2012 Chevrolet Sonic problems
The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.
The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-30
- VIN: 1G1JC5SHXC4
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving on the highway late at night, at approximately 60 mph my 2012 Sonic began to lose power and slowed to a dangerously low speed when there was nowhere for me to pull over! I literally had to coast to a spot that I could barely squeeze off the road! Then would not shift into any workable gear but 1st and after that just revved up loudly. Long story short…had to be towed 35 miles home. Then towed to a reputable garage where they concluded the transmission was shot at about 90,000 miles. Would be around $3800. to rebuild. Come to find out these cars are known for this problem! And yet somehow I’m being told by GM that it’s not included in the Turbine Shaft Fracture Recall for that car’s year/make/model!! WHY?! Needless to say….the car will be junked!

All of this has been done over the course of 18months. This has easily been the most expensive car we have ever owned due to the constant repairs, all of which has been because of Failing Parts and overheating.

- Summary: On 4/1/2023 my engine light went on. I had my nephews look at it. see pictures below for engine read and how oil mixed with antifreeze. Also note service paperwork. Gaskets were not up to quality to keep the oil sealed in its compartment. Manager called and tried to take care of issue because he only uses genuine parts but was told there was an issue with this part and until there were more fatalities or more people complained noting could be done. He was NOT happy. They did the best they could resorting to youtube videos and imagination. When I got it back, it was like brand new. Two days later, my engine light came on again. You will find the new engine reading which again had the oil mix with the antifreeze and no oil left. The engine would blow/seize or worse if I kept driving it. I am on disability and live alone. I cannot afford the unpredictability of having something happen to me on the road or where I am suppose to the money. I complained before to a manager at a dealership when I had a problem with my motor when my car was still new. He told me it was supposed to be like that. I keep revving in the middle of traffic lights and people were on my backend when I would get out of work at 3:00 am. The car was recalled two months later to replace many individual motor parts. I am too old and anxious to play these games. Please seriously have look into this please. Thank you for your time.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-24
- VIN: 1G1JC5SH3C4
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 01.24.2023 Purchased Chevy Sonic 2012 three weeks ago (12.27.22) w odometer at 33,688 and manuf. date of 03/2012. It has multiple recalls, inc transmission, that GM has reported resolved. I have had to schedule a transmission rebuild for $3,200.00 in February. After pressing on gas pedal, the vehicle hesitates as though it is going to stall, then lurches forward. On open road it will buck. When slowing down to stop or make turns, it bucks and lurches. The problems duplicate those stated in almost all of the complaints reported on this site. If GM has reported this vehicle as properly repaired, then I am stuck. Also, the questionable low mileage of a ten year old vehicle and dates of the recalls make me wonder about where and when or if all the recalls were truly resolved. There is one accident reported on this vehicle, Sept. 2022; was the accident caused by the same powertrain related problems?
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

The check engine warning light illuminated with a trouble code regarding the engine. The contact who is a certified mechanic determined that the failure was related to Technical Service Bulletin NHTSA ID: 14V315000 (Power Train). The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer where the vehicle was waiting to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,410.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-17
- VIN: 1G1JD5SB6C4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: A few months after this car was purchased, we received the notice regarding recall 14234 for our 2012 Chevy Sonic. However, when we brought it to the dealership, they stated that our vehicle didn't fall under the recall. I told them we were experiencing shaking while shifting and it seemed like the exact same issue. Now about 1 year later with less than 100,000 miles, the car will not shift properly into 3rd gear. The auto repair shop informed us that we need to get a new transmission among many other related repairs. We seem to have the exact same issue as reported in the recall; however, we continue to be informed that our vehicle does not fall under the umbrella of the recall. After doing a number of searches it seems that this is a common story. All these 2012 Chevy Sonics have the same issue yet do not fall under the recall.

Since this incident I have extreme pain in neck, dizziness, and weakness in both my arms. My vehicle is not listed as part of the recalls and the violent stop of my vehicle upon hitting the object was severe enough to snap both tierod ends yet airbags did not deploy. I have significant injuries as a result and a wrecked car that I feel was hard to control due to the problematic acceleration of transmission
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-05
- VIN: 1G1JC5SH5C4
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The gear shift in the car started sticking about 3 years ago but it would still shift so I wasn't too concerned. Since then it's gotten gradually worse until tonight where it took me 5 minutes to put it into park. I couldn't released the key or get it out of reverse and it was terrifying. Mine and others safety was put at risk because my car not going into park means it can roll anywhere and cause an accident. I haven't taken it to a dealer to get checked and it hasn't been inspected by anyone else. There never have been any warnings from the car that there is an issue.

The vehicle has only had 48,900. They said that there was a flaw possible in the transmission but have been waiting to see if they have a fix for the problem since it was possibly a manufacturing issue since the vehicle was service regularly at the dealership. We were on the highway when this was happening, and the vehicle what to stall out, so we had to come home. On Monday, we had the vehicle towed since it would not reverse out of the driveway.. THE ONLY SOLUTION WE HAVE FOUND TO THIS IS PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, TURNING IT OFF, AND TURNING IT BACK ON AGAIN, BUT THIS IS VERY SCARY IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THIS HAPPENED MOST RECENTLY ON 5/8/21 BUT HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 5 TIMES IN THE PAST 18 MONTHS.

This car is really fun to drive. You'll be happy to know that there were no mechanical issues, except for the sway bar links which were covered under warranty. The sport package with 17

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my first Chevy, the Sonic. After my 2007 Saturn Ion broke down and was too expensive to fix, I did some research and found the Sonic. Surprisingly, it had been on the lot for several months before I stumbled upon it. It's been over a year now and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it. The only minor issues I've noticed are that the AC feels a little weak and the engine noise is more noticeable than on my Saturn. Overall, I'm really satisfied with my Sonic and would definitely consider getting another one in the future if I need a new car. Thanks for listening!

I recently upgraded from a 2007 Civic to the Sonic and managed to snag a great deal on a 2LT model for just $16,500. I've now driven 5,000 miles on the Sonic and I'm really impressed with its handling. However, I did notice that the ride was a bit squishy due to the soft stock tires, so I've ordered some new ones. The gas mileage is comparable to the Civic, at around 30 MPG mixed, but I'm confident that I could get the rated 35 MPG and more if I drove more conservatively on the highway. The feature set of the Sonic is unbeatable in its price category, with only the Kia Rio coming close. What I really appreciate about the Sonic is that it offers much more value for your money than any other competing vehicle. It's a no-brainer!

I came across some negative reviews and felt compelled to share my experience. I own a 2012 LT 1.4 Turbo 6-speed manual and I absolutely love it! It gets an impressive 41.0 average on the highway, has good trunk space, and decent seats. The stereo could be better, but that's just my personal opinion. The only downside I have noticed is the limited visibility to the sides and rear due to the headrests getting in the way. Currently, I have driven 4100 miles and have added fog lights which complement the regular lights really well. The instrument cluster is well-designed with all the necessary information right in front where you need it. The steering wheel controls are also very handy. I would definitely buy this car again, as the Turbo and 6-speed manual are key features that make it stand out.

This car is a great choice for Michigan winters. With 4 snow tires, it still manages to get over 30 mpg. The LT model comes with a good equipment package. On a recent trip to the UP of Michigan, we were able to achieve an impressive 38.5 mpg, even though it's only rated at 35 hwy. Despite minor damage and repairs (caused by others), the car drives very well at highway speeds and comfortably seats four people. It also has a decent amount of cargo space, especially when the rear seats are folded down. So far, there have been no mechanical problems or issues. The only downside is that it can be a bit rough on bumpy roads, which are common in this area.

My husband and I purchased our 2012 Sonic on December 10th after weeks of car shopping. Unfortunately, the car spun a bearing just 15 days later on Christmas Day, rendering it completely undriveable. Despite this setback, our local dealership has been incredibly helpful throughout the entire ordeal. They attempted to get GM to replace the car, but unfortunately, GM refused and instead suggested rebuilding the defective engine. However, the dealership refused this option and instead convinced GM to replace the engine entirely. Although the dealership installed the new engine, they discovered during a test drive that the cam shaft sensor was faulty in the new engine. It has now been over two weeks and there are still some issues with the car. Unfortunately, we have found GM customer service to be unhelpful and dishonest.

Chevy should improve the quality of their vehicles. In just 4.5 years, I have had to replace the battery twice, alternator, A/C compressor, radiator, thermostat, fan switch, cooling fan, coil pack, and plugs. This level of maintenance is unacceptable for a modern car.

Although I did not choose this car, I received it brand new and I am very grateful for that. However, I want to warn potential buyers about some issues I have experienced. The turbo engine can be dangerous to drive due to terrible lag, and the car may not move when the temperature is high. This seems to be worse at 100 degrees or above, but noticeable by 95. If you live in a desert climate, I would advise against buying a turbo. In addition to the danger, it gets only 16 mpg in the city and less than 30 mpg on the highway when it is hot. Unfortunately, the dealer has refused to address the issue or stand behind the car, even though it has been doing this since new. I believe it is a design flaw. I have also had issues with the water pump and broken AC, and the transmission is now malfunctioning. Despite my meticulous care, the entire car rattles like a 67 Buick. Although the Sonic is safe and comfortable with a spacious and quiet cabin and lots of features, the quality just isn't there. I doubt this vehicle will last to 100k miles, even with most of the miles being on the freeway. In addition, the trade-in value is already low on this premium level car, and a comparable Honda Fit would be worth much more. The bottom line is, if you do buy a Sonic, do not buy the turbo. Although it may be more fun to drive due to torque, it is annoyingly slow off the line and dangerously slow when the engine temperature is affected by summer weather. I would not recommend anyone buy a Sonic. The fact that the dealer says the car is fine despite getting only 16 mpg in town speaks volumes about Chevrolet's product.

I would advise against purchasing this car. Although the exterior and interior design are unique and appealing, the ride quality is poor. The suspension is not up to par and you will feel every bump on the road. Additionally, the heat is not very effective, especially if you live in a colder climate like Canada. While the gas mileage is good for highway driving, the gears shifting are noticeable and acceleration is slow due to the 1.8 L engine. The sound system is also subpar, with many LS and LT models lacking rear speakers. Overall, despite its attractive appearance, this car is not enjoyable to drive and not worth the investment. I would recommend considering other options, such as a Cobalt or similar model.

The gas and brake pedals are quite sensitive, and this car is not very fuel-efficient. I have been putting $10 in every other day while renting it while my car is being fixed. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car.
