The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.

The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.

Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2011 Toyota Corolla problems

The 2011 Toyota Corolla has faced several issues, primarily related to recalls and faulty electrical components. The most serious problem is the Takata rupturing airbag recall, which affected over 50 million vehicles worldwide and resulted in several fatalities. This recall affected five of the nine recalls on the 2011 Corolla, making it a significant concern for owners.

Another issue with the 2011 Corolla is unintended acceleration, which has been reported by drivers but not yet addressed by the NHTSA.

The 2011 Corolla has also faced electrical issues, including faulty seat wiring and power window switches. Toyota issued a recall for several models, including the 2011 Corollas, due to the power window switch's electrical equipment potentially short-circuiting, increasing the likelihood of a fire.

The power window switch isn't the only electrical issue that the 2011 Corolla faces. Recalls have also been issued for the seat heater wiring, which can potentially catch fire with or without a passenger present.

Despite these issues, the 2011 Toyota Corolla is still considered a reliable vehicle, with many owners rating it well at 4.3 out of five stars. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and ensure that all recalls have been addressed before purchasing a used 2011 Corolla.

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-13
  • VIN: 2T1BU4EE0BC
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I was notified of the air bag recall a year ago but the car dealerships in my area does not have the parts and I need to use my vehicle daily. So I am not sure what to do from here for that but I believe that the appropriate time to remedy this recall has past already and the fact that we have our children riding with us and we are unaware that their life is in danger or because we can not get it fixed is not acceptable. Then on top of that I am having issues like when my 2011 Corolla is sitting idle it will rev up the engine without touching the gas pedal and does this randomly and without warning and also while I am driving around 55 MPH on the interstate or highway sometimes it will dramatically drop and lose about 10- 15 MPH speed for no reason and this happens randomly as well. And this fluctuation happens during cruise control the most so I no longer even use that function. Also both headlights have moisture in them and are so fogged up now that visibility is almost impossible at night now. Also the weather striping around all my windows have dry rotted and broke off and there is practically nothing left of stripping anymore. Then the center dash above the radio just broke and gave out under my phone holder while driving, it broke into about 15 different pieces. I know that my phone or the holder is even close to heavy enough to cause the dash panel to cave in like that. I called to get a price on the dash and it was like $250+ and who can afford that for a piece of plastic. Lastly my driver and passenger seat will get stuck if you try adjusting them and sometimes it will let you move the seat but to do so you have to hop up and down for several minutes and throughout the adjustment to get the seat to move in any direction.

Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 Scion xB and Lexus IS F, 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris, 2006-2008 Lexus IS250 and Lexus IS350 and 2007-2008 Lexus ES350 vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Vehicles of these model years and models that were not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the model, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator or the air bag assembly, free of charge. The recall began on December 6, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for interim notification for this campaign are G1P (Toyota Zone A), G1R (Toyota Zone B), G2G (Lexus Zone A), and G2H (Lexus Zone B). Negative 2011 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Grant Lockman 2024-11-10

I've had this car for 6 months now and I've noticed that the mpg/epa fuel economy stated on the original sticker is much higher than what I'm actually getting. I'm only getting around 17 mpg when driving in the city, and not much better on the highways. Interestingly, two local dealer service reps have told me that they've heard similar complaints from other customers, so it seems to be a national issue. I contacted the national call center and they're currently looking into it, but they did mention that not all cars will achieve even the minimum 21 mpg. One of the dealers tried resetting the computer and tire pressure, but unfortunately, it didn't make any difference. Both dealers suggested that I drive the car for 5,000 miles to see any improvement, but that wasn't mentioned in the contract and I won't be driving that much in the next 6 months. Additionally, the tank only holds a maximum of 12 gallons.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2011 Corolla S. After driving a 2000 Solara for 11 years, I decided to go for something new and affordable. While the S model is definitely the best looking Corolla for '11, I have to admit that it hasn't quite lived up to my expectations. It's a reliable car, but I find myself feeling a bit underwhelmed by its performance. The reviews were right - it's not the most powerful or exciting car to drive. However, it gets me where I need to go and I'm grateful for that. How about you? Do you have any experiences with the Corolla S?

  3. Jaylen Mann 2024-10-10

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2011 Corolla. I've driven it for 18k/mi and while I initially prioritized MPG over comfort, I now wish I had focused more on the latter. The car feels a bit underpowered and I had to replace a defective front tire (which took two dealer visits). While the MPG is good, I'm not sure the gas savings are worth the back pain. I'm grateful that I still have my 2004 Sienna because I find it difficult to drive the Corolla all the time. In hindsight, I think a Camry would have been a better fit for me as it has more comfortable seats and accommodates taller individuals better (I'm over 6').

  4. Alberto Heidenreich 2024-08-23

This vehicle is a no-frills option that provides basic, reliable transportation. It's a great choice for those who need a reliable vehicle to get around town and to work. Although it may not be the best option for long distance travel due to cabin noise, instrument quality, front seat comfort on long trips, and mediocre-at-best fuel mileage in the city, it has never failed to start. While there are comparable vehicles with more power and options, I personally prefer this car over most others for its reliability factor.

  5. Lambert Ebert 2024-08-09

We purchased a brand new 2011 Corolla LE as we were in need of an affordable and reliable vehicle. While this car is definitely a no-frills economy car, I do have some concerns. Firstly, the interior feels quite cheap and drab, which is unusual for a Toyota. Additionally, the radio stopped working after about 5 years and I’ve noticed some wear and tear on the side arm rests. The entire car interior is made of hard plastic and thin gray cloth, which is so thin that I wore a hole completely through the carpet underneath the gas pedal. Secondly, the front seat comfort is not great - I once went on a 500 mile trip and during the final 2 hour stretch, I was in serious pain. The seat offers very little cushioning and it felt like I was riding on a park bench the entire time. Finally, gas mileage is not exceptional - I do a lot of city driving and only average around 20-21 mpg. When I do a mix of highway and city driving, I can usually average around 25 mpg. In the end, this is an affordable car that will serve you well for 5-10 years, but you may eventually want to upgrade to something more comfortable and efficient.

Positive 2011 Toyota Corolla car reviews

  1. Antonio Douglas 2024-11-22

It's great to hear that you already have a 2006 Corolla automatic that you and your wife love! I understand that you prefer driving manual and had the opportunity to shop for a manual transmission car this time around. After test driving several cars in this segment, you narrowed it down to the Civic LX, Mazda 3 I Touring, and Corolla S. While the Corolla S may have less power compared to the other two, it excels in many other categories.

  2. Philip Emard 2024-11-16

I understand that some people may have been disappointed with the Corolla, but in my opinion, it may be worth considering spending an additional $20k to get a Lexus. It's important to keep in mind that a $40k Lexus with all the bells and whistles and performance cannot be expected for under $20k. When I was shopping for a new car, I looked at all cars under $25k, including American, Korean, and Japanese models, and Toyota still beat them all by a mile in terms of quality. While Toyota did have some recalls, I believe they were fabricated and my 2007 Camry was under-recall and never had any issues. The Corolla offers a comfortable ride, awesome fuel efficiency, perfect safety, and is very roomy (similar to the Camry).

  3. Bennett Ondricka 2024-09-15

I bought my 2011 Corolla in 2014 with 32800 miles on it for $15000. It has been a reliable car for many years, taking me to work and back, which is about 50 miles each way. Although I am now retired and don't drive as much, it still runs great with 160000 miles on it. I have kept up with standard maintenance such as oil changes, brake replacements, tire rotations, and alignments, and so far, I haven't had any major issues. I recently gave it to my son, and now I am in the market for another 2011 Corolla, which will probably cost me around $8000 and have about 150000 miles on it. It's frustrating, but I know it will be worth it in the end.

  4. Kay Feeney 2024-09-07

I've owned this car for three years and it has been one of the best cars I've ever had. Right off the bat, I noticed that it is a very fast car that pulls when you touch the accelerator. The suspension still feels awesome even with 110,000 miles on the original fabric suspension. The fuel economy on this car is very good, I can go a week without filling up the tank and get about 24 mpg in the city. This car handles very well in rain or snow, it's actually very good in snow, and even better with snow tires. I highly recommend this car as it is very safe and reliable. I have only had to change the brakes and oil in three years.

  5. Dennis Bartell 2024-07-29

We have a 2010 Corolla LE and we are absolutely thrilled with it. We traded in a 2008 Camry SE and have found that the Corolla more than meets our needs in terms of comfort, gas mileage, and overall performance. While it may not be a luxury car and could be considered a little dated, we find it fun to drive and with two years of FREE maintenance, it's a bargain to own!
