix, leading to overheating and engine damage. If you're considering purchasing a 1990 Toyota Supra, it's essential to check the head gasket's condition before making the purchase or soon after.

  1. Cooling System Problems

Another common issue reported by 1990 Toyota Supra owners is related to the cooling system. Specifically, the water pump bearing can wear out, leading to coolant leaks and overheating issues. This problem can be particularly challenging to diagnose, as the symptoms can be similar to those of a head gasket failure. If you notice coolant leaks or overheating issues in your 1990 Toyota Supra, it's essential to have the cooling system inspected by a qualified mechanic to determine the root cause of the problem.

  1. Engine Problems

These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out clutch components, faulty sensors, or issues with the transmission. 1. Interior and Exterior Issues

Some 1990 Toyota Supra owners have reported issues with the car's interior and exterior components, such as faulty interior lights, leaking rocker covers, and handling problems. These issues can be caused by various factors, including wear and tear, manufacturing defects, or improper maintenance. If you're experiencing any of these issues in your 1990 Toyota Supra, it's essential to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and address the issue.

  1. Transmission Problems

Some 1990 Toyota Supra owners have reported transmission problems, such as difficulty shifting or transmission slipping. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn-out clutch components, faulty sensors, or issues with the transmission itself. If you're experiencing transmission problems in your 1990 Toyota Supra, it's essential to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and address the issue.

In conclusion, the 1990 Toyota Supra is a high-performance sports car that has been praised for its performance and reliability. However, like any other vehicle, the 1990 Toyota Supra has its share of problems, particularly related to the engine, cooling system, and transmission. If you're considering purchasing a 1990 Toyota Supra, it's essential to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic to ensure that it's in good condition and to address any potential issues before they become major problems.

Its powerful, a blast to drive, good on gas, and really good looking if kept in good shape. Literally the only complaint I have with the car is that its a little hard to fit in the back but that's probably the product of the fact that I'm 6' 6" and its a coupe.

Positive 1990 Toyota Supra car reviews

  1. Narciso Jenkins 2025-02-16

I can tell you that I just bought this Supra and I've been wanting one for a long time. It's everything I expected it to be. The car is quite heavy, but it has a smooth ride and all the power you need is there when you need it. Overall, I'm very pleased and happy with my purchase.

  2. Damian Cummings 2025-02-06

What a fantastic coupe! It's plenty fast with natural aspiration and a blast to drive, yet still comfy for a long road trip. And you can bet it's reliable too. The 26 mpg on the highway is more than okay for the power provided. The only thing to note is that the 5-speed manual revs a bit high on long freeway drives, with well over 3500 rpm at 80 mph.

  3. Gay Beatty 2025-01-26

There is so much to love about this car! The speed, dry-road handling, braking, and style are all amazing. Plus, it's super easy to upgrade for even better performance. I just wanted to clarify something for those who have mentioned a bad head gasket - with a simple retorque of the headbolts, it can actually survive up to ~350HP, as long as it hasn't been abused.

If you're considering a MKIII Supra, it's important to test drive the car. If you hear gurgling sounds coming from the coolant overflow tank after stopping, it could be a sign of a leaking head gasket. Check under the oil cap for grey sludge, which could indicate worn rings or coolant getting into the oil. Also, look in the overflow tank for any signs of oil. It's best to have some mechanical knowledge as maintenance can be costly. However, once the mechanical issues are sorted, it's a great car to drive. The Supra offers a lot of premium features, especially the Turbo model with the full sport package. You can even put your arm upright on the window sill without feeling cramped, unlike in newer FR-S or even a MKIV 93-98 Supra. I've been driving the same Supra for 27 years and I can't find a car I like better. Although it's a bit heavy (3,600 lbs) for the horsepower (200 to 230) and uses gas (premium for a turbo) 16 - 23 MPG, it's still a comfortable sport touring car. It's more of a track car unless you make costly modifications to get 360HP or more. Some of the lines of the car remind me of a Porsche 928 or a 1980s Laser / Daytona. Parts can be hard to find, but Toyota has come up with a program and a website for people with vintage Supras (MK3 & MK4) to apply for parts to be reissued, depending on demand. Overall, the Supra is a great car to own and drive, but it's important to be aware of the potential maintenance costs.I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share some updates on my car. With the help of the first government stimulus check, I was able to purchase a new set of tires and rims, which have been working great so far. I also found a product called EZR hairline crack sealer that has been really helpful in fixing some leaks in the targa top and trunk hatch. Recently, I repainted the rear bumper, both door mirrors, and the hood with Nason 3H1 red pearl metallic base coat and clear coat, and it's looking fantastic! I've been using McGuire's products to keep the rest of the paint looking good. I've also been keeping up with maintenance, including changing the radiator fluid and replacing the valve cover gaskets. In the spring of 2023, I replaced the driver side inner tie rod on the steering rack and painted the rear wing and bumper with Nason 3H1 red pearl metallic base coat and clear coat. I also replaced and adjusted the throttle position sensor, which has resulted in increased fuel mileage. In the fall of 2023, I replaced the turbo pressure sensor with a new old stock one I found on eBay for $100. I have a list of things to do this winter, like replacing the low-pressure power steering hoses and repairing a rip in the driver seat. Overall, the car is running well and I haven't had any major issues.

  5. Presley Roob 2024-09-18

I just got this car a couple of weeks ago. I've driven Supras before and have nothing but good words for them. The interior features are great, I love the targa top, and it's just an overall fun ride. Unfortunately, the head gasket on mine just blew, and when I went to fix it, we found a cracked cylinder head. I hope the repair costs won't be too high because I really like my car, and I wouldn't want to be turned off by the expenses.
