2014 Toyota Avalon hybrid problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-27
- VIN: 4T1BD1EB5EU
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The rear window retractable sun visor motor/gears have failed. When this happens, it leaves the sun visor in the up position in the rear window at all times. This makes it very, very, hard to see anything out the rear window at night, also pretty hard when it's raining or cloudy out. I understand this has happened to quite a lot of these cars and is a VERY expensive repair cost. I feel this is hazard that Toyota should bear the cost of fixing, because of the sheer amount of vehicles this has happened. Thank you for keeping us all informed and safe from these types of things!

No rock found impacting mirror, no bird found at impact point, no dead animal found at impact point. If passenger window had not been up then mirror remains would have entered the car cabin. The mirror has been replaced and is not available for inspection. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center to my knowledge. The component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of a problem prior to the failure. The problem occurred on March 22nd, 2022 at 10:30 AM eastern time zone approximately.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-02
- VIN: 4T1BD1EB0EU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Multiple warning lights suddenly appeared on the dash while stopped at a traffic signal. (Photo attached) Note: the photo does not show the red "PCS" light which was flashing. I was able to get off the road safely although the brakes did not feel normal. Had the car towed to Capitol Toyota in San Jose the following morning for repair. They diagnosed the problem as a failure in the Master Cylinder Booster Unit and replaced it. Note: the attached invoice misstates the issue as "check engine light" which is incorrect.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-25
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB0EU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My Avalon is trying to kill me. I promise I have done nothing wrong! When going down the highway at 85mph I have had people cut in front of me. When pushing on the brakes to avoid collision, the brakes lock up and do not release for about 5 seconds. Naturally, this is quite unnerving for myself, passengers as cars that scatter around me when the Avalon takes control --- slamming on the brakes --- and wont hand control back until it has caused quite a mess. This has happened three times now and no one can tell me what is wrong. I am told to get a brake job at the Toyota dealership even though the pads still have plenty of life.

- VIN: 4T1BD1EB3EU
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: FROM THE TIME FRAME OF 2017 TIL THE PRESENT, THE HEADLAMPS ON THE VEHICLE WOULD BURN OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON. EACH TIME I REPLACE THEM, THEY WOULD LAST FOR ABOUT 4 TO 6 MONTHS AND THEN THEY WOULD BURN OUT AGAIN. SOMETIMES EITHER ONE WOULD BURN, LEFT OR RIGHT, AND TWICE I'VE HAD BOTH GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS CAUSING THE HEAD LAMPS TO BURN OUT. I'VE REPLACED THEM EACH TIME, AND IN COUNTING I HAVE REPLACED THEM AT LEAST 10 TIMES SINCE 2017. THIS IS TOTALLY UNUSUAL COMPARED TO MY OTHER TWO CARS WHERE I'VE NEVER ONCE HAD TO REPLACE THE HEADLAMPS ON THESE. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN AND OTHER TIMES WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON BEFORE DRIVING. TODAY (MARCH 1, 2021) IS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN, AND THIS TIME THE DRIVER SIDE LAMP WENT OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE 95000 MILES ON MY TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IT JUST QUIT - DEAD STOP (VERY DANGEROUS) AND, HAD IT NOT BEEN A HYBRID, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET IT OFF OF THE INTERSTATE. TURNS OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP STOPPED WORKING WITH NO WARNING. MY LAST AVALON WENT ALMOST 300,000 MILES ON THE SAME FUEL PUMP. THE PUMP, IN MY OPINION, IS FAULTY BUT OUT OF WARRANTY. TOYOTA IS CHARGING OVER $1,000 TO FIX IT. I TRIED TO GET TOYOTA MANAGEMENT CONTACT INFORMATION (DISTRICT MGR.) FROM THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY WOULD NOT SUPPLY IT IN ORDER FOR ME TO DRAW ATTENTION TO TOYOTA OF THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF A KEY COMPONENT OF THE CAR. I CALLED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS, GOT THE SAME RESPONSE AND FELT LIKE THEY COULD CARE LESS THAT THERE MAY BE A DEFICIENCY IN THEIR COMPONENTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE SEEN ONLINE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS EARLY FAILURE OF THE FUEL PUMP. TOYOTA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM AND THEY NEED TO ISSUE A TSB ON IT AND PERFORM THE WORK AT COST VS MAKING MONEY ON SOMETHING THAT COULD KILL ME AND MY FAMILY MEMBERS. I STILL CAN GET OVER THEIR LACK OF CONCERN.

As a long-time Toyota owner, I have unfortunately noticed a decline in my experience with Toyota and my Avalon. I have encountered more issues with this car than with all my other Toyotas combined. Let me start with the issues. Firstly, the Bridgestone Turanza tires were the worst tires I have ever had. They were noisy, had poor traction, and provided a very harsh ride. I was not aware of these poor quality tires until I drove this car for a few weeks. I replaced them with Pirelli P7s, which are much better tires for this car. Secondly, the headliner started falling down around the rear of the sunroof. The dealer attempted the first fix from Toyota, but unfortunately, they left fingerprints all over the headliner. The second time I took it back, Toyota had come up with another fix, which worked. Thirdly, the chrome trim at the bottom of the rear passenger driver's side window started lifting up. The dealer said they would call when they get the replacement, but I haven't heard from them in over a month. Lastly, the vinyl on the armrest is cracking on a corner. Toyota uses vinyl all over on these leather interiors, and the cracking is occurring on a sharp wrap-around surface where you don't even touch it. Others on the TN website are reporting the same issue, but much worse in some cases. Toyota did replace the armrest under warranty. Despite these issues, I still appreciate Toyota and their commitment to customer satisfaction.5) Have you experienced the radio dying in AM or FM mode? Moving from station to station as if in mute but with no sound? If you stop the car and re-start it, it's fine. Unfortunately, the dealer is unable to help since it only happens once in a while. Here's a list of issues at 20,000 miles that you may want to consider before purchasing this car: 1) The ride can be harsh, but better tires can help. Toyota seems to think people want a car that rides harsh and handles so-so instead of a car that rides nice and handles so-so. 2) The seats are pretty firm and as time goes on, you may feel like you are riding on the seat frames. Poor design for comfort. 3) The power lumbar is very poor, the adjustment is very limited and it's hard to find a comfortable position. My 2012 Camry was much better. 4) The NAV unit is absolutely horrible. Unfortunately, Toyota sticks you with this NAV and mediocre stereo. The NAV updates are near $200 and only available once a year. If you ask the dealer, they don't seem to know much about it. I use my iPhone most of the time; it's much more intuitive, roads are updated constantly, and the GUI is much simpler. 5) The Entune firmware is like something from the early 2000s. It's horribly slow, and the Bluetooth setup needs to be re-paired every now and then since it gets messed up. Toyota has really fallen behind with this firmware, the apps are ancient and my iPhone blows it away, yet my iPhone can't interface with the display. There are all these harassing screen warnings that I eventually figured out to disable for the most part, but I now rarely use it since it's so dated compared to phone apps. However, there are some great features that you may like: 1) The MPG is incredible. For a full-size car, it's hard to believe you can get 40-45mpg with a little finessing and attention to MPG increasing techniques. 2) The drivetrain is great. The Toyota Hybrid Drive System is working flawlessly so far, and the transitions between Electric and ICE drive are hard to notice. The ECVT transmission has no shift points, making it smooth as butter. The drive power delivery is quiet and smooth. I particularly like the brakes, which have a balanced amount of effort and stopping power. The steering is precise and well-balanced, with just the right amount of effort and road feel for a car this size. The steering wheel design is also great, making it very comfortable to drive. The exterior and interior are both attractive, in my opinion, with great aesthetic design. Overall, the 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Touring is a very nice looking car inside and out, with an excellent proven Hybrid drive train that delivers excellent MPG for a car this size. Although it falls down in some areas such as the harsh ride, firm seat bottoms, and poor interior quality material (vinyl), it still remains a pretty good car that could have been great if the design issues above were not present. The Entune system is poorly supported and worthless, but the car is very reliable and has great gas mileage. I got rid of the terrible OEM Bridgestone tires and put Goodyear assurance comfortreads on about 28k miles ago, which has resulted in much better wear and comfort. At 38k, there were no additional problems, and at 50k, there were still no additional problems. Since new Fuelly, it has been trouble-free and has achieved 44.9mpg.

We absolutely love this car! It's a roomy sedan with luxurious finishes both in the front and back. The actual mileage per gallon is impressive and we've been very pleased with it on long distance trips. The only downside is that the trunk is a bit smaller than non-hybrid big sedans, but that's a minor issue. The chrome bezel on the dash can be a bit distracting when the sunlight hits it just right, but that's a small complaint. The ride can be a bit rough on bad roads, but as city drivers with frequent extended long distance freeway trips, we've found it to be perfectly comfortable. Although, we do wish it was a bit softer like our old Avalon. The GPS system could be more intuitive, but we absolutely love the backup camera!

I'm a big fan of buying used cars that are still in great condition. There are so many out there that have been traded in by people who just had to have the latest and greatest. Recently, I test drove a 2014 Lexus ES 300h and a 2014 Toyota Avalon Limited Hybrid. Both were almost new and loaded with features, but in the end, I chose the Avalon. Why? Well, for starters, the cars were virtually identical, but the Lexus was $5,000 more expensive than the Toyota. I just couldn't justify spending that much more for the same basic engineering. Plus, I found the Avalon's touchscreen interface much easier to use than the Lexus's point and click operation. I was worried that my passengers might have trouble with the joystick in the Lexus. The only downside to the Avalon is the stock tires (Bridgestone Turanza) which are a bit noisy, but that's an easy fix with a new set of tires. After driving the car for 2,000 miles, including an 800 mile road trip, I'm completely in love with it. The ride is quiet, comfortable, and composed, with minimal sound intrusion into the cabin. And I'm getting an amazing 41.4 mpg according to the car's computer (even though I know Toyota tunes them about 2 mpg high). The Toyota Entune system is also easy to use and works well with my iPhone and apps like Pandora. I'm in my fifties, not my twenties, and I find the capacitive controls for the climate and other systems easy to use. The only issue I've had is a few small but deep road wounds down to the bare metal on the paint, despite having paint protection film. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase.2) You can't input a new address to the nav system while the car is in gear. Maybe with voice command, I could do so? And 3) Road noise is minimal, but not coffin-quiet. But hey, come on... I didn't pay 60 grand for an LS 460, I bought a used Toyota. For my money, I think I got one hell of a value. Very satisfied customer here.

I've been driving the 2014 Avalon XLE Touring Hybrid for about three weeks now and I must say, I'm really enjoying it so far. The fuel efficiency has been as advertised for the first 1000 miles, averaging just below 39 mpg according to the infotainment system. This vehicle is a perfect fit for my needs as a daily driver that is fuel efficient yet spacious enough to haul kids and sports equipment on the weekends. The Avalon ticks all the boxes for me with its impressive fuel efficiency, large trunk, and rear passenger space. Choosing the hybrid option was a no-brainer for me.

This model year only suffers from one drawback - the suspension. While Avalons are known for soft and comfortable rides, this model year suffers from the inability to weather potholes and uneven surfaces. However, it's worth noting that subsequent year models have corrected this problem. If you're considering a 2014 model, it's best to be cautious when driving on off-track roads.

Since 1969, I have only purchased new vehicles, but unfortunately, this Toyota has been the worst experience. The Service Department even admitted that Toyota knew about a manufacturer's defect in the Headliner but failed to disclose it. Only four months after purchasing it, the headliner around the sunroof came loose. Toyota initially suggested tearing apart the car, keeping it for a week, and installing a new one. Then, they came up with a 'fix' using a magnet that only lasted four more months. After waiting 12 days for the parts to arrive from 3M, Toyota decided not to honor it and insisted on taking out the seats, disconnecting all the electrical, and installing a new headliner. What's next? I will never buy a Toyota again. They need to buy the car back. In 2017, I found out that the hands-free charger for my cell phone, which was supposed to be a 'feature,' never worked. They said it needed a special adapter, which they do not sell. Then, when I inquired about why the e-mail function stopped working, they blamed it on Apple since I have an iPhone. They told me it won't work, and I have to buy a phone to fit the car or vice versa. The dialing function has also become very cumbersome. I am counting the days until I trade this vehicle and get something else. On a positive note, the fuel efficiency is great, and the car is comfortable, but it is not what it was cracked up to be. In 2020, other than the initial woes leaving a bad taste, I must say the car has served me well, and the service department is good. However, I just would not trust the dealer again to buy a new vehicle. In 2021, I am getting ready to trade. It's great to hear that your vehicle has been reliable for you! However, I understand that you may have some negative feelings towards Toyota as a company. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

With 74,000 miles and 4 years, 8 months of ownership, I can confidently say that my 2014 Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring is a reliable car. Although the driver's seat was initially too firm for my liking, I took the initiative to have additional foam padding added to it at a reputable upholstery shop. Now, it is incredibly comfortable. The ride is smooth and quiet on the highway, but can be a bit harsh on rough paved streets in the city. Recently, I experienced a loud interior rattle which turned out to be a defective moonroof. However, I was able to have it repaired for $1859.00. Overall, I am confident in the quality and reliability of my car.

There's a lot to like about this car, but unfortunately, I cannot recommend it. During my test drive, I found the ride to be a little stiff but acceptable. However, after driving it for a month, I have noticed that the harshness of the ride has become increasingly annoying. Every rut, crack, and bump on the road is telegraphed through the chassis, making it difficult to enjoy the ride. On rough roads, the ride can be quite jarring. It is my hope that Toyota will address this issue and make improvements to the suspension. Thank you for considering my experience with this car.

Overall, the car is okay, but it can be quite noisy and the Nav/Radio function is unresponsive at times. It also takes a while to turn on. While the mileage is good, it's not quite up to the advertised standards. Additionally, the side visibility is poor and the Nav location is not ideal. However, we appreciate the effort put into this car and hope that these issues can be addressed in future models.
