The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

THE RECALL NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED TO ALL 2006 MODELS. DRIVER DOOR LOCKS- WHEN THE DOOR IS LOCKED, IT WILL NOT UNLOCK WITHOUT A LOT OF PLAYING WITH THE FOB OR USING KEY AND 'GETTING LUCKY' TO GRAB THE HANDLE AT THE CORRECT TIME WHILE DOING SO, OTHERWISE IT LOCKS BACK IMMEDIATELY UPON PULLING THE HANDLE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE ON 2 LEVELS. 1-IF FOR WHATEVER REASON YOUR TRAVELS TAKE YOU THROUGH ROUGH NEIGHBORHOODS, THE ABILITY TO LOCK THE DOORS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE IF YOU COME ACROSS THE WRONG PEOPLE. HOWEVER, YOU CAN NOT LOCK THEM BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND THE CAR CATCHES ON FIRE OR YOU NEED TO ESCAPE THE VEHICLE QUICKLY, THE DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK SO YOU CAN OPEN IT LEAVING YOU TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE. AFTER PERFORMING A SEARCH ON GOOGLE, THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO BE WITH THE LOCK ACTUATOR AND IS EFFECTING OPTIMA'S DATING BACK TO THE 2002-2003 MODELS. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES SERIOUSLY NEED TO BE DEALT WITH BY KIA. EITHER ISSUE IS SETTING UP A SCENARIO THAT WILL RESULT IN THE DEATH OF THE DRIVER, IF A SEVERE ACCIDENT OCCURS. *TR

- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 KIA OPTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM HAD FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,000.

IF THE CLOCK SPRING CONTACT ASSEMBLY BECOMES DAMAGED, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT WILL EXPERIENCE A HIGH RESISTANCE CONDITION POTENTIALLY CAUSING THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG TO NOT DEPLOY.

THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SHIFT CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING TENSION IN THE CABLE. IF PRESENT, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY'S DOWEL PIN PREVENTING THE TRANSMISSION FROM BEING SHIFTED. I never thought I would like a Kia, but this car was too good to pass up. After owning a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer, I needed something dependable and good on gas. I've had two Nissan cars that were excellent and considered going in that direction, but two friends who own a Kia (one car and one SUV) swear by them, not at them. It's been three months and I really like my Optima. It has a smooth ride, handles well on any road surface and around corners, and provides a very stable drive. The 2.4L 4cyl engine delivers a lot more power than I expected. The cabin is pretty quiet and I haven't heard any rattles or noises in the car so far. I'm extremely satisfied!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 Optima LX that I purchased brand new from a local dealership here in Colorado Springs on 16 Jun 2006. The dealership was kind enough to offer me a $3K rebate since I was so upside down on the vehicle I traded in. In my opinion, this 2006 Optima LX is built better than the Spectra. Although I only had this vehicle for less than a week, I can say that it drives and handles well and has 2.4 liters vs the 1.8 liters the 03 Spectra has, making it a much faster vehicle with more power. I went with price and options over quality, but I'm pleased with my decision so far. I understand that some people have negative things to say about Kia's, but I wanted to share my positive experience. Thank you for reading!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. Personally, I bought it as a commuter car and it has been perfect for that purpose. It's not fancy, but it's reliable and has all the basic features you need. The acceleration is good enough and it handles well at speeds of 75-80 mph. I've put 100 miles on it every day and it's been great. I test drove some Chevy's, but I actually liked the Kia better. Overall, if you're looking for something cheap and reliable, this car is definitely worth considering!

Repairs began at 36,000 miles and were not covered by the warranty, as confirmed by the mechanic. While it was determined that the issue was not a manufacturing defect, $4000.00 has been spent on repairs thus far, yet the vehicle remains undrivable with the check engine light still illuminated. The vehicle has received a new flywheel, clutch, timing belt, and sensors, including the crank and EGR valve sensor. However, a new issue has arisen and further repairs are needed. Despite the financial and emotional strain, I remain confident in finding a solution to this problem.

I purchased the 2006.5 Optima two years ago based on the positive reviews I read on this and other sites. However, my experience with the car has been disappointing. I have been struggling with the MPG, which is puzzling. The car looks nice with the accessory wheels, but it seems to lack substance. The dealer has not been able to explain the phenomena. Kia has a great ad campaign, but it seems to be all image and no substance. If you drive like a grandma or the snowbirds we entertain in Az, then the Kia might be a good fit for you. However, if you're any other kind of driver, I would recommend pushing it far down your list. I'm wondering if there are any drivers out there who have had a better experience with this car.

I've been driving the car for 4 months and it's been really reliable and comfortable. It's not the easiest car to drive around town due to low torque, so I wouldn't recommend it for new drivers. My wife also finds it a bit challenging to drive.
