2013 Subaru Xv crosstrek problems
The Subaru Crosstrek (Japanese: スバル・クロストレック, Hepburn: Subaru Kurosutorekku) (also known as the Subaru XV globally for the first two generations) is a compact crossover SUV produced by Subaru since 2012. It is a successor to the Outback Sport in the United States and Canada, and the Impreza XV globally. Like the Outback Sport, the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza hatchback with minor differences, though with a more substantial lift than the Outback Sport.
Initially, the vehicle was marketed as the XV globally, and as the XV Crosstrek in the United States and Canada. In 2015, Subaru dropped the XV moniker in the United States and Canada, marketing it simply as the Crosstrek for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, Subaru introduced the third-generation model, using the Crosstrek nameplate globally for the first time.
All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

Common 2013 Subaru Xv crosstrek problems
The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include:
- Ignition Switch and Park Position Lockout: The ignition switch and park position lockout have been reported as common problems in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. This issue can cause the car to stall and make it difficult to turn off the engine. It is believed to be caused by a faulty ignition switch or a problem with the park position lockout mechanism .
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Some owners of the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek have reported excessive oil consumption. This issue is believed to be caused by cold-start fuel wash, which accelerates cylinder-bore wear, and gas seeping past the piston rings, which dilutes engine oil. If the oil level is regularly checked and kept topped off, the engine will continue to function as intended for many years, preventing a catastrophic failure. Additionally, oil consumption can be decreased by running the engine continuously until it reaches operating temperature, and by avoiding high loads until the engine has fully warmed up .
- Unintended Acceleration: Some Subaru models from the time period of the first-generation Crosstrek may be susceptible to sudden unintended acceleration, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in 2020 in the District of New Jersey. However, there isn't enough information about this case to make a final determination. It would be prudent to make sure that a Crosstrek reacts to pedal inputs as it should .
- Batteries Draining: Premature battery failure is still a problem for Subaru, with all Crosstrek battery issues from 2013 to 2017 as well as issues with Foresters and Outbacks. However, the fact that the Crosstrek is not included in the ongoing class action lawsuit involving its larger siblings suggests that the problem is much less serious in the small SUV .
- CVT Problems: Over the years, the Subaru Lineartronic CVT has undergone numerous revisions and has been largely issue-free since around 2015. This implies that Crosstrek CVT issues for the model years 2015, 2016, and 2017 should be relatively infrequent. However, earlier 2013 to 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek CVT issues are much more prevalent. Severe hesitation on pull-away, trembling ratio changes, grinding and/or knocking noises while operating, and stalling when coming to a stop are all signs of CVT malfunction .
- Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are a common problem in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. These leaks are typically caused by worn or damaged seals and gaskets. While not a major safety concern, oil leaks can be messy and can lead to reduced engine performance if not addressed promptly .
- Wheel Bearing Failure: Wheel bearing failure is a common problem in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. This issue can cause noise and vibration while driving and can lead to more serious problems if not addressed promptly. It is believed to be caused by wear and tear on the wheel bearings, which can be exacerbated by off-road use or aggressive driving .
- Weak Windscreens and Sunroofs: Some owners of the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek have reported weak windscreens and sunroofs. This issue can cause the windscreen or sunroof to crack or shatter unexpectedly. It is believed to be caused by a design flaw or a manufacturing defect .
In summary, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include ignition switch and park position lockout, excessive oil consumption, unintended acceleration, batteries draining, CVT problems, oil leaks, wheel bearing failure, and weak windscreens and sunroofs. While some of these issues are more serious than others, all should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

- VIN: JF2GPAVC7D2
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: For the record I'm going to list the items here I'd rather them go down in writing then for my words to not have a witness. 1- safety : the Bluetooth connection is busted and crackling for both me and the caller 2- Automation: nothing happens automatic in this car the locks do not go down when I get in motion . the sunroof and the windows do not roll up in auxiliary power after the key is off. 3- Oil: every thousand Miles the oil light to show up I cannot live like that carrying oil in my car when I run a thousand miles every 3 weeks. 4- DENT REPAIR : have asked you to schedule the date guy to pull this dent out of the front driver wheel well and that hasn't happened yet 5- locking mechanism: the trunk has to be slammed closed every time. The passenger side seat belt noise comes on even if I put a bag of to go food in the seat. 6- sanitation: these seats are infected with something I have cleaned them multiple times and my passengers are complaining of itching and feeling a bite when they ride. 7- the front passenger seat has obviously some strong stain that resembles body fluid because it will not come up even when i clean up in the seat of the cushion it keeps reappearing to the surface. 8- overhead: when it rains above my head you can hear sounds of rain as though it's literally trickling in at the driver door. More than I have noticed that sound I'm not sure what's going on in the overhead but it shouldn't sound like that. PLEASE AND THANKS
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JF2GPAWC7D2
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: While slowing to turn into a turn lane, my care unexpectedly accelerated to a very high speed, causing me to crash straight into a signal light post. The light post was knocked over by the force of impact. The car ended up around the corner, facing the opposite direction and having hit another car. Police responded to the scene and inspected the vehicle, which was towed away. An insurance claim has been filed, though I am unaware if they have inspected the vehicle yet. The passenger airbag deployed but driver airbag did not. I had no warning before the sudden acceleration and this is the only time something like this happened.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-29
- VIN: JF2GPACC2D2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2013 SUBARU CROSSTREK stalled on the highway in March 2023 while I was driving home from work. I brought it to Hassett Subaru in Wantagh because a friend told me that there was a recall on the spring valve (from 5 years ago, which I was never notified of). Vlad Oriol wanted to charge me a few thousand dollars to breakdown the engine, even though that was a requirement of the recall. I checked the VIN and found out my car was covered by the spring valve recall. Since the car was unsafe to drive, I then called Subaru headquarters who sent a tech supervisor to investigate the situation. The tech supervisor said the problem was due to the recall so the engine breakdown was covered. The tech supervisor said the "rocker arm had come loose from excessive lash, but was tied to the recall issue," and also added that there was no other damage. Hassett Subaru was forced by Subaru headquarters to preform the recall fix. I picked up my car (we live 2 miles from Hassett) and the very next day the car wouldn't accelerate and was constantly misfiring. I brought the car back to Hassett. The tech supervisor came out again to investigate, this time there was additional damage to the cam shaft (which was not there before Hassett worked on the car). Hassett told Subaru headquarters that there was a preexisting issue with the car (which was totally false). As a result Subaru headquarters would not cover the cost to fix the problem that Hassett caused by attempting to fix the recall issue. Thanks to Hassett's misrepresentations to Subaru headquarters we have a car that doesn't run and can't afford a new one.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-30
- VIN: JF2GPAGC1D2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Driving on the freeway my car lost power i pulled off to the side and tried to restart it. As I have the ignition turned over for 30 to 40 seconds the starter sounded erratic and the oil temperature light was flashing. I sat there for about ten minutes and tried again and it did the same thing but it started. This power loss has happened twice. The erratic noise coming from the ignition, and the hesitation of starting is a regular ongoing issue along with the oil temperature light. Since the first stall at about 117000 miles on the odometer the car has been burning oil at a rate of a full quart about every 3000 miles. #2 Around 120000 miles my key wouldn't come out of the ignition. This happened first on a late night in a high crime area. I actually had to leave my keys in my ignition while going into a gas station to pay for fuel. Since then this happens every time I turn off my vehicle and put it into the park position. Usually I have to wait around ten minutes to be able to remove the keys. Both of these issues cause a great deal of anxiety on the freeway or having to leave the key in the ignition.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-10
- VIN: JF2GPAKC0D2
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: Whilst driving down Highway 101 near Sequim WA, I was on cruise control doing 55 MPH going up a steep hill which I have done numerous times before without issue. When all of a sudden the car suddenly slowed down, for me to hear honking from a Semi behind me who had to suddenly swerve to go around us to stop him from rear ending me (luckily that part of the road on the hill had a second lane for the truck to use, if not then me and my son would probably be seriously injured or dead.) I looked at the dashboard to find the engine warning light on, and the cruise control flashing, but the car was still running and drove fine with the accelerator pressed. Later on I found out this error code was P0024. When that issue happened, not only had the engine warning light illuminated, it caused not only the cruise control to disengage (without my input) but also for the vehicle stability control to stop working. Once again though the engine was still running file and in my opinion it disabling the cruise and stability control gravely endangered the occupants when it had no reason to disable them. Since then I have had other similar error codes such as P000D which have cause the same thing, but they happened on level ground so the car did not slow down so suddenly. I believe the issue is low or used engine oil, as when I got an oil change (within service life) the issues seems to have gone away; this has happened many times before. These PZEV vehicles not only in my opinion break EPA laws on emissions as they make the car burn through many quarts of oil in the service life, so how Subaru can claim PZEV when exchanging high RPS and a boat load of oil for some if any PZEV's I do not know. My car has two recalls, I have been urgently trying to get these fixed, but my two local dealerships (both 50 miles away) refuse to do the recalls as I filed a lemon complaint, and BBB complaint as one refused to honor a price match for thousands to me. I am a disabled Veteran and need car.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-15
- VIN: JF2GPACC7DH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Transmission failure while driving on highway caused it to suddenly stalled. On restarting engine, car kept jerking and stopping, became undrivable. Only 46,700 miles on the clock. No warning lights, no warning of any kind. Subaru issued 10 year extended warranty covering transmission on this car but should have recalled and replaced since failure is catastrophic and dangerous. I took my car to Subaru dealer and they found low transmission fluid. Instead of inspecting the seals, they blamed the problem on oil change by an independent garage, accusing them of erroneously drained out transmission fluid before the car broke down.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-28
- VIN: JF2GPACC7D2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I CAN"T REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION WHEN THE CAR IS PUT IN PARK. THIS ISSUE WARRANTS A RECALL. THIS IS CAUSED BY PROBLEMS WITH THE PARK-RANGE SWITCH ACROSS SEVERAL SUBARU MODELS FROM 2012-2018. SUBARU ISSUED SERVICE BULLETIN 16-112-18R REGARDING THIS ON 3/15/18. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE BY OWNERS, DEALERSHIPS AND SUBARU OF AMERICA (SOA). NUMEROUS CAR FORUMS AND BLOGS ADDRESS OWNERS' STEPS TO GET THIS REPAIRED. THE SOLUTIONS OFFERED BY THE DEALERS RANGE FROM ' YOUR CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND IT WILL RUN HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX' TO ' YES THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE BRING IT IN AND WE WILL REPLACE IT NO CHARGE'. SOA'S RESPONSE TO OWNERS VARIED FROM 'WE WILL TAKE CARE IT TO WE'LL HAVE TO SEE IF WE CAN HELP YOU OUT'. MY DEALER'S RESPONSE WAS '$700 TO REPAIR ' YOU MIGHT CALL SOA TO SEE IF THEY CAN HELP OUT.' I DID CALL SOA AND THEY TOLD ME TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER AND LET THEM KNOW WHEN IT WAS ' BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY HELP ON THE COST AT THAT POINT. IT DOES APPEAR THAT SOA WILL COVER THE COST BUT YOU MAY NOT BE TOLD THAT INITIALLY. FORTUNATELY/UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS A QUICK FIX EASILY FOUND ONLINE THAT YOU CAN DO IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES BY DISCONNECTING THE SWITCH TO THE IGNITION. THIS SOLVES THE PROBLEM OF THE STUCK KEY BUT ALSO DISABLES THE CHIME IF YOU LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION AND ALSO ALLOWS YOU TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IF THE CAR IS NOT IN PARK. SO NOW, IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL, YOU CAN LOCK YOUR KEYS IN THE CAR AND IF THE CAR IS NOT IN PARK OR THE HAND BREAK IS NOT ENGAGED YOUR CAR WILL ROLL AWAY. I HAVE DONE THE QUICK FIX ' BUT EVEN WITH ALL SORTS OF WAYS TO HELP ME REMEMBER I AM NOT COMFORTABLE.. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE. WHEN I MENTIONED THE FIX TO SOA AS CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE THEY SAID THAT WAS MY PROBLEM NOT THEIRS. REALLY? MY CAR IS S 2013 AND I WILL NOT COMMIT TO $700 AT THE DEALER WITHOUT KNOWING IF SOA WILL PAY.

I recently traded my 2012 Impreza for a Crosstrek. The Impreza was too low for the backroads in the mountains where I live. However, the Crosstrek has a nice ground clearance and much better suspension for nasty forest dirt roads. I even drove it on forest roads that I would never have taken the Impreza on, and it did great! The Crosstrek can tow up to 1500lbs, which is perfect for me as I can now tow a motorcycle over rocks with this thing. The heated seats are height adjustable, which allows me to sit lower and not have the Impreza's mirror block vision on right curves (which was dangerous on the Impreza). Additionally, the auto transmission doesn't have near the

this is my third Subaru, I have been driving mostly German cars over the years but my last 3 cars which I usually keep no more than 18 months haveall been subies. love the german cars but quality over the years has gone down hill. not sure what it is but I love the control of the All wheel Drive it just sucks the road. I drove a 2011 outback for a little while with the cvt and was under powered. I choose the 5 speed crosstrekbecause of the lack of power on the cvt . I think if you stick with the 5 speed it really brings out the true car. it would be even better is there was a turbo version. the build quality is better than the outback probably because its made in japan.

Mostly "5 Star" satisfaction as far as owner of this vehicle. Only complaints have to do with interior comfort, road noise & ride. If you can set these aside everything else is a joy. I have 57,000 thousand miles so far and the car still looks great like the day I bought it. The road noise was somewhat corrected when I put new passenger tires on and got rid of those awful all terrain tires. Ride improved somewhat too. On average I get 26-28 mpg city and 32-34 hwy. Have gotten up to 41 mpg at steady 55 pace!😀 Great car!Unfortunitily sold car 7 months ago for a Lexus RX350 Loved the Car though! Needed more room
-
There are a lot of things to like about this car, but the most impressive is the way it drives. I have always heard about how fun they are to drive but never given it much thought. This car handles great, and its off-road capabilities are on par with the 4-wheel drive Toyotas I own or better. It's a tight, well-built car with quality throughout. So far, I've gotten 27.8 combined mpg with 564 miles on the car. I love the versatility and quirky nature of this car. I do a lot of soft sand and beach driving here in Florida, and it hasn't let me down. If you're looking for a car that's out of the mainstream with a lot of features that make it a fun go-anywhere car, I think you would like it.
-
I never really understood the Subaru 'love' that people talked about until I got my Crosstrek! I purchased this vehicle in late October of 2012 and have been happy ever since. I always receive comments about my wheels. The MPG runs from 28 (city) to 33 (hwy). The heated seats are excellent, the A/C is powerful enough to freeze me out, and the speakers are upgraded and perfect. If I had to make a complaint, it would be that the car is a little sluggish when the A/C is on and I need to get moving quickly. When backing up, it's important to keep your foot on the brake until you feel the car engage into drive, or it will drift a little backwards. Other than that, it's a wonderful vehicle and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

2013 XV Crosstrek - 109k miles. The axle shafts on both the right and left have been replaced multiple times. The passenger airbag light is on and the dealership is requesting $900 to replace the passenger side seat bottom. It would be beneficial for the company to consider a recall for this issue. I have had a negative experience with this car and will not be purchasing another Subaru in the future.

I loved my purchase at first! It was great in all weather conditions and I took it on all kinds of adventures with my dog and husband. The seats fold down flat so you can fit a surprising amount in it with some Tetris skills. However, I did experience some issues with buzzing and screeching sounds while driving. I took it in for repairs and had some parts replaced, but unfortunately the issue persisted. Despite this, I still enjoyed driving my Subaru until I was informed that I needed a new transmission. While it was disappointing that the warranty didn't cover the repair, I understand that there are limitations to what can be done. Overall, I had a positive experience with my Subaru and would recommend it to others, but it's important to keep in mind that there may be some issues that need to be addressed.

I owned a 2013 Crosstrek with 35,000 miles that I purchased in 2012. Despite the manual stating that it is normal for a boxer engine to consume a quart of oil approximately every 12-1500 miles, I found this to be an issue with my vehicle. Additionally, the right rear tire wore out faster than the others, which was an expensive problem since AWD tires must be purchased in sets of four. Although I appreciated the car's appearance, I found it lacking in power compared to my old VW Bug, which had a manual transmission like the Crosstrek. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in and opted for a Toyota. As a repeat customer who has experienced issues with two new Subaru purchases, I have decided not to purchase from them again.

I really like most things about the car, but I am getting terrible (15-19) mpg after 3,000 miles and I don't understand why. I purchased the car expecting it to get pretty good MPG around the city, yet still be a fun weekend car for mountain adventures. Although the car has a solid interior, good handling, relatively high clearance and a rugged look, the mpg is totally lacking. I am a mellow driver and I do a mix of city/hwy, so I can't figure out any obvious explanation for the bad mileage.

Our 2013 Crosstrek has been driven for 40,000 miles and recently developed a noise in the front end. Upon taking it to the dealership, they diagnosed a broken front strut and recommended a $700 repair. While it is uncommon for a car to experience a broken strut at this mileage, we are confident in our decision to purchase this vehicle despite its limitations. We remain committed to resolving this issue and continuing to enjoy our Crosstrek.
